The Grain is a solid vegan go-to in Long Beach, especially for breakfast or brunch - which is served all day! The food is reliably good and the service is generally above average. The menu is big, which usually makes me a little hesitant (in fear of everything tasting mediocre) but in reality they have variations of a large handful of dishes so as not to create an avalanche of substitutions for the kitchen. It makes sense and I'm on board. When it comes to vegan brunch I have specific standards, so I will advise you to avoid the tofu scramble here unless you like yours super basic. The waffles and sausage, on the other hand, are pretty good. The best thing I've had here so far was the Club sammy. The smoked tempeh bacon was delicious and the garlic aioli was also on point. Failed to complete our order for the delivery person to pick up and had left us in a blame game between DoorDash and The Grain Cafe. The GF did admit to not setting the desserts aside but somehow it is Doordash's fault and we have to deal with them? Oh and they refused to provide the desserts we paid for even though they admitted they did not provide them. Literally paying for nothing. Manager was rude and unhelpful - said the only way he would do anything tonight was if we *drove* to the restaurant and he would give us cash for the birthday cake they failed to provide (did I mention that even though we paid for my birthday cake and it was on our ticket that they sold it to someone else.?) They made no attempt to be kind or compensate for giving away my birthday cake! Oh and the food taste like mud. We both ordered pizzas. It arrived cold and in plastic containers so it was a soggy mess. It's 8:40 so no other options. And it is waaaay overpriced for what you get. Where do I even start. We'll I'll start by saying this. I've been a long time patron of The Grain Cafe since before they expanded their Pico location and they were just a tiny tiny restaurant. First and foremost I love the food, it's always been fantastic. I'm also a huge supporter of Mr Oscar (the owner) and Mayra who even made our wedding cake 6 years ago. With that being said today's experience at the Long Beach location was utterly disappointing. More so with the establishment and the service. Came her with my partner at around 3pm on Sunday 9/25/22. There were only 3 other tables with customers, one table was finishing up and paying. We sat by the window and a waitress brought us the menus. We'll things went downhill from there. First, the table, floors, and chairs were not clean at all. The chairs were so sticky, I had to wipe them myself with a wet wipe. Second, there were about 3-4 staff hanging out by the register all just chatting or on their phones while we sat and waited for our server to return to get our drink order. Well, she didn't. We waited almost 15 minutes for her to come back and by that time we had looked at the menu and were ready to order food so we ordered everything all at once. Third and most disturbing was that a customer sitting by herself at the table next to us called over the same waitress to let her know she had arrived before another table that had just gotten their food and was wondering why she was still waiting for hers. The waitress was a little rude in her responses to the customer, when she finally brought her the order the customer asked her if she had informed the kitchen staff that her order had been placed first, the waitress very rudely said "tell them what?" As if she didn't know what the customer had just asked her to do. Then when the customer said "did you tell them that I ordered my food first like I asked" the waitress again very rudely responded "so you don't want the food?" The customer then responded with "what? Why are you talking to me like that?" Anyhow this exchange was very awkward and in my point of view it was nothing crazy for the customer to ask the waitress to let the kitchen staff know she had been waiting a while for her order. Imagine waiting that long and then the waitress saying "so you don't want it"... just very bad customer service. This customer left after finishing but I guarantee you she won't come back. Also the same waitress had her back towards the restaurant the entire time she was by the register as if she didn't want to make eye contact with anyone so she wouldn't have to do anything. My point is, it was very obvious this girl did not want to be there. So...I hope this feedback is useful for the restaurant managers that they need to focus on training their staff to provide better customer service at the Long Beach location. Once again the food is great and I've never had an issue at the Pico location the almost 10 years I've been going there, so hoping Long Beach gets better because if it doesn't, they're going to lose customers. read more

