The hospitality and service front line and wait staff was amazing! We were hoping to meet the chef Mashama Bailey, James Bread Winner, and we did. She was spent time with us and made us find super welcomed. Because we were visiting from Seattle, the staff offered a prime seating arrangement, a gift (fish dip) delicious. This place packed. Our reservations were at 8:45pm. Even after we arrived, groups were coming in to be seated. We have two staff assigned to us per usual. And we felt well intended to. One issue, our oxtail roast arrived warm, but we couldn't stop eating it. It was sooooo flavorful. When they asked for feedback, I made a comment about it. They immediately went into action and the manager came to our table to apologize. Amazing!!! They comped us a dish of fried shrimp. So good. We ended our evening with dessert (butterscotch pudding with peanut brittle) excellent! The lighting in the restaurant is great for setting a mood but awful for getting great photos. Just returned from a fabulous dinner at The Grey. It was my top pick for a place to host a work friend dinner in Savannah and it did not disappoint! I was told I had the best seat in the house, in a comfy couch booth for five across from the bar. Unique setting in a converted Greyhound station and super cool lighting and set up - I had read other reviews that it's too noisy but we did not find it difficult to have a conversation over our leisurely three-hour dinner. We all enjoyed the various drinks from the very extensive drink menu and then got started with our many shared small and large plates: chicories salad - 5/5 oysters (12) - 5/5 red snapper crudo - 5/5 (7 pieces per small plate) poached shrimp - 5/5 (6 per small plate) chicken meatballs - 5/5 (3 per small plate) turnip cakes - 5/5 (think light cornmeal like fried cakes, delish!) lamb chops - 5/5 (2 sizable chops, seared in harissa sauce) whole red snapper with some delicious verde sauce - 5/5 butterscotch pudding - 5/5 honey almond ice cream sundae with espresso chocolate sauce - 5/5 some kind of cake - 4/5 (but my friend loved it) So overall, every item was excellent and I heard rave reviews from our other tables of work friends who had the sweetbreads and the lamb heart beef tartar and the sweet potatoes. So not a bad item among almost the entire menu and so many delicious dishes! I highly recommend The Grey and will certainly go there again next time I'm in Savannah. Of note, place did not have anymore reservation available prior to our trip here, when we checked a week or so ago; so, glad we got a reservation here even though we made it just a day before. The Grey is obviously named after Greyhound as this was a converted bus station into this cool modern restaurant. And now houses a James Beard chef with innovative and inventive seasonal offerings. Any item on the menu would satisfy once palate but we opted for Jordan(our waiter) to give us his recommendations as he went through explaining the different dishes grouped in 4 sections, particularly portions and shareable dishes. Jordan took the time to ensure we had an enjoyable experience because ambience and service were just attended as well as the food! Indeed, this place did not skimp on any of the 3 musts, they or he and his back server Jack were top notch, creme of the crop of their industry! My husband took us here for our 10th wedding anniversary. We loved the ambiance and vibe of the entire place. We received an unexpected Happy anniversary greeting from the hostess as we checked and a hand written Happy anniversary card placed on our table making us feel like they went all out for the occasion. It is a cool space. Smaller than we'd expected. Wonderful that so many touches from the original bus station have been left in place. One of the first things that struck us was how great the "oldies" music was - 25 or 6 to 4, Blondie, Stuck in the Middle with You - nice touch. Second thing we noticed was how sticky the table was. I don't think it was dirty, probably the result of how it was wiped down, but everything stuck hard to it - the coasters, the menus, my hands and arms. At one point, my wife found it nearly impossible to loosen the menu so she could hand it back to the wait person. Really unpleasant. The menu is set up to make it easy to share a sampling of a variety of plates, with most of the dishes smaller portions, and just a few dinner sized. Realizing the menu is very seasonal and local, just a few comments about the ones we sampled. Grilled caulini - excited to try, I don't think I've ever seen caulini (baby cauliflower) on a menu before. The mole based plating overwhelmed the caulini. The least liked dish of those we tried. Disappointing. Crab salad - excellent, a very light circle of crab, crunch, flavored goodness. The best dish we sampled. Tuna crudo - also excellent, light, refreshing, delicious. Chicken country captain - our shared large plate. Half of a chicken, traditional country captain flavors. Good, middle quality of the plates we had. We included a side of smashed new potatoes with the chicken. Nice crispness that made the smaller pieces particularly enjoyable. I was very impressed with the teamwork. We were helped by many different staff, and they were all knowledgeable and professional. Even got into a short conversation with the wait person filling glasses, who was comfortable providing advice on how to have the best meal at the Grey. The dinner felt a little rushed. We'd asked to enjoy