Mark and his crew went above and beyond to make our 1922 craftsman look like new while respecting its age and character. They take pride in their work, so they even re-stained and varnished our front door for free because they didn't think the previous contractor had done a good enough job. The whole experience was friendly, fast, and totally worth the money! read more

Finally worked with The Educated Painters after hearing recommendations from others for years. I never wanted to use them because I heard they were not cheap. Very good, but not cheap. Well. Sometimes you get what you pay for. I had used other painters who quoted lower prices and put up with the results. I never really understood the value of excellent painting, but once I experienced the quality of The Educated Painters and their care and concern, I will never go back to the cheaper alternatives! read more

We could not be more impressed by the service and results of The Educated Painters! We called Mark because we just wanted to repaint our sun-blasted trim on the house. Mark showed up promptly and convinced us -- rightly, I think -- that if we fixed the trim, the rest of the house would look bad by comparison, so we really needed to paint the entire exterior. Our house is a 75-year-old shingle-style house, and required a lot of carpentry work to replace termite-riddled and dry-rotted shingles before any painting could be done. As well, some of the shingles were curling at the corners and had to be pinned down, and there was a lot of hand sanding involved to remove the peeling paint. It is two stories high, and has a matching unattached garage, so it was a big job. And we would not only need a paint crew, but a carpenter as well. We also knew there was a dry rot problem on our balcony, and Mark said that the carpenter would have to have a look at it. The balcony ended up being about three times the job we thought it would be, thanks to sinking pillars, dry rot, and railings that were not up to current code. Now -- having spent a lot more than we were planning on originally -- we could not be more pleased with the results. Mark and his crew were as professional as you could hope, and pleased to accommodate our schedule and needs. At one point we had 18 workmen working on our house -- all told, the job took about 12 days. The result: the house looks great! The combination of colors Mark suggested is excellent and gives the house a richer look. We also painted the door a reddish-orange, contrasting to the creamy-white trim, which gives the house a warmer, more welcoming look. The rebuilt balcony is less likely to collapse in an earthquake, with attractive, up-to-code new railng so our small children can join us on it. Mark and the crew were polite, detail-oriented, and thorough in the job. The carpenter was thorough, quality-minded, and accepted a couple of suggestions I made for the balcony to improve its look and maintenance. And, in the end, even with a lot more work and materials than we were counting on, the price wasn't that far off from the original estimate and we think it was a great value for what we received. We will not hesitate to recommend The Educated Painters to anyone, and will call them again when we need painting! By the way, Mark told us that he got three other jobs from people who saw the crews at work at our home and how much better they made the house look! read more

Mark's team did a good job painting a portion of the exterior and interior of our home before it was featured on a home a tour. Afterwards, however, when we needed him to return to do some touch-up work, Mark failed to show up when promised and then failed to return our phone calls. Also, my wife overheard Mark (who professes to be a minister) verbally abuse one of his employees. We won't use the Educated Painters again! read more

I just had my 1921 redwood ship-lap siding home repainted by the Educated Painters. The time and care that they all put into the preparation of this house was more akin to restoration than "just" painting. Short of re-siding the entire house (at impossible cost), it looks as good as is humanly possible. The owner and entire crew were nothing but helpful and polite, hard-working people. After the initial work was done, and the final check was written, things seemed to "do a 180". I will add here that the original contract was for a certain dollar amount; after hearing much belly-aching about how much of his OWN money he had put into the job, I split the difference with him and ended up paying 17% over and above the original contracted amount (plus, of course, the extras for his "neurosurgeon" and carpenter). I had been assured that certain things would be done by the crew; and then those things would be done by the carpenter (at extra cost). Some of these things were not done. About 2 months after the completion, I was "given" a worker for 1/2 day to make things right. He did his best to fix things but could not resolve all issues (one of which was that the siding was actually two different colors - the only resolution would have been to re-spray the house; I was basically blamed because I had chosen a rich color). I note that this company gives a TWO WEEK guarantee and, although verbally assured otherwise, I see now that "it is what it is." Nails are already protruding through the paint, and cracks have appeared - which, by the way, are being blamed on the fact that it is an old wooden house (which it was at the beginning!) read more

