I love the staff here they are super friendly and the ambiance is nice too! Always have a lot of people!!! We came here as soon as they opened and there was already a lot of people some are regulars too, so I was pretty confident that my experience will be good! Here comes the food! The food was great! I love my pastrami! They weren't supposed to have cheese on it but upon requesting it and how to make it they made it just for me! And it was delicious! The bread was good, the fries & onion rings were good as well and they give you plenty in a bag! I would highly recommend this place and I for sure will be back!

Went on 9/13. Place has bunch of seating and is always clean. Service is always good and fast. Decided to go out of my comfort zone today. Tried the chili cheese burger and fries. The chili is not my style i didnt like it and burger is huge couldn't finish it. Fries were soggy this time i was kind of sad they are normally crispy. I wont order chilli cheese burger again I'll stick with pastrami or French dip. Guess i went on a bad day this place is normally really good but i tend to go on ounch oljour during the week.

Stepping into The Hat feels so nostalgic - love the classic diner vibes. Pastrami sandwich was delicious and generously portioned. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient....would definitely come back again when I'm in the mood for pastrami!

Fries with Pastrami

The hat is a great classic greasy spoon for pastrami that originated in LA and has spread across the Southland. The restaurant in Lake Forest has plenty of seating in indoor and outdoor, and the staff are really nice. On this occasion I had Fries with pastrami and it was delicious! It is a little bit greasy, and I would've liked to have been able to order a smaller fries, because I ended up throwing away quite a bit of excess fries.

The Hat is a staple when you are in the mood for old-school fast food with big, no-nonsense portions. The best seller is definitely the World Famous Pastrami. But I really like their cold sandwiches. The ham and turkey on a French roll is simple but so good during this heat wave. And a single order of fries comes served in a giant paper bag that can easily feed two or three people. The prices are fair for the amount of food you get and it consistently hits the spot when I am craving straightforward service in a nostalgic diner.

Pat Pastrami Dip ($12.60), small Onion Rings ($4.85), and a side of Chili ($2.99). 3/7/2026

The Hat is the place that I come to for comfort food. Their Pastrami Dip ($12.60), Onion Rings ($4.85), and Chili side ($2.99) always hits the spot. Occasionally, I get their chili cheese fries, but I can never finish it with everything else that I want to order. They continue to serve up really good food with generous portions. I'm a bit bummed that they don't leave out the pickled peppers for self-serve anymore. You have to ask for them and they only give you a few at a time. Prices have gone up, but it is still a deal for the amount of food you get compared to other places. I like that they haven't updated the look of the place all these years because there is nostalgia in keeping things the way they are.

Very cool place. Staff is nice, food good, would prefer toasted bread for their pastrami but it's still tasty. Small onion rings are huge portion. $18 for both classes pastrami and small order of onion rings. A must try

I've been to several of The Hat locations and the Lake Forest one did not disappoint!!! The food is fresh, cooked to order, with generous portions. Be aware the large fries and onion rings can easily feed 3 people. We love their burgers, pastrami dips, fries, and onion rings. The food also comes out pretty quickly. Service is always great. So many workers moving the food along, cleaning the tables, and running the cash register. Even when they are busy, they have a great system (almost better than In-N-Out!). The dining area has an old school vibe which is nostalgic for me remembering the good old days of dining here as a teenager. It's clean and spacious. I wish they had a location in San Diego but I'll be definitely stopping by the next time I'm in the area!

Chili Fries with Pastrami and Onions added!

The Hat is a favorite in our house for many reasons. The interior reminds you of what an LA diner feels like. The staff is extremely kind. I purchased one of their 75th anniversary shirts and they showed me the different colors and explained the sizing! My favorite thing to get is the chili fries with pastrami and onion added on. It is indulgent but the combination can't be beat! I also love the pastrami burger because of the contrast with the tomato and lettuce and the pastrami. It's located in a shopping plaza so there's a lot of parking available. We've ordered to eat in and the drive thru and both are great options that give large portions!

Pastrami dip

The Hat in Lake Forest absolutely delivered. I ordered the pastrami dip sandwich with a small order of onion rings, and the portions were massive. Honestly, it was more than enough to split between two people. The pastrami was flavorful, tender, and stacked generously. And the onion rings were easily some of the best I've had -- perfectly crispy on the outside and still light inside. Service was great, staff were friendly and the place was not too busy. Parking is easy. If you're hungry and want solid comfort food with huge portions, this place does not disappoint. Definitely coming back.

