I stopped at the Don for the first time today and I'm very happy that I did. The moment I entered, I was greeted by the friendly owner! She was very helpful in explaining the menu and she made our experience memorable. I got the spicy Thai tom yum shrimp fried rice and a fruit tea. Both were tasty but neither was my favorite thing to order. Giving four stars because even though I didn't love the rice, there were like 8/9 shrimp in the bowl so it was quite a bit. The I'll happily return back soon to try the other items on the menu.

We had come here after seeing various Instagram reels of this place as well as its predecessor (similar concepts). It appears that the predecessor allowed you to build your own bento box, however The Don has pre-set bento boxes where you select an entree and the sides are decided for you. We came at lunchtime on a weekday and were the only ones inside. The employee behind the counter was super helpful in explaining what all was included in the bento boxes. The bento boxes include white rice, a vegetable side, and two egg rolls. They also have a giant tablet next to the counter if you prefer to avoid the human interaction and place your order directly. Seems a bit redundant to me honestly. Upon placing our oder, the employee said it would be a 5-10 minute wait for our food to come out. We ended up waiting nearly 15 minutes and the whole time, no one else came into the store aside from a DoorDash pickup. They do have complimentary cold water and one long table to sit at while you wait. I got the chicken katsu bento box while my partner got the spicy tofu bento box. The bento boxes are packaged super cute and presentation is very neat. These reminded me of the ekiben we bought in Japan before hopping on the Shinkansen! However instead of self-heating by pulling a string, these here had a much longer wait to come out, lol. The chicken katsu was perfectly crispy and came with Japanese curry sauce (packaged separately to pour on top when ready). The spicy tofu was fried just right and had a good amount of jalapeños to add an extra kick. My only complaint here was the vegetable side: mine came with kimchi while my partner's came with seaweed salad. We both wanted what the other had, so ended up eating from each other's bento box for the side! We weren't asked a choice for our side, rather it seems like you get what you get and you don't throw a fit. For sides, we got the fried chicken bites and the miso soup. The fried chicken bites are like Taiwanese popcorn chicken - very crispy and chunks were sized just right. There was an accompanying spicy mayo which was good for dipping. The miso soup was sized generously but could have contained a bit more tofu, as it was nearly all soup broth. While the concept is unique for Houston, I do think some improvements could be made with wait time, since the concept of a takeout bento box (these are not really meant for dine-in) is to have something ready quickly. I would recommend checking the menu out ahead of time and calling in your order to minimize wait in the small space. Additionally, allowing for selection of a side would be helpful. Nonetheless, I hope this place makes it and we will make an effort to come back to try more of their offerings!

On my most recent visit we ordered mapo tofu with pork intestines off the specials menu - a hybrid of two of my favorite Sichuan-style dishes. The blend of bouncy, savory morsels amidst tender, saucy tofu was at once revolutionary and so obvious; why hadn't I yet seen this at any other restaurant? And sure, innards may not be everyone's cup of tea, but it's important for you to know that none of my past orders from the 50+ item menu have ever failed me, whether enjoyed in the restaurant or at home. Maybe you'd prefer the aromatic, classic, perfectly balanced three-cup chicken? Or the sweet-skinned duck, glazed so delicately that specks of sugar crystal threaten to jump off onto the plate as you pick up a juicy slice with your chopsticks? And if you're vegetarian, might you consider the punchy garlic eggplant or the wok-kissed string beans? I could go on. Do yourself a favor and come see for yourself, though I'd recommend parallel parking on the neighborhood streets behind the restaurant rather than the rocky parking lot, to save you some trouble. Bring friends and chow down family style - you'll need help covering as much of the menu as you can, but you'll definitely have to come back to try everything.

The crab rangoon burrito didn't really taste like crab rangoon. It was extremely creamy and heavily filled with cream cheese almost to the point of being overwhelming. After a few bites, it started to feel a bit sickening, and I don't think I could finish more than one slice. It was missing that traditional savory, umami flavor, and instead tasted only like cream cheese. The outer layer also didn't hold up well. It wasn't strong or crispy enough to support the filling, so everything felt soft and fell apart. It honestly made it difficult to eat without a spoon (which they did include). It was also overpriced at $16. The service was good and the ambiance was pretty standard.

The menu was quite expansive but cohesive with Italian/ Asian fusion. I got seated and immediately was given a menu and cold water in a stainless steel cup. I ordered the sliced beef udon soup version (there's also an option for stirfy) but granted, today was cloudy and slightly windy so it called for soup. After placing my order, I was given the proper utensils and shortly after, a large piping bowl was placed in front of me! Flavor was good and the sliced beef was addicting.. the portion was a bit much for lunch to me so I had to ask for togo and the waitress came out and put it away for me in a custom togo bag that sealed so that was fun to leave with. The waitress was certainly very tentative and made sure other guests had their waters filled at all times so I'd love to come back to try out their other menu items like their omurice or their lobster creamy rice. I was greeted at the entrance by friendly staff and was asked if I preferred to sit closer to the entrance or towards the back. I chose the seats deeper into the restaurant because it was a humid day and I wanted to keep my distance from the front door. We were promptly seated and here handed the menus. The menus must have been hot off the press because they were in very good condition. We proceeded to order two entrees (date night with the wife) and the food came out rather quickly. The flat rice noodle (pad si-ew) with beef is one of my go to dishes at any Thai restaurant. The one here was very good! It came out hot, presentation was nice, and the portions of beef were very generous. We also ordered the tofu yellow curry and it was delicious. The tofu was fried very well - so well that it kept up its crunch despite being soaked in the yellow curry. We got spice level 2 of 4 and it was perfect. The waiter called it "mild" but I would say closer to medium. Maybe mild for Thai food. Anyhow, no regrets and we devoured the yellow curry which also came with a side of rice. By the end of dining experience we were so full that we unfortunately did not have room for dessert. All in all, a great experience and we will be back for sure. Given that it's Uptown which generally means pricier food options, I thought the dishes were all fairly priced. I ordered the flat rice noodles with beef, and I was very impressed with the amount of beef and the ratio of meat/vegetables/noodles were perfect. The noodles were chewy and texturally pleasing, and the dish was well prepared. The yellow curry with tofu was extremely flavorful and the amount of spice was perfect for me. The tofu was battered and fried and held up well in the curry. My diagnosis: excellent Thai food in an upscale setting.
