Normally I really enjoy this place but on a Friday night as I am picking up dinner for me and the wife, I am incredibly disappointed. $50 on 2 dishes and an appetizer while the restaurant is only like 20% full AND they messed up my order. There is barely anyone one here and they messed up 33% of my order. My non-spicy popcorn chicken is inedible because it's so freaking spicy. Fail. Then the broken rice in my broken rice dish (as I quote from my wife) tasted "left over and over cooked." After visiting the waterfall park, Roostar was one of the places I wanted to try and happened to be nearby. I ordered the full grilled Pork Banh Mi sandwich ($8.99), which was really tasty with a nice mix of smoky and sweet flavors. The bread was soft on the inside with a nice crunch on the outside. We came out to Houston specifically to check out some banh mi spots and came across Roosters. The reviews were great, and being close to the Galleria made it an easy stop. The location is easy to spot and has plenty of parking, which is always a win. There's some outdoor seating, but with Houston heat doing what Houston heat does, we opted to stay inside. We arrived just as it seemed like a rush had ended, and the dining area was clean, organized, and well maintained. Ordering is done through kiosks, including payment, and then you find your own seat on a first-come, first-served basis. We ordered the salmon, grilled pork, and Mama's pork belly banh mi, along with the vermicelli bowl with lemongrass chicken. They also had free samples of their newest drink, which was a nice little bonus. The ladies helping with orders were very friendly, although it was a little difficult to hear at times. Once we ordered, we were given a pager and found a table. As the restaurant started getting busier, I was impressed with how well the team handled the crowd. There was always someone circulating through the dining area, clearing tables and making sure the next guest had a clean place to sit. That kind of attention to the dining area definitely doesn't go unnoticed. Now, the important part--the banh mi! These were GOOD. The bread had a nice toast and crunch, and you could tell the pâté tasted fresh and wasn't the canned stuff. The sandwiches were flavorful without being overwhelming. We also tried the vermicelli bowl with their newest Rooster creamy ginger sauce. We wanted to try something different from the usual fish sauce, and it was a great choice. Had to leave another review unfortunately. I have dined in and been at this restaurant about 3 times this past week because I love the curry. Unfortunately I ordered a drink and filled it at the tea stations and once I got home while drinking the drink I noticed a roach floating in my drink. Not only did I immediately throw up it was small enough that is came out of the dispenser here. I was horrified and livid and when I called they were pretty nonchalant about it. We arrived on Saturday after a concert the night before in Louisiana. Hit some pawn shops and sat off Westheimer searching Yelp for something familiar or new. Don't know when this location opened but it's a welcomed edition to a growing local dynasty. Simple order at the counter process. Grabbed our drinks and waited for our food. Only one gripe. You order an appetizer; it comes with the entrees. It should come before your main dish arrives. With that said the chips and "dip" was a nice start. The provided curry (with beef) is seasoned perfectly. My box with noodles, pork, and eggroll was a nice dish. The fish sauce was subtle but flavorful. I also liked the sweet chili option as well. Many times I've come across these branches and they always seem to dilute the quality of the product that is produced for the masses. I have to say that Roostars or at least this location is legit. I've explored their menu and their bahn mi and the quality and size are worth getting. The previous times I've ordered their vermicelli bowls the first time I tried their grilled pork which is a fan favorite and this last time I ordered their pork belly. Each bowl along with their protein comes with lettuce, carrots, peanuts, fried onions, cilantro, cucumber and an egg roll. All very tasty with a balanced amount of protein and vegetables. I would also recommend a side of their egg rolls too. Perfect crispness and plenty of proper filling. I would also recommend their Thai Tea or Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I'm angry it took me this long to try them out. Had a grilled pork banh mi and it was spectacular. Meat was wonderfully charred with a little sweetness. The baguette was fresh and I loved how much veg they stuffed in there. Also tried the matcha latte which was great! My sister and I ended up ordering the special bahn mi, the grilled pork box and the Bulgogi fries. The special bahn mi: this bahn mi featured a variety of cold cuts, pork belly and the best and most unique part of this sandwich: the pate. Everything was so delicious together. The bread was nicely buttered, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich also featured a nice array of fresh vegetables that paired well with the rich meats. I finished my meal and went back to order a bahn mi to-go. The grilled pork plate: this plate of meat was very subpar. The grilled pork was not flavorful enough. The texture was a little bit mushy, and overall there was nothing appealing about this plate that would set it above its competitors. The plate was expensive, and the portion size was also quite small. The Bulgogi fries: these fries were my least favorite dish of our meal. First of all I did not expect to get potato wedges. I feel like Bulgogi fries only go well with crispy straight fries. The Bulgogi on top with thick, not thin and saucy like Bulgogi should be. I will not be ordering this dish again. I came from Austin, I've seen tiktok videos of Roostar and the food is good, as advertised that I saw online. The alphabet soup is very good, basically it's the beef broth from pho so it's a familiar taste. Good flavors from the soup, a tad too oily for me. Nice salt balance. The banh mi is good, I've had plenty of banh mi in my life, this one is a good example. Fluffy bread, crispy exterior and nice soft inside. Definitely the bread is very good. The pate is yummy, earthy flavor and creamy at the same time. Love the overall mixture of pickled vegetables with the slices of meats. Great example of banh mi and the price point of $8 is not bad. I like the sandwich but not in love with it. I would have preferred slightly more meat, maybe 1 more layer will do. Every bite is more bread, the first I taste is bread, then the meats, and then the pickled vegetables. I'm shocked this restaurant has such high ratings! I dined here yesterday and got a beef (they only have ribeye for the beef option) bowl with rice as the base. It was $12.99 before tax, and the bowl was 70% rice with maybe a small scoop of meat and salad. The included egg roll was also not good. And the guy at the counter was extremely monotoned and unhelpful. Super disappointing for the price. I left hungry and wish I would have spent that money to get full and nourished elsewhere. Actually, it's unfair to just call this an banh mi shop because they have a ton of great options on the menu. But they have several different types of banh mi, and I really loved the OG. No notes - it was perfect. I also ordered some bulgogi fries and couldn't resist trying the coconut cream corn. Both were home runs. I've never seen coconut cream corn before, but it was everything you'd want it to be and something I think more restaurants should do. The bulgogi fries were really thick and curly, with all of the awesomeness piled on top. The manager hooked me up with a couple samples of the pho and the slaw. The pho was really enjoyable, but the slaw stole the show. I have never had anything quite like it and would never come back to Roostar again without getting this. It's a combination of unique flavors and texture in every bite that must be eaten by every future visitor of Roostar until the end of time. I've had multiple Roostar locations bookmarked for years and was very close to visiting one on several different occasions, but it just was never in the cards. The food is like it was back in the beginning and much better because they are paying attention to portion size so the rice does not over power the meat in the new entree bowls. We decided to try this place for lunch since the reviews looked promising. I believe we created our own box. I got rice and chicken, and my boyfriend got noodles and pork. I did not like the rice at all. It tasted really bland and mushy. The chicken had a nice lemongrass taste. I loved what my boyfriend got. I was very surprised at how tasty the food was since I love the Vietnamese food in Sacramento and I have high standards for Vietnamese food. The customer service was amazing! The staff were very helpful on explaining the items on the menu. We got the garlic bread for free since we checked in on Yelp. The bread was amazing! So flavorful yet perfectly crispy.
