The food was amazing, down to the tartar sauce :) I don't know if it was homemade or not. Even the items within the green salad tasted amazingly fresh. My entire party was completely satisfied with the meal. The Crab soup was creamy and delicious - was told it's homemade (nice sized of crab meat). And the haddock was such a large portion I ate half, only to not able to finish the leftover the next day with still so much left - it was fried, lightly battered. The entree included fries along with coleslaw. The coleslaw was very good which can be a hit or miss in most dishes. The restaurant is amply spacious with a large bar area. I don't drink alcohol so can't comment on variety, strong/weak, etc... The ladies room was clean and no wait during lunch time on Saturday. The crab soup was excellent with lots of crab. The Scotch Eggs came with a remoulade that our friends said were the best they have had. My husband says the Scotch Egg, otherwise, was just okay. He said the same about the crab cake. I had a taste of the crab cake and did not like the seasoning or the sauce it was mixed with. My cioppino had a nice flavor. It came with 2 mussels, 2 large scallops, and 2 shrimp, salmon, 2 tiny crab claws, and some other type of fish. My problem was that the dish was probably 70-80 per cent fish. There was too much fish. It took me a while to enter the restaurant. It is so beautiful; I had to take pictures. The parking is plentiful and the walk up to the restaurant is safe (sidewalk) Once inside, I wanted to take a tour - every room was gorgeous. David was our server. He was patient with us; I'd checked out the menu beforehand and he helped us make our final decisions. My grandson who never has opinions one way or the other, thought David was GREAT! (So did I) The food, like I'd read in another review, is indeed heavy while being delicious. Bailey got the Scotch eggs. I'd never heard of them; yummy. The French onion soup could be a meal in itself and the burgers were cooked exactly as we ordered. We were there for lunch; there were lots of tables empty. By the time we were on our way out, the beautiful and evidently very popular restaurant, was filling up. I'm so glad we had found this place while planning our dining and show in York, PA. During my visit and a phone call to The First Post the following Monday, I encountered several employees, each having different jobs there. EVERYONE was exceptional!!!!! read more

Have been here numerous times, and is always a very pleasant experience. Food is phenomenal every time, and always great service. We went this past Sunday for brunch, around 1pm. We both got the Chesapeake Benedict, which was delicious, BUT I was not a huge fan of the 63 degree eggs. A weird texture, but I tend to be a bit pickey. My fiancé on the other hand loved the eggs. The breakfast alcoholic drink prices seem to have gone up a bit, at least by a dollar. It is about $7 for a single mimosa. Cream of crab soup is always delicious. Presentations are always thought out. One of the downsides was that it was very hot in the restaurant, maybe their AC was broken? It was very hot outside so definitely not the best day to have an out of order AC. read more