Mark Harris, owner of Educated Painters took great pride in the paint job he did on my house. He mentioned several times that the job had gained him clients in the neighborhood. But the paint job was shotty and several exterior eaves began peeling after 2 months. And when it came to follow-up he was as pathetic as you can get. A lot of the corners and edges were missed or chipped so when we tried to get the paint codes from him to fix the spots he avoided our calls and then blamed his runaway assistant on loosing our paint colors. We spent over $5000 on the paint job and he didn't even have the decency to return our calls. They cut corners, literally, and are a waste of money. The details are what is important. Anyone can paint a house, but between the quality of the paint job, which was hurried and half ass, and then the horrible customer relations, it was truly a mistake for us to hire them. DO NOT HIRE the Educated Painters. They don't care about their customers at all. read more

Mark approached the challenge of repairing and refreshing the exterior of our 90+-year-old bungalow with great care and enthusiasm. Patching old stucco, replacing bits of rotting wood, scraping many layers of old paint from the windows -- his crew was thorough and dare I say cheerful at their work, diligent and thoroughly professional. During the job, Mark was instantly reachable for questions, and very responsive -- helping us arrive at just the right color choices. We would call on him again in a heartbeat. read more

Mark and his crew just finished our house, it was a large project with significant repair and prep work required. We bid the job out to multiple high quality painters and Mark's price was fair. His crew is great, with good attitudes, respectful of our property and privacy, and with extreme attention to every detail. We are artists, very picky, detail oriented, some say too much so. No matter what we threw at Mark during the project, he accommodated with a smile. You will not find a more positive painter. We could not be more pleased with Educated Painters, now our painters for life. Highly recommended. read more

We could not be more pleased with the work that Mark and his team did. The exterior of our home had not been painted for many, many years prior to us moving in and we were never able to make it a priority until recently. We spoke with several companies about the project, but Mark's vision for it resonated with us immediately. His team honestly treated the house as though it was their own, working tirelessly and with remarkable attention to detail. During prep, they were thorough but thoughtful about what needed some extra attention, replacing rotted wood in spots, repairing broken siding, and suggesting simple improvements that made a huge difference in our home's appearance. They prepped, cleaned, sanded, and painted the exterior of our house, including doors and security doors, our wooden deck, and our garage and even helped us see the need for new rain gutters, which they facilitated on our behalf. We honestly enjoyed having the entire team working on our home and appreciate the clear pride they took in their work. Our daughter would even wait for them outside each morning so she could hang out with them before school. The work they did honestly transformed the outside of our house, delivering the project on budget and at a very reasonable cost--especially for the quality of work they did. We can't say enough great things about them. read more

We recently hired Mark and his Educated Painters company to paint the exterior of our 1950's Pasadena house. The house had not been painted in 20 years and the condition of the exterior wood was pretty bad in places especially on the sun facing south side. Mark's team of three spent 10 days sanding, repairing and priming the wood for the house, garage and shed before applying a single drop of exterior paint. The painting took another 5 days. The results are truly amazing. He and his team took the time to address all of the problem areas before repainting. He also assisted with selection of colors. If you want a painter that is concerned with details, I have no hesitation in recommending Educated Painters. read more

We hired The Educated Painters to help us prep our house to sell. Mark and his crew were fantastic. They were prompt, responsive, and a pleasure to have in our home. Their attention to detail was excellent and were very accommodating as I kept adding rooms we wanted painted. I have had several compliments on the painting job and we are very pleased with the quality of work they performed. I definitely recommend The Educated Painters. read more

