I have recommended Marks Builders to many of my family and friends, and they've all had great things to say too.  Read on if you want the whole story! I had a leak in a wall between two bathrooms, above the kitchen.  Just to set the scene, my wife was pregnant and we had a baby due 3 weeks after the start of the construction.  My kitchen had a dropped ceiling and was original to the 1970s house.  Dustin worked with State Farm (my insurance carrier) to bring the adjuster's repair estimate up to a par. He and his team worked with us to order cabinets early (we were getting custom cabinets so they had a long lead time), then they gutted the kitchen and bathroom, raising the ceiling to 8' (reworking the HVAC, plumbing, and electrical lines in the process).  They pulled up all of the tile in the downstairs while we were out of the house (and in the hospital having the baby).  We asked for a few days at home without construction when we came home, to which they agreed. They worked hard to make sure that the house was ready for cabinets when they would be delivered. The cabinets were delivered without issue and installed the same week, with the trim taking longer than any other single step because they wanted it to look just right - and it paid off! The finishing touches make all the difference! The granite crew came in and did their thing. Like all of Dustin's sub-contractors, they were on time, professional, and courteous. They did their work well, quickly, and cleanly. We opted for granite counters and granite backsplashes, with different edge finishes in different places, corners, etc. to work around. They did it all well. Our kitchen looks fantastic, even a year and a half later. Through the whole 2-month process, Dustin's crew was on-site 4-6 days/week, except when we asked for the break. We made a lot of changes midway through, and Dustin didn't nickel and dime on the little things (moving an outlet, changing from a 2 gang to a 4 gang plug, etc). He was happy to work with my attention to detail (which can frustrate most people I know) and he did it with a smile - his attention to detail was similar. His crew was always fun to have around, and I never once worried about them being in the home, whether I was there or not. They worked hard to make sure we felt safe with them in the house at the start of Covid. All said, I strongly recommend Marks Builders. They're honest, smart, hard-working, and fun people who care about the work they produce and their customers' experience.

In all sincerity, I hate leaving bad reviews for companies. My preference is to fix issues ahead of…read moretime. In this case, I've tried but haven't been able to get anywhere. Based on a realtor's referral, I chose to use Allies to renovate my upstairs bathroom. This was the second contractor I attempted to use for the renovation, as the first company turned out to be a bit of a scam (I have supporting emails and reviews from their "victims"). The first contractor completely demoed the bathroom, and I already had all the materials (tile, mirror, paint, etc.) that were needed to complete the renovation. Allies said they'd take over the job and get it all done within a few weeks, which was a relief after my experience so far. My contractor was Chris. He had great reviews for roofing work, which makes sense considering that not much communication is needed between the contractor and client. I didn't learn until much later that this was Chris's first indoor renovation and client-facing job. Chris told me his least favorite thing about a job is "talking to clients." He also told me that sometimes clients have to beta-test the subcontractors they use. So, this kind of sets the scene for my experience. When remodeling a bathroom, a lot of communication is needed, especially when Allies subcontracts most of the work. My wife and I were generally happy with how the work was going in the beginning, but then Chris started acting strange and pushing back or trying to charge us for minor changes or unexpected work that came up as the job progressed. Things continued to become strained between Chris, my wife, and me to the point that we got into more than one argument or tense exchange about what was covered in the contract versus what work would be an extra charge. When the tile work for the shower started, the subcontractor added a metal trim that we hadn't asked for. Chris said the trim was standard for tile jobs, but it was not covered in the contract, so we'd have to pay extra for it. When we pushed back, he wrote a list of all the "extra" work that he hadn't charged us for, and made my wife negotiate with him on who would cover what. Toward the end of the project, we gave Chris a list of items that needed to be done to complete the renovation, essentially a "punch list" of small fixes that is normal to provide to a contractor before they finalize the job. Chris started arguing with us about reinstalling a towel holder that had been removed at the beginning of the job. He also yelled at us about all the work we were trying to have him do that wasn't covered by the contract. I was so upset that I left in the middle of the argument, so things didn't escalate between us. My poor wife stayed with him and was able to "calm him down." Although he attempted to apologize