Just returned from a PHENOMENAL dinner at Hideaway! We were warmly greeted and promptly seated by the host. Our server was welcoming and attentive. Our biggest problem was deciding what to order! My husband and I were torn between 3 appetizers, 2 salads, and 5 entrees. It took us a while to strategize our order to maximize tasting as much as we could! We chose the Clams Casino apprizer, which was straight up succulent. TBH, clams aren't my favorite, but I got these because my husband wanted them. Yowza, they were amazing!!! I have never wanted to scrape the clamshell clean before. I'm not a big bacon fan either, but the combo was pretty phenomenal. Mmmmm! We then shared pan seared scallops on a bed of heavenly lobster risotto, as well as a special - pan seared halibut. Both were prepared to perfection and were absolutely delicious. As a side, we ordered grilled asparagus, which was plump, tasty, and grilled to perfection. This is my favorite restaurant in Ocean Beach! Fresh and delicious food, good choices for vegetarians, friendly and helpful service, and a nice pacing to the service (ideal amount of time between appetizers and entrees). Con Artists. I don't post negative reviews but after I complained about the food & drink. The waitress tried to convince us that we don't know how drinks are made. After complaining that the Zippy (seltzer and cranberry with Bacardi rum) was 3/4 ice and a drop of alcohol. (We are mixologists and own a restaurant in Cali) she refused to take the drink back nor replace it and tried to convince us that more than half the glass was filled with Bacardi. but when the CAUCASIAN customer next to us complained about similar problem and the same waitress accommodated them instantly. I don't recommend this place to anyone not even my worst enemy. Also charged us service fee for over 5 which wasn't listed anywhere on the menus. I've never seen such an egregious act of discrimination from an establishment in NY. read more

The food is absolutely delicious - every bite was sensational - and the place is beautiful, I can't wait to go back! I'm a foodie and to me, The Hideaway is by far the best restaurant on Fire Island. We had an amazing birthday dinner on Friday 7.16 - the whole black sea bass, fried rice, superb baked clams, great wine - all at a table next to the open-air windows overlooking the bay. Swing and a miss. Great view, nice staff and all downhill from there. Four dinner orders placed at the same time...three came out late and the last one much later. In the restaurant business for a long time, and this is inexcusable. And the missing entrée arrives 10 minutes after the other three were told to " don't wait for me, eat" many times, it arrives and was brutally over cooked. You have a great opportunity to create something amazing here in Ocean Beach. Put some candles on the table at night so people can see what they are eating, and figure out a better way to manage the food delivery portion of your business. read more

great food, the smashed potatoes were AMAZING. never had something so delicious. the duck mofongo brought me back to my home country puerto rico with a little bit of a twist, i loved it. it's a pretty pricey menu but i understand as it's a seasonal restaurant and taxes for places on the water must be crazy. everyone was super friendly, the service was great although a little slow bringing out the food. i have massive respect for the bussers as i was once one myself and they were really busting their asses. the host was a little condescending so that wasn't too pleasant but it's all good, the food made up for it. if not for the food, the view was worth every bit of the stay. will for sure come back when i come back to OB, loved it!! read more

Writing this review is disheartening for a variety of reasons. For one, I grew up at the Hideaway and at the other Ocean Beach restaurants. Spending summer after summer roaming the streets and pathways of Ocean Beach, my family could always rely on a non-Michaels pizza meal at the Hideaway. Which is why it saddens me to say that I have to write this review on behalf of my moms terrible experience there last weekend. She took a group of friends to Fire Island for the weekend and charged herself with showing them the in's and out's of our beloved beach town. Of course she wanted to share with them one of our favorite restaurant spots on the first night of their stay, so off to the Hideaway they went. Unfortunately this trip only led to empty bellies and disappointment. Let me sum it up- over priced, under-portioned, snobby food that left you wanting that late night slice across the walk. Over $33 for 3 scallops and some "micro-greens", please. This isn't Manhattan, get over yourself. Not to mention that one of the scallops was essentially inedible so you're talking over $33 for TWO scallops. Don't get my momma started on her lobster roll app. The Island Mermaid has the best deal in town and unfortunately led my mom to believe that all of OB's outdoor eatery's have the same level of expectation. Not. For $23 she got one 3-inch roll with maybeeeee a claw of lobster meat inside. Again, get over yourself. No one orders a lobster bite. They order lobster rolls. And for that price I expect at least a decent brioche bun! I digress. Bottom line, we're disappointed. Big money for small portions and mediocre food at best. I am hopeful that this restaurant will go back to its former glory in my mind- wonderful food, great service, and a beautiful backdrop. Please oh please. read more

