It's crazy that this place doesn't have all 5-Star reviews. Halal Guys is probably the best Middle Eastern food I've ever had. They give you a generous amount, the rice, proteins and veggies are all fresh and tasty, PLUS they have this white sauce that I would purchase by the gallon and put on everything if I could. The red sauce is also good, but be cautious as it will leave your mouth blazing. The staff was very friendly and even took the time to walk around and check on us and ask people if they wanted extra white sauce (and believe me, you will want extra white sauce). Buford Highway is a surplus of diversity and culture, and Halal Guys just makes it that much better. Definitely give it a try! read more

Because I'm from the northeast (namely the tri-state area), I know a thing or two about the original Halal Guys and how it should be. However, I think we all get it now: it's not New York. I've personally decided to skip the comparison game and just appreciate it for what it is. The portions and the pricing may not be the same, but it's still pretty good for the price. The quality/taste of the ingredients is pretty comparable, and you're not going to find anything like it in Atlanta. I've been here multiple times to fulfill my CNR craving, and I haven't been disappointed. Service was pretty impressive. Every now and then, they'll have a worker with bottles for red and white sauces that he/she can add on to your entree upon request. A tip for first-timers: - The red hot sauce is actually pretty f*ing hot. Wow! This place is awesome! It's even worth the drive from Decatur. It sometimes has long lines but they move really fast. The food is sooooo good! As a mostly veggie eater it always great to find a place with delicious vegetarian options. I usually get the falafel platter and Russell gets the gyro meat one. We can only eat half of the platters and take the rest home. Don't forget to add some white sauce and the hot sauce--super hot and tasty! They ask how many stripes of hot sauce you want. One is nice, two is spicy, three is my favorite--super-spicy, and four is NUCLEAR! I tried four stripes once and nearly died, but I ate it all. I was crying! Oh, I forgot to mention the fries! I'm originally from New York so I was used to halal carts being on every corner. Once I moved down to Georgia, I couldn't find any halal carts or food places at all! Until I came across the famous Halal Guys located in Atlanta. I was pleasantly surprised that this was the ONLY halal restaurant in Atlanta alone! The location is randomly placed in the corner of two busy intersections. The parking lot is fairly small as well. The food tastes just like the Halal Guys in NYC except the prices are a bit more than in NYC. Either way it was well worth the 30 minute trip! Updated Review: 4 months after going here, the quality and quantity went down. This is nowhere close to the Halal Guys in NY. I ordered a regular chicken platter. One of the workers filled up the lettuce and tomato on the plate, barely leaving any room for the rice and chicken. I told her to atleast add more rice and she wanted to charge me extra. I complained about it but she only said I should've said something earlier. I was ready to cancel the order and just leave. I won't be going back there anymore! read more

My first impression was the price. Sheesh. $8.99 for a regular and $7.99 for a small. The $1 is definitely worth it to get a regular. I'm very basic when it comes to food and I'm not a big fan of sauces either. I ordered the rice with beef and lettuce. I asked for the sauces on the side since I don't know what they taste like. The man ahead of my friends and I literally had his food swimming in the white sauce. The woman was putting a ton of meat on each bowl, the cashier told her to stop putting such large portions on each bowl when she was scooping food for us... sad day. My fiancé told me that beef is good, so I went with beef (I've had other friends actually tell me they enjoy the chicken much more). We also ordered fries. I would definitely share the fries with friends as it's a huge order. Overall, the food was nothing special. Just rice and beef with some vegetables. Oh, and the white sauce is a few hundred calories for just one packet! I was personally not a fan of the white or red sauce and continued to eat my food plain. Well I guess the newness has worn off. I really loved this place when it first opened, now they've let things go. Ladies working the counter obviously hate their job. They just stand there and stare at you instead of greeting you and asking what sauce you'd like and what extras you'd like. BTW, charging extra for olives is a bit cheap. Tables were dirty, building had that sewer smell the minute I opened the door. And on that note, the men/women combo bathroom was smelly and the soap dispenser cover was laying on the ground. Not even sure how a place like this stays in business. First off, the place was disgusting. Floor was stickier than any restaurant I've ever been in. I mean you could hear it loudly walking. $15 for a beef gyro platter, fries and a coke. At that price, it should be the best gourmet gyro ever. Instead, it was the worst gyro I ever got. Why am I so late to the party? This place is amazing. Upon entering we were greeted by the friendly staff who explained everything to us and recommended a few of their best sellers. My fiancé and I each got a platter and I opted for falafels as a side as he got fries. The portions were large but priced very fair. We ended up taking half our meals home to enjoy later. When we were eating, one of the staff members came out asking if we'd like additional sauce. Too much hype. I know I'm a bit late but my recent first experience was mediocre. The staff wasn't really friendly and had no energy. The vibe was all