The New Chef and onion rings
    P O.

Craving grilled cheese for lunch. Found this place on Yelp. We ordered the New Chef $11.99 and the Basic $9.99(add tomato $1.24), also ordered the onion rings $4.99. Both grilled cheese are absolutely amazing. The New Chef had a Parmesan crust! Rich though, so we each only ate half and took the rest to go. Can't beat the price for such honest, nicely made and good size sandwich. Didn't expect much of the onion rings. It wasn't the usual huge beer batter rings, but it was nicely done, crunchy and crispy, flavorful and delicate. Only $4.99?! Hope this place will make it. It was Wed lunch and the outdoor seatings are packed. There are plenty lunch choices in this shopping center and most ppl are drawn to Hiro Nori or other "healthier" choices. Well, that's why I'm here to give this place a 5 stars hoping more ppl would give this place a try.

Grater Grilled Cheese caught my attention when I was on the plaza for other reasons. Who can say no to grilled cheese after all? So, of course, I had to stop by. The place itself is fine. Clean, friendly, simple. I tried their chicken grilled cheese pesto sammich, and it was really tasty solid sandwich, well made, no complaints about the flavor. But here's the problem... As tasty as the sandwich was, I just don't see how this place can survive long-term. Once you're done paying tax and tip, you're easily at $20 for a sandwich and that's without sides. The portions aren't that big either, so if you actually want to feel full, you'll end up spending $25-30 for just a sandwich and a pickle. Ehh no thanks. Include a side dish at least for that price. At that point, I'd rather just sit down at a proper restaurant and get a full plate of food. So yeah, it's good if you're craving a grilled cheese once in a while, but I don't see myself becoming a regular. You make your own call.

THANK GOD I DONT LIVE NEARBY!! hahahha this place is beyond amazing!!!!! I had gotten poke next door at bay poke and have always wondered about this place. WOWOWOWOWOWOWOOWW. I was so pleased to inform it was amazing!!! I did the chicken pesto but instead of getting pesto, I got garlic aioli and chipotle aioli, add grilled onions! Woahggh hahhaa I forgot all about my poke bowl and enjoyed my sandwich! The service was interesting, you do the order on a screen which sucks because you can't ask anyone questions. It'll be on them when technology takes over. Lmfao. The vibe is cool , it was empty, I would eat outside. Still check them out! But dont over do it, do exactly what you like!

Okay, I probably need to come back and try this place not on my lunch break at a new job, because I was frantic to order, eat my food in my car, and get back to work! I ordered the vegetarian grilled cheese and it was very filling and delicious- and I watched them make it fresh, which is awesome. The service was good and easy and the inside is small, but decorated cute. The plaza is crazy during lunch time, so be mindful, because parking will suck.

Omg I have never had such good patty melts until I tried out Grater. I found them on DoorDash and wasn't expecting much when I ordered. I loved every single bite of what I ordered. I didn't think I had it in me to devour two sandwiches and soup all in one sitting by myself. Everything was just THAT good tasting. Although I have problems digesting lactose, it was worth the pain and suffering afterwards. I think I may take a break from eating ramen and seriously considering ordering from them again tomorrow.

Cheesy goodness hits the spot! I love me a melty grilled cheese, this spot is great! I had the Smoked Belly Grilled Cheese, perfectly buttery, lots of cheese, nice and smoky! Located near a bunch of offices, parking is pretty bad during the lunch rush, so plan accordingly. The service was super quick, they had my sandwich ready in no time. Quick to grab and go, but there's clean indoor seating with plenty of seats if needed too.

We came here during the week, on a Wednesday for lunch and there was no one in the restaurant so we got to order right away. We ordered the Lobster Grilled Cheese and the Philly Grilled Cheese with a side of fries. When I went to go find a table, I wasn't satisfied with the table seating. Seats could use a little TLC and the dining area is a bit too intimate for my liking, so we settled to sit on the bar stools, close to the register which can be uncomfortable. Our food came out in good timing. There was lots of flavor in my Lobster Grilled Cheese and I especially liked the fries.

Came here on Saturday with 2 kids. They shared a "5-Cheese" special, and I had the pastrami, and we split an order of sweet potato tots. It was a disappointment all the way around. The kids 5-cheese was decent, indeed the highlight. The pastrami was thin with little meat. The sweet potato tots were subbed for sweet potato fries without asking us. The restaurant was loud with metal music; I'm ok for a good jam, but this was crazy loud. Want to use the bathroom? Sorry, it's out of service (where are the staff going to the bathroom?). Want to sit in the booth? Sorry, they have been slashed LONG ago, and never repaired. Won't be coming back.

