The Bartender would not buss our plates out from in front of us. She just left all of our plates from the tapas on the bar so we did not stay for drinks. Had my wife's birthday dinner during our vacation in Killington. Heard good things about the food, and we were not disappointed. While we took advantage of the outdoor seating, when inside the whole place smells like dreamy roasted garlic. The food was excellent, and every table gets a plate of fresh roasted garlic with crumbled Parmesan cheese. We were instructed to spread it, like butter, on our fresh bread and dipped in balsamic vinegar. Our apps includes garlic mussels. The main dishes were the best part of the food! My main dish, shrimp and scallops with fra diavolo over linguini, was spicy and tasty! Our waiter, Ryan from Ocean City, NJ, was helpful, attentive, and had a great attitude. Why is this place rated so good. Drinks are good. Food on the regular menu is horrible. Salmon over cooked, picatta is dry and also isn't piccata. It's grilled chicken with capers on a bed of pasta. Eggplant parm is super soggy. The only thing that is above par here is their tapas menu and garlic confit with the bread that they complimentary serve. It's the summer maybe their good chefs aren't in town until the winter. read more

Last night was my first time at the Garlic and it will be my last. We were sat at the bar looking forward to a lovely dinner and catching up, When we were greeted with by our bartender. The bartender (man in his likely late 60s, gray hair, mustache, glasses, thin, wearing a Killington shirt), stated that there were local beers on tap, when I replied and said" yes I know those are local beers. I'm from here", his immediate response to me was "no you're not", given that I had only been sitting there for less than 10 seconds, it became immediately clear to me that this bartender was racially stereotyping me and assumed that given I'm a person of color that I am not a Vermonter. I am proud to call Vermont my home and I have dedicated my life to serving my community over the years. I was disgusted by what he said, Vermont is home to everyone; regardless of the color of your skin, your race or whether you were born in Vermont or not, it should not have to matter. Perhaps you should remind your bartender of his role within your establishment. And not to attack your customers with his personal opinions. Extremely bad service. The waiting was extremely rude. Tried to pay with discover, which they do not take and is not posted. The server insisted I go to the atm and get money. Only had discover card. How would it be possible to use atm without a debit card? Server insisted I go to atm and get money. He became obviously agitated and extremely rude. Let me start off by saying we "loved" this restaurant for almost a decade and visited annually during our ski trip. So we knew, there is going to be a significant wait time during a holiday weekend (doesn't accept reservations). However, this time we notice that the maître d was seating large group of people (9+7+7) who arrived way after us. So after 23 people got to eat before us I politely ask the male maître d, why are they prioritized. I was told that they have many large tables and they won't seat 2-3 groups of 4 people there because that makes it complicated for waiters, etc. So this was not a great start. After almost a 2hr. wait, we were seated and a female maître d was massively apologizing, although she laughed at us when we asked about the wait time, not cool. The waitress was polite, quick, good service. However, as we were always very happy with the food quality, this time is was a total disappointment! The shrimp and scallop scampi tasted like water, no spices, no sauce, very bland. The chicken Alfredo also did not had enough seasoning. The veal was very thin, but at least that dish had a good taste. Even their specialty the "roasted" garlic was different. It looked like it was steamed not roasted, so didn't had that great sweat taste and the bread was very dry and hard to cut. Overall, very unhappy with this experience. I went to the Garlic on New Years with my sons. The host "Dave" said there would be an hour wait. He told the people before us waiting the same thing. We waited almost an hour and a half and he proceeded to sit everyone but us, even parties that came in way after us. After asking Dave how he can sit other parties that came after us he shoved the list in my face and said you think I am lying and proceded to argue with me. STRAIGHT UP RUDE. I don't normally write negative reviews because I think it is a cruel thing to do to an establishment. However, the Garlic has on multiple occasions now displayed rude or unprofessional attitudes and I honestly hope the manager reads this and maybe addresses it to his staff. I appreciate quality food at a fare price, which the Garlic has, but I choose kindness and quality service over those factors. The Garlic acts as the finest NYC restaurant who wont bother to answer a phone call at any hour. And they don't accept reservations (which is expected of Killington). We have always gone in with a group of 8+ so we usually wait at the bar for an hour or 2 to be seated- so we spend plenty of money each year. One year the bartender took my dad's money off the bar- which is not bar etiquette when the man is standing there the entire time. The bartender then proceeded to