Stopped at Castaway for a midday snack. Oysters were fresh and a good size. Even my friend who doesn't particular enjoy seafood thought they were delicious. We also got the wings and parmesan fries. The BBQ wings were good--saucy and not too small. Fries were just meh. They're just fries and a good shareable but nothing special. The staff is so sweet and accommodating. My friends and I were here a few years back and sat at the corner table outside. Our waitress didn't hesitate to prep the table for us when we requested to sit there again. When I was here a few years back, they had nachos and they were probably the best I've ever had. Been thinking about them ever since. Petition to bring the nachos back! read more

My only gripe is with the wine pours and glassware. This place has the potential to feel upscale, I would suggest that they stop using cheap 4oz goblets that one would expect at a cheap pizza joint. And even more importantly, the pour was tiny and not priced accordingly. I'm guessing the pour was 3oz, 4 at most. A standard pour should be 5 oz. Castaway is well known in certain circles for their clam jam ($1.25 Clams and $1.50 Oysters at happy hour, 4-7 pm), for being a rarity in Ocean Beach in that they are open from March to November, and for being one of the few restaurants in town that doesn't really have great outdoor seating (maybe why they open out of season). Personally, I know them as a place with solid food all around, and exceptionally sweet servers. Whether you're looking for a salad, some seafood (raw or otherwise), something a little meatier (burger, meatloaf, etc.), or just some wings (Mondays they are $.60 apiece) and drinks, Castaway's got it, and they do it pretty well. A couple things to note: 1. The grilled romaine salad is not the Caesar you think it is. It's deconstructed into deliciously seasoned grilled hearts of romaine, with dressing, pickled onions, and croutons on the side (check the photo). I was into it because it tastes good, but it took some work to eat it, so I'm going to use it as an excuse to never order salad again. Unless I'm here, because I did like it. 2. If they've got mahi on the menu, get it. You can get it over a salad, in some tacos...all good. 3. The Castaway fries are supposedly a mix of shoestring, curly, and sweet potato fries. Those are not shoestring fries, and there weren't nearly enough of the other kinds (maybe three sweet potato fries total). And everyone knows curly fries are superior...I would've been happy with a small, seasoned curlies. read more

Tonight we attended Castaway as a party of 8 and had a great time. We missed our favorite waiter we had the privilege of having our last few times here Matthew. Despite this our service was still great. Everybody enjoyed the chicken sandwich which was very big, almost big enough for 2 people, but was excellent. Caeser Salad was a solid 7, wouldn't get it every time, but it was good. Fried rice was a good alternative to fries as a side. Very much enjoyed my lunch the other day at Castaways. Decided to ride and walk in from Robert Moses and after a hot day treat myself to a lunch before heading back. I was immediately seated and provided a bottle of cold water and a menu which was nice. To start off with, I ordered the Fried Calamari. It was nice that on a Thursday afternoon the calamari had a snap to it, was not overly rubbery or overly fried. It a lighter crispy batter so you could taste the calamari itself and not something that was simply "fried". For lunch I had the Blackened Mahi Mahi sandwich with tri color slaw, spicy remoulade and garlic parmesan and truffle fries. It definitely hit the spot and the fish was well grilled without being burned or charred. The seasoning was the right amount to give it that blackened taste while still allowing the fish to shine through. As you can see from the pictures, the fish was of a sizable portion. The service was excellent as I was checked in on but did not have anyone checking over my shoulder every few minutes. I wanted a nice quiet place to sit back and enjoy lunch while catching up on emails and I had exactly that. I would definitely return. read more