the plates one at a time, and all three smaller plates were served simultaneously, crowding the table, making it harder to navigate the dishes and share. Definitely got a bit of impression they were looking to get us in and out and turn the table. I read great reviews - not just on Yelp but everywhere - but the menu was cryptic, divided into sections "Dirt", "Water", "Pasture", and "Pantry" with not much description so I threw caution to the wind and went for the chef's tasting menu instead. Glad I did; quite an experience. These menus change from day to day so every meal is a surprise. Substitutions are usually not possible on a tasting menu. The waiter asked if I had any allergies or food aversions. I told him I will try almost anything once but I'm not into fois gras (some reviews mentioned they use it on occasion). Wouldn't you know, the second course was titled "Fois Gras" but he told me it was just one component in the dish, a pumpkin soup. Would they have left it out if I asked? Probably. Would they have substituted an entirely different dish? Unsure. I wasn't going to lose out on one course of this rather expensive 5-course meal so I said ok. Turns out it really should have been titled "Dutch Fork Pumpkin Soup" because that was the dominant component. The small slab of seared fois gras on top could have been entirely omitted in my opinion with no loss. But it really was quite good. Don't hate me. In fact, each of the 5 courses was outstanding, without qualification. Which you want to eat slowly and thoughtfully, trying to identify flavors that seem to change with every bite. I was there 2 and 1/4 hours. That's a long time to be sitting at a bar counter. I never got bored or restless even though I was dining solo. I kept busy watching people and taking notes on my iPhone. My neighbor to my left was also alone so I tried a few attempts at conversation. He was also taking notes, the old-fashioned way - in a notebook. I didn't get much out of him other than he was from NYC, needed to get away, and was working on his travel journal. When he left before me I wished him well on his travels and he did the same. I don't know if this is the rule or exception with tasting menus but every diner was allowed to proceed at their own pace. I expected everybody would be served together. But this way is much better in my opinion. An impulsive decision to add the wine pairing turned this to my most expensive meal ever. 5 wines (1/2 glass pours so it was manageable), selected to go with each course. This option exactly doubled the cost. Was it worth it? Well, these were all exceptional wines and which I would have never tried ordinarily, and are never available by the glass. Each wine is delivered a few minutes before the course is served by the sommelier, each in a glass appropriate for the style. He shows me the bottle, tells me a few things about the wine, and answers questions if I have any. I'm no wine expert, so I mostly didn't have any but one I liked so much (Domaine Gachot-Monot, Pinot Noir, Cotes de Nuits 2021) that I asked him where to find it. He asked where I was from (Massachusetts) and was able to tell me immediately the U.S. distributor (Kermit Lynch). Without a doubt an expert in his trade. So yes, it was worth it, but I won't be doing this often. My waiter, behind the bar, also served as bartender for this, the smaller of the two bars. I dealt more with the sommelier and the runners, but he was constantly keeping my water filled (no chlorine taste, whether it was bottled or filtered I don't know), checking up on me, and always available to answer questions. The room: very loud but fun. Very dark. Had to use my phone light often. It's a converted Greyhound bus terminal (hence the name) but so transformed you would hardly know except for some original signs (I was seated near "Gate 2"). Music: Patti Smith, Blondie, Fleetwood Mac, etc. As I said, the food was complex and my descriptions won't do it justice. So I'll just copy the menu notes here verbatim. It's not listed online because it changes day by day but will give you an idea what to expect. 1. SCALLOP CRUDO - collard green aguachile, celery, chives 2. We were visiting town for a conference and were so excited to visit The Grey. We adore the history, story, and supporting a Black-owned establishment. Mashama Bailey's Master Class inspired me to make Leah Chased's Gumbo Z'herbes. We made reservations months in advance and they were honored. I expected so much more. The food is not traditionally Southern--at least not all of it. There are local ingredients but the menu is remarkably eccentric and for the portion sizes things are highly priced. I would've liked the Coffee Cake to be slightly warm and my wife was denied alternative dressing for her side salad, which was pretty much a plate of greens. The take on fish and grits was much different than we typically make in the south in the Black community, given the gravy component, and at least two pieces of catfish could've been served with this. My Farmer's salad was mostly a plate of barley. I think it would be judicious to have a more thorough explanation of the dishes. Much is what we tried certainly invoked an acquired taste. We ended with the Chess Pie which i think I relished the most. I suppose I expected more upscale versions of traditional southern dishes which most of these dishes are in theory but not practice and execution. I would not expect to see many of these dishes on my Grandma's table, and word around Savannah is this is a Southern restaurant, but I contend it is an upscale restaurant in a Southern city more so. The ambience is nice, they have valet parking, and the service is stellar. I loved the live music. read more