to me, I was so fed up with his behavior by then that I told him in not-so-nice terms that I was done speaking to him and that my wife would be his point of contact to finish the job. Chris's partner, Steven, ended up calling me about the situation. During the job, Steven had made it seem like their company was on the client's side and would do the right thing. During the phone call, he informed me that Chris was upset because he had underbid our bathroom renovation and had since been trying to make up for it in additional charges for work that wasn't explicitly in the contract. Keep in mind, we were paying a very large sum of money for the renovation, but Stephen told me that he would have charged much more and that, because the work they do is high quality, they generally charge more than other companies. Steven ended the call by telling me to "never speak to his employee like that again." This is after his employee, Chris, had yelled and been antagonistic to my wife and me that day and throughout the job. We had very minimal contact with Chris after the argument because of how upset we were at that point. Chris seemed happy to be finished with the job and didn't attempt to do much of a walk-through to review any issues with the work. Instead of cutting the tile properly, they tried to mask it by putting a ton of caulk, but you can see jagged edges where the caulk doesn't completely cover it. They also left nails sticking out of the side of my house due to an in-wall medicine cabinet they installed (my siding is also falling off). Their carpentry is also garbage. They installed a "slow-close drawer" in my vanity that requires a hard push and then a shove to close it. The pocket door they installed doesn't close all the way and slowly slides open on its own. I contacted Stephen several months later to try to resolve these issues. He admitted to me that they fired the guy who did my tile, but fixing it is not covered under a "workmanship warranty," which, per our contract, Allies offers for one year after the job is complete. If you Google "workmanship warranty," it is supposed to cover poor workmanship, like my tile. Stephen refuses to fix it

Allies Roofing and Construction they were in our neighborhood, passing out flyers for their…read morebusiness. I Told them I can use a new roof on my patio cover. Their rep was Luke and when he got upon our roof to look at the patio cover he and his boss noticed that our homes roof had hail damage. They took pictures of the damage and I was able to to contact my insurance to do a claim to repair the damage. StateFarm sent out an Adjuster to evaluate the damage, Luke and a couple of Allies workers were there when the Adjuster was doing his evaluations. After a few days I received a confirmation from State Farm that the roof was approved for all the repairs. A week later I received a payment for Allies to order materials to start the work. Due to rain and weather the start was delayed until it was clear to do the roof. They showed up with a crew to remove the old shingles, repaired some holes they were ready to install the new shingles. They also got approval to replace the patio cover roof panels also. Allies were fast, efficient and did great work. The roof and patio cover completed. Last night we had a Rain Storm with high winds. When we came out to survey any damage we noticed our patio was dry. Very happy with their work. Would recommend them highly as their whole team from their office to work crew. Allies did excellent work including great communication throughout the whole project. I am a construction attorney and know very well the problems that people can have during a residential remodeling project. Because I know what can, and often does, go wrong, we had delayed starting this major project for several years. After our experience with Watermark, however, we wished that we had done this project years earlier. We couldn't be happier with the final results, how quickly the work was done, the quality of the work, and the adherence to the budget. Our architect prepared some initial sketches and we met with Mike to discuss the project and to get preliminary pricing. Mike quickly returned the estimates and with enough detail to make important decisions about the scope of the project, and changes that needed to be made in order to fit within our budget. We went through this process several times until we finally settled on the final scope and price. When we began the project, my wife was about 7 months pregnant (and we have a 2 year old) and we were concerned about lead-based paint in our house, which was originally built in 1962. Mike did the lead tests, which revealed some lead paint in old cabinets, and gave us detailed information about the EPA's new lead-based paint guidelines. Ultimately, the cabinets were removed (intact) to avoid creating excessive amounts of lead dust. During demolition, our architect commented that it was an "extremely clean demo" and in about 3 or 4 days, everything had been removed down to the studs, including the old Saltillo tile, and ceramic tile in the bathrooms. During this process, we met several of Watermark's subcontractors including the framer, plumber, and electrician, all of whom were extremely competent, friendly, and focused on the task and getting