Went because of the reviews only to realize they were super old. No rocket fuel, no daiquiris at all just beers and cocktails. Next issue came upon ordering appetizers they had a hand written sign showing Ahi Poke as daily special appetizer, wasn't available that day at all. Ordered Calamari, all were over cooked which isn't too uncommon. The uncommon part was the flavor was very off to the point of being soiled. Kale salad ordered with grilled salmon, no mention of teriyaki yet it was slathered in the sauce. Blackened Mahi sandwich came 10+ min after the salad was delivered to the table. The fish was way over cooked to rubber like levels on top of being over killed with seasoning. Only item finished from the two of us eating was the truffle fries. I spent the day at the beach on Fire Island with some friends and decided to stop in here and eat after we soaked in some rays. Castaway had some pretty good bar food to my surprise. I say my surprise because most of the restaurants on fire island do not have good reviews. To start we had some buffalo wings, oysters and parmesan truffle fries. For entrees we had the fried chicken sandwich (definitely recommend), fish tacos and the cheeseburger w/ fries. Everything was pretty solid with a special mention like I said for the chicken sandwich. I would also like to add that out waiter was extremely nice and attentive, I think his name was Remy. He made our dinner that much better! It's too bad I won't be coming back to Fire Island ever again otherwise I would had came back here but that's a whole different review unrelated to Castaway! We stumbled into this restaurant bar for lunch and drinks. The restaurant is located close to the Ferry on Fire Island. It's a very casual restaurant bar with predictable food & seafood, plus they have a full bar with Flat Screens. We ordered drinks and lots of food and I must say we had quite a large bill. But I blame that mostly on my family who just could not avoid ordering more than one martini. The burgers were meaty and good along with the salads. We chose The Castaways because we could bring our dog inside. (Not a good reason.). My Rocket Fuel (THE drink of Fire Island) wasn't great (and it was $14.00!) and I was a bit concerned, but unnecessarily so. The Castaways Dip that we split was amazing. The beef was tender, medium-rare (as we ordered it), and the rosemary panini bread was very flavorful. The fries were crisp and flavorful (my ketchup went untouched). Amazing!!! Had the Chicken Sandwich with Truffle Fries and a Zippy. The sandwich was HUGE. It was fried with what tasted like panko bread crumbs and was extremely filling. Had the mahi sandwich and it was tasty. the fries are atypical in that they are a mix of fry types (eg, potato, regular, seasoned). I think I prefer something more uniform as it seems a bit messy and kind of after thought-ish. maybe I got a bad batch with lots of short ends. service was okay, could be a bit more attentive. waitress seemed to be running around everywhere (maybe she was the only person officially waiting tables). read more

If i could put no stars i would. I have a severe nut and sesame allergy that requires me to carry an epi pen. I told the wait staff and the kitchen 3 times as well as called there to confirm and spoke to one of the chefs. I asked what to order and i ordered the steak, potatos and broccoli which i was reassured and told was safe. They came back half way and said they are switching out the potatoes for regular fries cause it was not safe. Fine im glad they said something. Food comes and they used the same teriyaki broccoli they use with sesame in the salmon lomain which has sesame all over it and was in my food. Like how incompetent are you as a chef or a business? You could kill someone. Very disappointed in this restaurant. If you have someone with food allergies i recommend maybe telling them 4 times before you order. Will never be going back. i live in Manhattan and have spent all my summers on Fire Island. Because I live alone I eat almost all my meals out and this is the first time I am writing a Yelp review. I understand that Fire Island dining can be more "casual" than NYC restaurants and I'm totally ok with that. My experience at Castaway tonight was awful. First, we sat at the bar for a drink while our table was being cleared (even though the restaurant was less than half full). The woman tending bar was involved in a personal conversation with the only two other people at the bar and totally ignored us for five minutes. We were actually joking with each other that we must be invisible because she clearly wasn't seeing us. We eventually got our drinks and were seated and eventually a waiter did come to take our order (and telling us the 3 or 4 menu items thay had run out of) . We ordered drinks and apps and asked him to come back for entree orders. We also asked for water, he dropped a bottle in the middle of the table without bothering to pour it and couldn't seem to get away fast enough, though clearly not because he was busy because remember the place was less han half full. Shortly after a runner brought out the wrong food that was apparently intended for a different table, our apps came out later. So we sat there waiting for the waiter to come back for our entree order but he was too busy doing shots with some (over served) girls at the bar After about 30 minutes we decided to just give up so when the waiter came back (when he was done with his shots at the bar) to say "hey, how are tings here guys?" We told him that since he never bothered to come for our entree orders he could just bring us the check for our drinks and mediocre apps. We left there to find another place in town to have a decent meal. It's interesting to note here that almost every other place had a significant wait for a table but Castaway was more than half empty because it is so terrible. read more