So this past Friday evening myself and some close friends were looking for a special restaurant to celebrate my birthday and thankfully we decided to go to the Hideaway restaurant in Ocean Beach. From the moment we walked in we were treated not as guests but as family. We were a large party but we were able to be accommodated while maintaining appropriate social distancing. Our evening started with cocktails (highly recommend "the local", refreshing and delicious!), followed by a mouth watering combination of small plate appetizers (try the Asian Ribs-amazing) and entrees (the grilled skirt steak and roasted duck were fantastic). The entire staff (special shout out to Mary Ellen and Meg) took care of us and made my night even more special. Be aware they have a bouncer if you dont leave in 2 hours . I wished I had seen the reviews before I went for Dinner here. This restaurant gives a vibe of fine dining and makes you feel relaxed but apparently you can only sit here for 2 hours max so if you are on a vacation and want to chill and experience hospitality here you will be outta luck. We went there for dinner without reservation so we accepted the table indoor knowing that all outdoor tables were reserved so it was totally fine , we know how things work very well , we frequently go to the fire island and have dined at many restaurants but dint expect what followed. we ordered so many things to try and 2 bottles of wine for 2 people , so we wanted to pace out and order the entree but guess what a guy who acted like a bouncer with the loose t-shirt approached us to tell there is a reservation on that table so he is gonna need the table soon. (Everybody looked super friendly and professional but not this guy) , he is probably the manager / owner . The approach was absolutely horrendous , it sounded me like you are on my property and I want that table soon , I dont care what your plans are but thats what I want . There were no options provided like moving to another table or bar , he simply doesnt have people's skills and dint belong to FOH. Its not like we were there for 3 hours , we ordered the 2nd bottle of wine after an hour and half of getting there and soon he approach us telling that they have the 2 Hrs condition posted outside, probably he has some terms and condition listed somewhere else I am not aware about. I understand they need to accommodate as many as people possible but I would expect them they show the right approach and hospitality. That guy totally brought his entire team down , ruined our experience, I am still trying to figure out the reason for the nasty approach, we were nothing but very respectful to everybody but he certainly took us for granted , I dont want to get to the " R" word but I certainly felt like second class citizen. He was ready to give us seats at the bar after my GF suggested that but it was too late as this guy who claims to have 20 Yrs experience couldn't come with it or simply dint care , I dont know what kind of experience he has but certainly not hospitality experience . He probably has experience as a bouncer or frying chicken in the kitchen. read more

So disappointing! Four of us returned to FI for a day and evening of nostalgia. As we were deciding which restaurant to go to we met an old friend outside Hideaway who highly recommended it. We were looking forward to having a phenomenal meal. Starting with drinks: Riesling was dryer than expected, asked server to suggest something sweet. He recommended a cocktail with fresh watermelon juice and cucumber vodka. Ugh! My rocket fuel needed additional pineapple juice and still fell far short of CJ's drinks. Appetizer: Shrimp cocktail was best part of meal. Huge shrimp. Unfortunately, the scallop entree was twice the price and half the size. Entrees: $48 Short ribs were dry and the polenta was presented more like grits as it was combined with spinach. I don't eat seafood and am always fine with a chicken dish at seafood restaurants. I got Roast chicken, with crispy skin (it wasn't), smashed potatoes and asparagus. This was the blandest meal I've ever had and I had to ask the server to bring salt & pepper to season it myself. The Yellowfin Tuna also tasted bland. One of my party commented it was like eating off the diabetic menu in a hospital. Our server Rich was attentive at first but bristled at the first complaint. When a customer tries to explain that the meal is disappointing, there is no need to hear he was an executive chef in the past and a partner in a restaurant in CA. And when we asked to speak to a manager, he didn't need to share that he "has shares" in the restaurant. I'm ordinarily a little timid about complaining about unsatisfactory meals, but the blandness (especially considering the cost) and the condescending attitude of Rich prompted me to write this review. We spoke to one of the managers who was very gracious and professional. She removed the $38 scallops entree from our bill. We had such a great day at beach and could have gone to any one of our favorite restaurants in OB, instead we left Hideaway with a sour taste. Other friends we bumped in to were surprised by our experience so maybe this was an off night, but we will definitely not be returning. read more

