It did not take long before food arrived. The egg roll was crispy and came out hot. The pork was well marinated. It was cut a bit thick so some pieces were chewy. Had to leave another review unfortunately. I have dined in and been at this restaurant about 3 times this past week because I love the curry. Unfortunately I ordered a drink and filled it at the tea stations and once I got home while drinking the drink I noticed a roach floating in my drink. Not only did I immediately throw up it was small enough that is came out of the dispenser here. I was horrified and livid and when I called they were pretty nonchalant about it. Obvs, if you manipulate a vowel I was destined to try this place. First locations weren't exactly close to my adopted H-Town hood. We arrived on Saturday after a concert the night before in Louisiana. Hit some pawn shops and sat off Westheimer searching Yelp for something familiar or new. Don't know when this location opened but it's a welcomed edition to a growing local dynasty. Simple order at the counter process. Grabbed our drinks and waited for our food. Only one gripe. You order an appetizer; it comes with the entrees. It should come before your main dish arrives. With that said the chips and "dip" was a nice start. The provided curry (with beef) is seasoned perfectly. My box with noodles, pork, and eggroll was a nice dish. The fish sauce was subtle but flavorful. I also liked the sweet chili option as well. Omg! Talk about a 360 turn around. I absolutely love this place and the changes they made to the menu. The food is like it was back in the beginning and much better because they are paying attention to portion size so the rice does not over power the meat in the new entree bowls. I will say that the vegetables could be more pickled and the meat did it taste seasoned. The bread and the aioli was the best part about the Banh Mi. Many times I've come across these branches and they always seem to dilute the quality of the product that is produced for the masses. I have to say that Roostars or at least this location is legit. I've explored their menu and their bahn mi and the quality and size are worth getting. The previous times I've ordered their vermicelli bowls the first time I tried their grilled pork which is a fan favorite and this last time I ordered their pork belly. Each bowl along with their protein comes with lettuce, carrots, peanuts, fried onions, cilantro, cucumber and an egg roll. All very tasty with a balanced amount of protein and vegetables. I would also recommend a side of their egg rolls too. Perfect crispness and plenty of proper filling. I would also recommend their Thai Tea or Vietnamese Iced Coffee. I'm angry it took me this long to try them out. Had a grilled pork banh mi and it was spectacular. Meat was wonderfully charred with a little sweetness. The baguette was fresh and I loved how much veg they stuffed in there. Also tried the matcha latte which was great! It was $12.99 before tax, and the bowl was 70% rice with maybe a small scoop of meat and salad. The included egg roll was also not good. And the guy at the counter was extremely monotoned and unhelpful. Super disappointing for the price. I left hungry and wish I would have spent that money to get full and nourished elsewhere. The only reason Roostar is getting a four star is because of the special bahn mi. If it weren't for the bahn mi, I would not frequent rooster nearly as much. My sister and I ended up ordering the special bahn mi, the grilled pork box and the Bulgogi fries. The special bahn mi: this bahn mi featured a variety of cold cuts, pork belly and the best and most unique part of this sandwich: the pate. Everything was so delicious together. The bread was nicely buttered, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich also featured a nice array of fresh vegetables that paired well with the rich meats. I finished my meal and went back to order a bahn mi to-go. The grilled pork plate: this plate of meat was very subpar. The grilled pork was not flavorful enough. The texture was a little bit mushy, and overall there was nothing appealing about this plate that would set it above its competitors. The plate was expensive, and the portion size was also quite small. The Bulgogi fries: these fries were my least favorite dish of our meal. First of all I did not expect to get potato wedges. I feel like Bulgogi fries only go well with crispy straight fries. The Bulgogi on top with thick, not thin and saucy like Bulgogi should be. I will not be ordering this dish again. The alphabet soup is very good, basically it's the beef broth from pho so it's a familiar taste. Good flavors from the soup, a tad too oily for me. Nice salt balance. The banh mi is good, I've had plenty of banh mi in my life, this one is a good example. Fluffy bread, crispy exterior and nice soft inside. Definitely the bread is very good. The pate is yummy, earthy flavor and creamy at the same time. Love the overall mixture of pickled vegetables with the slices of meats. Great example of banh mi and the price point of $8 is not bad. I like the sandwich but not in love with it. I would have preferred slightly more meat, maybe 1 more layer will do. We decided to try this place for lunch since the reviews looked promising. I believe we created our own box. I got rice and chicken, and my boyfriend got noodles and pork. I did not like the rice at all. It tasted really bland and mushy. The chicken had a nice lemongrass taste. I loved what my boyfriend got. The noodles with the pork and the veggies were an excellent choice. No notes - it was perfect. I also ordered some bulgogi fries and couldn't resist trying the coconut cream corn. Both were home runs. I've never seen coconut cream corn before, but it was everything you'd want it to be and something I think more restaurants should do. The bulgogi fries were really thick and curly, with all of the awesomeness piled on top. The manager hooked me up with a couple samples of the pho and the slaw. The pho was really enjoyable, but the slaw stole the show. I have never had anything quite like it and would never come back to Roostar again without getting this. It's a combination of unique flavors and texture in every bite that must be eaten by every future visitor of Roostar until the end of time. I've had multiple Roostar locations bookmarked for years and was very close to visiting one on several different occasions, but it just was never in the cards. I was very surprised at how tasty the food was since I love the Vietnamese food in Sacramento and I have high standards for Vietnamese food. The customer service was amazing! The staff were very helpful on explaining the items on the menu. We got the garlic bread for free since we checked in on Yelp. The bread was amazing! So flavorful yet perfectly crispy. I had a lot of hesitancy coming here as I was assuming this was just a gimicky restaurant. Boy was I surprised and definitely glad I came here! We ordered quite a spread between us so the grilled chicken and special banh mi, beef alphabet soup, beef curry fries, lychee tea, and garlic bread (thanks Yelp for the check-in treat!). The banh mi looked good and until I took a bite, I was still under the what is this gimmicky "fancy" banh mi that looks just like any other one? The bread was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, it was warmed up so the pate had a melty/creamy consistency, the meats and veggies were fresh and flavorful. It really was a great banh mi and probably one of, if not, my favorites in the Houston area. Everything else was also a nice surprise, very flavorful, slightly sweet alphabet soup with actual rice noodle alphabet pieces. The curry fries were a nice vietnamese curry, I wish it packed a bit more oomph to stand up to the fries but still really great. The garlic bread was very well buttered up. Def do not sleep on the lychee tea either! Our cashier even came by to check on us, which was a nice extra service for a fast casual spot. Tried gogi fries for the first time and omg they were delicious! I'd definitely recommend them as your meal - not a side or appetizer- because they are very filling and satisfying to your pallet. Fries were hot and fresh, crispy on the outside and soft like a baked potato inside. The flavor of the seasoned meat paired well with the sauces. I usually order lemon pepper wings and fried rice kids size which is perfect for me, but they got rid of that option in online ordering so I was forced to buy an expensive $15 5pc wing box that I wasted after eating 2 wings and 3 forceful bites of rice. Wings could have used more LP seasoning and fried rice was a little mushy. It should automatically be made with egg. Shouldn't have to pay extra for that. Also for the price it should come with an egg roll like the other box options. Beware, prices are higher online than in restaurant when ordering. Maybe by $1 or 2. Thai tea was a no for me.
