If you know me, you know I lean toward being a kinder/gentler reviewer. As of late, I've occasionally found myself looking back at a review and pondering "What was I thinking?" Case in point. California Burger. I don't like this place. I just don't. I don't get the popularity. I don't think about it. I don't crave it. I just don't. This was the second location in Indy after the wildly popular Speedway spot became famous for having lines wrapped around it and waits of up to a couple hours. This spot has waits, though nothing near two hours. For the most part, the furor has died down. This is located in a former Long John Silver's. While there is a dining room, this is a drive-thru. Both times I arrived, I had about 3-4 cars ahead of me. The menu is consistent with Speedway - a bunch of burger options, chicken sandwiches, a few other sandwiches, salads, fries, and a variety of ice cream options. The employees were friendly. I ordered a #1 combo - a burger with cheese, medium fries, medium drink. They don't have an iced tea option. I went with diet pepsi. The burger arrived as ordered. I ordered my burger plain other than the cheese - it arrived as I ordered it. The burger? Very much a medium burger. To be honest, I found it mediocre at best. The fries were good. However, there was so much salt I expected to look around the corner and see Pepa. There's not a lot of burger options around here anymore unless you want to go inside Denny's or the mall. You could hit White Castle down the street or McDonald's. The Wendy's is closed. The Burger King is closed. Heck, even the Applebee's is closed. I guess it wasn't fancy enough. I tried to look inside - they do have tables and chairs so I assume at some point they'll open up the dining room. It looks like a comfortable but simple decor. In the end, I'm not sure why I gave this 4 stars originally. I accept that some like it, but I simply don't. I despise the lack of an iced tea option. I found the burger disappointing. The fries were the best item and I just found them way overly salted. However, I would eat them again. The only truly good meal I've had here was a chicken sandwich. That's weird for a California Burger. Thus, I'm leaning less warm and fuzzy. I'm dropping this a star and acknowledging this is probably my final visit here. While there's not a lot of great burger options, both City Barbecue and Arby's are better for me and there's a Raising Cane's soon to open down the street. read more

I have been to this location multiple times and each time I'm very satisfied. Customer service is great. They make everything fresh to order. Even if they have a long line the line moves quickly. I love their turkey burgers, jalapeño poppers, and shakes. Those items are delicious and I have yet to be disappointed with them. This is a drive thru only restaurant. Every time I pass by this restaurant it's always busy!! I decided to try it a couple weekends ago and it was so good. I got the single bacon burger meal with large fries and a drink. Let me start by saying that a large size of fries would feed me for two days but it was great. It was a lot of food for a decent price. The burger itself wasn't dry and they add their signature secret sauce which tasted pretty good. The mac and cheese bites were probably my favorite because it was so nostalgic. Sometimes when food items are fried they can lose the original flavor and just taste like fried, but these tasted like kraft mac and cheese which was incredible. read more

Wow! This is a very good burger spot that I've passed for years and am now sad I've never eaten at it. I got the #16 combo with curly fries and it was incredible! Now it's a tad on the pricy side with a couple dips added it came to 16$ but it was worth it! I really love this place!! I like how it gives me retro vibes with their no frills menu but has plenty of options still. Everything I have gotten from here has been great. I usually get a lattice wrap but recently tried the California melt that comes on sourdough. So good! I also either get cheese fries or fried mushrooms. Went for lunch & was very surprised to see that its drive through only? Not sure if it's always been like that but although I was fine with it, it's still inconvenient for anyone who may be on a lunch break and has to eat in their car or take it elsewhere to eat. However the food was very good! I had the double cheeseburger with fries and OMG the fries may have been my favorite part of the whole thing! Perfectly seasoned with some seasoning salt and fluffy. I did spent a little time in the drive thru waiting on my food but that's what you'd expect from a place like this who makes your food to order. My family likes their burgers, but I absolutely love their grilled chicken sandwich - sounds boring but it's delicious. They also have great ranch dressing (important) and the fries stay crisp and yummy until the food gets home. read more