it done right. I frequently found the plumbing, drywall, and painting subcontractors working on the house well past 6:00 pm and even on Sunday evenings, in order to maintain the schedule. Throughout the project, Mike was regularly on site and anticipating upcoming issues. He communicated with us about potential issues that may arise, the need to address certain issues while they were exposed and easily accessible, and kept us focused on making selections (tile, plumbing fixtures, light fixtures, paint colors, etc.) to avoid any delays. We were motivated to complete the project as soon as possible, because we wanted to move back into the house as soon after having our second child. All of the major work was completed 2 weeks before the completion date, and we moved back into the house exactly 1 week before the completion date in the contract! In addition to finishing ahead of schedule, Mike was able to complete the project on budget. With any remodeling project (especially older homes) there are a number of unknowns that will undoubtedly occur. We encountered our share of issues, but Mike always kept us informed of the issues, and discussed the costs ahead of time. Even with the unknowns and the unavoidable additions/changes that occur during any project, we were able to complete the project in line with the budget. [You should budget an extra 20% for any construction project. Ours was only 10%]. It is obvious that Mike cares about the quality of the work and wants his customers to be happy with the finished product. On almost every occasion, Mike had already identified issues that needed to be correct before I could bring them up. He expected his subcontractors to perform the work to the same level of quality that we expected, so we were always very satisfied, especially with the final result. To sum up: this was a somewhat demanding project because the house was fairly old and required a significant amount of work, I'm a construction lawyer who is hypersensitive to potential pitfalls, my wife was pregnant, and we both had high expectations for the finished product. Not only was Mike willing to take on this project, he completed it on time, on budget, and with fantastic results!

Sam Tuttle was hired to do a build out on our metal building to be an Airbnb. In short Sam Tuttle is an con-artist. He mismanaged the funds for the job he was hired to do. He lied about how he spent the funds. He asked for more money when he knew he was going on vacation. Then he asked for the entire amount of the project when his agreement stated "three installments as the project moved forward." He refused to follow our vision. He did things his way and when we asked him for explanations he said he was going to need more money. In a meeting in our home he insulted our guest when they asked him a question. He got into a screaming match at our front door because he didn't want to answer legitimate questions about the concerns we were having. On this same day he walked off the job. Sam said he was a Christian and that he was honest. He was recommended by a close family friend which is why we hired him. There were huge discrepancies about how the money was spent. He told us different amounts on three different occasions which he why we wanted to talk to him. We knew based on the material at the job site and the number of days he worked that there was no way he could have spent all of the first installment. Because Sam walked off the job in anger we asked him for an amount we believed he should return to us. He agreed to this amount in an email and then has refused to pay us. He does not return our emails, he does not return our texts. This is the first time I have ever left a bad review for anyone. In this case, it is the right thing to do. Sam Tuttle is not ethical. He took advantage of me and my 82 year old mother. He lied to us. He mismanaged the funds and walked off the job in anger. I do not suggest you use him for any service. We regret trusting in him and allowing him into our home. Do not use his services. Stay away!!

After more than two years of dealing with unexplained sickness in our household, we finally…read morediscovered the horrifying reason--Alan's incompetence. We hired an another plumber and found out that when Alan built our restroom, he made the most basic, unforgivable plumbing mistakes that no professional should ever make. * Toilet Disaster: Alan jammed a 3-inch flange onto a 4-inch drain without securing it properly. This meant toilet water leaked underneath for years, creating a breeding ground for mold. * Shower Leak: He didn't even bother to use Teflon tape to seal the shower pipes, causing water to drip inside the walls, fueling even more mold growth. Because of Alan's shoddy work, our entire restroom was infested with mold, which then spread to our garage and living room. Worst of all, my son, who has been using that restroom daily, has been sick for over two years--all because of Alan's negligence. Now, we are paying the price--$30,000 in repairs, a full-scale mold remediation team, and the health of our entire family at risk. DO NOT HIRE ALAN FOR ANYTHING. He is a complete fraud who doesn't care about quality, safety, or your family's well-being. Save yourself the money, stress, and health risks--stay far away from him!
