The inside was super cute and clean. Service was okay. But the food was actually pretty good! The beef bacon was different but in a good way. The pancakes were yummy! The shrimp and grits were better than expected. The yeast waffles were not that tasty to me personally. Apparently, I do not like the taste of yeast. But I'm glad I had the opportunity to try it. The Great Commoner is my new favorite brunch spot in Michigan, and that says a lot because I absolutely love brunch. To start off, I love that everything on the menu is halal (the trend at virtually all the restaurants in Dearborn). They also have a large selection of mock-tails. For brunch I tried the B.B Egg Croissant Sandwich and absolutely loved it!! The beef bacon was flavorful (which isn't always the case in Dearborn), the "fancy sauce" on the sandwich was delicious and not overwhelming, and everything is topped with gooey Muenster cheese. The common side potatoes were okay, I relied on the ketchup to help me get through those. The chocolate chip pancakes were DIVINE. They top it with strawberries (just two small slices), whipped cream, cocoa nibs, and drizzle chocolate ganache all over everything. The pancakes are also a decent size. I also got a side of burnt cinnamon whipped cream for my pancakes, highly recommend! My friend got the breakfast burrito and ate it so fast!! Definitely a hit. Lastly, the side eggs were also very yummy. *I wrote this review in May '23, and forgot to post it.* I was unable to use my truckie on Mother's Day weekend because it was in the shop, I chose last Saturday to take my mother and aunt to brunch. I chose the Commoner after hearing so much about it. It was packed this morning. We waited over an hour to be seated. When we were finally called, we were taken to a lone table on the opposite side of the restaurant. Situated between two sofas and directly in front of the restroom, the space was super uncomfortable for dining and celebrating. There was a guy partially laying on one of the sofas and other one had a few men relaxing on it having conversation. I felt like I was seated at the kids' table at a crowded dinner at someone's home. The waiter came at a normal pace, from giving us menus to taking our drink order to serving our food. I shared with him my displeasure; he apologized and sent someone over to speak with us at the end of the meal. She brought with her two desserts for the three of us to share and apologized for our discomfort. The waiter also shared that the chef offers a fantastic dinner menu experience and invited us to check it out. Perhaps that's why the sofas are there. Back to the meals, my aunt and mother ordered the breakfast burrito, which they both loved. We shared an order of Kennebec fries. I ordered brown butter pancakes. The pancakes were ok, but I didn't detect the flavor of brown butter at all. While the pancakes weren't especially flavorful, the cream and blueberry compote that accompanied them along with the fresh strawberries made the meal delicious. I also had a lavender latte, which was superb. It looked so inviting as well. Overall, I will try the restaurant again, but I will make a reservation and ask to be seated in the dining room. The menu looks great, and there are some other things that I would like to try. I will leave stars for the food and the wait staff only and disregard my experience. As it was our first time and didn't know a reservation was required we ended up waiting. The wait was surprisingly pleasant since we were able to sit at the swanky coffee bar and order a cortado. Excellent taste as well as a nice coffee menu! You also have the option of ordering off the brunch menu and dining at the counter. Excellent selections on the brunch menu. it was difficult to choose because the descriptions are all delectable. We ended up with the wagyu burger and the labneh. Both were great in taste, quality of ingredients and preparation, portion and presentation-especially the labneh. They have a pastry case with an extensive selection, from plain and filled croissants to tarts, cakes and macarons. One can't go wrong with anything from the pastry case since they are Cannelle pastries which are the best in town. The lemon tart with the passion fruit purée inside is one of the best desserts we've had in a long time. This alone is worth returning for over and over. Service was great, everything came out fast, warm. Our server was pleasant and checked on us frequently. The restaurant manager also checked on us to make sure we were satisfied. We had to ask for boxes and when we asked for a bag the rolled her eyes. Food was good. Nice presentation but the customer service from the waitress ruined the experience. My group of five came here for brunch on a Thursday afternoon. We were greeted and seated right away. The interior is beautiful. Cool light fixtures, modern decor, great ambiance. Our server was friendly, helpful, and attentive. We all shared beignets ($12) to start. The order came with three, big pillowy doughs and chocolate and raspberry sauces. It was delicious and great for sharing. I ordered a honey cinnamon latte ($6) with oat milk (+$0.50) and a kale and quinoa salad ($13) with salmon (+$8) for my entree. I'm torn about what do with this review. Walking into the restaurant you are immediately impressed by its beautiful aesthetics. Nice large bar area, dark woods, just visually elegant. As I was by myself, I told them bar seating was more than fine. I was met there by the barista (is that the general name or just at Starbucks?) and I ordered a red eye, my absolute favorite specialty coffee. What's my favorite specialty tea? You will have to read through another review to find out, I'm not giving away all my secrets at once. Oddly enough I ordered the oatmeal, not sure why but I knew I would be nervous for my first day on the job and didn't want anything too upsetting I guess. Let me tell you, this was the best oatmeal I've ever had and it was so reasonably priced. Most places charge $7-10 for a bowl of freaking oatmeal, here was a place for under $3. Now here is where my issue with the review is. I enjoyed both the oatmeal and Red Eye, I loved the look and feel of the place. The staff was very attentive. But when they brought me the bill, the price of my items was more than what was listed on the menu. Was it a huge difference? No. But when I brought it to my servers attention they told me there was nothing she could do about it. I find this bizarre and this was the second breakfast location in Dearborn to do this. So while I have no issue with the food or look of the restaurant, I do have an issue with the honesty of the restaurant and the level of customer service. While I can't say anything bad about the food, I will not be returning. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth even though my meal didn't. read more

My manager set up a lunch and review with his staff here today. This worked out great, since this place has been on my bookmark for a little while now. The kale and quinoa salad and the superfood granola with almond milk was my pick for a lighter lunch, since this place looks like they have some yummy, but very heavy carby options. My fellow colleague and my manager got the grilled chicken sandwich with their homemade potato chips, another colleague got a salad, a croissant sandwich, steak and eggs and an uncommon BLT. I would highly recommend making reservations - when we got there at 9:30 we were told the only table that wasn't reserved was one in a side room. The side room was a very strange place to have a table - it was the only table in the space, and was across from the bathrooms and a door to the kitchen. It felt very awkward to be sitting there, but we figured that's what we get for not having a reservation. The food is good. There are a lot of brunch options, including plenty of vegetarian choices. It took an eternity to get our coffee and tea after we ordered it, possibly because we were in the side room where it was easier to forget about us. I would've given 4 stars if it wasn't for the service - everyone seemed annoyed or stressed. Something was clearly off that morning, but it made for an uncomfortable experience. First timer here! Ate here on a Friday right before noon. I was worried it would be a long wait but it wasn't. The bar is first come, first serve. 15 min wait for a table for two. Not a bad wait, but we opted for bar seating. We were greeted immediately. The staff made sure to let us know that the menu has undergone changes; meaning, items on the regular menu may not be available. After asking, we were given a stapled paper menu that had the current food options available. They have a really good coffee and tea menu and make their own syrup flavoring. I ordered the waffles and a side of crispy tater tots with a regular (Columbian) coffee; really good. The waffles have to be the best I ever had, no lie (chef's kiss). Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The raspberry jam was the highlight of the dish. It provided the perfect amount of sweetness. The whipped topping has to be made in house. The reason I didn't give 5 stars is because I wasn't a fan of the crowded bar seating. So many coffee condiments positioned on the bar made for a small space to eat. I had to request the syrup for my waffle. My husband ordered a latte and never received it. Also, the waiter had to wait for more ketchup, he said they ran out of opened ketchup in the back. He brought out a tiny bit and said he would go get more when he had a chance. Well, the meal was basically done by the time that happened. Nonetheless, I'm satisfied with the food and the service. While it is a beautiful restaurant and the brunch tastes good the ambiance and service feels very rushed. They don't allow people to work at any of their main dining tables despite having purchased refreshments, and don't allow them to dine in the smaller lounge area provided as a work space. On my previous visits, my party has been rushed and asked to vacate tables despite having made reservations weeks prior. The hostess does not come across as friendly and the overall attitude is unwelcoming. This place is right on the corner of Michigan Ave, as soon as you walk in it has an old school 50s look. The seating is very nice, the lighting was pleasantly inviting. We sat down and took our coffee orders, they have a