Pretty disappointing experience. I found out that their fries are cooked in the same oil as the bacon, which was discovered by finding large chunks of bacon in our fries. That kind of cross contamination/presentation was pretty gross honestly.  On top of that, I used a discount card that clearly advertised a free appetizer, but after we ordered the flowering onion, we were told it didn't qualify. Between the lack of transparency and not honoring the promotion as expected, it just didn't sit right

Meatball appetizer, big and rich in flavor with meatballs not too soft or hard. Great with warm bread that was provided. Main course was beyond big and easily two meals on each platting. Chicken parm was tender and nicely seasoned with pasta side. I had a special of peppers and onions in a spicy red sauce with crumbled sausage and bucatini as the pasta. It was cooked well and had a nice warm spice, but not over powering heat, easily two meals. Drink prices were market priced with a wine $ 8.00 for a good pour. Server was personable and attentive throughout our visit. It would appear the kitchen is small and staffed accordingly. I hear they limit take out orders when very busy and best to call ahead for complete info on a weekend. Overall great experience and will visit again.

The place is small and has some nods to history via the wall mural. We were prepared to have a long wait (about an hour from seating to eating) as they make all dishes from scratch. Most groups were ordering pizzas and we opted for a meatball parm sub and their haddock puttanesca special. There were two servers on for the evening covering and they seemed overwhelmed by the rush which was not our experience before. While the food wait was expected it did take a considerable amount of time to get out drink order taken and then to have it arrive. In between ordering and getting our drinks I noted out server taking care of 2 other tables bringing out food and drinks. It took about half an hour for the bread to arrive at the table. The puttanesca was good and well seasoned but the meatball parm sub and fries were surprisingly under seasoned. We may be back again but will probably not go in when they are nearly full again.

Five of us from the German-American Club of Albany NY had dinner here on Thursday July 30, 2026…read more Highly recommended by one of our party who had been here previously with other members of the GACA. Opened by Christian Rath in September 2023, it features dishes learned from his long career in food service. Spargel is the German word for Asparagus. This is a comprehensive tour of authentic German cusines from many regions of Germany. Just explore the menu options on the website. We started with a variety of Paulaner draft beers at the bar with the knowledgeable, Beau. Our server at our table was Kelly L. She was very helpful explaining the different dishes and provided excellent service. We started with two of their famous suppe (soup) - Spargelcremesuppe - gream of asparagus w/ garlic croutons ($8.50) and the most popular seasonal Cream of Yellow Chatrelle Mushroom Suppe w/ bacon & onion ($15.50). Unique to us and delicious. Dinners were trio of wild game sausages-wild boar, rabbit, & elk served w/homefries, red cabbage, & ligonberry sause ($34.50), Schweinelende-pan-seared pork tenderloins w/yellow chantrelle sauce, potato croquettes, and bacon wrapped green beans ($36.50), Gebratene Schweine Haxe-pork shank slow roasted with dunckel (dark) beer sauce w/ potato dumplings & sauerkraut ($35). The last dinner was the Bavarian Sampler Tour of German Cusine for Two - 12 items on this platter ($80). Our party of five could have shared this dish. It was Wunderbar! Spargel serves authentic & unique dinners along with the familiar such as Rouladen, Schnitzels, & Goulash. Desserts were creme brulee Grand Manier ($12.50) & apple strudel w/ warm vanilla sauce ($9.50). Their online menu is a must see before a visit. Outstanding meals & excellent service. Danke to Kelly L., Beau, Christian, and chefs. Open: Wednesday - Sunday: 4:00 pm - 9:00 pm Nick & Liz, Judy, Shannon & Todd GACA Albany, NY USA

