Freshest seafood in the area. The prices on dinners are a good 25% less expensive than other places

It was May 24, 2025 Memorial Day weekend. I Met my son for lunch after work. Where he wanted to go wasn't open yet & we were hungry NOW! Yelp to the rescue. I've had this place bookmarked for a while. It's a fish market with a small restaurant section in the back. Our waitress Nicole was fun & friendly. Her personality made the food taste better. I think my favorite appetizer was the stuffed crab. That was very good. My son got the stuffed mushrooms. Yummy! I got the seafood bisque and my son got the lobster bisque. They tasted completely different. I preferred the seafood bisque. Everything we ordered was very tasty except for the francese sauce that I got on the side for the softshell crabs, I didn't even bother with it. But the Soft Shell Crab was lightly fried. The fresh fish (flounder) was excellent. Crab cakes were good too. Would have liked a bit more choice in the fish department but that's ok. Bay scallops were ok as well. There is also seating if you want to eat there. An unusual find were the black sesame seeds for at a good price. Highly recommend. read more

I have been buying fish here for over a decade. The fish is always fresh, and most are locally caught. They have everything from blow fish to striped bass. Now they have a sushi chef, making fresh sushi behind a counter in the middle of the store. Their rice pudding is the best one I have ever tasted on Long Island. It is creamy, flavorful and hearty. Take out service is quick. I usually get my fried food orders within 10 minutes. In 2023 The Fish Store won the Bethpage FCU's Best of Long Island award for best fish market on Long Island. Booked the room for 30 people. Upon walking in my party was wonderfully greeted by the owner, his family and staff. We only had a short window for dinner, staff was extremely mindful of this as appetizers immediately appeared simultaneously with drink and dinner orders being taken. Some from our party requested additional appetizers which were provided. Dinner was amazing! Some of the guests were from out of town and were thrilled with the fresh seafood!! This has been and will continue to be my go-to place for both lunch and dinner. BTW- the Riley Burger is top notch!! read more

Came here for restaurant week because it was one of the more diverse menus. It's a small place at the back of a fish store, but no wait on a weekend night so big plus for us! The service was fantastic, promptly seated, nice staff, never waited for water refills etc. We did the restaurant week menu and started off with the baked clams and bacon wrapped scallop. We also ordered crab cakes off the regular menu. Bacon wrapped scallops were really good, my friend doesn't even eat scallops and she enjoyed them. The baked clams were also good and so was the crab cake. For dinner I had the shrimp scampi which was over bucatini pasta. Good but I hate to say it was a little lacking. Lots of garlic and portion size was huge, but it needed some lemon and wine reduction in the recipe. It was executed well (pasta was cooked well, shrimp cooked well) but a bit bland. My hubby said the same when I brought home the leftovers. My friend got the crab stuffed salmon, which was good. It was a unique dish and we split it and enjoyed it. For dessert we had the cheesecake which was amazing, and the raspberry tart--also really good. Overall I'm glad we came and tried everything, the price is right, and if I'm in the neighborhood again I would definitely consider coming and trying other dishes. read more

Two words. Rice pudding. The best homemade rice pudding around - I know super random at a fish store? But that's right you heard it here - BEST rice pudding around. Stopped in for restaurant week and I had nothing to complain about - lobster bisque was so fragrant I ordered it after seeing another table enjoying it. I have basically never given out a one star review. The Fish Store used to be where I went to get fresh fish, at a fair price, from good people. I had moved to Islip Terrace from Sayville, and had tried finding a fish market closer to home, but no such luck. I went in there on Friday and was astonished by the obvious day old fish smell. Any fish market is going to smell a bit like the dock, but this was the stench of old fish. If you KNOW fish, it's unmistakeable. I used to be out on the boat with my uncles pretty often while they were fishing or clamming, I know the difference. I was disappointed and walked out without purchase. The piece de resistance- yesterday the business participated in a parade where they flew the flag of the Confederacy. If this were Georgia, or Tennessee, I might ALMOST buy the line about how it's part of the geographical history of the area. But given that Bayport was always a part of the Union- the North that fought to defeat the Confederacy so the United States could remain the United States- that was a signal to the entire community that this business is owned by proud racists. Their fish is rotten, and so are their morals. Don't patronize here. This is an island. There's literally plenty of fish in the sea. read more

