I'm a frequent California Pizza Kitchen customer, especially at the Irvine location, and I have to give a very special shout-out to Karen. My mother and I had lunch there today, and Karen gave us, hands down, some of the best service we've ever received at CPK. She was incredibly warm, attentive, thoughtful, and genuinely kind. There's a big difference between simply providing good service and making guests feel truly welcomed and cared for, and Karen absolutely did the latter. She turned an ordinary lunch with my mom into such a memorable experience for both of us. That kind of hospitality is rare, and it deserves to be recognized. I am extremely disappointed with my experience at this California Pizza Kitchen location today. I placed a DoorDash order totaling over $80 for a work meeting, expecting it to arrive on time. Instead, I went through three different delivery drivers, all of whom were told my order was "not ready." When I finally called the restaurant myself, I was informed that the first driver had supposedly already picked up my order even though DoorDash still showed my order as actively being prepared and the driver never marked it as picked up. When I asked what verification process CPK has in place to ensure that the correct person is receiving a customer's order, I was told there essentially isn't one. That is completely unacceptable. Without verifying the driver's identity or confirming the pickup, anyone could potentially walk away with someone else's order. To make matters worse, the manager refused to speak with me over the phone. As a customer trying to resolve an $80+ missing order for a work meeting, the least I expected was the opportunity to speak with management. Unfortunately, this is not an isolated issue. Every time I order from this location, I end up waiting well over an hour for my food. The excessive wait times, lack of accountability, poor communication, and nonexistent verification process for DoorDash orders are unacceptable. This entire situation disrupted my work meeting, wasted my time, and left me without the food I had already paid for and unable to get a refund for! CPK needs to improve both its order verification procedures and its kitchen efficiency. Servers were not rude but not super hospitable. Pizzas were fantastic. What we ordered: - mushroom sausage pepperoni pizza: got this on the original crust. Lots of toppings, overall very nice and not too salty. - margherita: got this on the thin crust as suggested on the menu. Ended up coming here cause the InKind app was offering a 20% cash back offer. Where the food was okay, it's your usual neighborhood chain restaurant. Aesthetic & Ambiance: 7/10 large waiting area and giving off almost modern 2020 hotel revamp aesthetic. The ambiance is a bit busier at night, really recommend joining the waitlist. The crowd was families/dates and the volume was moderate. Service 8.5/10 our server was really good he was attentive and checked on us multiple times, even updating when things were dragging behind. BLUEBERRY LEMON DROP MARTINI: 7.5/10 a bit tart with a lot of lemon and a little strong, but that's the usual for a martini. SPARKLING BERRY-LEMON: 7/10 started off tasty but I don't think I stirred enough cause the flavor was concentrated at the bottom which gave the tail end a bit of a medicine taste. SZECHWAN CHICKEN DUMPLINGS(fried) - 8.5/10 They were a little over-fried and the filling was okay, it could use a bit more flavor, but the sauce was really tasty kind of carried the dish. We came with a large group today and had a reservation. At first, things looked great--drinks arrived promptly, and food followed soon after. I ordered the Italian chopped salad and tortilla soup, and both were delicious as always. A+ on the cucumber mocktail! When it came time for dessert, we chose the butter cake. I normally love butter cake, but this one was unfortunately stale and dry. What really soured the experience, though, was the service after the meals were served. Once entrées were delivered, it felt like we were completely ignored--by servers, bussers, and even managers. One of our cousins beers took 15 mins to get at one point. Our table was crowded with empty glasses and dirty plates for an extended time. When dessert finally arrived, instead of placing them on the table, our server handed them to us, forcing us to move our own plates to another table. CPK is a chain restaurant, it's not going to knock your socks off, but you will get consistent results according to the standard of a massive chain. The food is ok, it's not wonderful. The service is also ok, nothing spectacular but its fine for what you'd hope for. CPK does offer gluten free options, but please make sure you talk to the server and be clear if you're ordering gluten free so they can take cross contact precautions. Never in all my years as a server and mind you my first job was at a cpk have I ever heard of making someone get back on the waiting list... it was so weird and my daughter didn't understand and I was embarrassed to have been treated that way.... The manager and the hostess should have been kinder I would have bussed tables for them.... In the end we said bye and thank you to the hostess and she scowled at us, again another first in my life....it was the worst experience I have ever had a a restaurant and I will never return to this location... check my other cpk review it's night and day compared to this... mine and my daughters food were great but my friend got the filet minion salad and asked for a steak knife that could not cut into the meat it was as she said "like they microwaved it".... I have never sent food back we did not and we did not say anything because our server was so sweet and the manager was so rude... I didn't want to have my daughter experience her energy again... so maybe don't order a salad at a pizza place... The pizza was delicious! I love that the crust is not greasy and has signs of being cooked in a proper pizza oven. The little bits of char give it away, and I love the flavor! The avocado eggrolls are also really good. These are crispy and packed full of chicken, bacon, avocado, cheese, etc and served with ranch and a mildly spiced southwestern ranch dip. My only gripe is the $15 price tag for 6 pieces. Ouch. My daughter enjoyed her pizza, but when we got the receipt....about $1.50 to add olives on a cheese pizza?! That is an absolute premium for one topping. We won't do that again; just order as-is. We were generally happy with the food and the visit. I don't understand why our server reminded us twice that her section was "over there", and at the end a different person brought us our drink refills and the check.