Sad and disappointed - the OG castaway in the original location was the highlight of our trips to fire island, specifically the happy hour. On our first trip to the new location the place lost its authenticity, the oysters & clams casino/Rockefeller just bad...the kicker being the bartender, inattentive and could care less, we left with 20 uneaten oysters to which she did not acknowledge. Best oyster happy hour in Ocean Beach! We went bar hopping on a rainy day and this bar was the light in our tunnel. We had the buffalo fried oysters which were absolutely amazing. We also had raw oysters and drank dark and stormys which were on the happy hour menu with a limited selection of beers. Our group liked it so much that we went back the next day before we got on the return ferry. We also tried the oyster rockefeller which wasn't my thing (too much stuff on the oyster for me but it was classically prepared and good). It was taco Tuesday that day as well and we ran out of time so didn't get to order but I saw them and they looked awesome. We will definitely be back! Castaway is a solid place to grab a quick bite for a decent price in OB. Good eats are the veggie panini, smokehouse turkey panini, and a great quesadilla. Libation-wise go for a rum punch or a sweet tea vodka lemonade. Their happy hour is cleverly named 'Clam Jam' (see pic for info) which saves you a couple bucks on an order of oysters and gets ya 2 for 1 Miller Lites. Night life is weak and there is no view, so grab a quick bite and then hit the beach! Boss move. read more

We came here for the raw bar happy hour (4-7 every day). Ordered oysters on the half shell, clams casino, oysters Rockefeller, and buffalo fried oysters, as well as an order of calamari (not in the HH menu). The raw bar items were delicious! I liked the oysters on the half shell so much I ordered another round of them. The taste was perfect and succulent and the elixir left in the oyster after shucking married perfectly with a squeeze of lemon and two lashes of Tabasco. So delicious!!!!! The clams casino were great tasting, as were the oysters Rockefeller. The buffalo oysters were good as well! The regular order of calamari was extremely disappointing, not a lot of flavor from the squid or the breading, kind of bland even with their dipping sauce. Overall a good experience and I certainly will go back for the HH raw bar again. And I'd go back and try their entrees as well, I'd just avoid the calamari next time. read more

So simple, a Tanqueray & tonic, pear and candied walnut salad and a burger with a mixture of sweet potato and regular fries. Here's the thing, each dish was wonderful. Maybe it is OB lull kicking in, but my wife and I found our selves saying,"best pear salad ever" then " best hamburger ever" and the fries were just perfect! The pear salad was a mix of fresh crisp greens with slices of pear and apple, crumbled Gorgonzola cheese, candied pecans,lightly dressed with magical fried onion straw on top. The burger was perfectly cooked with a bit of charr on the outside and perfect medium rare inside served on a sweet egg bun. Pickles, lettuce and tomato were standing by for customization. The side of fries was a mixture of sweet potato and regular fries. Crispy, light, thin, so tasty! We chose to sit on the stools facing the outside with the windows wide open this is THE place to people watch the casual vacationers passing by. It also allows the passerby to feast their eyes on the beautiful plate of food being served. Our terrific waitress even served us by stepping outside and placing our plates in front of us rather than reaching over our shoulders. What a great gem of a place with everything so simple yet so delicious! 5 stars for this OB casual and wonderful restaurant! We ordered: Dozen raw oysters - excellent fresh Blue Points from Virginia Fish and chips - two large battered filets of cod, over "castaway fries" which are a mix of vurly, sweet potato, and steak cut fries Little Havana panini - a generous 12 inch sandwich with thick cuts of ham and crisped well, also with castaway fries Ginger beer Everything was made well, all things considered, and the service was young, but put together. Played hookie from work on a Monday and we took a trip out the Ocean Beach. Found this cute spot right on Bay Walk and stopped in for a bite and we weren't disappointed! We started with the Oysters Rockerfeller, came out warm and delicious. My husband had the Mahi burger, he liked the bun and the fish tasted fresh of the grill. The variety in the castaway fries was delish, perfect for when you can't decide whether you want a sweet potato fry or curly! Stopped by Castaways for some dinner on Tuesday evening with my boyfriend. We both got the fried chicken sandwich and a side of truffle fries, which were good! Although the food took a while to come out, we really appreciated the waitresses' attentiveness. I wish we would have gotten her name, she was a tall brunette. She even recommended we try out the ice cream place she used to work at which was a 10/10. I would love to explore the other restaurants in ocean beach but will for sure be returning here, as it is a nice staple for trips to fire island. read more

