Chef Mineko Ito, a French-trained pastry chef who studied at the prestigious Ferrandi school in Paris, brings a beautiful French-Japanese style to her pastries, combining classic French technique with Japanese flavors. If you go in summer do not skip the Japanese ice, The ice is flown in from Japan, and I had the strawberry. It was absolutely delicious--light, delicate, and incredibly refreshing. It's a special seasonal treat you won't want to miss. I also took a picture of the Matcha ice. I purchased the strawberry ganache pastry and also got a Matcha ice drink to go on ice. Everything was absolutely phenomenal. I also always appreciate a self-serve water station that's so pretty and maintained. Every aspect of Le Hérisson is so elevated, beautiful, and thoughtfully curated. My only little suggestion would be to consider putting the more delicate pastries, like the raspberry ganache I ordered, in a small box rather than a paper bag. I finally tried Le Harisson, the French-Japanese café and patisserie in Simi Valley, and I am so happy I did! I honestly don't know why I waited so long because wow everything was delicious. The flavors were bold, rich, and absolutely delightful. I ordered the Popeye, a fresh-baked puff pastry with egg, bacon, spinach, and Parmesan cheese, along with the Caprese Danish, which was my absolute favorite! It reminded me of a margherita pizza, and I will definitely be ordering it again. For my drink, I got the Iced Chocolate Blend, and the little girl in me was screaming with excitement it was so rich and delicious, almost like a lightly thick chocolate malt. It definitely did not disappoint! There was no greeting or welcome. She assisted us, but with visible reluctance. I tried to order a sandwich listed on the specials board near the pastry case, only to be told it was only available Monday through Thursday. I'm not sure why a specials board would list items that are only offered during the week. On a positive note, a gentleman on staff was kind and genuinely helpful. His service made a real difference. Plus the customers are very friendly. As for the pastries, I appreciate the concept of blending French and Japanese techniques. That's well-deserved high praise from the local community and visitors lucky enough to have found their way to this French/Japanese bakery cafe. It's a true gem for Simi. They're only open Thursdays through Sundays, so you need to plan your bakery fix for those days. Their pastries are Outstanding, specially any of them involving the flaky perfection of croissants, or croissant-adjacent offerings. We took our sister-in-law and two nieces when they were in town in late July. They were duly impressed. So much so that the next morning, SIL was up early and made a run over to the cafe for a specialty coffee and brought home pastries for all. Yay! Dear Hubby and I go over at least once or twice a month. We prefer to eat there, if we have the time. The petite tables placed closely together remind me of cafes / bistros that I've experience in Europe. DH has been making runs to Le Herisson lately on game days. He'll pick up an eggy pastry for each of us, and then something sweet to share. Today I was blown away by their egg salad on a super-fresh croissant. The egg salad is made with Japanese mayo, an extremely light interpretation of mayonnaise with minimal tangy vinegar taste. They also do a rounded pastry with egg salad inside that is also delicious. Easily a 9/10. My wife got the savory potato, tomato, and meat sauce pastry, which was also a 9/10. She also ordered the blueberry custard cream cheese danish and absolutely loved it--another 9/10. The only thing that missed the mark for us was the cinnamon banana bread pudding. It just wasn't our favorite (5/10). For drinks, I had the strawberry milk drink, which is more of a milkshake, (6/10) and the iced matcha chai (8/10). The drinks haven't really been the highlight for me either time we've visited, but they're not bad. What really stands out is the selection. I was immediately attracted to the jalapeño bacon bread, optics and all. It is like a mini loaf generously topped with its colorful ingredients. What attracted me most about it visually, was that there were lots of jalapeño slices. I had to have it. And yes, when I took it to go, warmed it back at home, several hours later, it held up. It was truly fantastic. Fresh and abundant jalapeño heat and mouth sensations. The dough in the bread is actually Japanese, nice and soft had the right chew, a distinct taste so much so, that you couldn't stop eating it. This place was a good find for me.
