I was on my way home and decided to stop at big Dan's for a late dinner. I was a little shocked that there was no one in the restaurant when I got there. I ordered from a very kind young man and my food was ready soon there after. The ingredients were fresh and the burger was hot and juicy. The fries were well seasoned and very crispy. I didn't stay to eat rather drove home, but the restaurant was clean and in good repair. This is such a better option than any other fast food hamburger joint. read more

In a great location for those that work / live in the eastside food deserts. Pulled up after normal lunch hours... ordered god a large whopper like burger ..... for me through the workday. A quality, quick service classic cafe smash burger. I expected more flavor, greasy goodness.... it was tasty but not that pure unhealthy amazing feel from cafes when I was a kid. Still good. It had been a few years since I made it here, or to any of the other ones that have come & gone. I made it a point to go here a couple of weeks ago for lunch. I was rather put off by the huge "No guns or knives" sign, as I walked up to the door. I went in anyway (still carrying my guns & knives!). Low and behold, there was another equally big sign at the counter! Also, it looked as though it was only take out, too. Anyway, I did not order anything. This place is just about the burger. There is no dine in. You order through glass, similar to a toll booth. Defiantly not Michelin star, but a great burger and fries. The guy in front of me got the "Big Hoss" a sausage sandwich. That looked really good. Next time I will get that. read more

We came to Indy from Columbus today and stopped by Big Dan's. To say the food was absolutely amazing is an understatement! The burgers have such an amazing flavor, not too big nor too small, and grilled perfectly. I have a picky toddler who absolutely loved the chicken tenders and our older son also loved the food. All in all we were really impressed with this place and if we come to the area again, we will definitely be coming back. read more

I've been driving past this place on my way to work and have always been curious as to how it would be and what they served. I know burgers, but only burgers? Never the less last night I decided to stop in here for dinner to see what it was all about. You walk in and order from some folks behind glass and are given a receipt then they call out your number and you can take it to go or sit in and eat. I decided to stay and enjoy some hot food, this location isn't massive but it's very clean with some posters from when big dans opened in 1950. I ordered the big dan burger with everything, and it was very tasty! I love adventurous food but sometimes it's good to get back to the classics. That's what big dans is just a classic smash burger with all the fixings if you want. I also had tasty French fries, and I was given a sample of a good wedge fry. Very friendly staff! AWESOME OLD SCHOOL EXPERIENCE... This place has tons of character, aka it is old. The grill itself must have decades of flavor, the counters and walls are also saturated in grease. You come in here and feel like you're in what Johnny Rockets pretends to be. This place is awesome. The burgers are delicious, comparable to Freddy's / Steak and Shake, and somehow even cheaper! I think it is great at being a cheap, good, fast burger in an authentically nostalgic burger joint. Came here with a friend completely on a whim. You could smell the grilled onions and burgers from the parking lot, which was a good sign! They have a very simple menu, burgers (single, 2X or 3X) chili dogs, fries, and tenders. The food is the kind you seek after a long night partying, maybe if it's the only thing open, certainly nothing to crave regularly. Aside from decent food, unfortunately they are understaffed, and unprofessional. I won't blame the people working, they were nice enough but you can tell there obviously is a lack of supervision and guidance. While I was there the employees were complaining about having to work, complaining about the growing crowd in the lobby ( which is a good thing because it's what's gonna keep them in business). One guy even walked out mid rush to have a cigarette ( we only know this because he announced it on his way out). read more

Food was decent. Very average place with terrible customer service. The burgers are cheap, and the quality represents that. The owner of the place's ego gets in the way of giving good customer service. I would compare the thin beef patties to be equivalent of Burger King burgers. Sorry for the bad photo . But if you know Indianapolis you know Mr. Dan's burgers are classic !. The have been in the city longer than I have been alive and im 32,. They are essential to eastside part of town , it one of the only late night eating spots other than white castle. Be warned if you do come here after the club or bar it will be a line on the weekends, the hours have changed because of staff and covid. But weekends are still the same 24hrs, they close at 12pm on the weekday. They added a new menu! They have chicken tenders now with choice of sauce I think,chicken sandwhiches, and new breakfast items . Im very glad they revamped the menu. Before back in the day there was no chicken. Please stop by keep small business alive!!! I worked at Mr. Dan's as a manager (CriteriaCorp.) for almost 20 years. I quit in 2003. It was clean, honestly good food. Everyone was friendly and most of the workers had worked years there. All beef hot dogs, homemade chili, hamburgers with their own blend of seasoning along with French fries, home fries w/special seasoning. Yummy! read more

Wish there was a drive thru. It taste like a chain that used to be more prominent in the 80s (Mr Dans) good chili and burgers. Wish they carried Heinz ketchup vs watery cheap generic. Dining area remains closed. Using the old covid crutch. I love these kinds of places. A small, locally owned place, been in business for almost 70 years...awesome. Is it gourmet? No. But it's good and no frills. I don't usually make it down this way, but was driving by for work this morning, and you could just smell the goodness driving by. On my way back home I stopped in and got some breakfast. The sausage egg sandwich was on toast, no cheese (I said it was no frills), but the flavor of the sausage was really good. The home fries were hot, crisp...almost like a potato wedge...seasoned well. I was surprised how flavorless the burgers are. It was still good though. The price is a little high for what it is too like the cheese fries cost $1.50 extra for some grated cheese on top. My friend absolutely loved the hot dogs so I added a star. My advice is get the hot dogs and not bother with the burgers. read more

Been here a couple times now. I ordered the Chicago Dog, and a double cheese burger with everything on it. The Nathan's dog was pretty solid, and they fix it up with a lot of veggies. I wish it had tomatoes with a pickle, but oh well. It was still a great value for the money, only $2.85 I think. The burger was a (Working Mans Friend or Steak and Shake) style, the slap and smash the meat patty. On a side note, the lady working the window should learn to be more personable. Mr. Dan's A GREAT burger joint. Everything is made to order so it does take a little time for your order to be completed. It's worth it though. Lemonade is great! Burgers are great! Fries are great ! Two problems. 1They don't have chicken sandwiches. 2The owners wife or owner is COMPLETELY rued to her employees, & even short with her customers. I HATE to see a person talk down to someone. They are even open late on the weekends. Keep in mind though if you are scared to be downtown on circle city classic weekend or expo weekend. Then you Definitely won't feel comfortable late night at mr dan's with the post club crowd. The other dude, the one tasked with taking my order, accepted my "Mr. Dan's burger, please" and sold me, street style, onions and tomatoes and cheese - it was somewhere between beautiful and pathetic, the way he brought my order up to a reasonable price with extras that shouldn't have been extras. But I acquiesced, because it seemed rude and un-delicious not to, and got a very nice fast-food burger and VERY nice homestyle potato fry side. Big Dan's is a great example of what I love about Indy (and larger cities). You can find these hidden gems that all the locals know but outsiders rarely stumble upon them. One day, while heading downtown, Google Maps told me I could get there faster if I got of 465 and took Pendleton Pike/Mass Ave South. As I drove further from the interstate, I entered a part of our city I didn't even know existed. And then suddenly, there it was. The bright lights and bright color scheme literally made it glisten like the gem that it is. I didn't have time stop that day, and it took me months to get back, but I finally did! I already had dinner, so I couldn't give the menu a full try, but I did get the namesake "Big Dan" burger, deluxe with cheese, and a side of fries. The burger was very good. Made fresh. The fries were outstanding. Fresh, hot and loaded with salt. I wish I'd gotten two orders of fries. I don't know when I'll be back, but I might start taking Pendleton Pike/Mass Ave into downtown more often now. read more
