I went here with my wife on a Friday and didnt want to wait 40 minutes to be seated. We came back the next night just before the rush and she ordered an appetizer, briscutte with potato bombs and greens beans. I got the pulled pork with potato salad and fries. After a short wait they brought out our dinner plates. I reminded him that we ordered an appetizer which we didnt receive. He apologized and said he would go get it. In the mean time we ate what we had in front of us. The food didnt seem very fresh. Must have been mass cooked and kept warmish until ordered. My potato salad was inedible. The potatoes were very dry and had brown rotten spots just under the skin. I didnt bother complaining since I was filled with everything else I ate. He came back 15 minutes later without the appetizer, to fill my drink. I mentioned it and told him we didn't want the appetizer anymore. The portions we received were huge. A lady came out and gave us a card for a free appetizer the next time we came in. That made everything better there. So we did come back in during lunch time the next week. We wanted to give it another chance. And what other options did we have in town?? The place was half full and some party was going on. We were taken to the back little room. There we waited for 10-15 minutes before we had anyone check in on us. I had to ask the man who sat us(our server from our previous visit) if we could order. He ended up taking our order. We ordered that appetizer wings and rings. It was good. I'd say we waited an average amount of time to get our food. The waitress that was in our little room helping everyone else completely ignored us. I didnt have anywhere to go and I had my food so I didn't mind. It wasn't the best food being it was so greasy I used all of the napkins to clean myself. I felt so lethargic afterwards. Since we were forgotten, I flagged down the nearest employee and said we were ready to go. I have never not given a tip. Since I felt as if we did t have a waitress, I didnt give one. In short- if you don't have the best food you had better have good customer service. I guess I am used to the big city and should forget my high expectations. I won't be going back again. read more

My husband and I were kinda bummed when their menu dropped a lot of our favorite meals, as well as the prices going up, but it's still one of the better places in Rexburg. It can be really crowded so check times before you go on google and expect to spend more money than in other places, but you do get a good amount of food for what you pay. read more

The only thing you can count on here is inconsistency! Been several times over the years and have yet to have an order correct. Every once in a while the food tastes really good and that is what keeps us trying. There is no consistency on quality or what actually ends up served. Maybe that should be how they market themselves. "Order what you 'think' you want and we'll decide what you actually get." If you like to gamble with your money and time, this is the place for you. I'm from Houston Texas where brisquet is the national food. The brisquet at the Hickory is far better than anything I've had in Texas. We're talking about the salt lick and all the holes in the wall in Austin TX. I can't believe how incredibly amazing this restaurant is. I've come here several times now and can't get enough. Ribs. I had the brisky business burger and it was great. Food seems to be hit or miss with some meals being excellent and others pretty poor. It was a perfect combination of brisket and burger meat on one single sandwich. $11.99 Half Rack Ribs: tender to a fault, though I found the sauce on them bland. Darn. We were looking forward to a nice experience with our family. Plenty of table space yet to took a very very long time to get seated. Poorly trained staff and not enough staff. Sandwich was very dry (turkey). THe bbq sandwich was watered down and the full rack of baby back ribs was dry. Not one server could manage a smile. They were overwhelmed and again UNDER trained We did have a bbq pizza appetizer and it was tasty. Probably because we were so hungry. What has happened? I've been eating at The Hickory for years. I mean YEARS and it was always our go-to date night. A few months ago, we got a bad meal there but decided that it was a fluke and tonight we tried it again. My hamburger was so well-done that the meat was extremely dry and charred. It was just disgusting but of course, I didn't ask them to redo it because I don't like to cause problems. And the new soggy steak fries do not help! Remember when the Hickory served the amazing hot and fresh hand-cut fries in a basket? Sigh. Me too. There has been a big decline in quality recently and I think it's so sad. The service was OK, but my biggest disappointment was the nasty burger and the soggy fries. read more

