I got kicked out because I asked the manager for my money back. He was rude and told me the meatballs were just made, but then I asked him how long ago he finally told me a few days ago. After giving me my money back he asked me to leave because he thought I was being disrespectful by Speaking about the quality of the food. I came in today after about a year this incident happened to get a barbecue Slice and the guy goes. Do you remember me? I told him no, and I started to order a barbecue Slice he told the Spanish guy not to give me the pizza and then he asked me do I remember what I said the last time I was here. I then remembered him .. it was the rude guy with the meatballs and he's not even Italian. Well Famous Rays has been in Verona for 40 years now, and I know I've passed it for at least the last 20. I finally stopped in for lunch and enjoyed an excellent slice of pizza. This is a place where you walk in and the counter is in front of you with lots of pies to choose from. The seating is all on stools around the windows. Service is all business, not much small talk. While I sat there and ate, there was a steady stream of customers coming in and out. I had a sausage slice which was very good. The crust was just the right thickness and the sausage, cheese, and sauce, very tasty. This specialty slice and small soda was $5.60, pretty reasonable. I'm glad I finally stopped in. Good Pizza but not worth the $34 for a pie with one or two toppings. Parking lot is incredibly hard to get into with out making illegal turns. The worst designed lot to park in & if you want to taste Cheese on the pie you better extra cheese. read more

I put in an order through DoorDash. I waited almost an hour and a half and never received it. I called the restaurant to find out the status of the order and the guy told me they on pause from using DoorDash. I asked him why they are still allowing Orders to be put through DoorDash if they don't use it anymore as people are just sitting around thinking that their food is going to be delivered. He kept saying to me in a very rude tone was "I don't know what to tell you". Not cool. Will never order from there again. read more

So I was to famous Rays in NYC back in the day and this location many years ago. Famous Rays pizza is known that you need to eat it with a fork and knife. The cheese would be so thick and cheesy that it would fall off the pizza. There was no way you could pick up a slice. That was not the case at this place. The taste was very good but this is NOT the original Famous Rays Pizza of NYC. I stopped on my way home from Montclair but there are plenty of pizza joints near me that taste better. I also ordered a drink and after I got my pizza, they forgot about it. I had to ask. I will not be back and don't let the name mislead you. It should just be called Rays Pizza. I cannot believe it took me this long to try this place - out of all the pizza spots near Montclair, this is my favorite. The winner is the dough they use. Their pizzas might not look the best but they are so doughy and tasty and they have the BEST garlic knots I've ever tasted. Got two pizzas delivered through Uber eats. Grandma pie is my favorite. Was so happy to see how much fresh tomato and basil was on top. I always like to throw it in a frying pan to crisp up the bottom a bit. The other pizza had plentiful toppings on it. Everything was delivered quickly and warm especially on a cold night. The style of this Famous Ray's is a slice with a thicker, chewy crust and a generous topping of cheese with a hint of tasty sauce. If that's your preference of pizza style, this place is for you. Best to order a few slices and a soda, sit on a barstool and eat at the counter while admiring scenic Bloomfield Avenue. There are some outdoor concrete picnic tables for the warmer weather. It's a great spot! Their large pies are quite generous. It's a slightly doughy crust, not thin and crispy, but very good. The calzone is very nice, as well. Surprise favorites were the garlic knots (crispy and chewy) and the very fresh cannolis. The cannolis are not to be missed! read more