This place is amazing! I need to go back to try out more. I got the mushroom truffle grilled cheese and my partner got the fiery torta grilled cheese. Both were incredible

Great spot for grilled cheese. Nice thick bread perfectly toasted. Really like their new breakfast menu but I wish it could be all day because I love eggs. Tried their: Bacon Melt - I really liked it. On par with more egg focused places. LA pastrami - bomb pastrami grilled cheese. Really like the chunks of pickle in it Breakfast Mac - it was ok Hash rounds - really good. Would prefer some sort of loaded breakfast hash rounds. Definitely pull up if you're in the mood for a good grilled cheese!

    Mushroom & Truffle Mac

We ordered the chicken pesto grilled cheese and the mushroom and truffle mac! The bread was perfectly crusty but also soft, perfect amount of cheese, no greasy at all, every bite was so perfect with flavor! The Mac and cheese was also 10/10!

Solid place for grilled cheese! I would have given if a five it my sandwich had way too much sauce on it, which kind of overwhelmed the other ingredients. Got the Chicken Pesto Grilled Cheese and was pleasantly surprised to find that the chicken was seasoned. The pesto aioli tasted like mayo and there was a lot of it, drowning the tomatoes and arugula. Overall it was a tasty sandwich. My husband got the Mushroom & Truffle Mac and cup of tomato basil soup, both of which he enjoyed. You could even taste the truffle oil in the mac! Will definitely come back again!

I ate the lobster grilled cheese It had a lot of cheese, an adequate amount of lobster. It was a little spicy but good.

I wanted to share some comprehensive feedback regarding a recent experience, aiming to highlight both your successes and areas where further refinement could elevate the customer journey even further. First and foremost, I must commend your team for their exceptional warmth and hospitality. From my initial phone call to the moment I picked up my order, I felt genuinely welcomed and valued. This level of customer service, which often feels lacking in many establishments today, truly sets American Grub apart. It creates a welcoming atmosphere that significantly enhances the overall experience, and I sincerely hope this commitment to friendliness remains a cornerstone of your operation. However, I encountered a couple of points that, in my personal opinion, warrant consideration for improvement. Regarding the payment process, I felt a degree of apprehension about providing my credit card details over the phone. While I understand the operational need to secure orders and prevent potential losses, particularly for larger transactions, for a single item like my bacon cheeseburger, priced at $17.24 including tax, this practice felt somewhat disproportionate. I also noted the 99-cent fee for online payments, which, while minor, might deter some customers who are seeking convenience without additional charges. Perhaps exploring alternative secure payment links for phone orders or adjusting the fee structure for smaller transactions could enhance customer comfort and streamline the process. My primary concern, however, arose upon returning home. Despite ordering a bacon cheeseburger, I discovered the burger completely lacked bacon, as well as any form of sauce or mayonnaise. This oversight had a significant impact on the meal; the absence of these core components rendered the burger quite bland and far from the experience I had anticipated. When ordering a single item, the expectation for meticulous attention to detail is particularly high, as there are fewer variables. Consequently, the overall value of the meal, given the missing ingredients, was not quite met on this occasion. I did reach out to the owner privately via email to discuss these points, and I appreciate their responsiveness and transparency in addressing my feedback, particularly concerning the rationale behind the phone payment policy. It is reassuring to know that your business is open to customer input. My hope is that these observations can serve as constructive input, allowing American Grub to continue refining its excellent service and product quality. I remain a supporter of your local endeavor and look forward to seeing these aspects addressed. Thank you for reaching out. To clarify, all my reviews and communications are crafted solely from my personal experiences and genuine perspectives, not AI. Every word and insight you read is authentically mine, driven by my commitment to provide honest feedback. Even though the review was long..(lol) I wanted to make sure the details are accurate and understandable. To put it simply: this is the kind of place Laguna has been missing. From the moment we walked in, the energy felt dialed-in in a way that immediately reminded me of a Hillstone experience -- polished but not pretentious, lively but still intimate. That balance is incredibly hard to execute, and Nix nails it. For context, I'm part owner of 230 Forest Avenue, so I don't say this lightly: Nix easily lands in my top five in Laguna Beach. We started with Aperol spritzes (perfectly balanced, not overly sweet), along with a couple of appetizers -- including a fried asparagus dish that was addictive in the best way. Crisp, flavorful, and gone way too quickly. For mains, I ordered the veggie burger, which was genuinely one of the best I've had -- hearty, well-seasoned, and thoughtfully constructed (not an afterthought, which vegetarian options so often are). My boyfriend had the noodle salad, which was fresh, vibrant, and layered with flavor. But beyond the food, what really stood out was the overall experience. The atmosphere feels intentional , great music, beautiful crowd, and a buzz that makes you want to linger. It's the kind of place where dinner effortlessly turns into drinks, and drinks turn into "should we just stay a little longer?" Laguna Beach doesn't have a ton of restaurants that hit this level across the board -- food, service, ambiance, and energy, but Nix absolutely does. We'll be back, and soon.
