The venue arm of local favorite MJQ, featuring a pretty tiny stage in a equally small room, which makes, mostly, for a good show setting. The sound here is a mixed bag, depending on who's working, but it tends to be better than several other local venues: you can at least hear everything most nights. It works out well for a lot of people because while waiting for certain bands you can go into the MJQ half, or right next door to the Local, and wait while having a drink instead of standing around sweating. You can also go out in the parking lot and take up conversation with the ongoing crew of begging bums that are always going through the parking lot, though the staff here does a good job trying to keep them from harassing the crowds. They tend to have a better line-up of shows than most other venues, with a pretty reliably solid array of up and coming indie acts on a smaller tier. One thing a lot of unfamiliars have trouble with is that fact that there aren't really any signs for the venue, nor for MJQ, as traditionally they like to keep it cool kids only. Basically, though, if you're coming down Ponce from Peachtree, you'll pass Eats on your left, go under a bridge, pass Chipotle on your left and then its the next shopping center parking lot, right before Marco's Pita, across from a liquor store and Kroger. Parking can sometimes suck, since the lot is small, but don't park at Kroger. If anywhere, go behind the Local or Doc Green's-- they don't charge or tow.

The Drunken Unicorn is the performance venue attached to underground club MJQ. I've seen a couple of good bands play here, including gypsy punk band Gogel Bordello. The Unicorn is what positive-thinking people call intimate, and what I call small. That means you're going to have a good seat...er, place to stand. Don't worry about the lack of seating. You're probably going to the Unicorn for a rock show, and one should never sit at a rock show. In addition to the close quarters, the acoustics are lousy. Or the sound guy is lousy. Either way, the sound is never very good. So what is there to like about the Unicorn? Well, it's a thoroughly loud, cramped, smoky experience. Which is pretty much what you'd want from a rock venue, right?

My instinct is to give it three stars since that's how I really feel about it NOW. But I have the distinct feeling that if I were still an Atlanta denizen, I'd come here often and give it a four or five because it would be MY club, MY hole-in-the-wall joint. So we'll give it a four. The music club is small, sparsely decorated, and loud loud loud. I liked how dancers from the adjoining room would get coaxed in by the performing band's music and come in to dance awhile before going back to the DJ's realm. That was cool. Drinks were good and beers were cheap for Atlanta. I'll go back. I do so hate smoking indoors, though. I do so love the nice people working there and the variety of bands they host.

Free water was absolutely the best (more businesses should be so kind). Restrooms were clean. The only issue is there seemed to be no accommodations at all for people with disabilities. I was there with my kid who has had 11 surgeries on his legs in the last 14 years. There is no way for anyone to sit down and see the state which is a real and literal pain for my kid. I asked one man who was working there if there was an elevator available and informed him that my kid had disabilities (we've got the tag in the car and everything). He gave me an annoyed look and said no. Later I found out that the man was letting people with canes out a different set of doors. If only I had known that we had to flag our disabilities to gain access to ADA accommodation... Yes, my kid has a cane but he doesn't always use it because he doesn't always need it.

Some positives - love the affordable and safe parking garage right outside the complex. I like that you get screened with security as you enter the courtyard and then you can walk around. The food stand in the corner was priced well and had nice service. The negatives were really the venue itself. "dark and dirty" were how I would describe it. It just felt like no one really cared about keeping it up and the audio wasn't great either although you never know whose fault that is.

We had an 8 pm reservation but ended up getting there early. We were seated 30 minutes early with no problem. The rain was coming, so we were offered indoor seating, which worked out perfectly for our group of 6. Service was on point and timely this evening, and truly a genuine friendliness. I just wish I could remember her name. There are some delicious choices on the menu--meat, seafood, & vegetarian. The drinks were all well done and tasty--from the Old Fashions to the lemons drop to the shot of vodka. Our food came in good time, and every dish was prepared just right. The igloo decor was cute and "wintery" with cozy blankets, a basket of treats and goodies, and a heater. The package included free ice-skating and unlimited games in the rooftop. Our waiter was awesome and very attentive to our needs. However, the experience wasn't comfortable enough for the high price we paid. Even though we had one heater, the igloo was still a bit cold. Also, the heater's cord was short, so we couldn't move much and had to stay right next to it. Maybe adding a second heater and a hot chocolate station in the igloo, along with some music, would make the space feel much cozier and nicer.

We arrived there exactly at 5 PM, when it opens, but there was already a pretty extensive line. A little outside the entrance, they check your ID, which I had no idea was a thing. So make sure you have your IDs with you and are 21+. There's a bar area for drinks and a separate counter where you will order and pay for your food. (They make it pretty explicit that you can't get wings to-go.) Find a seat, and once your food is ready, they'll announce your name, and you pick up your food from the window. FOOD: We got wings in the flavors of lemon pepper (dry rub), sun-dried tomato (dry rub), buffalo lemon pepper (wet), and jerk buffalo (wet). I will say that I definitely preferred the wet wings to the dry wings. I found the dry wings to be a little too salty. In my opinion, the wings and the cook on them were just okay. I wasn't blown away or anything. Maybe the relatively cheap beer and the vibes help draw in all the appeal. TLDR// I don't think I had the greatest wings of all time here, but the vibes were really casual and pleasant. I'm glad I was able to try a place so beloved by locals.
