How can you not dig the gutter? Take everything that sucks about Brooklyn Bowl, and move it a few blocks away and boom - there ya go. Great dive bar up front, the bowling is fun and affordable (however there can be quite the wait if you come during peak hours) and I just leanred they have a show space in the back! I went to go see some of my friend's bands play and it was awesome. Never in my life have I ever been given a glass pint of beer at a music venue, and I wasn't bout to complain. $8 gets you a 'gannsit and a shot of whiskey. I only managed to visit The Gutter for a few minutes. It was the last stop on a long night of checking out bars in the area and we were getting a little tipsy. But i have to say that if you're in Brooklyn than you have to check it out. Well worth the walk into the desolate industrial area. Apparently an old factory was demolished and ten bowling lanes were imported from Cleavland and rebuilt. The 2nd room houses a well stocked bar that was also built from scratch. Reading some reviews on other sites, specifically NYC blogs etc there seems to be some complaints about wait times etc for bowling. But for a drink or a touristic stop , i'm sure you'll be rewarded. I love The Gutter! I typically stop by for the Comedians You Should Know event that takes places every Wednesday night at 9pm (seating starts at 8pm). The show is either cheap ($5-$10) or even free. And it's a good 2-hour show. The host, David Drake, is really funny and sets a great tone for all of the upcoming comedians. The drinks are affordably priced, with my only wish being that they offered more than one cider. The bowling is also a great price too at $7/game and $3/shoes. It's a pretty small bowling alley, but a cool place to hang out since they are open until 4am. read more

This place is a great spot to see special events and drink $7 beer. I had a really rough time with the bartender downstairs but I guess that's the case when you have The Kinks cover band blasting behind you. The men at the door were really nice and knew me enough to not care about my frequent cig breaks. It's an interesting place and at times it can smell like a gutter. The people that work here aren't friendly but it's a great shitty little place. The drinks are cheap, the bar area is actually very spacious & the bowling is fun. There are only a few lanes so we got a there at 930 on a Saturday and were very drunk by the time it was our turn 3 hours later. * they accept card for drinks but bowling is cash only * they charged per person per game or by the hour. Dope spot! Real low key vibe with reasonably priced drinks. What's real chill is that there's a old school bowling alley attached to the bar, like it's never been remodeled from the 80's. Lots of people were bowling when I was there. The workers were nice and helpful. No food is served here but they have $1 chips that you can get at the local bodega to munch on. Music was on point. The reviews about the staff are accurate. Horrible attitudes and bad service, especially the guy working the shoe swap. A bartender also lost my debit card at the bar that I used to open a tab. Barely gave any effort in an attempt to find it followed by a disingenuous half ass apology. Of course I was upset and started complaining but I wasn't making a scene or cursing, etc. but a bouncer still felt the need to ask me to leave. Seriously? We had a company event planned at The Gutter for close to a month. Our intention was to enjoy a night of bowling and order some pizza to the bowling alley. We came straight from work in the UWS with an Australian exchange student. Upon arriving, we all gave our IDs to the bouncer. He wouldn't accept the Australians ID cause it wasn't from the states and refused to let him in. He was beyond rude and refused to treat the situation maturely. We attempted to talk to him to try to explain the situation but he was just ignoring us. At one point, he said go to another bowling alley. The Gutter could care less about the customers business. The Gutter was what it was before Brooklyn Bowl ever came by to show it's face. Now it's not as fancy as Brooklyn Bowl and does not have their food or nice as lanes. However it is a classic Williamsburg spot, which is less of a hassle, a better vibe and easier on the wallet. The shows there are a great time. Definitely hit up the back for a performance. The people who work there are awesome. Managers, DJ's, bartenders, they're all excellent at their jobs. Love the setup of the place too. Plenty of space to relax with a large group or sit down. They have an awesome selection of beer on draft. I end up at Gutter A LOT for birthday parties. Not like the birthday parties when you were little that your mom planned with the plastic table cloth and your whole 4th grade gets invited and people all sign a bowling pin. Its really more like everyone has been drinking, eating and passing out birthday cupcakes at the beer hall around the corner [1] when inevitably someone comes over to Gutter to use their ATM and sees 'hipster bowling paradise.' They come back wide eyed and tells everyone tales of how great bowling is going to be as a crazy drunken group, and of course everyone agrees! Nine people who lack the attention span to bowl an entire frame themselves, meet $45 bucks for a lane for an hour. $5 bucks buys you and your friends a Gutter free for all. Practice your granny shot, see how heavy of a ball you can bowl, just never ever EVER attempt to bowl two balls at the same time. [2] But pretty much all else goes. Have a blast, feel like a kid again. Gutter is always packed Saturday afternoon and evenings with a mix of bowling enthusiasts and some local leagues. Pretty much everyone taking it much more seriously than you are. Its a small and old bowling alley sans a claw machine and neon orange nacho cheese. I like that the food area is a divey brooklyn bar. I primarily just come to the gutter for shows, not bowling. Bowling sounded like fun for a 'first date', except we didn't bowl.... The damn line was bananas for a Tuesday night. We tried to wait it out, but I eventually got really impatient. I will say this, that game machine kept us entertained for half an hour. I now know how to play machine games that do not benefit my life in any way. 5$ out the door, JUST-LIKE-THAT. Damn, you amazing money eating machine. Now this is my kind of bowling alley! To each is own, but I view bowling as a great method of doing something fun outside the norm with a few great friends. I'm far from the type of person that brings their own engraved ball and custom shoes along for the ride (far from it, really), so I can really appreciate an operation like The Gutter. It's gritty, rough around the edges, and just darn near perfect. If you've ever been to Portland, Oregon, it's like the Magic Garden -- farr more of a dive bar than what it moonlights as on the daily. Sure there are six lanes to get your swerve on, but it's a great watering hole first and foremost. Oh - and they have so many bathrooms! Oh my good grief, I must have died and gone to heaven... The boyfriend and I were like kids in a candy store when we found this spot, right around the corner from our neighborhood favorite Berry Park! Cheap bowling, trivia nights, concrete floors and wooden tables, beer, beer, and more beer, a pool table, and an old school table hockey game. They have a bowling league, made up of some of the grungiest, coolest bowlers I've seen in a long time. I felt like I stepped into some alternative familiar world on those lanes, beer in hand, snuggled up with the boyfriend, that reaked of nostalgia from my hometown cool of Austin, Texas mixed with a little bit of cool from "The Big Lebowski." It was just cool, is what I'm trying to say here, and I want to be there, again, soon, getting trashed and playing games with good friends, again, soon. read more

