I cannot say enough good things about Gregg. I had gotten two bids to remodel my kitchen prior to speaking to him-one was way too high and one contractor was unresponsive. I asked the owner of the cabinet and countertop shop I was working with who she would recommend, and she passed back Gregg's name as one of the "good ones". Boy was he ever. He was responsive, stuck to the estimate he provided, finished ahead of schedule, and was always in my corner with the subcontractors. I just cannot say enough good things. Gregg Martin with The Ground Up was a referral from my realtor Stephanie Panozzo with Gottesman Windham Realestate. (Stephanie is amazing in her own right - see my other review of her and Gottesman). I needed a handyman for odds and ends around the house before I moved in. (I consider myself handy, but know the extent of my abilities) Gregg is great! He's efficient and does excellent work that needn't be done over. He's professional and shows with a uniform shirt even. I've entrusted him on a few occasions with a house key to get something done while I was out. He's managed EVERYTHING I've thrown at him - and done so well above my expectations (which are high). To name a few items I've asked him to do: -Hang pictures on a masonry interior wall -Change locks - and add deadbolts. (Locks were ordered pre-keyed from gokeyless.com - saved a bunch this way!) -Add a door to a closet -Patch and paint dings and dents -Cabinetry and countertop fixes and additions -Remove nesting birds from my kitchen range vent - and replace the vent cover with a better system for keeping critters out. ***DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME CONTACTING.*** All too common with contractors, so very unprofessional. Same with Greg. I called him yesterday and he called back within a half hour. We came to an agreement that he'd come to my home to look at a retaining wall I need to replace. He said he'd text me in the morning with a more exact arrival time. Today I texted him at 11am to find out when he'd be coming. This is the response I got, "5126739442: Hi Nathan I can't meet my stone guy there until Saturday morning. Can we meet then? It would work best for us then. Let me know, thank you. Nathan Rice: Greg, yesterday you told me you'd be here today. 5126739442: I was trying to get to you today but my schedule is always full. If Saturday doesn't work I understand and will have to pass on your project." There was no confusion when we made the appointment, I even ended the call by saying, "see you tomorrow." I stayed home from work (opportunity cost) to meet him and he didn't even have the courtesy to give me a heads up. I had to reach out to him. So inconsiderate of my time. If you can't show up on time, how can you be trusted to do the job correctly and ethically? Come on guys, when you make an appointment with someone, keep it. PS: I'm a licensed realtor/landlord/investor and I know many investors who are always asking for a reliable contractor. I guess the search continues because The Ground Up won't be getting my referrals. read more

After a bidding process, we selected Gregg to renovate our shower and that included removing a cultured marble shower that was leaking. His team, from start to finish, was very professional. They also do quality work. But the star of this show is Gregg's personal involvement. From taking us to a tile store to giving us fixture advice, he is top of the line and we have lived all over the country before settling in Georgetown and suffered through renovations almost everywhere we went. Gregg was here virtually every day his crew worked on the shower. And wasn't just hanging out. His attention to detail of even the more most minor detail was outstanding. My advice? I contacted Gregg to get an estimate for a sizable construction project. He came out, went over the job with me and said he'd get back to me with an estimate within a week. A week later, I called him and asked where the estimate was. He said he was working on it and would send it soon. A week later, I called again and he said he wouldn't be able to start on the project for two months. I told him that was fine and he said he'd send the estimate shortly. Two weeks later, I emailed him and asked what was going on. He told me that he had gotten busy and was going to pass on the job. I responded that it seemed very unprofessional not to let me know immediately when he decided to blow me off. I could have spent time looking for another contractor. I got no response to that (not that I was surprised at this point). This guy is a waste of time. Look elsewhere. read more

Same experience as with others. He set an appointment for a Saturday, showed and never bothered to send an estimate. He also hinted that he was not the person that did the work. I guess overall he did what we asked although we had very different opinions on how things should look when completed. There were rolling lines visible after painting. He failed to tell us of certain charges before he started doing something. He didn't have help with him to complete our job on certain days when he said he would be completing something on a particular day. But after a frustrating two weeks of a one week job he finally finished. I don't think we will be hiring him again for anything. read more
