The side of chili beans was an 8 oz container filled to the brim with steamy hot ground beef and kidney beans. Great flavor and texture. My daughter had the tri tip sandwich on a garlic buttered roll. The sandwich was jammed packed with thin sliced tri tip. She has the macaroni and cheese. She loved it. The actual dough is like a marriage between a bagel and a croissant. It's lighter than a bagel, but it's flavorful and tender like a croissant, but not flaky. The egg salad filling is just right for my tastebuds, and it provides protein in a fancy, delicious fashion. Today there was a hint of savory garlic on the pastry, and that added a nice flavor accent. Today's sweet pastry was an open-faced tart filled with a smooth, light chocolate base, topped with creamy custard, and then sliced pears on top. Mmm. I like the choice of pears offering a hint of the autumn season ahead. The last time we had out of town guests staying with us, we took my them to Le Herisson one morning. FYI beef tallow is not healthier to cook with than seed oils. Seed oils in isolation is not inherently bad for you. In fact, there's an abundance of evidence that shows seed oils aka polyunsaturated fats reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and LDL cholesterol. The part that gets misunderstood (especially if you're relying on social media and influencers for health advice) is seed oils are usually used to cook ultra processed food which is a COMBINATION of high fat content, refined carbs, excess sodium and added sugars. So it's not the seed oils alone that's unhealthy. Polyunsaturated fats are a healthier alternative to saturated fats like beef tallow which is silly to consider for cooking because you're just adding more saturated fats which raises LDL cholesterol and increase the risk of heart health. So yeah thanks for coming to my TED talk. But in all seriousness just felt the need to spread the word. Really wish Makenna can just go back to cooking without beef tallow and then I can try their breakfast burrito and all the other deliciousness! Everything else was chill though. We barely got an inside table, but once seated near a window we were very comfortable. The waiter was professional and mostly attentive; although it seems like they are short-staffed and it does cause for some delays. I ordered the Tri-Tip Sandwich and my Partner ordered the Brisket Roll. We shared an order of their perfectly prepped fries. Both dishes were delicious and their ample sizes and fantastic bbq sauce earned them high ratings, from a value/cost ratio. So, now the reason for the one star reduction. We were planning to try the place a week earlier, on a Sunday evening, as we were hosting out of town guests. We live on the golf course, so it is a pleasant 20-minute walk. We had called earlier to check if we needed a reservation, they said no and then told us that they do not close until 9:00 PM. So, we walk over and timed our arrival for 7:30. When we arrive a waiter comes over to inform us that due to it being a slow night they shut down the entire kitchen, early. Besides us four we saw two other couples get turned away, at nearly the same time. For us, it meant a 20 minute walk back to the house before we could start to find a decent open alternative, which on a Sunday evening in Simi can be a real challenge. A decent restaurant should not fluctuate its hours just because they might have a slower than average night! The following Friday they were busting at the seams, so they need to take the good with the bad and at the very least, be dependable. That is, if they want a loyal following. Perhaps this is a one off, then if so I will happily bump this place to a 5-star. But until then we will be calling the place, as we head over, each time, just to make sure they will be honoring their advertised hours of business.
