I went here after a long time, and the first time since they switched ownership. The restaurant vibe it still the same (which I love) and the staff were very friendly. The food was great but didn't have a phenomenal taste for the price point it's at. I ordered the Makanek Sausage Hash and a hot matcha latte. The matcha latte was great and had the right ratio of milk to matcha (also wasn't too sweet). The hash was delicious and the presentation was incredible but unfortunately, it was over spiced for my liking. I could taste freshly crushed black pepper in every bite and it over powered the other flavors of the dish. At a higher price point, I'd expect the dish to have a better combo of flavors. We spent some time in Downtown Dearborn and decided to end it with delicious brunch! There are so many amazing restaurants in Dearborn but this has been on my list for a while. It's a very cute restaurant and it was busy, but not crazy. I would imagine in a weekend that it probably has a wait though. We decided to split breakfast and it's a darn good thing we did! The portion size was absurdly large. Even with two of us eating we barely made a dent in it. We chose the strawberry Shortcake waffles. They were INCREDIBLE! I bet my blood sugar was in the 300s after this. Haha. They don't serve alcohol but they do have a variety of coffee drinks and smoothies. I was a huge fan of the pancakes here, thick with plenty of blueberries and my favorite part some Michigan maple syrup. I really cannot stand fake maple syrup being from Vermont so this made my day. I was happy with the portion sizes as I didn't get two small pancakes (like most of brunch spots). I got 3 quality thick blueberry pancakes that were extremely filling. I got a brown sugar expresso that was alright. It wasn't bad but any means but not as good as the jabal coffee from jabal coffee house. I recommend this spot as a good go to for brunch for a reasonable price. I was going to go to avenue brunch but every place was packed to the brim. My friends and I were here for a concert and decided to get brunch in the morning and this is where we came. The place is a very, very cute! The staff was nice, but I will admit our server was a little slow to get to us and get items to us. I got the steak and eggs. I don't eat eggs so I got double potatoes. It was tasty but my steak was a little over what I wanted being a little bland. I also was kind of upset because I wanted more chimichurri and I didn't realize until after I got my bill at for a little Ramekin. It was three dollars. I wish my server would have made that known. The strawberry shortcake was delicious my friends and I all shared it . I'm very picky about my coffee, but their coffee is very much to my strength level. Overall, my friends and I are ever back in Detroit. We will definitely visit this place again. read more

Came here again recently for lunch after a work meeting. The space is as beautiful as ever, and I appreciate the variety the menu has here. We came here today for brunch at 12:50. We originally planned to eat elsewhere, but the wait was over an hour. Popped in here for a coffee, but decided to stay for food because there was plenty of space and instant seating. Awesome! I ordered the Salted Caramel Corn Latte. We waited at least a half hour for that to come (The photo of the latte was taken at 1:36). It was a nice flavor, I did not finish it as the flavor seemed highly concentrated the lower the cup got, may have benefited from a stir up on my part. The waitress didn't care to check in on us, so we could not even place the food order. The couple next to us sat down just after we did, and they were already half done EATING before our waitress (different women than the people next to us) even took our order. I ordered pancakes and the boyfriend ordered the 3 eggs any style. My pancakes arrived with no syrup. I waited twenty(!) minutes before the waitress came to check on us so I could ask for syrup. We never saw her anywhere and had even asked the attentive waitress from the neighboring table for some. The pancakes were ok, but also a tad flavorless, I'd probably go with something else next time. The 3 eggs any style came correctly, though the pile of eggs didn't really seem like 3 eggs worth? We finished up and the bus boy took our dishes and still the waitress didnt come back. The other server ended up saying she'd let ours know we wanted to hit to road. We left at 2:25. The vibe of the restaurant was nice, loved the atmosphere! If we had a more attentive server, I'm sure the review would have been more than a 3! read more

I ordered the matcha latte, which was just okay. The egg and cheese croissant was also pretty average -- nothing particularly memorable. The potatoes were a bit disappointing, as they were overly oily and felt like they were almost drowning in it. Overall, it's a lovely spot for pictures and catching up with friends. Great restoration on a historical building in Dearborn. It was always in need of TLC. Good service, very tastet food and reservation are a must. We had brunch and there still so much on the menu we need to come back and try. For me, I'd skip the S'mores French Toast. This was a huge suggestion from the server and my cousin but it was way too sweet for me. The lamb flatbread- I wish there was more lamb but still good. I would have it as something to share with the table and not as a stand alone meal like I did. Great coffees and teas. It's pretty loud so maybe it would be better outside on the patio next time. I hate that I have to write this review, but this has to be shared. My family has been coming to The Great Commoner for awhile now. We enjoyed the food for the most part and the ambience, but after the recent experience my mother in law had, we will not return and recommend that you be cautious, should you come to this establishment. My MIL had taken my daughter for lunch here one day. Shortly after dining in, she received a phone call from this restaurant accusing her of stealing $50 from a server. They told her that they had her on camera as she continued to tell them that wasn't true. She later called back and requested to speak to the manager. When given the manager, the woman that she spoke to sounded exactly like the one that had accused her earlier, but she chose not to reveal that or apologize for the lack of professionalism. Later on, she received a voicemail from the owner. The owner said that they apologized and had the wrong person, but never once used the words, "I'm sorry." I'm not really sure if The Great Commoner staff and ownership are aware of this, but they are not the police and it's wild to think that they thought accusing a customer of stealing was 1) appropriate and 2) that if they were going to that they would make sure that they had the right person. In the case that someone had stolen, I would think that they would call the police instead of playing police themselves. read more