"Must Go To" Place while on Ocean Beach - Beautiful Water Views and Great Food! We stopped in for dinner and it was just what we were looking for, a fun restaurant right on the water, and yes, they really do have a Million Dollar View. As we ate, we watched the the sunset on their large deck. Highly recommended to start with are the tuna tartare wontons and the calamari with a sweet chili sauce. The scallops with lobster risotto was truly delicious as with the seared tuna. We ordered the truffle fries as a side and they were very tasty, too. Planning on coming back again during our vacation. While every other bar is filled with 20-yr old 'bro's' anytime after 9pm, this is one place where you can find solace on FI. The bar area is small and usually filled with older locals, but once you grab your drink feel free to walk outside and enjoy a relatively empty outdoor area. With great views of the bay, classic rock blaring from inside and (for FI) cheap drinks, this is by far my favorite place to head out for a night where you'd like to chat. Stay away from here!!!!!Normally I don't write bad reviews but in this case I have to.... I was on a lovely vacation and stopped for my the traditional rocket fuel and it was an epic fail. The bartender James was so nasty and had no clue how to make drinks I could have made one better with water. Good food by fire island standards. The "local" cocktail was tasty, cucumber vodka and fresh watermelon juice. I had the muscles with pork belly and jalapeño wine sauce. The muscles were good but the pork belly really should have been crispy and not poached in the broth. My husband had the bacon lobster roll which was okay not the best. Thick hunks of lobster but you could tell it had just been thawed out, didn't taste fresh and definitely Canadian lobster. The rosemary fries were the standout of the meal. Low quality food: My asparagus were thick and undercooked, partly inedible. Companion couldn't find the lobster in the lobster risotto. My $12 Caesar salad was about 50 cents of underdressed romaine lettuce with minimal cheese or croutons. My companions had nothing nice to say about the scallops. A number of us left hungry due to small portions. The bill was exorbitant, but I understand and expect high prices on Fire Island. I have a bigger problem with such disappointingly low quality. As a long time Fire Islander, I have limited expectations of finding an excellent meal in our sweet little town. All of that changed when the new owners (Rob and Erica) took over. There's no denying that with the beautiful Bayfront setting and a gorgeous sunset everything does seem like a sure fire hit. But the food, the entire meal, is really what clinched it for all of us. We had several appetizers: the thai chili calamari was OUTSTANDING! (I could easily eat it everyday), the tuna tartare tacos were fresh, well seasoned and delicious. The fire cracker clams were great and flavorful and a really nice portion. The Caesar salad was also very good. Then onto the entrees: I had a sea bass special which was absolutely fantastic. The fish was so so fresh, cooked to perfection, the portion size was great and the sides were yummy. A couple of people at the table had the scallops over lobster risotto and RAVED about it. When it came time for dessert, there were more than a couple that we all wanted to try, unfortunately, we all were so full from the apps, entrees, cocktails and wine, we simply had no room for any (our loss, for sure). I will without question return there for dinner, but until that time- you will likely find me there during sunset or for evening cocktails as the location, the staff and the service were all SPOT ON! read more

