I have been a big fan of Halal Guys since they were a food truck in NYC. I was stoked when they opened a location in Dunn Loring and was actually present on their grand opening day. I recommend ordering the combo platter (mixture of chicken and gyro meat). OMG, its so good. I smothered my platter with white yogurt sauce and the very spicy red sauce. I can eat the large platter in two sittings. Its a good amount of food. When the restaurant first opened, I thought their rice was too greasy and made eating the dish unappealing. When asked about tabbouleh, she pulled out an old box from inside the bottom cabinet instead of taking fresh stock from the counter. When we objected, she packed some fresh stock in a box HOWEVER at the time of payment, very cleverly switched our new box with old stale one that she had. I've eaten here many times and I used to love it. I think their quality has gotten worse in the last few years, but it's still fairly good. Especially considering the portion they give for the price. This location, however, does a good job at giving you the feel of the original fast-paced food cart. The man working was friendly, and staff was fairly quick considering the line of people coming in and out. There is VERY limited seating inside, so be wary of that. Prices are more expensive here than NYC, and I do feel like you get less food compared to the original cart. Like my friend and I discussed, "it tastes a little different, but it still is doable" if you have cravings for their chicken or beef platters and don't want to drive 5 hours!! I was in New York about a month ago and saw their food cart but I didn't get a chance to try them, so when my friends suggested we go to Halal Guys in Merrifield, I figured why not. We were there on a Sunday evening around 8 pm and we got pretty lucky because as soon as we ordered, the line was out the door. I ordered a small rice and gyro bowl. There was plenty of meat in my bowl, but that didn't matter because the taste was just whatever. The whole dish was way too greasy and didn't taste like something I would want to have again. Their hot sauce is phenomenal but only IF you can truly handle spicy. I suggest trying it first and then adding it little by little to your meal. My friends and I were sweating profusely after adding the sauce, but we were smiling nonetheless lol The employees were super friendly. First of all I'm so excited they're expanding! I became a fan after my best friend introduced me to the famous NYC cart - so much that we'd order extra to take back home to VA. The place is really small and not much seating. So plan on taking to go or eating it outside when it's nice. The atmosphere is like in NYC. Quick ordering and the line goes by really quick. I usually get the chicken platter with no sauces - go ahead and judge me, but I don't eat creamy white sauces lol. The chicken is pretty moist here compared to the NYC cart. Everything tastes really fresh. What I love is that you really get the bang for your buck. One platter is $7 and it'll last me two meals because portions are so much - if you eat a lot then maybe one meal. Definitely coming back! So happy Halal Guys came to the DMV, and that I no longer have to trek to New York and bring back 10 platters for family and friends! Halal Guys officially opens on September 3, but they are having a soft opening on September 2. From now until then, they are doing a 'VIP' preopening where you can purchase a platter and drink for $7. You have to go to halalguysdc.com to get a VIP ticket. I got the chicken and gyro and rice combo platter with no salad, drizzled in the white sauce and a dash of the hot sauce. The hot sauce is not your basic hot sauce, but 20x spicier, so be very careful before dousing your plate with this sauce. You can get salad on the side of your platter, but I generally find that it doesn't do much for me (chopped iceberg and tomatoes). The platter is also served with slices of warm, soft pita, which is very helpful for cooling down your mouth in the event you accidentally over-drench your plate in hot sauce. After seeing the hype, I knew I had to try it. This location is small and located near the Dunn lording metro station. I came on a Sunday around 2pm and the place was pretty full. Seating is very limited but I got lucky and snatched the last hi-top chair available near the counter. The menu is pretty basic. You choose chicken, gyro or both and then can do a platter or wrap. I did the small platter for $6.99 with chicken. The platter comes with their yellow rice, chopped tomatoes and lettuce as well as your choice of meat, pita and their white sauce drizzled on top. I was so excited because this reminds me of Chicken Kitchen (Hi Florida! I miss Chicken Kitchen) which serves up the same mix of ingredients. The Halal Guys is tasty but their white sauce was nothing special. It's not very flavorful and kind of just lost itself in the rice and lettuce when I mixed it. Their chicken is pretty tasty and overall I thought the small platter is a very filling dish. Despite passing this location all the time, I have never actually gone in. I was a fan of Halal Guys when I was a meat eater living in NYC, but now that I'm vegan I didn't think they had anything to offer. Until a couple of days ago they launched a new meatless gyro (pea protein) and tzatziki sauce made with aquafaba that goes with it. I called to make sure their pita is vegan and they said it was. So I got the gyro sandwich with the meatless gyro, tomatoes, onions, and green peppers. Say no to iceberg lettuce if you don't want fillers blocking your food. And no to white sauce and the horrible tasting red/spicy sauce. They gave the tzatziki and tahini on the side. I was a little scared since it is such a meat heavy place and I wanted them to get it right without putting some steak or whatever in the food. So I took a little bite of the gyro to see if it had the vegan/light/fake meat taste. And it did, so it's a good thing that the vegan meats don't have the exact same texture and taste as actual meat because otherwise we couldn't tell the difference! It wasn't greasy at all and it's flavor was a little subdued compared to meat which I'm fine with. I remember eating the humongous platters at 2am in NYC and when I was done, I felt horrible like I had abused my body with such garbage (not to mention killed and tortured a few animals). Not to say that even the vegan version of a gyro with the thick pita is the epitome of health or anything, but it's something to satisfy your curiosity if you have a history with the place. When I went in to pick up the order, they had a huge sign where their menu is promoting the vegan sandwich. How nice! I really liked the sandwich- it had the right amount of filling and the tzatziki was amazing. I come here every week, because I have class until 10 PM and Halal Guys is the only place that is open until 11 PM in Merrifield other than Wendy's and McD's. To be honest, I am addicted to Halal Guys. However, I really do not know why. The orange rice here is drier than the Atacama Desert, the second driest place on Earth - the first being inside the Halal Guys food containers. The lettuce, chicken and beef are also dry. I would get tomatoes, but it's a waste of space in platter. Saving the combo platter with its awesomeness and moistness, the white sauce gets fire-hosed onto my platter, along with drips of the spicy sauce that burns my mouth with flavor and covers the staleness of the rice and meat. When I first came to this restaurant, they consistently skimped me on the portion sizes, leaving half the platter for the salad and tomatoes. Having to pay an extra $2.50 ($9.50/regular platter) more than the price at the carts in New York, I always ask for a small portion of salad and then haggle them to give me extra rice and beef. Because of this, they know me by name now and give me my modified order without me asking. That is why I come back and that is why I am giving them 3 stars, albeit the cardboard food. I visited this location about a month ago and my first time at this one but I've been to the Springfield location as well. This visit definitely had me wondering about consistency and what Halal Guys is doing at this location. I got a combination platter with gyro and chicken (because yessss always). Same great flavors and big portions but there were some areas that had me thinking that I won't be back at this location. The customer service was pretty much non-existent as the staff barely spoke a word to us. I saw that they made the regular platters fresh but the small ones were pre-scooped with salad and rice....maybe they should just make them all fresh? Last but not least, there was no meat on a spit or sizzling piles of meat--only meat that was heated up to order. Also the bread had a sour taste to it. Trust, this is difficult for me to say because Halal Guys is sooo good otherwise. The white sauce will always be on point. It's like French food where sauce is king, their flavor is in the sauce. So kudos to their sauces. The food is good and value for money, you could easily make 2 meals out of this one.