The Hat is a classic SoCal chain, approaching its 75th anniversary this year! This was my first visit to the Lake Forest location and it was like stepping back in time. It looks exactly like something out of the 50's - from the signs behind the counter to the seating. For $12.60, you can get a pastrami sandwich, which is a deal! It's thinly sliced and fatty, with mustard and pickles. I shared mine and also got a tuna melt ($11.25) to make my meal a little healthier (LOL). Tuna melt was decent, though the tuna salad was still cold since it was added after the sandwich was grilled. The real star was the onion rings. I got a small order ($4.85) and got more than twice the amount I expected. If you like onion rings, The Hat is the place to go!

Roast Beef au Jus
Pauline S.

Haven't been to the Hat in a many years since I don't live close. Went back recently and it still holds true that their Roast Beef Au Jus is my favorite pastrami sandwich here in California with its tasty flavors. Size-wise, it doesn't look too big but it filled me up fast and was able to take the other half home. It does not come with a dip since it already comes pre-dipped. Also ordered a side of onion rings to split with my husband. The rings are huge, batter is nice and crunchy, and they give you a generous amount! Available for drive-thru and there are many indoor seats (diner style) and a few outdoor ones. We went on a Saturday night around 9pm and we didn't have to wait very long for the food.

Food is great 90% of the time, but my goodness, the prices keep going up. Also, no meals or deals. Times are tough, so give patrons a break.

Do they have gluten free?

I am here now and don't see gluten free on the menu

Anyone know what kind of meats are in their chili? EDIT: Although it's important, I'm not asking…

Good meat. Awesome chili cheese fries.

Do they accept Apple pay?

Yes, they do.

Do they use MSG?

I am not so sure about MSG ! However, I always got bad reaction whenever I had food with MSG especially in soup (stiff in the neck, extremely thirsty etc...) but at the HAT I didn't get any reaction at all, just feel thirsty because of high level of…

Do they have fried pickles?

Unfortunately they don't.

ISO (in search of) totally awesome kick butt Chili Cheese Fries in or near Huntington Beach. Any suggestions other than The Hat or Tommy's Original Hamburgers? (I've been looking for something like what is served at Tam's or The Hat). Thank you.

Charlie's Chili in Newport has some decent ones.

Do they lettuce wrap?

No, but the hat has no bun (protein style)

The citrus glaze was so good that my wife, who doesn't even like duck, kept going back for more. My son and I both had the ribeye, and both steaks were cooked perfectly. But I can't believe I'm saying this: the vegetables were what really got my attention. They were fresh, crisp, and full of flavor. My wife pointed out that I was eating more vegetables than steak, which is pretty much unheard of. I'd honestly go back for a bowl of those vegetables alone. These things could turn a carnivore into a vegan. And the steak was excellent, so that should tell you something. The drinks were just as good. My wife had the Lazy Days, a tequila cocktail with lychee and cilantro that puts a regular margarita to shame. I ordered the Don't Rye About It. I'm usually not much of a rye whiskey guy, but I'd order that one again without hesitation. There's so much else on the menu I want to try. As Arnold would say, "I'll be back."

Food was fine. We got the 45 day aged ribs-eye steak and the halibut special but it wasn't anything…read morespecial to note. Steak had a lot of sauce on it which made it very salty and couldn't taste just the meat. Halibut was the better dish. The inside was actually a lot louder than we expected for a nice restaurant. Outdoor patio was more quiet than the inside, so we sat in the patio. Now to the service part. When we first arrived our host was attentive. Saw from our reservation mentioned we are celebrating our anniversary. She congratulated us and asked us to wait a few minutes while the table is set. A large group came after us and they got seated right away, but we figured it was because it's a large group and their table was ready. Fine. Then another couple came after us. The host called us up, so we went, then they changed their mind. They sat the couple who came after us first. Thought, well that was confusing and weird. Why did they call us up if they're just going to seat the other couple first? Whatever, we got seated soon after next to another couple. Our waiter came and greeted us. Everything was fine until mid meal. Mid meal, our waiter went to the couple next to us and congratulated them on their anniversary and offered them a complimentary dessert. We thought "wow they're celebrating their anniversary too! And that's sweet". Then another couple got sat on the other side of us. As they sat, the waiter said "I see you're celebrating your anniversary. Happy Anniversary!". That's when we realized, same waiter didn't say anything to us when we got seated. "Huh." We finished our meal, even ordered dessert. Our waiter gave us our check and still nothing. No congratulations. No happy anniversary. We left the restaurant feeling treated different and not great. Clearly all 3 tables were celebrating their anniversary and were seated right next to each other. We mentioned it in our reservation and that's why the host knew. But why were we blatantly treated so different by our waiter? It was the obvious difference that made us leaving the restaurant feeling weird and discriminated against. Why the inconsistency? Next time we're celebrating anything, we're spending our money somewhere else.