After over 10 mins I politely asked if they were ready, an older man asked who took your order and I pointed to the young man and the older man said he was new ( I can understand that just apologize and move on) Another young man starts yelling stating that where you have to place the order like I did not just do that (I have been there several times) The older man whom assume is a manager/owner says knowing. I can't believe anybody would rate Famous Ray's less than 5 stars. The vegetable pizza is my favorite. Fresh tomatoes, spinach, broccoli, onions, mushrooms, green & red peppers. I give The Famous Rays Pizza in Verona a thumbs up. My Family and I just moved from Manhattan to Montclair, we thought that to enjoy a great pizza we will have to drive into the city. However, we stopped by the Famous Rays Pizza in Verona and to our surprise, the Pizza we had was better than any New York pizza we ever tasted. The pizza was amazing Real Traditional NY Style Pizza, with A+ crust, loads of great cheese and excellent tasting tomato sauce. Famous Ray's...you were there when we needed you. We were all heading back from somewhere and decided to take Bloomfield Ave. home so we could grab a bite to eat. When I first moved back to Jersey your pizza was awesome and I figured 'its pizza, it was great, it's still gotta be great!" I've learned over the course of the last few months that "you can't go home again"...nothing seems to live up to how we remember food in our memories. And Famous Rays is no different. We ordered six different kinds of slices for four of us-pepperoni, plain, sausage, white with spinach, margherita, and buffalo chicken. All were good...sadly, none were great. Crust is thicker than I like, but at least it has some flavor-and it wasn't underdone as some others have mentioned in their reviews. The pepperoni, sausage, white, and margherita were just ok. Buffalo chicken was actually very good...and I usually won't eat buffalo chicken pizza. The slices taste fine, but I'm not a thick crust guy and I'm not a fan of the sauce they make/use on the pies. There was also something different about the mozzarella-can't put my taste buds on it, but it seemed like it was missing something-I NEVER put salt on my pizza (EVER), but I put a little on the plain slice and it tasted a little better. For me, pizza is always tough...I know what I like, and I'm pretty picky, but I like trying new places. There is no accounting for taste, especially in pizza. I worked with a girl who drove to Verona from 20 miles away just to eat in this rathole. She thought I was lucky to live near it. Gimme a break. I consider "Famous" Ray's to be some of the worst pizza you can put in your face. Let me break down just what a dump this place is: --inside Ray's a small with window areas to stand and eat. I think there's a table or two outside if you want to inhale the lovely traffic. It's a takeout place pretty much. --service is fine if you want a guy who needs to shower serving your slices. They could easily clean up a bit. --the menu is standard greezy Jersey pizza joint. Nothing on the menu will surprise you, that's for sure. --the pie itself is simply awful. There's at least 3 pizza places like this in nearly every township in NJ. The slices are greasy with the kind of crap toppings you might get at a chain pizza place. Also, out of the 4-5 times I've eaten in this place the pizza has NEVER tasted like it didn't sit there for an hour before I ate it. If you are in Verona and want a pie or a slice you should try Forte (down Bloomfield Ave near Caldwell) or drive to Cedar Grove on Pompton and give Giuseppe's a try. Forte has a thicker crust and their margherita pie is a local legend. At Guiseppe's their pie is thinner crust and fresh. I like their grilled veggie slice. You could also try Verona Pizza in the middle of town. Their pie ain't great, but it's heaps better than Ray's. My theory is that people who like this place probably never got exposed to good pizza. Been going to this place occasionally since I got my Driver's License 16 years ago. Here's the deal: everybody likes different kinds of pizza. If you're a thin crust person, don't give Ray's 1 star because their crust is thicker. That really isn't fair. That's not to say that this is the best "thicker crust" pizza I've ever had. They're doing pizza their way, and it's pretty good. I go in there maybe once every three months, and I've been doing it consistently over the years. I've never ordered a whole pie from them, and I always thought they were a little pricey. Look, you're not buying a house - you're buying a slice of pizza that you're gonna eat at the the counter in about 5 minutes. You may love it, you may hate, people seem to very polarized about Ray's, not just on Yelp, but around the campfire as well. So, I say try a slice and see for yourself. For me, it's convenient, at times, and even when I'm not already driving past there, sometimes I want a little change. I recommend the Grandma Slice. . . Finally, regarding the guys that work there. . . Hey, I'm a little old-school, but they're pizza guys - if anyone is allowed to whistle at the young ladies, it's them. What was once the Staple of Pizza with Cheese gooey and oozing off the plate back in the 90's has gone by the way of the standard Pizza type place with OK food nothing fantastic... Not Bad just not anything special. Place is spaced out nicely with long place to view all the different types of pizza slices from Sicilian to regular with various toppings etc. They also have some pastas and other items which were not tried. The regular traditional pizza was average with very good crust but absolutely nothing going on with the cheese and the sauce. The Square Sicilian was much better with again exceptional crust but it simply is lacking the burst of flavor found in top quality pizza places especially in the North East. Bottom line here is they are average at best with only fountain drinks to choose from as well.