off. I think communication was a big issue. All I have been hearing from my friends is that I must try Halal Guys because the one in New York is that awesome! Well, I did today. It was wang awesome but it was pretty good. I give it a 3.5 stars and of course I always round up. First of all, I'm not really into this type of food because I think they're blend. However, the combo platter I got today was very flavorful and delicious. Parking is somewhat limited but there are lot of adjacent parkings nearby. Menu is simple enough, it's either the sandwich or the platter. I chose the combo platter (chicken and beef). Chicken looked pale but was seasoned well and beef, I thought was too crispy, bit crunchy like overcooked but flavorful. Other than beef and chicken, there was a big scoop of rice and shredded lettuce and chopped onions. Whole plate was pretty balanced. They are two sizes (small and regular), only $1 difference. Regular was $8 something and pretty generous portion. There were three people working at the counter. One person took your order and scoop the food, second person pour the sauces (white, hot, and BBQ), and third person took your money. You can ask for the sauces on the side. I recommend the white sauce, I don't know what's in it but it was yummy. Hot sauce was SPICY! so eat at your own risk. If you check in on Yelp and leave a comment, you get a free drink. Interior of the restaurant is pretty yellow and red. There are few tables with few more tables outside on the patio. Soft drinks and ice teas are self served and free refills. Late post! Backstory time: While in New York, my girlfriend and I walked 15 blocks from our hotel and visited their central location. Unfortunately the food did not live up to the hype and we were disappointed. Fast Forward 2 months and thanks to a UYE (unofficial yelp event) I was able to give the Halal Guys a second chance. Firstly, let me admit that I didn't know this place was in Georgia ( I know shame on me). To my surprise this place isn't a big food cart but an actual spacious restaurant. I liked the initial set up. Community tables and a cafeteria style line up. Definitely gives off the fast lunch vibes. The staff wasn't friendly. They rushed each guest through the line and tossed the food into the container. The manager was also rude and impatient with the new employee. Threw my experience off a bit. The food was better tasting. I'm not sure if that's because I was hungry or if it was actually good. Tip: get lots of white sauce and one pack of hot sauce will do. My pita bread was soft and warm. The beef was tender and the chicken was a bit dry. Overall, I enjoyed my experience but I doubt I would go out of my way to try it again read more

My son was in town and wanted to try something he couldn't get in Charlotte. I exposed him to the very limited, but delicious, menu offerings of The Halal guys. He had the large Chicken Platter and I had the large Felafel Platter. We were hungry and both were eaten fully. We shared a Baklava dessert. The white sauce made the platters, IMHO. This is not going to be a good review. This place looked interesting so I wanted to try it. I ordered the beef gyro platter and some baba ganoush, which was frozen and I threw it out. The rice was dry and crunchy. the "salad" was basically wilted lettuce. Although they are very proud of pushing their sauces, it's sweet mayonnaise, BBQ, and hot sauce. What's odd to me is how full the parking lot is and people keep coming in to eat this stuff. I don't like confrontation so I didn't ask for my money back, but I will never eat here again and I recommend that you do the same. The worst part about my whole experience is, from where I sat, I could see that the Food Terminal was right across the street, and I've been hearing rave reviews about that place. I consider this place a fast food place. The price is a bit high in comparison to other fast food joints, but not so much that it deters me from getting a to-go option here and there. I've only had the combo platter of chicken and lamb, and although it's slightly different from the NYC cart version, it's still tasty! The guys behind the counter will drizzle on your sauces for you - I recommend getting just the white sauce and asking for the hot (like HOT) sauce as a little dab on the side. When they first opened, they were stingy about the sauces and charged for packets, but they must have gotten the memo about how wack that was because now they have servers (if you dine-in) come around with bottles and offer you more if needed. I've also had their falafels as a side and it had been sitting around for about 15 minutes (was to-go) so it wasn't that great. Can't say if it was because of the wait or just not great in the first place. I'd skip that altogether unless you're able to eat right away. Parking is tight so you might have to wait it out. If it's late, perhaps you can park at a nearby business that is closed for the day but only if it's a quick to-go transaction. Dining seats are pretty limited so you might as well get it to go. He had been talking about it for awhile and how he goes on his lunch break pretty frequently. It's like a fast food Mediterranean place in my opinion. It was a pretty average crowd for lunch time but not super busy. I got the small beef gyro platter. I wasn't to hungry and the large platter looked a little to much for my stomach at the moment. The platter came with protein, rice, pita bread, tomato and lettuce. You can add bell peppers, kalamata olives and onions. I passed on everything tho; I wish I would have added the olives. (Guilty pleasure) Lastly, I added the white sauce and no bbq. That first bite was such a beautiful explosion in my mouth. A small platter was enough to fill my belly. Ummm NO. This is not mediterranean food.. at all - tasteless