Overall, The Gutter has a lot going for it: The beer is varied, chosen nicely, and isn't too expensive. The vibe of the place is easygoing and laid back, like you've just stumbled into the bowling alley where your mom used to dump you into daycare while she bowled in a weekday ladies-only league back in the 70s/80s. The domed hockey game was a blast, fully bringing me back to my childhood spent at the local arcade. Sure, the lanes are rundown and the waits are long. And yes, the selection of balls isn't top notch; you'll find plenty with holes way too small, and lots more that are chipped and/or cracked. And, of course, the scoring machines are relics. But none of that matters. Frankly, if you're a serious bowler, someone who wants a true, legitimate "bowling experience," you shouldn't be going to The Gutter. Go to Chelsea Piers or another AMF-sanctioned alley if that's what you're looking for. My biggest gripe, and the one that absolutely knocked 2 stars off my review, was the staff. I get it, it's Williamsburg and your job (and general goal in life) is to act crabby towards anyone you deem not-cool-enough for you, and I expect such attitude when I hang out in WB. But when my friends and I ask, nicely, if we can pay to extend our hour by just a few minutes since we're very nearly done with our game (where I've just somehow, magically and mysteriously, managed to bowl 2 strikes in a row), don't answer with a gruff "no, I've got people waiting," and lean over to flip a switch, wiping out our game/scores. Thanks for that. Really. Of course, I should take my own advice, and not take bowling seriously (in general, but more specifically at The Gutter). What a sick idea. Turn a what looks like an old abandoned warehouse into a pretty chill place to hang out. The beer selection is ridiculous, I love getting a pitcher of something new every round. Also, while you wait 437893 hours for a lane to bowl, a game of pool and an old school hockey game that I used to play in Canada when I was twelve will keep you occupied. The music is of course what keeps me happy and that too was a great last touch to this place playing all Indie. I was totally into the old school decor with only little lamps and Christmas lights keeping this place lit. The "bowling alley" was REALLY old school that was probably from the late 70's early 80's. The blonde girl that was exchanging shoes had a terrible attitude and did everything with a sneer. The shoe area wasn't even busy. The music was decent, the booths were large, the bathrooms beyond clean for a dive bar, and there is an outdoor area for cancer lovers to get their fill. 4. Continue to be generous. When I walked outside to annoyingly bum a cigarette, both guys, automatically reached into their pocket for their pack. Screw people who say New Yorkers aren't friendly. 5. I almost drove by this place twice. Totally non-descript, hole in the wall of an entrance. If you drove by the entrance to this place (an old abandoned warehouse) and you sneezed you might drive right by and totally miss it. Once you enter the place it is actually pretty cool looking on the inside. They have bowling lanes but I didn't bowl that night but it looked okay although Lainy C. mentioned that the scoring was manual as the scoring machine was busted. The way the bathrooms are set up is quite unique. I came here for a Yelp Elite Brooklyn event. I ordered a Tanqueray gin and tonic for $7. Boy was the bartender generous with the Tanqueray gin. Whew! All in all not a bad place to hang out. The surrounding area though is still questionable when it gets dark out. Probably a good place for private parties, like year-end office parties. read more