Let me first start by saying that I am a hardcore BBQ connoisseur. That being said, The Hickory is nowhere near the best BBQ I've had. In fact, in comparison with some of the best, I would honestly give it about a 5 or a 6 our of 10 stars. However, I'm giving it a 4 out of 5 here because I really appreciate a decent BBQ at low cost, ESPECIALLY in Rexburg. Rexburg is filled with crummy restaurants that nobody has heard of, some of them being not that bad but most just being terrible. But in a town with at least a dozen frozen yogurt and overpriced burger joints, The Hickory fills a niche currently unfilled. The price is astoundingly low for BBQ, and I would expect the prices to rise and this little place becomes more popular, which it undoubtedly will. The atmosphere is nice, new, and comfortable. The service is very friendly and attentive. From what I can tell, it is family owned. All of the staff and management are extremely nice and warm. The food came out decently quick. We came during the Christmas break, expecting it to be empty. To our surprise, there was a decent amount of people there, and we had to wait a little bit to be seated. All of the entrees come with choices of sides, and the portions are all fairly large. Their burgers and fries are good as well as their pies. Our friends that we ate with had been here a couple of times prior to going with us, and from what they were telling us, everything that they had ordered before was great as well. In all, we got fried Mac and Cheese as an appetizer (good but a little bland), two entrees, and a pie with ice cream for dessert, all for about $20. The entrees are about $6-$10 depending on what you order. Some of the entrees (ribs) are a little more from what I remember, but still VERY cheap for BBQ. In conclusion, this is a FANTASTIC addition to Rexburg. Again, not the best BBQ you'll ever have. In fact, Famous Dave's (which is also very far from being GOOD BBQ) in Idaho Falls is better and you get larger portions. However, you just simply can't beat the low prices at The Hickory and the convenience of having a decent BBQ place in town with nice, friendly service. We will be eating here again as long as the prices remain low. Update: Visited this place again, and the service was INCREDIBLY slow. Our food took about 30 minutes or longer to come out, and all we ordered were hamburgers. On a bright note, I ordered the "Big S burger"...wow. A burger, placed between two grilled cheese sandwiches. Been coming to The Hickory since they opened and for the most part I've been quite happy with my experiences. However, on my first visit to their new location I had three negative experiences. The first is that a "new policy" has them bring the fries of your meal out as an appetizer so they're fresh. This had me scratching my head, but whatever. The next is that a bottle of jalapeño ranch exploded because the lid wasn't securely on. Literally Ranch all over my arms, shirt, pants, the table, and even the floor behind me. Without so much as an apology the waitress laughed and said that it happens at least once a day. Finally, after all this we asked to speak with the manager. We were told, "the owner is too busy to come over, but you'll get some extra fries when your burger comes out." Then we proceeded to see the manager walking around picking up stray straw wrappers. I hope they change the weird fry policy and I hope the manager realizes that 90 seconds with a slightly upset customer is worth the the time spent. Definitely not my best restaurant experience, but it might be my worst. At least the food was good. Ending note: by the time I finished writing the my waitress informed us that the fry policy is now dead. That didn't take long and it earned back a star. read more

I've eaten here nearly 20 times while living here in Rexburg, both at their old location and current location. The best thing they had going for them was their Cheerwine soda, but they haven't offered this for some time now. I usually go here when friends push for it, but I don't get the hype. The meat is typically overcooked/dry, the mac and cheese is nearly flavorless, and the only things that I'd order again are fried. The intern meal is a good deal, so I usually go with that. The barbecue is pretty subpar for a restaurant named "The Hickory." If you're looking for good barbecue in Rexburg I would recommend Blisters over The Hickory any day. read more

I didn't realize at first because I was getting the baby's food cut up, I noticed things were not too hot for him, and thought, oh they made his first so it could cool down. Nope. All our food was barely warm. NOT OK. The pulled pork was dry, so hubby didn't eat it. The Mac and cheese that they said was sooo creamy and good.. No cheese flavor, and why would you put horseradish and chili powder in your Mac and cheese, gross! I saw many people didn't eat their Mac and cheese. My daughter gagged on it. Ribs, ok, need more sauce. Brisket, fatty.. Too fatty. The texture gagged me, it was slimey and fatty. You can smoke your meat with out burning it, and you should cook it longer to cook out more of the fat out. It should be cooked through, tender but not fatty. The green beans were a mixture of old canned green beans and new canned green beans with onions and bacon in them. They were ok. Biscuits were dry. And a little salty. Fried pickles, either use a thinner batter or use thicker pickles or pickle wedges, these were flavorless, best part of this dish was the jalapeño ranch, but that wasn't super. Gravy.. BLAND. It's ok if your gravy is the same color as your mashed spuds as long as it has flavor. Add pepper and salt. Will we be back? Maybe. You can smoke your meats without burning them. This was my first time eating here. Overall the staff was friendly and the food was quite good. However, had the ribeye and it just didn't have the seasonings that I was expecting ‍. Absolutely love this place. When visitors come into town, this is one of the few places in Rexburg I'm not embarrassed to take them. Servers are always happy and prompt, food portions are large, great selection, and about what you'd expect as far as price goes. Sometimes they get a little slow around lunch time, but what restaurant doesn't? I love the giant jars that they use as glasses. At most restaurants, I'm waiting on my drink to be refilled. The strawberry lemonade is awesome. The fries are fantastic and the coleslaw is as good as homemade. The mac and cheese is dry but still tasty, just not creamy at all. This last week I ordered the prime rib. Great flavor, but it was dry even though I ordered medium-rare. There was a lot of fat that I easily just cut off, but for some reason, the meat was still on the dry side. The au jus fixed that. The flavor was really fantastic. Quite honestly, I have been many times, each time worse than the last. My favorite item is the brisket sandwich, the first time I ordered it there was so much brisket on my sandwich that I couldn't even finish it, it was amazing! But after that, every time I got it, the brisket seemed older and over cooked. The most recent visit, I ordered the brisket sandwich and it only had 3 small pieces on it and tasted burnt and like it was 3 days old. Their new location is very nice. We went at 6pm on a Friday night and the place was VERY busy. We still didn't wait too long. The new building is much more spacious now which is great. The decor is enjoyable to look at. The service was pretty good. We were feeling like some Mac and cheese as a side so we asked if we could taste it first and our waitress brought us a sample. It was extremely dry(sauce-less), bland, and the cheese was not really melted. I don't know if it was just a bad night for the Mac and cheese but we obviously didn't order it. We ordered steaks(probably rib eye but I don't remember now) with a side of new potatoes and baked beans. Everything was so delicious that I had to force myself to stop eating so I wouldn't be sick. I got the honey badger burger. It was a delicious burger with great flavor, but very difficult to eat. The pastrami was a little burnt and the pulled pork a little dry.