As far as fast food burgers go, this is the best in the city IMO. The burgers are fresh and the way it just melts in your mouth. The appetizers are of the fried variety but have unique options like zucchini, okra, curly fries, regular fries. All are very good and well fried. California Burger is pretty too notch. Their premium burgers are delicious and their curly fries are to die for. They're drive through only, so u usually take the food over to the mall food court to eat it. And that also means there's no real service. This is a solid little spot to grab a burger. They have a drive thru and the inside dining is not open. I ordered a single burger, with a side of fries. They use a "special sauce" which I loved, and the burger was hot and fresh! The fries were also very well seasoned and nice, hot and crispy. We heard that California Burger was similar to In-N-Out so we've been eager to try it since they opened a few years ago! It is drive thru only and you can't go inside the building as a customer. The drive thru line can get long and the wait wasn't too bad, but I wouldn't call it quick either. We both got burgers and fries. The burgers were delicious and definitely better than most fast food burgers. The toppings were fresh but I ordered mine with tomatoes and got one small tomato slice that covered maybe a quarter of the burger, so that was disappointing (I love tomatoes on my burgers!) I like that they give you ketchup without asking, and they give you small containers instead of packets. We always order our burgers without cheese and they didn't put any cheese, which was appreciated as many fast food places will overlook that request. The fries were crinkle cut, crispy and delicious. I've been thinking about who has the best burger in the Indy area. For fun, I sampled burgers at 6 of the top burger places in town today. California Burger was the best. The fries are good too. It takes a while for them to cook the burgers, but they're great! Sometimes the line gets long because of the cook times. California Burger is drive-thru only, which is annoying. A work colleague mentioned how good the cheeseburgers were at this place, so I had to go. We both commented on how it looks from the outside. It sits in the front lot of Castleton Mall right by the Panda Express. When driving by it either looks vacant or has cars wrapped around the building. Little did I know that it's drive through only. You see the doors blocked with chairs as you go through. My friend was right. For a drive through burger joint and the price, these compare to Bru and Five Guys. I would say for the price, they're better than both of the latter. What impressed me more than the tastiness of the burgers, were the cheese fries. When I want cheese fries, I want the fake orange cheese and tons of it. I want as much cheese as there are fries and am normally always disappointed that the tops of the fries are coated and the rest are dry underneath. These cheese fries were drenched in lovely orange cheese all the way to the bottom of the container! For that alone this place gets 5 stars from me. I hope it wasn't a fluke. I was looking for something near by and quick so I stopped here - the inside is closed so they only do drive-thru. The line was pretty busy, which is always a sign of good food. First time here after hearing so much hype about it. Burgers are big and you can tell they were fresh made. Fries are basic -you can find better, but if you need some they'll do. I will say the cheese fries though are loaded! Every fry was covered and the box seemed to weigh a ton. Definitely worth the money if you like cheese fries. Also had the banana shake, which was good, but I'm not sure the banana came through. Kind of pricey which I did not expect. California burger is so underrated!! For starters, when everything else is closed they stay open! Since the indoor part is closed, drive through is the option. Blessedly, the drive-thru line at this California Burger in Castleton is magnitudes shorter than the one in Speedway. At the location in Speedway, I waited in line around six hours; at this location in Castleton, I waited maybe 15 minutes start to finish. So much better! It's a night and day difference. I think part of the reason is because the menu seems more pared down here. There are fewer extraneous items, and just the main things (burgers, fries, salads, shakes) are available. Fewer things on the menu means that they can concentrate on making the things they offer really well. And the things they do have are excellent. I love the taste of their burgers -- the hamburger patties and buns remind me of those greasy-spoon burger joints in California like Yellow Basket and whatnot, the kind that make char-broiled burgers and hot, salty fries. So this restaurant lives up to its name: it really does taste like a California burger. I got their curly fries also, and they are some of the best curly fries around Indy. This is the curly fry place. They are currently only doing drive-thru orders only right now. I'm not sure if they have plans to open their dining room. read more

I left my house this evening hoping to go to my fave taco place to only realize they're closed so I opted to try out California Burger for the first time. I have to say, I was not disappointed. When I pulled up, it was kind of hard to hear the person taking my order. I don't think he could hear me very well either but we figured it out. Everything was surprisingly really good. The mozzarella sticks were golden and cheesy. The nuggets were like OG fresh McDonald's nuggets. To top it off, they had sweet baby rays bbq sauce. 4 stars because although they were on par with other fast food places in terms of price, they were a little slow. I had heard of the popularity if the west side location and anticipated the opening of this Castleton location. Rumor has it this is a lot like In N Out. So, I was exited to try it. The inside is not open, so it is drive thru only. Ordered a mushroom Swiss burger with curly fries and a chocolate shake. There were up charges for the curly fries and the shake. Also, for a California knockout burger with fries. Customer service throughout our transaction was great. My regular fries were not crispy when I got home, so it was necessary to freshen them up in the air fryer. The curly fries are your typical seasoned curly. The knockout burger was a bit much. It has a lot of stuff on it. Had the menu offered a description I might not have gotten it, but the drive thru only has pictures. The bacon on the burger was a bit undercooked and stringy. The rest of it was good. The mushroom Swiss burger was much better. Not as mess and had a good flavor. I wouldn't say this is the same as In n Out, but it's a solid fast food burger joint. I wanted to love this place and expected it to be similar to an In-N-Out Burger experience, but it was just another overpriced burger spot for over $15. All I got was a basic burger with mushrooms and avocado on it and overly salty fries and a side of cheese sauce,.