and very very oily. Poor quality ingredients. I got a gyro sandwich - disappointed there was no lamb - only options are chicken or beef. The beef has zero flavor and it was sunk in oil, so when I saw the grease dripping on my sandwich I was already terrified. Usually it should be shaved fresh from the rotisserie right on your sandwich. The pita bread was so thick and spongy textured... not a good quality pita at all! The white sauce has nothing to do with tzatziki sauce, it is more of a mayo or aioli. Yes, please add more grease to my sandwich, the beef with dripping oil was not enough. Just nothing was good on this sandwich it was quite gross... Service was not stellar either, there was no line, yet they didn't make my side of fries and I had to ask 3 times for it. Not going back .. I am already regretting I have used my time and appetite on Buford Hwy at this location :( read more

So I have visited this location in Atlanta about two or three times and now feel sufficiently qualified to give a fair review. There are good and bad things I can say about THG. The original in New york (multiple locations; food stand / vendor cart format) are / is better; however, this place is good too (but more expensive with less food quantity). The food tastes about the same consistency wise but I think here you get more lettuce, tomato and pita wedges. Sauce dispensation here is tightly controlled and monitored by the employees behind the counter in the assembly line. In NYC you can serve yourself the sauces; this can be a bad thing if you give yourself too much hot sauce. The hot sauce is really, really hot (as in habanero / ghost pepper hot).The sauce choices are white, red (super hot) and BBQ. The Good: Same (or at least very close) taste and consistency as you would find in the food truck stand in New York; same sauces too. I think you might get more pita bread points at this location (versus the food stand in NYC); however, the pita bread is not the focus. If you are craving Halal guys, you now have a local destination to hit up. Open late; if one (or two) of my nearby favorite late night cheap eats destinations is too crowded (Las Tortas Locas, La Pastorcita, to name names / for example), then I feel I have another good option to hit up with the addition of place. Unlike the NYC food stand you can add fresh onion, pickled jalapenos, or Kalamata (sans pit) olives (the two latter for an upcharge). The Bad: You get smaller portioning for more money. I think the Food stand format in new york gives you about 20-30% more food for less money. I think the price for a tin foil platter in NYC is about $8; here it is close to $10.Sauce dispensation here is tightly controlled and monitored by the employees behind the counter. Pita bread points should be toasted (however they are not toasted in NYC either). I was driving up Buford Highway, scouting places to eat instead of battling Friday rush hour with the broken interstate. I passed by Halal Guys and it was empty. OMG, it's already closed, I gasped? No, the combination of rush hour and bad weather had conspired to momentarily empty the dining room. I whipped in, determined to see what all the fuss was about and why it had achieved cult like status since taking over its corner on Buford Highway. First, they have honed the concept of a limited menu with laser precision. You can get a sandwich (pita wrap) or a platter. That's your choice. The platter comes with chopped iceberg lettuce, chopped tomatoes and orange rice and gives you a choice of chicken, beef gyro meat, a combination of the two or falafel. There are a few toppings you can add, like green pepper, chopped raw onions, Kalamata olives, but it's pretty basic. You can also order hummus, baba ghanouj, falafel and fries as sides. Second, the portion size of the platters is impressive and you should consider ordering the small platter. Otherwise plan on taking leftovers home. When it came to the food itself, I was underwhelmed. It tasted very bland, even with the inexplicable white sauce no one could explain. Both the chicken and the beef gyro meat were dry and just on this side of being overcooked. The fact the cook was chopping huge piles of meat into tiny pieces on the grill, and not in a fun Benihana kind of way, probably contributed. It sounded like a bad audition for a role in Stomp, a real cacophony. I was expecting a fresher, more home-made experience. The pita was store bought and the white sauce came in packets made in Canada. And what is white sauce anyway? No one could explain it other than to say it was a mayonnaise type sauce. Also, when I asked an employee what her favorite item was she told me she didn't eat the food. What? Shove some food in front of that girl or at least teach her to fake it. I haven't had the original Halal Guys in NYC, but I have fond memories of another cart before Halal Guys' fame. My husband and I waited a month or so after the grand opening to avoid the crowds. The small combo platter was plenty of food for me and the falafels were pretty good too. I think the magic is all in the sauces - both the white and spicy sauces. I can't believe some people want extra white sauce. My husband's gyro was ok - I've had better. Either way, I feel like this is a good place to go for lunch but it's not something I'd want for dinner. The most irresponsible and annoying employees at this location while taking orders from the customers. Irregular proportions of food in each order even though all the orders are just duplicates of the same. This place is NOT HALAL. I went in last week, and they would not give us a straight answer about where the meat comes from. They did not show the Zabiha Halal certification either. This place is overhyped and is lying to Muslim customers who are under the impression that they serve halal food.