Buying fish here is decent. But eating in? I got a salad that cost me $20. Half a piece of tuna that was overcooked, 2 cucumbers and some lettuce. House dressing that was a mouthful of sugar and they charged more for using my credit card. Insane. read more

Since i wrote that negative review several years ago i have returned on many occasions and each visit was as good as the ones prior to that one negative incident. it's a simple little bare bones restaurant but they do know how to prepare their seafood. Lobsters in particular come out perfect. Service is also very good. read more

In all honesty, I smelled the fish as I walked to the front door. I was taught, if you can smell the fish, you don't want it. Upon entering the smell of the fish slapped me terribly. My gag reflex took hold. I had make a u turn and exit. There was no ventilation at all. There was condensation on the windows. There was no circulation at all. I don't recommend it at all. I've written reviews before about meals we have had at The Fish Store. ALL good. Sometimes we eat there and other times we take out. Great fresh seafood. This is one of the few local places that knows how to PROPERLY cook fish and is consistent every time! NOT overcooked like you get at so many places. That said, I generally order Sashimi or Sushi entrées, which are only available on Thurs, Fri and Sat. - all prepared by master Sushi Chef Makoto. He is an artist. I usually order a Sashimi dinner. One of the things I love about his creations are that they are different every time! No boring same old plates you get at most other Sushi restaurants. Went to the fish market today and wow! Prices are reasonable, nice selection of fish, clams, crab cakes and so many yummy items. Walked out with lobster roll sandwich which was delicious, raw clams on the half shell, packaged nicely, cooked claws in garlic sauce, crab cakes, bucket of steamers, seaweed salad. Just ordered takeout..we have taken out before..not the best tonight. Clams on the half shell deliciously fresh. Sautéed soft shell crabs nice size but bland. Also had stuffed shrimp which were small shrimp with a ball of breadcrumbs covering the small shrimp. As a cook I know the size of shrimp..disappointed. These were not even 16/20 size. The baked potato was a steamed dried up old potato that clearly was done maybe this morning because it was grey inside & the potato skin was awfully rubbery. Also the food was not one bit hot-not even warm. There has to be a better way to keep the food warm..other restaurants do it..this should be looked into-the fish is fresh..if take out is available..improvement is needed & that is my reason for 2 stars..I have gone back even after lukewarm food..not sure we will be taking out anytime soon. read more

The front of the store is an actual fish store and hidden in the back almost like a Hidden gem is the restaurant. Couple times I've come a place is packed. There's only maybe 10 tables. I ate there tonight, been a customer there for 20 plus years Service was the worst, you get better service at Mc Donald's and there was only 2 customers in the dinning room, Food was really not what it usually is. I stopped by the store to pick up a gift card for my father in laws birthday. A super friendly man come up and asked me if I needed help. I said that the young lady was helping me but i was contemplating getting something for myself for lunch for the ride home but couldn't decide. The young lady came up and rang me up for the gift card. The man returned to the counter and dropped off a lunch bag . He said enjoy, no one should ever go hungry. He gave me an order of shrimp with sauce for free!!! It's always comforting to see that there are still good hearted people in the world. Fantastic service. Everything is always fresh here. We do takeout at least twice per month. My kids love the steamers and I'm a big fan of their fresh fish. The place is clean, never smells and the staff is very helpful. They also prepare Italian dishes which are incredible. I've sat in the back at the table service restaurant a few times and it's decorated really nicely and the wait staff is great. read more

The fish store may be an excellent place to purchase fish, but their cooked fish is terrible. yesterday I dropped in and bought the bucket of fish dinner with a small cup of Manhattan clam chowder. The cup of soup was actually a cup of diced carrots which were hiding 2 tiny pieces of what I could only assume were the actual clams. In addition were fried clam strips that could have been mistaken for rubber bands except that rubber bands would have been more appetizing. the other 2 fish were Cod and Cat fish. These were both over cooked and the taste of the fish was over shadowed by the burnt breading and the flavor of burnt oil. obviously the oil was long due for a change. If I didn`t live a distance away, I would have brought it back. It would appear there is no quality control on what they send home with customers. read more