How fun - a retro bowling alley in my neighborhood! The Gutter is a new place brought to the border of Greenpoint and Williamsburg by the folks who own Barcade. There is a nice large bar, which is separate from the 8 lanes for bowling. The bar consists of plenty of seating - both tables, bar stools, and booths, and the drink selection is good. There are quite a few interesting microbrews to choose from. For your gustatory pleasure they offer a few bar snacks - mostly just potato chips and beef jerky, as at Barcade. If you don't want to have a long wait to bowl, go during happy hour on a weeknight. Otherwise, I hear the wait could be a couple hours for a lane. Bowling here is not cheap, but it certainly is fun. It's either $6 or $7 per person per game, plus $2 shoe rental per person. Basically, two games for me and 3 friends cost $56 including the shoes. Not really an everyday activity, but definitely worth it now and then. The lanes are old and our balls got stuck twice (lane seven!), meaning we had to run out to the bar to ask the bowling cashier guy for some help because hitting the reset button wasn't working. Despite these minor glitches we had a great time and I will definitely return! On a weeknight! read more

They do not accept NYC ID, which is commonly used in town. The employee distributing shoes refused to answer my question or proceed to help me until I paid the fee of $57, I had $60 in my hand that was visibly on the counter. While bowling our game, the balls never came back up and a staff member came out and scolded us and was extremely rude. There was a long pause in the game due to her shutting down the lane to get the balls back in order. Nice bar and decent space, but extremely unprofessional staff. read more

Do I have to give this place a star??? Do NOT come here if you are expecting to bowl. The lanes and balls are the worst. Apparently you get what you pay for. Cheapest bowling in Brooklyn. The lane would reset randomly ruining our frames. The balls were covered in divots and did people from the 70s have smaller fingers, I am a small girl and my fingers barely fit. We paid for an hour but half of that time was spent resetting the lane. Not to mention it is at a bar in Williamsburg... Drunk hipsters walking around everywhere. And on the eighth day, God said "Let there be Balls". Or something to that effect, because I'm sure he was referring to The Gutter when he said it. The very first Brooklyn Yelp Elite Event was held here, and I must say it was my best virgin excursion since high school (I have no idea what that means either but damn it it's funny). I honestly cannot tell you how much the rates are, since the games and bowling shoes were paid for. But the drinks weren't too expensive at all, around $5.00 each or something. And come on, you cannot bowl without drinking beer. It's like Jeff Lebowski bowling without a White Russian - it just does not happen. The lanes are much thinner than your average bowling alley lane. I admit that I had trouble adjusting at first, because I usually start the ball off on the right of the lane and curve it towards the middle. The thinner lanes made it harder for me to curve it, thus the ball would end up more towards the left side of the pins instead of right down the middle. And I couldn't do my Al Bundy "strrrrrrrrike" victory call because of it. And, oh man, are the scoring machines antiquated. But that is what gives it its charm. Sort of like bowling in the 1970's. If you go on the weekends, be prepared to wait a long while for a lane. I suggest coming on a Monday or a Tuesday, when the crowds are smaller. read more