This place is hit or miss. We live right next door (girlfriend and I) and are vegan most of the time. We want to like them. Their serving sizes seem all over the place. Just ordered the wet burrito which was great. My girlfriend ordered a hummus appetizer for herself and honestly I'm offended at how small the size was. It was seven dollars, and tasted like overly salted pesto. Please beware, order only things you can find pictures of. The flavor is usually very good and we love vegan spots. I wish that the sugar could've been toned down a bit, as it overpowered the spice flavor. Wet burrito: MUST GET! Very salty. But very good. Reuben sandwich: the bread wasn't dark enough for my personal tastes as I like a really dark rye, but the sandwich was good, all things considered. Maybe could've used a bit more saurkraut. The tempeh was well cooked and it was plated nice. Sausage pasta: this was the best thing after the wet burrito. The sauce had a good deep, smoky flavor, and the bits of sausage were super salty and savory. I really enjoyed it. Chicken pesto pasta: this one was average, not the best but not the worst pesto pasta. I would eat it but wouldn't order it again. Lemon cake: oddly salty frosting, couldn't finish more than a few bites. Chocolate cake: I never go for chocolate cake, I would normally eat every other flavor of cake before chocolate. My sister and I came in HUNGRY, and were initially unsure as to how to order/be seated, but we were gestured to sit at any table and were happy to oblige, picking one inside by the window. After looking over the menu, we had made our decisions-- drinks and all. (We usually are not ones to splurge on any fun drinks and generally stick to water at restaurants.) First came the lemonade which was super fun and felt like a much kinder and sweeter version of a ginger shot, then of course the latte came, and it had a CAT DESIGN!!!!! SO CUTE! THEN came the FOOD!!! We dug in immediately. My sister ATE that reuben like no tomorrow, and I dove into my crepe-- the thousand island dressing was a real star, and the mango-strawberry combination accompanied by some chocolate was everything I wanted and more. Obsessed! My family had dinner here last night before a show at CSULB and we all loved it. It's a small place but it wasn't overcrowded so that was nice. We shared the nachos as an appetizer and it was truly delicious but fairly small for $10. I had the deluxe burger and it was INCREDIBLE. I was nervous about the "tempeh bacon" but it added a perfect flavor to the burger. My parents and brother all had different wraps with falafel which were also delicious but the burger was the favorite among the group. Our waitress was attentive and friendly-- I think her name was Crystal. I loved everything about this place except for the semi-high prices on many of the items. Still, I will certainly be back. I've been here a few times now and the chilaquiles are one of my favorite dishes! Update: I ordered a dirty chai latte. The most I've paid for this drink at cafes and coffee shops is $5. and somehow I was charged $7.25 without them telling me I would be charged for 2 separate drinks (chai and a separate espresso). This is my favorite beverage and I have never been charged like this AND they didn't let me know it would that expensive. Visiting from out of town, friends brought me here. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled with the choices. I built my own plate, with rice, beans, veggies, tofu and sauce. This is my FAVORITE thing to do at a restaurant as a person of rather discerning (aka picky) tastes. I was able to get exactly what I wanted. I come here and order through DoorDash all the time. To the point where they know my order by heart. This particular time I ordered through DoorDash and called the restaurant to be sure my order comes correct as I had a problem with my order a few weeks back. My order comes completely wrong. Joseline told me when I come in I can get the same order on the house for the inconvenience. When I come in the next day, Joseline takes my order and ensures I will receive this meal for free. A few minutes pass and another staff member, Nancy comes over pressing the issue about me receiving funds on DoorDash and said to me who told you I would get a free meal.. not speaking to me in a tone as a customer but as if I'm some girl on the street. Then why are you coming to me pressing an issue that wasn't between you especially after a solution was solved. Joseline then comes back to me, nervously asking did I receive credit on DoorDash because they are asking me in the back. I checked and I did. She said she was going to charge me and I said ok, but it didn't sit right with me as this was not DoorDash fault. It was the restaurant and I called prior to guarantee my order was correct and it still came wrong. Now my partner goes to the bathroom, which you have to go through the kitchen to get to and he here's the 3 girls plus the cooks talking about me. A loyal paying customer. My partner and I are restaurateurs. Therefore, my partner had to speak to the ladies to let them know they are wrong to be negatively speaking on a customer that patronize this establishment. Now, a new waitress is on the floor taking care of us and I explained to her why it was wrong to not try to accommodate a customer from their wrong doing, as if DoorDash is making the food. My time and money was wasted due to this. The new waitress understood and apologized for The Grain Cafe and the end result decided to comp my regular grain order for next time. I appreciate her for taking the time to understand the issue and Joseline for trying but Nancy learn to respect the customers and stay out of business that doesn't concern you, when you are not a manager or an owner. This would have been a great brunch experience if it wasn't for Nancy inserting herself with a rude tone and attitude. The food was great as usual therefore I'm giving 2 stars. read more