whole wide menu of just coffee, I decided to get a French Press of coffee, then we got to our food order. I ordered Chicken Lemon Rice soup & a Breakfast Burrito. So when she brought out the soup it was VERY cold and I know this soup isn't supposed to be cold so she took it back and brought us another one. The soup has ALOT of lemon, as if I was sucking on a warhead, then as I got to the bottom of the soup there was hair in it, it was so gross that my wife quit eating hers. So at this point we are both hoping the breakfast meal tastes good because this experience is going from bad to worse. I have to say that the coffee here is REALLY good. I will give them that. Then came the burrito and the burrito was fantastic, the bacon was cooked to a crunchy stage which I love, the eggs were nice & fluffy, the tortilla was flavorful with all the ingredients inside. In conclusion this place is very nice, I'm sure the waitress was nervous after having to tell her about the soup twice but it's not her fault. The cooks did good on the burrito but the soup just needs to be scrapped because if there is a hair on my bowl then there is more in the whole container of soup. What a beautiful spot to grab brunch. There have a variety of different style of seating from lounge, high table tops & traditional tables. The ambiance was 5/5. They also cater to grab and go service with ample amount of pastry selections as well. This was a great option for those that opt out for a quick bite. The presentation of the food was great! Everyone, and I mean everyone, must have decided to take the day off and descend on this relatively new brunch restaurant and pastry café. I expected a quiet breakfast at around 10:30-ish on a weekday but the restaurant was filling up fast by the time I had arrived, though the ambiance was still relaxed. The restaurant is quite large and airy, with plenty of banquette seating. Luckily, I was able to nab a table outside, rather than be relegated to the bar since I did not have a reservation. Being short, bar seats tend to be uncomfortable since my legs dangle. Here, the seats looked even more uncomfortable as they were small and unpadded. While it was hot outside and the tables were unshaded, I preferred to be outside - COVID. I was impressed by the menu. There were specialty toasts (ricotta, avocado); pancakes and waffles (brown butter, chocolate praline), and egg specialties (frittata, sandwich). More importantly, there were creations not found on other menus like labneh toast, shakshuka, and ful mudammas. The table next to me ordered what my 15-year old self would have ordered: cinnamon bun with ice cream, waffles with roasted strawberries and chocolate sauce, biscuits, and sausages. The small bistro table could not handle all the dishes without some re-arranging. My more mature self had the protein-heavy, grilled flank steak with scrambled eggs, confit garlic (!), and chimichurri sauce. I loved the grilled flavors of the dish and the full-bodied taste of the garlic but was disappointed by the poor preparation of the steak. It was medium well instead of the requested medium rare. Instead of indulging on the home fries, I had the almond croissant. Unfortunately, it was just okay - a bit greasy (it was heated) and had insufficient almond paste. During COVID, I had discovered the wonder of the almond croissant and have been sampling it throughout the city. This version just did not pass muster. What was extraordinary was the pastry case filled with picture-perfect pastries. I was so enchanted I forgot to take pictures. There were éclairs, chocolate and macarony-typed desserts, and tarts - as part of the joint venture with Matt Knio (Cannelle). I sampled the strawberry tart, a shortbread crust with a light layer of white chocolate, pastry cream, and glistening strawberry halves. I had a taste of the mille feuille, featuring layers of buttery pastry and vanilla cream. But best of all was the St-Honoré pastry. Not only was it delicious, it was incredibly creative. Like the strawberry tart, it also included a shortbread crust, this one coated in chocolate. It was filled with pastry cream and strawberries and topped with mini cream puff pastries, a cookie layer and even more cream, shaped in a flower. It was dusted in cocoa powder. I've had many pastries from Cannelle but this might have been the best. Another factor that upped the experience (from 3 to 4 stars) was the service. The staff here, and especially my server, was beyond friendly and helpful. Pro-tip: grab a reservation, especially during the weekend. If it gets this busy during a mid-week brunch, I can only imagine the crowds during the weekend. read more

I gave this restaurant a two stars because of the unethical act of the server . She added 20% of gratitude to my bill WITHOUT my authorization!. My total bill was only $39.75. When she brought back my credit card, she charged my credit card $47.70. I don't mind adding 20% of gratitude, but I DO mind if the server adding it without my consent! Dining in, I ordered the black bean burger and eggplant portobello panini and a cold brew with pistachio syrup. The black bean burger is moist and flavorful. It deserves a five stars.
