I visited The Easterly with high expectations based on the glowing reviews, but my experience was mixed. The restaurant boasts a great ambiance, with enjoyable music and a stunning view. The staff was friendly, but the service left much to be desired. Our server, though polite, seemed inexperienced in fine dining, visiting our table only a couple of times, including when taking our order.
We ordered a variety of dishes: ceviche, grilled octopus, seafood risotto, potatoes au gratin, and brussels sprouts. Surprisingly, the highlight of the meal was the bread service, featuring delicious focaccia points with a flavorful compound herb butter. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal didn't meet expectations.
The ceviche lacked flavor, likely due to insufficient time in the lime juice. The grilled octopus was tough and chewy, with only the char coming through; the accompanying garlic aioli tasted more like mayonnaise. While the seafood risotto was cooked well, it was overwhelmed by excessive cream, and the separation of oil created an unpleasant mouthfeel. The potatoes au gratin were visually appealing but made with Gorgonzola cheese, which might appeal to some but didn't match the traditional flavor I anticipated. The brussels sprouts were decent, but the strong, spicy sauce overpowered the dish.
I shared my feedback with the chef and manager, appreciating the overall skill in cooking but suggesting they provide more detailed menu descriptions to manage expectations. When I mentioned we didn't enjoy the food, the server removed it without asking if we wanted to continue or take it home, which felt dismissive. The manager offered a complimentary dessert as a gesture, which was appreciated but didn't quite compensate for the disappointing meal.
For a $300 dinner for two, I expected more. While The Easterly has potential, especially with its ambiance and staff, there are basic improvements they could make to enhance the dining experience. I hope they take this feedback to heart and refine their offerings. read more
