Hostess was awesome. Downhill from there 40 min for drinks. 1hr 20 min for apps. Dinner came out after almost 2 hours. Half of it was wrong. Burgers were inedible. No sauces. Which would have been no problem but tell us before we order 3 burgers. Overall server and hostess was good everything was awful would never come back. Restaurant sucks. Menu was shitty. Would never recommend. read more

This is a true escape to fine dining in the most unique atmosphere. Service and food are top shelf, as is the setting.

Made a reservation for a big party. And all I can say is This place is a total dissapointment. We did not believe we would have to wait two hours for food. It's unreal. The service is horrible. subpar. Waitress begins on a Monday night. We have no chicken wings. No steak. The choices continue to disappoint. They even brought the check before we finished eating. So bad we got pizza from across the street and ate it while waiting. read more

The place was almost empty on Friday afternoon, but they wouldn't allow us to sit in a cooler area out of the sun because of happy hour drink rules, even though our large party only had one happy hour drink. Server acted like we were bothering her. The bathroom smelled of urine and was dirty. Skip this place. read more

Great food, service and staff! Scott was a great mgr, stopped over checking on all, Vladimir a great waiter.

This place definitely has the best food out of all of the places to eat on ocean beach. They're always consistent... usually I'll do a burger or steak frites before a long night of drinking... ugh the steak frites was so good this time ! I actually split it with my lil honey man and I thought it was good enough for the both of us. Haven't been here in a few years but since returning my last stay; I thought it was better than I remembered. Great spot right on the water with outdoor seating and indoor if you prefer but you for sure, will see your desired su read more

Pass on the chicken sandwich. I have been coming out to Fire Island for years and this place has changed. The food is not up the standards. I poured my own water. I poured my own bottle of wine. I still left a generous tip. We'll never go back. They should have taken the sandwich off the check! read more

I have been here twice, each time for lunch while visiting a friend on Fire Island for the day. Great drinks and lovely ambiance. The oysters were a disappointment. So tiny and ridiculously expensive for the puny size of each oyster. The salad was boring. Beautiful location but I walked out of there still hungry and feeling ripped off by what I spent for a lunch of tiny, expensive oysters and an uninspired salad. read more

We chose the Hideaway because of its location along the beautiful bayside setting. The restaurant has an upscale beachy dining room appearance. Their menu has everything one would expect from a French bistro to an American cuisine. We were a large family group that originally were intending to dine outdoors by the bayside but chose inside the dining room since it was a windy and very warm late afternoon day. Although we chose to dine indoors, we still had bayside water views and pleasing fresh air coming into the open dining room. From what I read, their signature dishes include seafood pasta, the tequila lime ribs, lobster roll, and their burger. My choice was the Jerk Rubbed Tuna which was in an herb salad and smoked scotch bonnet sauce. The dish was particularly good. The service was hectic at first, but I was guessing it could have been from the limited staff working at the time. But we were in no rush, and we very much were enjoying the comfortable relaxing bayside views along with our drinks The Hideaway has undoubtedly become one of my favorite Fire Island restaurants and I am very much looking forward to next season when we dine here again, but outdoors next time. read more

Disappointing. Was a favorite. 5 people. Very limited menu no specials on a Friday nite. 3 of us ordered the $41 fluke was just two pieces of 2 OZ each. Underneath was 5 Asparagus stalks. No bread. Nothing else. Left hungry. Taste was good, but come on $400 for 5 and 3 were still hungry. They gotta fix this. read more

So I just finished my meal and I literally could not wait to Yelp! about it. Everything was absolutely perfect. Please do yourself a favor and repeat our entire order. You will not be disappointed. Spicy margs. Stuffed shrimp baked clams (app). Seared Tilefish and Pork Milanese (entree's). And the PORK FRIED RICE :) If I had room, I would have also had the Loaded Baked Potato (but I'll save that for next time). Service was amazing. Ambiance was amazing. We will be back every time we visit Fire Island. Thank you for everything!!! read more

The service was good, the view was beautiful, it took a long time for the meal. I ordered a burger Medium to medium rare. It showed up well-done. Not a drop of pink when cut open. I sent it back. The next burger was the same, not even pink. 3rd times a charm? Not really. It had a little pink. While the server, who was lovely kept apologizing, we assured him it was not his fault, and really a manager should be stopping by at this point. Then out came Zack. Apparently both manager and Chef, hands on hips, with attitude saying "What can I do for you?" We started to tell him about the burgers, he cut us off, insisting the second burger was a perfect medium, arguing about it when we said it was well-done, became nasty, said I don't. care I'll take it off the bill, and turned and walked away with his obnoxious attitude. Someone needs to explain to Zack what hospitality means. Taking an item off the bill, but doing so with an attitude and being obnoxious to your customers, is not how you handle a situation where the customer did not need to leave feeling compelled to write a poor review. He clearly is not educated in his own field. He should go read "Unreasonable Hospitality" read more