I requested a Caesar salad with a hard boiled egg. It came with a soft boiled egg. When I asked for hard boiled the manager said no that was the way it came. We have been to First Post many times and have enjoyed all our meals there. The food is fresh, well prepared and generally delish. This past visit was the Sesame Street game of one of these things is not like the other. Really, first time that something just wasn't top notch. The good: our adult kids came to visit and First Post is generally First Choice! We began with the outstanding crab dip. The daughter who'd not yet been to this place ( she should visit more often, right??) said it was the best crab dip she's had, and that's quite a compliment from this woman who travels a bunch. We added the Brussels sprouts as an additional appetizer and that was terrific. Served with cheesy grits, chopped apples and bacon, this is a keeper. The mains: The chicken orichetti is wonderful. Little pasta ears, fresh chunks of melting mozzarella, some spinach and sautéed chicken chunks in a creamy tomato sauce- unbelievably good. I don't know how they do the chicken but it is tender, delicious and juicy. I love this! The caesar salad was superb and the meatloaf dinner was excellent with its beef gravy and barbecue glaze. Super mashed potatoes and broccoli raab. Terrific! The bad: it's the first time one of us ordered ciopino. It was a generous portion with lots of fish, some shrimp and mussels. But the broth was very disappointing. We couldn't taste the fennel, or any of the seasonings. If I'd ordered it I'd probably have sent it back and ordered something else, but, my family members are somewhat nicer than I. It really needed seasonings, so say the four of us. More good: service was excellent as usual. The drinks: Pumpkin drink was well received. Nutty something contained screwball, FrAngelica, and I don't know what else - was exactly as described- very sweet but very strong! The liqueur was overpowering as far as taste goes. Didn't taste anything else. The seasonal ciders were good. So, despite one disappointing meal, we had a lovely dining experience I surely hope the kitchen fixes the ciopino. It's a favorite of mine but I'm glad I hadn't ordered it. Don 't know if we should try it again I wonder if anyone has had it with a different experience. Food was good and staff were professional but ambiance was a bit unwelcoming. We arrived with two kids and had many comments and eye stares/rolls about it. I know, I know, it's frustrating to hear an upset baby, but our infant cried a mere 5 minutes and our toddler was no louder or more annoying than any of the drunks at the bar. Despite having a kids menu, and seeing other kids, the experience was not like anything I've experienced. Fantastic restaurant in York! I do recommend that you call in and make a reservation because there is usually a wait, even on weeknights. Their food is usually excellent. Starting with the freshly baked complimentary bread - beautiful crust with flakes of salt on the outside and warm, soft chewy center. You can keep asking for the bread (which we def do). The only thing that could be better is if they had some whipped or flavored butter to accompany instead of the cold packages but I can't complain too much ;) Appetizers: -Calamari - my favorite. I'm not usually a calamari or marinara person, but theirs is incredibly fresh with a great breading. The lemon aioli and freshly made marinara sauce are to die for too! I am also a fan of the seared tuna -Mini gyro tacos - comes with 3, these are huge and loaded with shoestring Greek fries but they're delicious -Fried Brussel sprouts - I've had better but people usually like this dish! The bottom is pickles -Seared tuna - quite fresh! -Octopus - this is one I personally didn't love. Thought it was small for $18 and I wasn't a fan of the puree and flavors -Crab dip - your standard crab dip, personally I wasn't a fan of the chips it came with but the dip was good! Entrees - the menu items rotate so some may not be there anymore but the pastas are generally amazing: -Crab and corn fettuccine - LOVE this dish, this is my favorite thing to eat here. Sadly not on the fall menu -"Vegetarian pasta" Truffle mushroom gnocchi - very rich but super delicious, having a salad on the side helps -Ciopinno - flavorful seafood stew, def for seafood lovers! It comes with 2 pieces of bread but otherwise is basically a soup with lots of seafood -Angel hair shrimp pasta - delicious as well, wasn't my entree so can't comment too much but friends seemed to enjoy it -Salmon - not too memorable, I've had better -New England lobster roll - friend got this, says she has had better Desserts: -Excellent creme brulee!!! Stopped in to grab some lunch after my VA appointment. Service and the food were both great. I had the crab cakes with fries and asparagus. Tasted amazing. Sat at the bar next to the large Christmas tree while listening to Christmas music. The ambiance was great. I'll be sure to come back with the wife next time. My boyfriend and I are lactose intolerant and ordered pick up from here because they had great reviews for allergies. Dairy allergies were mentioned during the call for the order however upon receiving our burgers they were most definitely buttered . We made a reservation and when we arrived we were greeted and seated within minutes and they already had the kids menus & crayons plus water cups for them ready! Our waitress went over all of the specials and was very attentive. The atmosphere was awesome, not too loud and beautiful decor and ambiance. I had the shrimp puttanesca and it was phenomenal, just the right amount of spice and brininess. My husband got the steak and crab cake and I stole a piece of the crab cake , it was nice and meaty and well seasoned! My mother had the ciopinno and although it was packed with seafood, the broth could of definitely used more flavor, the seafood was good but definitely lacking flavor. When my friend's fam and we visited this suburban town of York we expected to see only lousy fast food and mediocre eateries... and right on our first night, we were proven SO WRONG by The First Post. Wow, I mean where do I even begin? Umm... the huge PARKING LOT that has a bridge ya gotta cross over a brook? How about that Irish gold style paneled exterior with exquisite sign? Or the friendly servers leading you to this cavernous, high-ceiling, solid brick-walled, wood booth'd bar/dining area that just invites you to sit and chow down? We were surprised from the moment we entered, and it just got better from there. The FOOOOD... is amazingly good here. I mean amazing. We were starving so we had ordered fried calamari, French onion soup, and some asian chicken wraps. That calamari was unlike ANY fried calamari we've ever ordered in the US... in that it actually was fresh calamari. Batter was so delicate and calamari actually had parts, not just all frozen Michellin tire-esq rings-a-dumbs! We've never praised fried calamari so much! Asian chicken wraps were devoured by two ladies and they didn't even realize there were 2 sauces to dip into. I think that says a lot. Soup was good, though a bit salty as they usually are - I just ordered it for my son who was craving it. It was nicely cheesy though. For entree, crab cakes were delicious with string beans & mash. My lobster roll was very lightly-sauced, with delicious side salad & hefty steak fries. My friend raved about his burger which had roasted mushrooms in em, and the salmon dish really stole the show - it was on a bed of charred medley of vegetable that was so earthy and tasty, and the fish was so juicy like it had been drinking mimosa. It was a slam-dunk dinner-in-a-bowl. Oh, did I tell you they had real great Manhattan, too? I mean, this place could not go wrong. I was so jealous of the diners (as if they were all from York) cuz this was seriously good eats... I couldn't really think of any other place like this in NJ. I LOVE THIS PLACE! I have a coworker who recommended it, and we decided to make the drive down from the Harrisburg area. We were greeted warmly at the bar and served drinks quickly. We started with a dozen Blue Point oysters, which are very reasonably priced ($2.50 each) and were absolutely delicious. They do have $1 buck-a-shuck Tuesdays, which are typically Delaware Bay oysters which are also fantastic! We also had a very good crab soup and calamari, both of which were amazing. The calamari does have tentacles so if you're a tentacle lover then you have to try these! We have also been there twice for buck-a-shuck Tuesdays and everything is always delicious and service at the bar is fast, friendly, and professional. This was my first time in York, PA and the food at The First Post did not disappoint. We started with a bunch of appetizers and of the selection the crab dip was my favorite. I ordered the crab chowder soup which was a cream based soup and it was delicious, it was rich and creamy and had a bunch of crab. I especially liked the old bay seasoning that was sprinkled on top. For my entree I order the shrimp primavera which was delicious. The shrimp were a medium size and the pepperoni elevated the flavor. I really liked all the gluten free options. The service was outstanding and our server did not miss a beat. He was very attentive and checked back often. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and there is plenty of room for large parties. The have a huge bar if you are looking for a cocktail. Loved the architecture and history of the building. read more

Fantastic spot. I was in the area and looking for a place to eat. I saw online that The First Post had some history and great reviews. I was not disappointed. The exterior is beautiful. Just the walk from the parking lot was already winning me over, tons of spaces, scenic views. Once we entered we were greeted warmly by the staff. The restaurant interior is stunning. It looks like a piece of history. Our server was fantastic. Very attentive and On point with everything just like seemingly all the staff. We had some of the $2 oysters, the crab soup, the charred octopus and the ravioli- basically we nibbled on a bunch of starters. The desserts were so good! The octopus was delicious, great chunky portion, but the salinity from the capers was a bit much. That dish probably could have used citrus over capers and some fresh greens instead of the raw onion.