Just to set the table if you will, we had high expectations going in. This is a James Beard award winning restaurant and chef, so we expected to have an exceptional experience. It is also one of the hardest places in town to get a reservation. First off, the setting and ambiance is very cool. It's a great space overall with a neat vibe. The bathroom situation is a bit small for that many people (had to wait in line twice), and the tables are very close together so getting in/out was difficult and cumbersome, but overall very nice. The service was the best part. It was outstanding, they all helped, they knew the menu very well,and were very timely with coming around, brining food and drinks. Ok. Now the bad part. I thought the drinks are over complicated, too many ingredients, and so the flavors get blended and lost. We had tried 4 of the house crafted cocktails and did t like any of them. Now for the food, first off not a Gluten Free item on the menu. The grouper was fishy and over cooked (had better grouper at Clive's). The chicken was good, but last night at the Collins Quarter the same dish was way better. I've done better on the grill at home. The presentations are nice, but the flavor wasn't there. The red rice balls were good, as well as the cauliflower dish. But overall I was very disappointed with the food for a James Beard award winning place. So service and space is 4 out of 5, but food was 2 out of 5. read more

Incredible adaptive reuse of an old Greyhound station into a chic restaurant. The chicken dish was huge (three of us shared two, and we could have fed four) and delicious. Drinks were top notch. Ambiance - very cool being an old greyhound station. The architecture here, as with many places in Savannah is great. The lights in the atrium area go on at every hour which is a neat aspect but makes the place pretty bright if you're not expecting it or aware of it. Service - 50/50 only because I waited in the bar area and he was great. The hostesses were not very cordial. I was told there was at most a 45 minute wait. After about 50 minutes, I was told that my wait would be longer because a couple changed their mind and wanted to sit at the bar (where I requested). I don't understand how they were given priority and my wait was pushed as compared to theirs. Once seated, at the bar, the bartender seemed to pay attention to those that were more than a party of 1. I struggled to get his attention to order, to get the check, etc. When it came to asking for suggestions, they were very open ended and not useful. Food - I ended up going with the pate and fish entree. Both were fairly good. I would come back for the food but the service was just so awful for a restaurant of this stature that I am not sure if it is worth a visit back. read more

There is a lot of hype around this place and for good reason. The restaurant used to be an old greyhound bus station and you can still see the nuances of the station within the restaurant. It offers a very unique setting in the heart of Savannah. On top of that, the food and service were excellent! I booked at this restaurant called The Grey for 9:45pm then I saw later on, at 8 pm, when I went to check their dinner menu, that they had a 9 pm reservation available, since our hotel is a mile away. I decided to go and ask in person if we could move our reservation to 9 pm with the host, whose name was Elliott. He stated yes. He could make that happen at 9 pm, and I would only have to wait 20-30 mins to just go to the bar for a drink, and they would come grab me. It is now 9:45, so I asked for a manager. Colleen stated that she was the manager of the restaurant and her only rectification of the matter was for me to sit at the counter and eat. I am a professional with a doctor's degree and decided to remain professional. However, I felt because of my race, they treated me differently. They actually allowed a party of 4 with no reservation to go before us, and I was truly appalled, and I'll be telling all my colleagues to never go to this restaurant it's ok to make people wait until there reservation however you should be honest and upfront instead of just making us wait for our reservation time which is as truly an inconvenience when we could have done something else for the last hour and a half instead of waiting with no checkin to the matter read more

I don't think this place gets the credit it deserves. I wouldn't have come here based on Yelp but I'm trying to fix that. Our driver recommended we come here and I'm thankful. We have eaten at every fine place in Savannah this week on vacation and I think this place deserves a 5 star rec. So it is loud and a young vibe. They probably need noise dampening tiles but it's vivacious. We started with a coffee and an espresso in the front bar which was basically empty on a Friday. Delicious thanks to the espresso machine. The cocktails alone should bring you here - better than the rooftop of Perry Lane for sure. Some of the best in the city. So come in to the front bar that is walk in and drink here. And we only like one bar in Charleston - Doar Bros if you haven't been. My fish entree was better than the similar Common Thread entree and that's saying a lot. These Grey entrees were outstanding. The chicken and the sauce was completely original. Don't eat fried chicken wings at Common & Rye (get something else) but get your behind here for the chicken entree. Now - Common Thread had them beat on the first two courses but not the main dish at all. So in my opinion - try both. Yes ambiance is better at Common Thread but if we are talking head to head food they're completely in competition. Don't skip this place if you're on a food tour of Savannah. These entrees are IT. I left Elizabeth's on 37th so full I thought I'd pop buttons but I'm pleasantly comfortable after this experience but I chose the crudité, the roasted oysters, and the fish entree here. read more