I had the most wonderful experience at The Great Commoner! our server was incredibly helpful when trying to decide what to get, and recommended the ful mudammas to me, which I licked clean. It wasn't very busy at all and we went around 11am. They sat us in the back near the kitchen door at a tiny table right next to another couple. There were plenty of open tables and even when we said something the hostess was defensive. The service was slow but the coffee was good and the food was decent. read more

Have you ever had a dish where you don't want to brush your teeth again because you hope the flavor will linger forever? I ordered the brisket hash with scrambled eggs. I had been wanting to go here for a long time and decided to take our lunch group for work there. We do a monthly lunch group with Senior Citizens and they usually love all my picks and this was no exception. Food, service and ambiance was all exceptional. There were 12 of us there and all 12 left happy. I couldn't decide between sweet and savory so I split 2 dishes with someone else so we could try both and very happy we did. We had the avocado toast and the berry pancakes. The bread used for the avocado toast was good and crunchy, egg cooked to perfection (not too hard and not runny) overall great flavor. In the spring, it was still cold out so we ate indoors. This time around, it's early fall and we are having brunch outside. First off, the coffee... yes to it all! Everyone who ordered coffee, loved their flavors. Pancakes are light, fluffy, and delicious. The breakfast burrito is really made for two people... So yummy and filling. No complaints on the steak and eggs (the person who ordered it is a picky eater LOL). Our party of 9 ended up ordering a variety of menu items and tasting off of each others plates. Both visits, I asked for the Chef and gave him compliments personally. When we came in March 2023, they were implementing a few things and 6 months later, he's delivered a great dining experience. The breakfast/brunch menu was massive! From pancakes to waffles to crêpes to sandwiches, I have to get back to try more! Over at the café the pastries are to die for so after brunch, we went over and grabbed a delicious dessert and lemonade to go. Service was great and fast and in the warmer months, you can dine on the patio. There was just one single stall restroom that I saw, if I had to point out one con. The food here is delicious! It's one of my favorite breakfast or brunch spots. The energy of the place is very nice and relaxed with very nice decorations. The service e is usually very fast, and I didn't feel like I had to wait or flag down a server. The pancakes are very good, love the flavor options, I went with a nice blueberry this time. The prome double double was cooked so well and was very filling. I just realized that I hadn't reviewed this place yet, I've been coming here for a few years now. Normally, I'll stop in for Cannelle croissants, they're very good (I usually buy them at Eastern Market or Cannelle in downtown Detroit). They sell.out quickly, so get there early for croissants. One time 2 years ago, we came for brunch. I remember the service was very slow, most of us enjoyed our meals, some items were better than others. The restaurant is rather large, with several areas to dine in. There is a bar area, a sort of lounge area with sofas to just sit and have coffee. There is a counter that has pastries, croissants, bagels, a coffee bar, and a section of cold sandwiches packed to grab and go (they looked nice). We noticed that there was a private dining room (with glass walls) that was set up beautifully with what looked like pink glassware, candles, and flowers. I didn't want to stare, as there was a party of about 12 ppl in there. It was a beautiful setting. The ladies even seemed to be matching the colors of the table set up. So this time, we stopped in for coffee and something sweet around 9pm on Sat. We ordered a reg coffee and an Americano, plus a hazelnutella dessert croissant. The guy working the counter asked if I wanted it warmed up. It was very tasty, very messy though, you'll definitely need a fork and knife if warmed. It cost $9, I think that's a bit pricey since croissants are around $5 ea. There are beautiful pastries, macarons, etc, in the case, I haven't tried any that I can think of. ****I actually attached the photos of the brunch we had there 2 years ago. I'm not sure if these items are still on the menu, though. I did remember there was only turkey or veggie based, not any pork bacon or sausage, as the owner is Muslim. I'm sorry, not sure what any of the brunch photo menu items were called. I really thought I posted a review after we ate this brunch. We were headed to airport and wanted to eat some breakfast. We found this spot a few miles off and decided to try it. We went here on a Tuesday morning in downtown Dearborn west. What a cute and lively area. We arrived at 10am and it was pretty full still. That's always a great sign. We proceeded with the menu and the food choices were breakfast and lunch items but not too overwhelming. I ordered their avocado toast with scrambled egg on top. It was also topped with arugula.
