I was singing my all the R&B jams! Now for the most important part... the food!!!!! Listen, those FRIED BISCUITS WITH APPLE BUTTER!!! LORD JESUS!!! 10/10. We also ordered the fried fish and wings (crispy & fresh), Mac and cheese (creamy) greens (seasoned and just the right bite), and candied yams (just the right sweetness). I recently saw a news article about a The Grub House serving some of their popular dishes at Gainbridge Fieldhouse where the Pacers play. Recently found out that their restaurant was not far in the area where I worked. Today I decided to order lunch from here. I got a chicken Philly that was loaded with lettuce, tomato, bell pepper, mayo, and jalapeños with the side of half fries half fried okra. When I got there, a lady who introduced herself as the owner greeting me and ask me if she could help. That's all her that I had a call in order after I paid. She gave me my order and I went back to work. The food was steaming hot! I immediately went for the fries that were cooked to perfection and the okra was just as good. My chicken philly was good. I loved the bread they used. The chicken well seasoned. I have been trying to cut back on salt at home so the seasoning kind of kicked my taste buds lol but that did not diminish the chance of me finishing my Philly. We stopped at this neighborhood joint for lunch on a very hot summer day while we were in Indianapolis for a wedding. The air conditioning was very welcome and the interior was clean. The vibes are very, very hole-in-the-wall. But the reviews were good and the prices were cheaper than other restaurants in the vicinity so we tried out 2 offerings from their sandwich section, and hoped we could at least try to make healthy choices... Spoiler alert - our attempts at healthy failed. I ordered a crispy pork tenderloin sandwich with a side of fries while my boyfriend ordered a catfish po'boy with a side of fried okra and a grub drink (Kool aid). They were out of yams, my original plan for a side, so I impulsively got fries. They were basic so I should have chosen a different side, something more authentically soul. Or healthy!!! Lol whoops! Our wait was about 10 minutes so we chatted and thought about tagging them on social media to get a free side of fried biscuits, but decided against it for the sake of our health! (Looking back, we should have done this anyway). We grabbed our food from the counter and ate at a table inside. About 5 or 6 people came in and out to pick up to-go orders. No one else dined in. But we can see why this is a popular carryout spot! The food was sooooo good! Normally, I'd scoff at a slice of Kraft cheese on top of anything, but it was yummy on top of my MASSIVE portion of crispy pork tenderloin. The honey sauce was so good and I'm glad they forgot to put it on the side, like I originally asked. It added a sweetness to this fried sandwich I really enjoyed. My boyfriend was happy with his side of fried okra and hasn't met a fried catfish po' boy he hasn't liked. He didn't finish his kool aid but they gave him a lot so that's just fine. I am not local to Indy, so I don't know when I'll be back next, but I'd happily give my recommendation to anyone looking for a hearty, soul food meal in northern Indianapolis! 2 stars. Disappointing. I patronized the food truck and was very disappointed by the quality of the Mac n cheese. I asked if it was a southern-style baked Mac n cheese or something more akin to a kraft stir-it-up-type and was told it's "baked and seasoned like what you would have at thanksgiving". Sounds good, doesn't it? (The lady cooking responded with less kindness and a bit of annoyance by saying, "it's Mac n cheese...ion know what else to tell you. I should've taken that as the correct answer! My fault.) Well, the noodles were mushy. Overcooked. Like, feed a baby mushy. And the flavor was giving microwave Kraft or velveeta type stuff. No cows or chickens were harmed in the making of this side dish because no real cheese nor any egg was used. Not inedible, but def not delicious. I chose to not to waste calories on food I didn't enjoy. So, I stopped after three bites. Not worth the $5. Wouldn't recommend unless you fancy a nice bowl of microwave Mac n cheese. I've been eating Grub house for about 2 years and when I say they NEVER disappoint, they never do.. I've had their catfish, pork chops, tacos, loaded potatoes and their breakfast and everything is seasoned well, fresh & even there grub punch and sweet tea is a 10!!! Stopped by on recommendation from a friend and will definitely be back sooner than later. The owners were there and fixing the food and they were so kind and attentive to us. The took our order and brought it to our table piping hot. The catfish was true southern style and exactly what we were looking for. The sides were all delicious too and it's clearly they are homemade and fresh. The owner was kind enough to bring some of the cinnamon treats over to our table just to be kind. I was very excited to visit this place and they did not disappoint. They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner and they also do catering. There is free parking in front of the restaurant and there is a free lot to park around the corner. It is a very cool and hip place with a nice vinyl mural covering the dining area wall. The dining area is a decent sized but does not have any tables. There is only bar seating and stools. They have nice smooth R&B music playing throughout the dining area. I fit the vibe. The woman working was very friendly and welcoming. I felt like I knew her. They offer some delicious food that includes breakfast sandwiches, chicken and waffles, salmon, catfish, wings, shrimp. and burgers. I ordered a catfish poboy with a side of onion rings and peach cobbler, and it took about 15 minutes for me to get my food. It was absolutely delicious. Very flavorful. The catfish was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right. I took the cobbler home and ate it later. I heated up in the microwave for a minute and a half, per the restaurant's recommendation and It was darn good. Also, I highly recommend their punch to drink. It was some of the best Kool-Aid that I have had. If you have not been here yet, I highly recommend checking this place out. This was my first time trying The Grub house. I saw them featured on an influencers channel. I had a taste for a loaded potato. I ordered from DoorDash. The order arrived and initially looked good. I took a couple bites out of the potato and was immediately disgusted when I found a black hair resembling pubic hair in my potato. I reported this to DoorDash but couldn't to the restaurant as they already closed for the day. I now sit here a few hours later with what feels like food poisoning nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach. This place does not adhere to sanitation requirements of the culinary industry. Every time I come there, the staff preparing the food are not wearing gloves, long nails, hair uncovered, And the cashier is also handling food while taking money and not once have I observed them coming near a sink to wash their hands. They are on the phone touching everything then coming back and touch the food. Their hygiene practices are horrible. This is not your home but a restaurant. This is my favorite spot for fried fish and home cooked/ southern pancakes. The pancakes are big buttery and crispy on the edges. If you love home cooked crispy edge pancakes you'll love these! First off, it's important to note that despite reports to the otherwise The Grub House is, in fact, open. I've always been curious about this restaurant at 20th and College. It looks like a comfort food joint. It's in a rather non-descript, somewhat divey building but I tend to love just this type of restaurant. My experience, however, is with delivery as I decided to take a day off work and ended up using a delivery gift card a friend had provided. I checked out my options and was delighted to see The Grub House as one of them. It does appear from social media that The Grub House went through a period of inactivity, however, I'm excited to report that it's back in action and the food itself was comfort food extraordinaire. I ordered a Grub Burger combo with a Sweet Tea. I was delighted that the burgers are made to order and I was even more delighted when my burger arrived medium well as I had ordered. The burger was a decent size burger and it was awesomely prepared. I also ordered Grub Fries. These fries were absolutely delightful. They're uniquely made and perfectly seasoned. It's not the easiest thing in the world to prepare food for delivery, however, I was pleased that my food was still warm when it arrived at my south Lawrence home. The sweet tea definitely hit the spot, as well. I definitely don't know the full scoop behind The Grub House, but I do know that's where I had an absolutely delightful lunch today and I won't hesitate to order from them or drop by their College Avenue location again.
