I love the staff here they are super friendly and the ambiance is nice too! Always have a lot of people!!! We came here as soon as they opened and there was already a lot of people some are regulars too, so I was pretty confident that my experience will be good! Here comes the food! The food was great! I love my pastrami! They weren't supposed to have cheese on it but upon requesting it and how to make it they made it just for me! And it was delicious! The bread was good, the fries & onion rings were good as well and they give you plenty in a bag! I would highly recommend this place and I for sure will be back!

Went on 9/13. Place has bunch of seating and is always clean. Service is always good and fast. Decided to go out of my comfort zone today. Tried the chili cheese burger and fries. The chili is not my style i didnt like it and burger is huge couldn't finish it. Fries were soggy this time i was kind of sad they are normally crispy. I wont order chilli cheese burger again I'll stick with pastrami or French dip. Guess i went on a bad day this place is normally really good but i tend to go on ounch oljour during the week.

Stepping into The Hat feels so nostalgic - love the classic diner vibes. Pastrami sandwich was delicious and generously portioned. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient....would definitely come back again when I'm in the mood for pastrami!

Fries with Pastrami

The hat is a great classic greasy spoon for pastrami that originated in LA and has spread across the Southland. The restaurant in Lake Forest has plenty of seating in indoor and outdoor, and the staff are really nice. On this occasion I had Fries with pastrami and it was delicious! It is a little bit greasy, and I would've liked to have been able to order a smaller fries, because I ended up throwing away quite a bit of excess fries.

The Hat is a staple when you are in the mood for old-school fast food with big, no-nonsense portions. The best seller is definitely the World Famous Pastrami. But I really like their cold sandwiches. The ham and turkey on a French roll is simple but so good during this heat wave. And a single order of fries comes served in a giant paper bag that can easily feed two or three people. The prices are fair for the amount of food you get and it consistently hits the spot when I am craving straightforward service in a nostalgic diner.

The Hat is the place that I come to for comfort food. Their Pastrami Dip ($12.60), Onion Rings ($4.85), and Chili side ($2.99) always hits the spot. Occasionally, I get their chili cheese fries, but I can never finish it with everything else that I want to order. They continue to serve up really good food with generous portions. I'm a bit bummed that they don't leave out the pickled peppers for self-serve anymore. You have to ask for them and they only give you a few at a time. Prices have gone up, but it is still a deal for the amount of food you get compared to other places. I like that they haven't updated the look of the place all these years because there is nostalgia in keeping things the way they are.

Very cool place. Staff is nice, food good, would prefer toasted bread for their pastrami but it's still tasty. Small onion rings are huge portion. $18 for both classes pastrami and small order of onion rings. A must try

I've been to several of The Hat locations and the Lake Forest one did not disappoint!!! The food is fresh, cooked to order, with generous portions. Be aware the large fries and onion rings can easily feed 3 people. We love their burgers, pastrami dips, fries, and onion rings. The food also comes out pretty quickly. Service is always great. So many workers moving the food along, cleaning the tables, and running the cash register. Even when they are busy, they have a great system (almost better than In-N-Out!). The dining area has an old school vibe which is nostalgic for me remembering the good old days of dining here as a teenager. It's clean and spacious. I wish they had a location in San Diego but I'll be definitely stopping by the next time I'm in the area!

Chili Fries with Pastrami and Onions added!

The Hat is a favorite in our house for many reasons. The interior reminds you of what an LA diner feels like. The staff is extremely kind. I purchased one of their 75th anniversary shirts and they showed me the different colors and explained the sizing! My favorite thing to get is the chili fries with pastrami and onion added on. It is indulgent but the combination can't be beat! I also love the pastrami burger because of the contrast with the tomato and lettuce and the pastrami. It's located in a shopping plaza so there's a lot of parking available. We've ordered to eat in and the drive thru and both are great options that give large portions!

Pastrami dip

The Hat in Lake Forest absolutely delivered. I ordered the pastrami dip sandwich with a small order of onion rings, and the portions were massive. Honestly, it was more than enough to split between two people. The pastrami was flavorful, tender, and stacked generously. And the onion rings were easily some of the best I've had -- perfectly crispy on the outside and still light inside. Service was great, staff were friendly and the place was not too busy. Parking is easy. If you're hungry and want solid comfort food with huge portions, this place does not disappoint. Definitely coming back.

The Hat is a classic SoCal chain, approaching its 75th anniversary this year! This was my first visit to the Lake Forest location and it was like stepping back in time. It looks exactly like something out of the 50's - from the signs behind the counter to the seating. For $12.60, you can get a pastrami sandwich, which is a deal! It's thinly sliced and fatty, with mustard and pickles. I shared mine and also got a tuna melt ($11.25) to make my meal a little healthier (LOL). Tuna melt was decent, though the tuna salad was still cold since it was added after the sandwich was grilled. The real star was the onion rings. I got a small order ($4.85) and got more than twice the amount I expected. If you like onion rings, The Hat is the place to go!