I was recommended to Mark Harris and the Educated Painters by a production company and by many homeowners in the South Pasadena neighborhood. He came highly recommended and was described as extremely professional, detail-oriented, and honest. It was a no-brainer to hire the Educated Painters after my first consultation with Mark! Mark spent a great deal of time and attention in walking through the exterior and interior of my house and outlining all the work that I wanted done. He is incredibly thoughtful, positive and genuinely caring person. In addition, he quoted me a fair price for all the work that I wanted done on the exterior and interior (i.e., sanding, replacing wood, cauking, painting). Mark not only took the time to help with choosing the right colors, but he was always there to give suggestions and direction during the painting process. In addition, his crew was amazing! I have never worked with such an outstanding group of men who were professional, ethical, detail-oriented, pleasant, and had no problem with me micromanaging them. Even when I asked them to touch up and repaint certain areas when it was my fault in choosing the wrong color! I recognize that my house (120 year old Victorian) was in terrible shape (i.e., peeling paint, replacement of siding, moving wires, covering outlet boxes) and needed major attention, especially in maintaining the historic integrity of the home. That being said, Mark and his crew were extremely accommodating and put a lot of effort in making sure that I was satisfied with their work. They were always checking in with me to make sure that they completed all tasks to my satisfaction and were thoughtful when it came to covering items and keeping my house clean throughout the process. I am so thrilled with their overall work! I wish that all my experiences with home repairs/painting/remodeling could be as positive. Not only did they go above and beyond what I had expected, Mark managed to deliver what he had promised me..."The best looking house on the block!" Seriously, you cannot get better than Mark Harris and the Educated Painters. . I would rate them on a scale from 1-10 as 100!!! read more

Mark Harris and his Educated Painters were fantastic! The exterior of our historic Pasadena home needed painting. Mark responded promptly and listened carefully as we toured outside the house and he then provided his best suggestions. We had seen his work around the neighborhood and anticipated the cost would be high. In fact, his estimate was remarkably reasonable. More importantly, his crew was so wonderful in every way--prompt, efficient, careful, respectful, skilled--that we were delighted to have them working at our house. Each day in the 5-week long project confirmed our judgment to hire the Educated Painters. Our house looks great and the process was a pleasure. They will certainly be our painters in the future. They will be back in 2011 for interior work. We received very high quality service at a very fair price. Highly recommended without reservation. read more

If you are looking for an expensive job, with all kinds of promises that are never kept. Loads of overspray on your brickwork. Paint that bubbles after a couple of months .Guy's who can not cut a straight line with a brush. Workers that arrive on the job without a pressure washer, when I was assured the outside of my home would be pressure washed, and had to loan them mine, which they never used. Give them a can of Goof-Off to get some of the paint off the windows....... If this is the kind of job you want, then these are your boy's. read more

My husband and I have used Educated Painters for over a decade to paint two different houses (exterior and interior). We trust him and his painters to do high quality, very detail-oriented work. He and his team just did an amazing job for us in renovating our 1960s era kitchen. In addition to doing their usual excellent work in painting our kitchen and several other rooms, the Educated Painters scraped and plastered some very damaged walls, did carpentry work in putting up a beautiful crown molding, and then refinished and painted our retro 60s metal cabinets. Mark also gave some great input on design and color, while remaining very respectful of my husband's and my vision for the kitchen. All this was done on an emergency turn-around, with the crew being very clean and considerate in their work. Mark and his team gave great value to our project, and I recommend Educated Painters to everyone I know. read more

We first used Mark Harris & The Educated Painters ten years ago when they painted the exterior of our house. They did an outstanding job in every regard, from beginning the job each morning at 7:30 sharp to cleaning up at the end of day, leaving the property spotless. All of Mark's painters are not only skilled professionals, but courteous and accommodating to the homeowner as well. Their craftsmanship is impeccable. So it was an easy decision to call them back this summer to repaint the outside. We were so thrilled with the same wonderful experience we had 10 years earlier, we decided to paint the living room, dining room and hallway. Once again, the painting was meticulous; the attention to detail extraordinary. Not only was Mark dependable and reliable in returning calls, he was a great help in choosing colors. Our home looks beautiful - we are ready to enter the holiday season with a whole new look, thanks to The Educated Painters. We can not recommend them highly enough. read more

Mark and his crew are indeed Educated Painters. They painted our home and we could not be happier! His crew was professional and respectful. They kept our property clean and were a pleasure to have around. Mark was fantastic. He was readily available and spent quality time with us to select our color scheme for our house as well as the stain for our deck. The thing that was most impressive was the amount of prep work his crew did prior to the actual painting. There was no rush; instead it was all about getting the job done right. Also, Mark handled replacing rotted wood and did a thorough inspection for any potential problems around the house. His price was in line with other bids but the work was superior. Mark even came by on Christmas Day to handle an issue, which I can safely say no one else would have done. Without a doubt, Mark and his crew were the best and we will continue our relationship with him for maintenance of our home. Mark's attitude and respect for all are beyond compare and we highly, highly recommend Mark Harris and The Educated Painters. read more
