Rubio's is dying. Send help! Last month, Rubio's sent out a survey to rewards members, and if you completed the survey by the end of the month, you would get a reward for $5 off an entree. My visits to Rubio's are few and far in between. Prices have been going up, yet quality has been going in the opposite direction. About 50 locations, including the one closest to me, closed a couple years ago. I used to crave their Atlantic Salmon Burrito before the Lakewood location closed, and with this $5 off reward I got, made it a point to try that burrito for old times sake. And sadly, it just didn't feel the same. I arrived at about 8 PM on a Wednesday evening, and there was only one couple inside the fast casual restaurant sitting by the window. Two order kiosks were situated by the left wall, and I used one to place my order. After scanning my rewards code, I was trying to find the Atlantic Salmon Burrito on the menu, but had forgotten that names have changed recently. It took me a while to figure out that the Atlantic Salmon Burrito is now called the Coastal Catch Burrito; rather than tapping each burrito one by one on the kiosk, I had to read the overhead menu behind the front counter to discern that the Coastal Catch Burrito of today most resembled the Atlantic Salmon Burrito of yesteryear. The Coastal Catch Burrito comes with your choice of protein, making it more versatile than before. And, of course, I went with the salmon, which incurs an upcharge of just $2. They actually have 2 choices for salmon: Grilled Atlantic Salmon and Blackened Atlantic Salmon. I went with Grilled. I also like ordering on the kiosk because you can customize your order to include some extras at no additional cost. In the case of the Coastal Catch Burrito, I was able to snag extra cabbage blend, chipotle lime crema, and cilantro & onion. The burrito comes with a side, with chips being the most common, but I wanted to try the "no-fried" pinto beans since I had forgotten how good they were. I was impressed at how quickly my order was ready; I was expecting no less than 10 minutes, but it was ready in about 5-6 minutes. The burrito was a pretty sizable burrito that would have been worth the $9 to $10 that I spent after the $5 off. However, since my order was ready that quickly, it made me question how my burrito was prepared. And unfortunately, only the first bite of the burrito hit hard, likely because it was my first bite of such a burrito in over 2 years! Either that, or adding salsa just killed the flavor somehow, which I don't even know how that's possible! Well, with how dead the salsa bar looked, maybe it was possible after all. There were no hot sauce bottles at this salsa bar even though I've always seen the Diablo and the Jalapeno Citrus Hot Sauces at all the other locations I've been to. Why not this one?! Also, there were only four bowls of salsa to choose from, with one being filled to the brim. Interestingly enough, that bowl was the only salsa that didn't have a name tag, so I couldn't tell for sure if it was a mild salsa or a spicy picante salsa. They did have plenty of mild salsa left, but not too much tomatillo salsa, which is what I would have preferred for the Coastal Catch Burrito. Unfortunately, the mild salsa was more like mid salsa as it just killed the inherent flavor of the burrito. The tomatillo did one better than the mild, and I should have gotten two cups of the tomatillo salsa instead. Actually, I did get a second one, but that's only because as I was finishing the burrito, it started to collapse at the bottom. Luckily, all the contents fell on the plate, so I grabbed some extra salsa, jalapenos, and cilantro & onion mix to "vandalize" the remainder of my burrito. And I say "vandalize" because I was already dissatisfied with my overall experience at this Rubio's. The beans were also pretty bland, even when they had some cheese on top. With it being the end of the day, I probably got some from the bottom of a batch that had been sitting idly for a long time. Service was more bleh than meh. While I was looking at the menu trying to tell which of today's burritos was the Atlantic Salmon Burrito, a couple of employees had seen me, but didn't bother to help. Reminder, there were no other customers inside at the time except a couple eating by the window, so clearly, they were more interested in cleaning up close to the end of the day rather than the customers who dined rather late. Also, the girl whom I interacted with didn't want to be working there, which is kind of extreme for me to say, but she literally forgot to take the numbered flag after handing me my order! I had never seen that happen before, so I had to remind her that she had forgotten something. No smile from her either. Overall, a pretty disappointing visit to this Rubio's that, no joke, I even had to finish my dinner at Corner Bakery Cafe on the other side of Harvard Place Shopping Center! Update-The manager returned money from two of our bills. I put mine in the tip jar because I did not want a refund, just the corrected bill. She also gave us the rice and beans that were supposed to come with the meal. What we also discovered was our orders were not taken or charged correctly. Two people ordered the two taco meal which came with chips and beans. On each bill, the tacos were priced separately, which was much higher than the combination plate plus there were no chips and beans. So, it seems we are charged more than got less. While we don't understand why the manager had a change of heart, we appreciate her eventual efforts to make things right. What still bothers us as how this debacle happened in the first place. It is always difficult ordering at this restaurant. It takes a long time to get the order correct and that isn't a guarantee it will be. Worse, the bill is usually higher because the restaurant adds items up individually and not as a combination plate. Original post- Terrible service. It is ALWAYS a problem! It is painfully and needlessly slow. There were 10 people in line and one employee was working on to-go orders!!! We come here regularly and will never return. I have been trying to download their app for four months and have been unsuccessful. The manager was unable to successfully complete the app, too. We stopped by Rubio's Coastal Grill and honestly... so impressed! Everything tasted so fresh and flavorful. The tacos were AMAZING and perfectly filled, super satisfying, and honestly the perfect portion size. I loved how filling everything was without feeling too heavy. My