The mystery of bowling is, either your game improves the more drunk you get, or your game gets waaaaaaaaay (as in my case) worse. So, which one are you? This is the greatest place in the world to explore this mysterious question. Love this place!!!! The geniuses behind Barcade thought this one up. They brought this cool vintage bowling alley, which was dismantled in Minnesota, and reinstalled it in this Williamsburg warehouse space, with all it's original quirks and heavily pitted balls and pins and scuffed up rental shoes. Add a dark vintagey decor, a pool table, some local microbrews, a diverse beer (and cider) selection, decently priced pitchers and pints, and you have one great local hangout. The only thing that is missing is real food (they sell limited snacks) but they do allow pizza delivery :-) Yes, the lanes don't work perfectly and they miss score counts once in a while, and yes, the lanes are not official Amf tournament length, yada, yada, yada. But were you really coming here for serious bowling? I didn't think so. I've been here on a few off nights so never experienced the weekend crowd, but I'd suggest calling first to make sure you don't encounter a birthday party block-out or something, and to anticipate how long your wait will be. read more

Beer and bowling. Fantastic. I'm wavering between a 3 and 4 star but overall it was a cool place. You bowl by the hour so it's possible to squeeze in more than a game but you might get shut down midway through your second so that's kind of annoying. Decent beer selection with Keegan Mother's Milk Stout on tap (made me a happy camper). I freakin hate trivia but they do trivia here so I guess that's a plus for some people. I came here on Sunday afternoon with some girlfriends and we had a BLAST!!! First off, the bowling games here are much cheaper than in Manhattan (although the equipment here is pretty old and no frills - this is more for a fun time with friends, not serious bowling). Next, the shoes seem clean and pretty new, which was nice. I also saw them spraying disinfectant on them - whew! We ordered a pitcher of beer (the Pumpkin Ale, which I found delicious - it was malty with a hint of pumpkin spice) - it was Happy Hour (which I was extra happy to know that they have on Sunday) so our pitcher was only $18 and it was plenty of beer for us four gals. The restrooms entail large, private stalls which are decently clean for a dive bar. The main bar area is pretty big and sometimes has DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. Bottom Line: A great place to have fun on a low budget - highly recommended! Also, a cute idea for a birthday party :) Avoid if you are a hipster hater - it feels like a parallel hipster universe inside. Note: Cash only for bowling, but the bar takes cards :) read more

"Would you prefer bowling with hipsters or without hipsters?" I texted my date before we made our bowling plans. Fortunately, we went for the connvenience and the "irony" of "The Gutter", and not longer subway rides out to Sunset Park or Coney island. Like most people, I have mixed feelings about hispters but I like their hangouts when they have, as they often do, that nice combination of retroness and coziness. The Gutter has all of that and bowling. All it's missing is good bar food, and it should get with the program. The really comfortable naugahyde backed barstools (okay, I don't know if they're really naugahyde, but I love that word) are great to sit in, and they have a good mix of beers, including some upstate ones, not just the omnipresent Brooklyn stuff. There is also a nice retro decor, and by nice I mean not that "ironic", and not self-consciously crappy. i LOVED the Indianapolis Motor Speedway postcards, not that you probably care. It does take a long while to get a lane on a Saturday night, and unfortunately you have to pick the number of games you're playing in advance so put some thought in that. We should've said three apiece, so we left wanting more bowling and I left wanting a return trip sometime soon. read more