Went here as a group of 4. The location and setup of this bar is really nice. They have good seating and good ambiance. They also have good beers on tap. Not many bars in FI have beers on tap, especially Ocean Beach. We specifically enjoyed the Blonde Ambition beer. We just weren't happy with the service. Our server did not bring or offer us water. He kept apologizing every time he brought us our food, but made no attempts to correct what he was doing wrong. And the restaurant wasn't even that busy! We even asked for water, but never got it in the end and we just walked off. Regarding food.. it's just OK. We got the Chicken Tenders (OK), Mahi Tacos (OK, but Salty) and a Veg Panini (OK, a bit greasy to our liking)... Walking around the island we found a few better options. Great little restaurant in Ocean Beach. Compared to the neighboring restaurants, Castaways is a moderately priced dining experience that offers happy hour until 7pm. I wouldn't suggest the ribs unless your appetite is as big as a mouse's, but the mahi mahi burger and salad were really large and filling. For a small bar/restaurant, the food is excellent! I had to come back twice more for the best French Dip I've ever had - any where - (ordered without the mushrooms). The dip is herby and the sandwich is made with marinaded skirt steak on the perfect bread. The fries were cooked perfectly. My fiance got the oysters which were good quality but their special dip (some kind of frozen pink lemonade) was not to his taste, so he got cocktail sauce. Our friends got the chicken tenders and salad which were better than standard bar food. We didn't realize that they were open so late, so on our next trip we will stop by at least once for a late-night bite. The feel was very casual, light, airy and easy - a place you want to drop by for a good lunch and drink. The food service was a little slow but, hey, we were on vacation; besides, the food was good enough that it made up for the wait. The bar tender and servers were very friendly and easy going. The drinks choices are pretty good and the prices are average. It was a better deal to buy a bottle of wine than by the glass. It was a cloudy, chilly day at Ocean Beach and playing in the sand was out of the question. So we Yelp'ed some place to eat fresh off the ferry. Here we are! A smaller restaurant with really cool island decor as well as a sweet seating arrangement where you can sit at the open window while looking out at the midway. Very sports bar feel with many TVs hanging over the bar, but it wasn't too loud... yet. Tiff and I started with the Fire Island favorite, "Rocket Fuel" frozen drink which is comprised of Bacardi 151, some form of coconut milk, pineapple juice, amaretto and a dark rum ($14.00 each). Absolutely delicious and of course, decently strong. We then started with their Tuna Tartare appetizer ($13.00) which was truly one of the BEST I've ever had. Piling the tuna with the avocado on top of the wonton chip is like making your own lil' meal that you can have over and over again! We also took advantage of their happy hour deal and I ordered a couple "Clam Casinos" ($1.50 each) and "Oyster Rockefeller" ($2.00 each). It was my first time having both and I'm not a fan of oysters, but the spinach and butter baked into the shell made it was SO GOOD. I'm definitely a fan. The Clam Casino was delicious as well, but I knew I'd need like 38 of them to feel satisfied so I jumped to other food. We split orders of their buffalo wings ($13.00 for 10) and a chicken quesadilla ($12.50). This is where I got disappointed and where they lost a star. The quesadilla was so bare and basic. Literally chicken and cheese, like something from a middle school cafeteria. Do better. The wings were okay as well. Breaded and tossed in what tasted like Frank's Red Hot. So if I come here again, I'll stick tot he oysters, clams and maybe I'll try something else on the menu. The atmosphere alone will make this place worth coming to. 2016 Update. There must have been changes in the kitchen as the food quality has degraded dramatically. I had the Scallops Risotto and they are far from the pics submitted. They have decreased the number of scallops, they have gone to what looks like small canned shrimp, and completely took the corn sauce off the dish. The oyster Rockefeller was saucy and wet, with undercooked oysters. As there are few options it just becomes a what is available excursion.