Don't be deceived by the lack of totally booked time slots when reviewing their reservation listing…read moreonline. It does not mean the restaurant will not be busy if you arrive without a reservation or that you will have a choice of many vacant tables to sit at. This restaurant draws a crowd and deservingly so. Their parking lot had a lot of cars when we arrived on a Thursday evening around 6:15. Fortunately, we were quite agreeable to sitting at a booth in the bar area. The ambiance is warm and welcoming with a mixture of booths and tables in two separate dining areas separated by the bar with booths and high-tops. The staff are friendly, efficient, and their efforts to maintain a clean establishment is obvious from the wiping down of menus before handing them to you, the cleaning of booths and tables as they become vacant, and the cleanliness of the restrooms. The menu is lengthy with a good selection of classic German dishes and some that you may not be as familiar with. One page in the menu is devoted to specials that change weekly; another to the various German beers available; there is even a page with food more likely to keep children happy. While we perused the menu we had a bottle of Gerolsteiner Sparkling Mineral Water ($10) and a half liter of Hacker-Pschorr Dark Weissbier ($10). While the beer was served "American cold" the flavors improved greatly once the temperature achieved "European cellar." Complimentary pretzel rolls were served with a slab of soft butter with hot honey. The rolls were fresh, warm, and delicious with the butter and honey. My wife ordered the Cream of Yellow Chantrelle Mushrooms Soup ($15.50) as her appetizer from the weekly features. It was a wonderfully flavorful and large portion. In fact, every item we ordered was an abundant serving. I chose the Backers mit Apfel Sauce ($10.50) [potato pancakes]. The three large crispy pancakes were not exactly like what I remember my mom making, and that I loved, but they were delicious. Both of us having eaten all of our appetizers, we probably could have considered ourselves satiated at this point. But we had eyed other entrées that we were anxious to try. My wife chose the Almond and Dijon mustard Encrusted Seawolf Filet ($34). It was served with butter potatoes and sauteed spinach. Seawolf is a mild flavored and light, yet firm textured fish, kind of a cross between cod and lobster. It was very tasty and went well with the potatoes and spinach. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to try Rabbit Loin "Spargel" ($38.50). Here's what made this sound so inviting - boneless rabbit stuffed with asparagus and wrapped in applewood smoked bacon, pan seared and served on top of potato gnocchi in a creamy gorgonzola sauce with peppers and spring onions. YUM! How could I not try this. The stuffed rabbit seemed a little dry, but my wife reminded me that rabbits have very little fat. It really didn't matter. The creamy gorgonzola sauce was the perfect accompaniment to the hare and the softness of the gnocchi was a delightful textural addition. Thankfully, planning ahead to take some of our entrées home allowed us to still order dessert. My wife had the Apfel Strudel mit Schlag und Vanilla Sauce ($9.50). They additionally added a raspberry sauce to complement the pastry and vanilla. Overall, very tasty. I decided to try the Trio of Chocolate Mousse ($12.50) - again, a generous portion each of chocolate, vanilla, and nougat mousse. Each flavor was soooo rich and creamy. The whipped cream actually helped to cut some of the richness. I'm sure we'll be back to try some of the more traditional German food. Maybe we'll just share some apps.

Our waiter was super attentive and even though it took some time for the food to come out, I think given the quality of everything we ate, it was worth it. I got the raspberry mint mojito cocktail which was delicious and I pinched a sip or two of kid's lemonade made from fresh lemons, perfect level of sweetness. We tried the sweet potato pakoras and lumpia and the trio of house made dips (we liked the green mint-e one best). Everything was tasty, including the sauces that came up with them. Our kids shared the ramen which they split into two large bowls that didn't even look like a split dish given how much it was. My wife got the spare ribs which melted off the bones and had great flavor. The scallop dish I ordered came with six scallops that were a good size and also came with some gnocci, a delicious and unique sauce, and an unusual lobster with veggie type of ceviche salad accoutrement. I have the sense that the menu changes regularly here. The chef/owner came out and greeted us after the meal to ask how everything was and we could honestly respond that it was our best meal of the week. Subsequently we tried to sample many items from their desert menu and again Bastard did not disappoint. Surprisingly the "S'Mores," a more adult take on the kid's classic, was one of our favorites. Given the unique take on a variety of globally inspired dishes and great attention to detail, I would love to try Bastard again the next time I'm in the area.

The menu remains Old School but somewhat limited to the tried and true oldies along with some little surprises springled in here and there. The the white bean sausage soup was bursting with Old World home cooked flavor and nonna nostalgia, what a treat. The Lasagna, seasoned with meatballs and and sausage, is a classic; thoroughly delicious and enjoyable. Now for the Eggplant Parm! Many Italian restaurants of late in order to cope with rising food costs have reduced portion sizes and no where is that more evident than in the Eggplant, Chicken and Veal Parms. Eggplant slice thicknesses have seen a steady decline in some of our favorite Italian restaurants in our hometown area. The breading has literally taken over as the Eggplant flavor has virtually been lost as it was sliced so thin. Not the case at Massie's portion size is more than adequate with a substantial slice of eggplant restoring the eggplant as the real star of the dish. Both of us agreed that this was one of the best Eggplant Parmigian we've had in a very long time. If there is one critique it would be the dessert at $14, we would have expected a piece slightly larger given the fact that everything on the menu is ala carte. Massie's still delivers the goods and well remain our stop when traveling in the area.