Bowling! Finally! North Brooklyn welcomes bowling into the loving arms of Greenpoint/Williamsburg on N 14th St. The owners of this bar have hit a conceptual jackpot = hipster bar + retro bowling alley + a location that is just off the overly trendy-trodden path of Bedford Avenue. The bar area is large, spacious, yet still dark and fairly cool-seedy feeling. Booths along the wall have vintage-framed windows that look out onto the bowling alley portion of the bar. The bowling alley itself is a kind of a nostalgic still-life, or sort of time capsule, evoking the best of 1970s Americana bowling alleys. Forget fancy t.v. screens flashing gigantic X's with the bowler's name when someone gets a strike, we're talking those sort of hunkers, those Mathew Broderick-War-Games-MS-DOS looking consoles. Why they are still smoothing out the wrinkles of installing a trendy bowling alley from scratch, the owners are very apologetic, patient, and willing to work with you if something goes wrong. Our lane and computer got confused after our first game and began resetting itself after every roll, effectively preventing us from completing any bowler's turn. The guy who was the manager, presumably, was super cool--apologizing and even tacking on an extra 20 minutes to our $56 hour. Which brings me to my one beef with the place--it's seemed pretty expensive. For one hour, five bowlers, five pairs of shoes, and one pair of socks, it was $78, which didn't include the three pitchers of beer we bought. If you bowl and drink, expect to pay around $30, especially if you are in a group of four or more people. I think the prices are broken down thusly: $4 shoe rental, $2 for a pair of socks. If you have four or more bowlers it is $48 per hour during the week, $56 Friday-Sunday. If you are fewer than four bowlers, you pay $6 per person per game during the week, and $7 Friday-Sunday. One of the charms of the Gutter so far is that it has not yet been conquered by the colonialists of cool. While we were there, it didn't seem to matter too much where the bowling alley was located, those who were looking to bowl, made their way from the other boroughs to the hip, industrial side street. In other words, the trend-setting environment didn't seem to deter the acid-wash-clad, bleach-tipped, 200 lb. male douche bag in the lane next to us from obliviously hoarding the only 8 lb ball during his every turn bowling, causing the girls in our lane to have to wait for him to finish. Again, it's part of the charm. All in all, I'm psyched to have bowling so close to home. I will definitely return to the Gutter, but I'll probably bowl during the week, so that the prices are somehow slightly more justifiable. read more

Super cool bar/music venue/bowling alley all rolled into one. I came here to see a friend's band play (theyre called Dalton, look 'em up!). When you walk in, you're in the main bar area, you've got tables, a pool table, foosball, beer and booze. I drank a $5 blonde all night and was very happy. To the right in a separate, raised room is the bowling alley. Whats cool is the lanes are almost at eye level of the bar so you've got a great view of the games going on. Check the website for pricing, I didn't play but a friend has and said its a blast. Gets super crowded on the weekends. The music venue is a little weird, you literally walk through the bathroom to get to it. There's a hallway with sinks and mirrors on the right and the bathroom stalls on the left. At least you don't have to go very far. That night there was a $5 cover for the three bands playing. Luckily, there's a second small bar here so you don't have to make the trek back to the other bar for more drinks. The volume for my friends band was great but the second band was so painfully loud that we actually left because of it. Definitely not your typical bowling alley. The lanes were purchased from somewhere going out of business and reinstalled here. Meaning every lane has its "quarks". So, The Gutter is clearly trying to seem like a dive, but it's not. Sure, they have cheap beer and dim lighting, but this bowling alley-cum-bar is far from the seedy holes that sell Jim by the glass and have putrid bathrooms. In fact, their bathrooms are quite nice and cute in a simple way. The bartender, no matter how imposing he may look, it a total sweet pea. He also mixes a wicked good Dark 'n' Stormy that this New Englander will gladly vouch for. By far, the drinks and bar service are the best thing about The Gutter. Now, on to the bowling. Lots of balls, lots of lanes. Just be warned: if you're hesitant to commit for anything but an hour, they'll skewer you. "We might decide to go another hour," my colleague said on a Monday night. Well, apparently they won't allow you to 'extend' -- you've got to commit up front, which is kind of a drag, especially if your part of a largeish group. And the trivia? It's fun, albeit wicked fucking hard. And the chick who runs it has a voice that makes me want to destroy my eardrums, among other things. I hope she learns to annunciate someday. So, The Gutter is a fun juice joint for an evening, but their skanky bowling shoes and unappealing clientele might keep me away in the future. That bartender, however... As far as a bar it's great. Love the bar hang. However the bowling there is trash. The lanes are not properly greased. If you put any spin on the ball at all it just shoots to the gutter. If the lanes were properly greased I'd spend all my money here bowling several times a week. Bummer. read more

A dingy, obnoxious, hipster, unkempt mess. The bowling balls are heavy as shit and look like they have been shot with a bb gun. The pool table is old as hell and a piece of crap. Def. not my type of crowd - or lack there of. Won't be back. read more