argue about it with my father claiming there was no money on the bar. It could have been "stolen" by a nearby customer, but that is also the bartenders job to be observant of all patrons tabs & the money that lays on the bar. So most recently, we were horrified and will never go back to this establishment. It truly is a shame because again- the food is good, but I have had way more fun and better experiences at other establishments nearby like the Wabbly Barn, the Foundry, the around back BBQ, and Caseys Caboose. So 3 of us arrive at 9:02 after a 5+ hour trip. There website says they are open until 10pm so we figured 9PM was fine. The waiter is a few yards from the hostess station. He walks over to grab something and barely looks at us. He sternly says "sorry kitchen is closed. " -Oh noo really? "Yup." -But we just drove 5 hours (He is now yards away again by the service station not looking at us* He barely shrugs and doesn't respond, so my boyfriend says): -Can i go to the bathroom at least? "Nope." -Really? "Nope." (At this point we are shocked and horrified and confused as to why he is being so blunt and rude. He didn't make eye contact with us and spoke to us like an angry parent. So my boyfriend is disgruntled and upset and sarcastically says): -Wow youre a real nice guy. Lets get out of here Finally a man who looked like a host or manager comes over and says I asked the kitchen, we can seat you. We reluctantly say yes not knowing where else would be open. As we walk towards the waiter station by this employee (tall, skinny and tattooed- for managers reference) he says: "He cursed me out im not serving them" -I did not curse you out I said youre a nice guy "You cursed me out." -I work in restaurants too i would not disrespect you. "You cursed me out" -I would not disrespect the staff. "Go drive another 5 hours" -are you f* kidding me? "See he cursed at me again" **absolutely appalled...We were then seated and waited on by a different staff member after this very strangely, inappropriate, unnecessarily cruel interaction. In summation, I have honestly never experienced such a completely strange and rude confrontation at a restaurant. I cannot get over his last statement. Throwing a 5 hour drive in our face. It just truly showed what a cruel, low person he was. Disgusting. The waiter was outwardly rude right from the start and then continued to be confrontational when we genuinely were not. I'm a server myself, and I know that even if the customer is a total jerk- you should bite your tongue and play nice for the reputation of the business. This guy clearly had some personal issues that he took out on his customers and it's truly a shame because I give people/places many chances, but my family & I won't be going back here. I love tapas bar at The Garlic in Killington. Dave is always ready and willing to mix up a great cocktail, suggest a new beer or glass of wine. The food is consistently good and the prices are very fair in comparison to some of the restaurants in the neighborhood. The atmosphere sets it apart, whether you dine on a slow night midweek in the summer or busy night in the winter the lighting is always warm and welcoming. We came on a busy weekend and it took a while to be seated, obviously not the restaurants fault. Waiters were running all over the place and service was a bit lacking but the meal was decent and the ambience was good. One complaint was that we ordered a 2015 tempranillo wine and we received the 2018 bottle. Mentioned it to management later and they were apologetic and attributed it to "supply chain issues". We tried this place recently. Loved the experience. The complimentary garlic bulb with warm bread is a great starter. We then ordered 3 tapas (chicken wings, roasted mushrooms and cilantro lime shrimp). All three were excellent. Followed the tapas with Shrimp and Scallops Diablo. Loved it! I've been here a handful of times and the food is always so darn good. And the ambiance of the place is perfect too. I love the dimly lit vibe as it makes it very cozy and a bit romantic. The free roasted garlic they serve with bread is soooooo yummy! Wow! My filet mignon was so tasty. Cooked to a perfect medium rare. The pastas are all very good. Appetizers were delicious, best tasting sauce is the Puttanesca sauce. The plain sauce lacks flavor so order the puttanesca sauce on whatever you get. We ended up going here on our first night in town as our daughter couldn't stop raving about it, as she is a true garlic lover. When you first walk into the place you get hit by the order of garlic which isn't a bad thing but be prepared. The wait staff was friendly and as you might expect pretty much the whole menu has garlic and lots of it in each entrée. We started with a roasted garlic clove with bread and olive oil and it was perfect as it set the tone for the rest of our meal. The menu has a wide variety of different dishes including just pastas but to my personal surprise there was no Chicken Parmesan but I did find a Chick Bruschetta which was very close. My wife ordered a seafood diablo while I got the bruschetta and neither of us were disappointed. Overall at least the two dishes we had were excellent, pricing was good and we both felt the meal held it's value, so we recommend the place if you like Garlic and Italian food! Just be prepared, you may find that garlic taste AND Odor follows you into next day!