daughter absolutely loved her bean and cheese burrito (always a win!), and my husband got the California burrito which was AMAZING as well. Everything came out tasting fresh and made just right. They also have a salsa bar with a great variety of salsas, and it was SO clean which I really appreciated. The whole restaurant was spotless, and the service was quick and efficient, making the experience even better. Overall, such a great spot for a casual meal that still feels high quality. I was craving Rubio's and so wanted to try their 7.99 fish and chips special along with the taco Tuesday deal. I ordered around 10:45 for a pickup at 11:45am. Unfortunately when I got there at 11:45, it was crazy. There was a huge line and people waiting for their orders. I thought since I had ordered well in advance for a set time, my order would be ready. I didn't walk out with my order until 12:15pm. A whole 30 minutes after I was supposed to pickup my order. I got two fish especial keto style(cheese) tacos. My order was sitting on their counter for a while waiting for the fish and chips to come. Pretty much everything became soggy by the time I was handed my food since one item took them a very long time. I think eating it fresh with the fish having a crunch would have been 100% better. But soggy tacos are a big no no on my end. I understand they have taco Tuesday, but this is not a new deal. They should try to manager it better. I felt bad because two men were waiting on catering orders that weren't ready. One said his pickup time was 11:40 and the other 11:45. The workers that were working the front were doing their best to get orders out quickly. I really hope they are better able to manage larger crowds on Tuesdays. This was sad all around. Yall Rubios is kinda slept on. I'm always on the lookout for a solid fast food salad (because sometimes I just want fast healthy food) and their chopped chicken salad always hits the spot. I like that the chipotle ranch comes on the side but there's a generous enough portion that it fully covers this rather large salad. Produce is always fresh and the chicken is grilled. It's been a very long time since I've had Rubios because the ones nearby closed down. The food here hit the right spot. The two burritos I had (shared half of each with hubby) were packed full. We were so stuffed. The kids enjoyed their build your own tacos kids meals, but one was disappointed that they gave rice instead of lettuce like our old location. Starting with the good -- the shrimp portion was excellent. Definitely felt like the "extra" actually meant something here, and they were cooked well. The rest of the bowl was also working in its favor. The corn blend was flavorful, the salsa verde brought brightness, the tajín added that citrusy kick, and overall the base of the bowl came together nicely. Everything outside of the protein had good harmony. Where things slipped was with the mahi mahi -- which was supposed to be the primary protein. There were only a few pieces in the entire bowl, and it honestly felt like an afterthought. For something that's the main add-on, you expect to actually notice it. On top of that, both proteins could have used a bit more seasoning to really stand out against the boldness of the rest of the ingredients. Service-wise, it was busy. The lunch rush had clearly hit hard, with only three people working the kitchen and two handling the front. There was a long table stacked with what looked like 20+ to-go orders waiting for pickup, which probably explains the 22-minute wait time from ordering to receiving the food. Not unreasonable given the rush, but definitely noticeable for a fast-casual spot. Seeing that many completed orders just sitting out did make me wonder how easy it would be for someone to walk in and grab the wrong bag. I spent over $30 on a quesadilla and burrito, and unfortunately, the food and service were both extremely disappointing. The chips were stale, and I paid extra to add chicken to my quesadilla, only to receive barely any chicken. What made things even worse was the wait. The restaurant was nearly empty, yet it took 30 minutes for our food to come out. While waiting, another customer came up to check on his order, and I overheard staff laughing and saying, "It will come out when it comes out." That attitude was honestly more disappointing than the food itself. I've been a fan of Rubio's for a long time, which makes this experience even more frustrating. I understand that restaurants can have an off day, but the combination of poor food quality, excessive wait time, and the lack of customer service made this a really disappointing visit. I saw their ad on facebook for the 7+ menu. I tried the fish and chips which is not bad, a little bit on the dry side. Service was decent, this is a counter order and someone bring food to your table but not a full service restaurant. A salsa bar is available. They also have Taco Tuesday, I may try that some other time. The 7+ menu also mentions two taco and one drinks for $7. I also would like to try that next time. One of my favorite Taco Tuesday spots. I have been a big fan of their tacos since high school. I love that they extended the Taco Tuesday deal to the chicken and steak, and the deal goes all day long. Their no-fried beans are amazing and healthy, along with the guacamole and chips. The churros are really good too. One of my friends who's a chef eats here every week. It's high quality, perfect recipes, flavorful and decently priced. I ordered my food to go and was standing up for around 15 minutes waiting for my food to be called and it never was. California bowl was great - a large bowl of rice, black beans, your meat of choice (i chose chicken), salsa, guacamole, tomatoes, etc. For some reason, it felt like an at home meal that I needed today. So fresh and well prepared! I've never had a juicier piece of fish in a taco, let alone a fast casual taco. The original Baja taco was similarly juicy and hot. I sent our complaint through their site and got a reply from the district manager - Kimberly. She apologized, but offered no compensation. Got the two taco plate which is served with two tacos of your choice with "no-fried" pinto beans and tortilla chips and a slice of lime. This place has food. It's fast food without fanfare. I was expecting more but can't complain because we just needed to eat. My burrito however didn't have a good spread of ingredients so at times I just got rice; other times just pork and beans. Flavor was ok for what I paid for.