Great location - food is good - service needs a little help as staffing seems to be an issue

Mixed bag this summer, as to last year when I gave it 5 stars. The chef this year is Chef Matt, his food delivers, but the bartender can't keep up with the flow - the servers brought our cocktails at the same time as our entrees, also found attention from serving people less than it might be, the GM had to come out and check up on us. Two visits the first week out here, I may go back later, but not as super keen as before. read more

Docked our boat and saved $40 (thankfully) bc the food was terrible. That's all I'll say. If you are headed to ocean beach go somewhere else. 4 tables only outside and we waited a very long time for food. If you love the taste of scallions you will like the lobster roll. If you like burnt chicken order the crispy chicken sandwich. Sorry. I know times are not great for restaurants but what a waste of $140. Wait - the fries were good. read more

***** New Ownership May 2018! Had the most amazing dinner here I highly recommend it. This is my first time to Fire Island so I'm new to this scene. Started off with the shrimp toast, fresh tuna egg rolls & steamers. The duck with sweet-tart cherries on a sweet pot. mash was incredible. Tuna steak..thick cut and so fresh. The homemade portobello ravioli with pesto knocked it outta the park. Finished off with Banana cheese cake. Spoke with the owner at dinner she is so nice and accommodating. This is Hideaway's first summer under new management. Kudos to the Chef he is phenomenal, works in Saint Croix in the winter and now Hideaway in the summer. We loved our dinner so much we came back for lunch today..tuna tacos, shrimp crepe was ridiculous good, skirt steak au jus was on fresh crispy toasted bread/baguette. Great experience! read more

the hideaway has new ownership and a new chef in town! head chef zachary rude is bringing his culinary expertise to ocean beach. if you're a fan of verde kitchen and cocktails in bay shore, or bakuto ramen bar in lindenhurst, take your family and friends for a ferry ride and come relax and enjoy the scenery accompanied by a wonderful meal and cocktails at the hideaway. with instagram-worthy sunsets and tranquil ocean views, the hideaway is the perfect summer retreat. chef rude has a fully new menu boasting fresh and local fish and shellfish which you will find with items like the whole fish of the day and the oyster tower. there are daily baked breads, mouthwatering beef and poultry options prepared with the highest quality and sustainably chosen meat options available, plus delicious accompaniments to share like duck mofongo or a baked potato you can top with lobster! the hideaway also has classic fire island cocktails like rocket fuel and the zippy cooler, as well as a fine wine selection for celebrating any occasion. the staff are also some of the most welcoming and accommodating people I've encountered in the restaurant industry; they truly have a passion for food and providing a memorable experience for their guests. I would highly recommend stopping by the hideaway to try their new menu, and I would encourage you to take the trip to ocean beach if you aren't a local to experience what a treat it is! It's probably no shock to most people that you're paying top dollar to be eating/drinking anywhere on Fire Island. Hideaway is OK if you keep this in mind and ignore the pretty mediocre food. But it's not about the food. It's all about the view! This is to say, if you can't sit outside overlooking the water, go elsewhere because there's nothing special about Hideaway's interior (nor its food). My group arrived via boat on a Monday night and the place wasn't busy, but every seat outside was taken, so I can only imagine the weekend mayhem! In fact, you probably couldn't pay me to come out here on a weekend. We gave in our name and came back in a half hour to the perfect bayside table. A perusal of the menu meant that I had to ask our waitress to speak to the kitchen because I was immediately met with a blank stare when I asked about vegan options (the guy who docked our boat told us that they would be able to accommodate us. Props to him for being helpful!) I had a pretty nice time here considering the fact that I had to order "the tuna, without the tuna" which amounted to a small pile of vermicelli noodles pan fried with a few mushrooms. They took off 10 dollars for the lack of tuna, but this plate of food under no circumstances warranted the 28 dollar price tag. I'm OK with paying for an experience. If I wasn't, I'd grant this place one or two stars and tell you to avoid it. The experience is totally worth it, though not on a weekend unless you want to be a part of some tired beach crowd "scene." On a quiet weekend night, however, it was pretty spectacular to sit outside on the water underneath a dark summer sky ignoring the fact that I had a plate of tuna without the tuna in front of me. Pro tip: If you dock your boat here, they'll waive the fee and the kid who works this dock is pretty cool, so make sure you tip him! read more

Go straight for the lobster roll! It's their speciality and the only thing on the menu that will fill you up. While the fish tacos and cold ramen are decent, the portion size fails to even quench hunger for an hour. So use them as sides. The ever so famous Rocket Fuel is perfectly blended, but the mojito, ice tea and ice coffee fail on all accounts. Your better off having a straight drink or water. Seating on the outside is ideal but the inside gives you a break from the heat with an equally amazing view. Came here during the day (all ages) and night (40s and up). read more