Wow! My experience here was very different from most of the others I read. A large group of us dined around 8pm on Friday. We were greeted immediately and were told we couldn't be seated outside. While it looked like there was seating, we were told that there would be no tables for a party our large for the rest of the night. No biggie. We sat in a table by a window and there was a nice breeze. I ordered one of their signature dishes, the Tagliatelle with lobster, pork belly, Hen of the Wood mushrooms and some kind of pollen I can't remember. My husband had the ribeye steak, which for the price relative to the other items on the menu and the size of the steak, was actually a good value. The pasta was quite tasty. It was fresh pasta with all the stuff I said earlier. My only complaint and the only reason I did not give Hideaway 5 stars, is because it was quite salty and I LIKE my food salty. So for ME to say it's salty, it's REALLY salty. I always struggle with whether or not I should send something back and I usually don't and just chalk it up to experience. Then I always wish I had at least told the chef so that he/she could correct it. The tagliatelle would have been outrageously good if it had been less salty. The ribeye was cooked perfectly and while it wasn't the BEST ribeye I've ever had, it was still really good. The mushroom puree with the steak was also over salted but flavorful. I didn't mind it as much because I would ordinarily put salt on my steak anyway. The portion size was surprisingly big, which I mentioned before. I would guestimate that it was about 12 oz. My girlfriend had the pastrami spiced tuna, which she said was excellent. My sister had the simple salad and shrimp stuffed clams and she said both were yummy. My friend had the mussels and was pleasantly surprised they came with hand cut fries. It also had plenty of mussel "juice" leftover for sopping up with bread. He gave it 5 stars. Lastly, the seafood bisque. It looked a little more like a soup than a bisque but it was outstanding. It wasn't overly salted like another reviewer wrote. Without hesitation I would go back to Hideaway. I would probably not order the pasta again though or if I did, I'd send it back if it was too salty again. For a group of 7, with the 18% gratuity included, it was $46 a person. By the way, I disagree with Chris R. The rum punch was delicious! read more

Best in OBFI. My wife and I always eat at The Hideaway, and celebrated our wedding anniversary this past Friday: Shared the lobster udon and pork chop specials. This was the best and most memorable meal we've had in some time, so good that we went back again the next night for more lobster udon! Had to update my review-(restaurants Change all the time!) We had a great experience here for my friends 40th. First off the staff was super friendly! Our waitress was so knowledgeable about the menu (which is rare for the beginning of the season) and there were lots of great options. The drink menu was feisty and fun. I got 'the local' which was the right amount of sour and sweet topped with a cucumber but it was light on the booze...however it was tasty. Three out of the four appetizers were 4 star worthy: the corn chowder, the cold seafood platter and the popcorn cooked in lobster and bacon - yep- it's as good as you think towards the bottom (mix it up!) the one appetizer that I highly discourage ordering is the Korean ribs. Tasted like dog food-I had to spit it out (and when I told my husband that he said he wished he did too but didn't want to be rude) totally nasty. The main entrees came-I was thoroughly delighted with the monk fish-and the green sauce was outrageous (could have used a smidge more)...I split this with the tuna dinner and I have to say the tuna was just okay, but definitely NOT sushi grade. The tuna was fresh but kinda chewy - the noodles that accompanied the dish were good. 6 cups of Coffee came out and they were so burnt and disgusting this was the killer for me. Seriously they tasted like yesterday's coffee. We told The waitress and she came out as soon as she could with fresh coffees (but not for everybody??). I had a bite of The cookie ice cream sandwich - it melted my mouth and my heart. Totally amazing! I will never be coming back here. I went here for lunch with my friend and the waitress was HORRIBLE. When we arrived we already knew what we wanted and ordered everything right away. I had ordered the Mac and Chess and my friend order the Manhattan Clam Chowder. We waited 40 flipping minutes for our food and the waitress barely ever came over. I was able to finish my mojito and when I asked for a different drink the waitress told me she would check if they had it and would come back, she never came back. A different server had to ask us if we wanted our check and the hostess had to bring us our check. It was so bad that the people in the table next to us even said something about the fact that we were waiting so freaking long for two plates that were appetizers, it was just so ridiculous. There was also another table who arrive about 10 minutes after us and they got they entire meal and were constantly visited by the waitress before we got our appetizers or were even asked if we were ok. They didn't even make sure we had water, I swear we could of dropped dead at the restaurant and no one would even know. Never again will I go here. read more