It was raining yesterday morning & luckily we found this super cute place. This is an old Greyhound bus station turned into a restaurant. The menu was a little different & it took us a minute to figure out what we wanted. I had the Omelette which was perfect. The potato crostini was really good. The only thing that always puzzles me is why anyone would want salad greens with breakfast (just me I guess). My husband had the duck pastrami & he loved it. The ambience was pleasant for that time of day. We sat upfront in the bar area. They had live music in the back which was nice for 1:30 on a Sunday. Our server Francisco was very nice & attentive. I have been wanting to go here for months (CA native) - in fact I insisted to my boss our quarterly meeting be in Savannah, for the hope to get the opportunity! Listening and watching Chef Bailey's story via Marriott Bonvoy - then continuing my interests to other platforms and research, I could not be more excited to have had a spot open up and experience such passion in culture, taste, smell and ambience. Andy was fantastic and made the best drinks - I had "Through the Grapevine" and "Wildflowers". I will say Wildflowers was exceptionally special to me. I also had a bold, rich and creamy Espresso Martini with dessert. I followed Andy's suggestion for "all water" - Tuna (fresh, zest, light) and Crawfish Etouffee (deep comfort, slightly sweet) were fantastic! Ate it all up! But I must say I was slightly hesitant on the Grouper originally - and the first two bites nearly knocked me off my stool in pleasure! I nearly teared up - absolutely perfect. Dessert I finished with the Buttermilk Chess Pie and previously stated Espresso Martini. I heavily recommend if you like a light zest and soft sweetness (think custard pie or crème brûlée). This was my 4th visit to The Grey and will absolutely be my last. From start to finish it was a completely underwhelming experience, bordering strongly on tourist trap. Our server from the jump made us feel as though we were a bother. The fish, which was the day catch, was described as Sea bass when in fact it was Striped bass - huge difference and was overcooked as well. When brought to the attention of the person serving, he just shrugged and walked away. Our server returned to the table and blamed the mistake on her ADHD. There was no offer of replacement or other accommodation. The first 2 courses were acceptable but hardly noteworthy nor memorable. It appears as though the Chef and management have taken their eye off the ball which is truly a shame. As the culinary scene in Savannah continues to grow and improve, The Grey has become lackluster and disappointing. read more

One of the top three meals I've had in my lifetime. The Grey had been on my bucket list for a long time and I'm happy to say we finally were able to make the trip + visit. The restaurant is in an old greyhound bus station and they've kept lots of the old elements in the decor within the restaurant. If you can, snag a seat at their horseshoe style bar as you'll get to connect with other diners who share your love for food! In terms of food they have two menus you can choose from each night and you can't make any substitutions but trust me you won't want to. We chose the 6 course menu and the highlight was the foie gras and grits topped with a homemade jam. I wanted to lick the plate (maybe I did). Dining at an old Greyhound bus terminal-turned-restaurant is definitely one of the cooler experiences you can have in Savannah. The jazz standards and crooners singing in the background set the tone as you settle into refurbished leather seating that mimics the original station's. The service is friendly and the bartender likes to put on a bit of a show. The food is excellent. The salted fish croquettes were savory and matched with a punchy, lemony aioli. The falafel was a little underwhelming, but the pork was juicy, and the smashed potatoes were a delicious side. The real star of the show, however, was the succotash. Food at The Grey was good, however I tried for hours to change our reservation to add a person, I called about 10 times and left multiple voicemails. Their answering recording says there is a reservationist from 12 pm to close, but it's not true. They never answered the phone and never returned my calls. When I arrived at the restaurant and explained this, the host did not say anything in response. No one expressed any apology or even acknowledged my complaint in any way. Shame on the Grey for caring so little and treating its customers so poorly. Ambiance was nice except that every hour on the hour there is a very harsh fluorescent light that shines on everyone, which is apparently an art installation that is intended to be harsh and ugly. read more