Food is amazing this season! All new menu is killer. Sandcity on Fire Island I'm in heaven! L

Find somewhere else! Went in yesterday with a group so (18% tip is added), it looked fantasic, with it's uneven floors. I really thought at first glance this could be a great regular place to visit, then... Service was rude, not manhattan rude, but "I'm trying to go home, rude" it was 6pm ish... Drinks were disappointing; Rum punch was just mixer and rum, with some coconut rum as well... Blahhhh.. White Sangria, not that I tasted it, looked fantastic, but all those drinking it said it was poor. The waitress must have known, she didn't come back to offer more drinks or even water. Food: NE Clam Chowder, very salty, no clams, loads of fish bones. Waitress looked at me in horror when I asked for crackers. "we don't do crackers, we have bread"? Was she trying to be stuck up?.. She brought the Stale Bread once the soup was finished. Pork Chops were so sweet... You know what, My review just stops here. So glad someone told the waitress to split the checks, 18% went poof with shocking service. This place is to be avoided! read more

Was there this evening, very friendly service, great view, oh yeah, and the food was delicious too. Had the stuffed clams and grilled calamari. Both terrific. I had the tuna on a bed of rice noodles, tiny mushrooms and a tasty sauce under the noodles. AND, bottles of wine were half price! My friends had the mussels and short rib appetizers as their entre and they thought both were great. Dessert was a little disappointing in comparison to the rest of the meal, but overall a definite winner. I will certainly be back. read more

It was my birthday. I really enjoyed my visit. The bartender did not make the mojito well. My friend had to send it back. The waiter made us a house cocktail instead. I tried the lobster mac and cheese. I think a whole lobster was in it. Loved it The crab cake was delicious. As for the view....if you are an ocean person you would enjoy every moment. Definitely will try it again and will even stay at the hotel. read more

Given our experience this first time, the place is way overpriced, considering both the food and the service. They seem to enjoy gaslighting their guests. First, the check-in person insisted that our reservation had been a half hour earlier, and she was unpleasant about it despite three of us saying we were there when my husband called for a table.Later, the waiter acted like I had ordered rice when I nicely informed him I'd asked for mashed potatoes. He was nice about it and generally did a good job, but by then I was just weirded out. This place is far too expensive for customers to be treated this way. Oh, a lot of the food was mediocre. The stuffed flounder and shrimp linguini were good; everything else was blah. read more

Delish! Roasted Tile fish, focaccia bread, firecracker clams, baked clams! Gorgeous views, great staff! Can't wait to go back!

One of the worst lobster rolls I've ever had....and the french fries were inedible. They were obviously frozen, and not crisp, although they had plenty of salt on them. One member of our party asked for salad instead of the fries, and was given a modest salad that was not bigger or better than the salad garnish that came with everyone else's lunch. So, Hideaway saved on the fries and gave no actual substitute. Absolutely never again. read more

Would not recommend nor will we be back. Initially host asked if we had reservation upon walking in and we said no do we need one as no one was there except one other couple. He then brought us to back deck table. Horrible service!!!! Guy brought out drink order and we took one sip and said we prefer to have another as does not taste good. Server said sorry this has happened before but nothing I can do. If people have not liked drinks before then something is going on with bartender. You either bring new drink or do not charge but neither were done. On to dinner had tuna tartare tacos. Hardly any tuna but mostly mayo sauce. Avocado looks like it came out of squeeze bag. Food not good thus explaining only one other couple eating dinner in entire place on a Saturday night. Pricey food and drinks for poor quality. We were hoping for better experience as it is right on water view. read more

We came here for a 40th birthday celebration dinner. The people could not be bothered with us. The waiter was apparently having a "bad day". We sat at our table for 30 Minutes and no one came over to us. The manager could not be bothered and could care less about our experience. When we expressed our concerns and voiced we were going to leave, she said "okay, thank you". What a terrible experience for nine women away for a few days on fire island looking for a good meal. read more

How this has 3 1/2 stars is baffling to me. I used to be an OB regular and this was--and as of a few days ago, still is--the most consistent and creative restaurant on OB. Not to mention delicious. Chris Hunter ably helms the kitchen (as well as gives lemon verbena to customers dining outside being bothered by pesky insects) and tuns out delicious seafood, as well as non-seafood dishes. It's understated, has great outdoor seating, and possibly the best mac-n-cheese with crumbly blue cheese ever. Yes, you do want a zippy cooler or the 5-rum punch which packs its own punch and is well worth it. In fact, there isn't a bad drink on the cocktail menu. Yes, it's expensive, but so is everything out there. And unlike some of the others, it's totally worth it. I don't have a bad thing to say about it, except that it's really far from us, sadly. read more