Roast Beef au Jus
Pauline S.

Haven't been to the Hat in a many years since I don't live close. Went back recently and it still holds true that their Roast Beef Au Jus is my favorite pastrami sandwich here in California with its tasty flavors. Size-wise, it doesn't look too big but it filled me up fast and was able to take the other half home. It does not come with a dip since it already comes pre-dipped. Also ordered a side of onion rings to split with my husband. The rings are huge, batter is nice and crunchy, and they give you a generous amount! Available for drive-thru and there are many indoor seats (diner style) and a few outdoor ones. We went on a Saturday night around 9pm and we didn't have to wait very long for the food.

Do they have gluten free?

I am here now and don't see gluten free on the menu

Anyone know what kind of meats are in their chili? EDIT: Although it's important, I'm not asking…

Good meat. Awesome chili cheese fries.

Do they accept Apple pay?

Yes, they do.

Do they use MSG?

I am not so sure about MSG ! However, I always got bad reaction whenever I had food with MSG especially in soup (stiff in the neck, extremely thirsty etc...) but at the HAT I didn't get any reaction at all, just feel thirsty because of high level of…

Do they have fried pickles?

Unfortunately they don't.

ISO (in search of) totally awesome kick butt Chili Cheese Fries in or near Huntington Beach. Any suggestions other than The Hat or Tommy's Original Hamburgers? (I've been looking for something like what is served at Tam's or The Hat). Thank you.

Charlie's Chili in Newport has some decent ones.

Do they lettuce wrap?

No, but the hat has no bun (protein style)

Inside was decorated really nice, the ambiance was cute and everything was very clean. The service was great, we were unsure on the drink so the cashier made a good recommendation. The pesto chicken sando is what we came for and I was not a total fan of it. I think I was expecting more of a burst of flavor, but it truly tasted how it sounds - chicken with pesto and arugula. The star of the sandwich was the marinated tomatoes, these were fantastic, I wish there were more tomatoes and slightly less chicken to get a more even ratio going. For the price point, I wouldn't get this again. All in all, the sandwich wasn't bad, it was just as expected. Will have to check out the egg salad sando and the beef sando next time, they looked great! The prime beef curry bread was delicious, very tender chunks of beef and the curry had a slight spice. Really good panko crusted bread. Would get this again! The honey toast was great as well, it tasted almost like a custard on top. Had a nice crust and fluffy interior. The Goma matcha latte was not my favorite, it was very Goma forward and I couldn't really taste the matcha. Additionally, it was a little clumpy so when you would sip it you would get a clump of Goma. If I came back, I would likely stick to the pastries as they were standard priced and pretty big for that price. The sandos, I may or may not try again, they were all around $16+ and were stuffed, but still on the small size. I am glad I tried it!

We ordered five sandwiches: Padang Padang, the Reuben and Pastrami sandwiches, Maverick's, and Brooke Street. The food doesn't come out super fast like a fast food place, but we didn't mind since we had time and appreciated the fact that this was due to the sandwiches being made fresh and on the spot. The owner even gave our three kids free juice boxes so the wait definitely went faster! When our sandwiches came out, we ate nearly everything even though these sandwiches are quite big and packed. Padang Padang had a nice little kick, which I barely noticed because of how quickly I ate it. Our oldest ate her half and wanted the other half immediately. And our youngest who is going through a picky stage ate half of the Reuben and half of the pastrami. My husband ended up with mustard on the back of his shirt, and didn't even remember how it got there This place is a legit sandwich spot. We'd definitely go again if we're ever in the area again.

It's inside of a very small courtyard that used to have a couple more shops and dance studios. There's even a large 24 hour fitness which turned into a different fitness center that you would think would help pump up the area, but I think that fitness place is also closed. The courtyard that second reef deli is located in has spaces for a handful of interesting food spots and could be a great place for people to socialize and hang out. There is a Mexican restaurant called flamingos located just behind the courtyard but I think that's more of a nighttime spot although they are open at 11 AM for lunch. With regards to the sandwiches at second deli, you really can't go wrong. The Sandwiches are all names of surf spots. I love that they serve sprouts and squaw bread which is really hard to find. The #11 Padang is really popular for the hot sandwiches as well as one called Blacks. That's a tuna melt! The Brooks on squaw and the Mavericks which comes on squaw are my favorite go to choices for cold sandwiches. I hope they continue to thrive in this location and that it improves around them. I've been a customer of theirs for at least 10 years!
