It's been a while since my last visit. Menu expanded and the interior is closed. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Arrived during lunch time and place was buzzing.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Placed my order at the counter for the bowl with grilled pork and egg roll with fried rice. After ordering, you get a number and find an open table. Service was fast. It did not take long before food arrived. The egg roll was crispy and came out hot. The pork was well marinated. It was cut a bit thick so some pieces were chewy. Came with the fish sauce that complements the meat. Fried rice was decent. Overall, this is decent place for Vietnamese fast food. Plenty of choices like banh mi, wings and others.

Had to leave another review unfortunately. I have dined in and been at this restaurant about 3 times this past week because I love the curry. Unfortunately I ordered a drink and filled it at the tea stations and once I got home while drinking the drink I noticed a roach floating in my drink. Not only did I immediately throw up it was small enough that is came out of the dispenser here. I was horrified and livid and when I called they were pretty nonchalant about it. Even though I had my drink comped the idea of drinking something for the past 10 minute not knowing their was a roach inside is extremely unsettling! I could've swallowed that! Gross! Good food but I won't be back. Yuck yuck yuck yuck

Roostar has been on my Houston radar for some time. If you've followed me over the years Yelp I'm Rooster to the local long term Austin peeps. Obvs, if you manipulate a vowel I was destined to try this place. First locations weren't exactly close to my adopted H-Town hood. We arrived on Saturday after a concert the night before in Louisiana. Hit some pawn shops and sat off Westheimer searching Yelp for something familiar or new. Don't know when this location opened but it's a welcomed edition to a growing local dynasty. Simple order at the counter process. Grabbed our drinks and waited for our food. Only one gripe. You order an appetizer; it comes with the entrees. It should come before your main dish arrives. With that said the chips and "dip" was a nice start. The provided curry (with beef) is seasoned perfectly. My box with noodles, pork, and eggroll was a nice dish. The fish sauce was subtle but flavorful. I also liked the sweet chili option as well. Her box with shaved Ribeye, salad, and eggroll also wowed. Expand to Austin!!

The food was delicious. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The restaurant was clean.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was overall good. I had an employee ignore me but everyone else was super attentive. Not sure if the employee just didn't hear or see me. I'd definitely return.

Roostar Vietnamese Grill has been in this location for a while and the whole time I haven't explored their menu and dishes. Many times I've come across these branches and they always seem to dilute the quality of the product that is produced for the masses. I have to say that Roostars or at least this location is legit. I've explored their menu and their bahn mi and the quality and size are worth getting. The previous times I've ordered their vermicelli bowls the first time I tried their grilled pork which is a fan favorite and this last time I ordered their pork belly. Each bowl along with their protein comes with lettuce, carrots, peanuts, fried onions, cilantro, cucumber and an egg roll. All very tasty with a balanced amount of protein and vegetables. I would also recommend a side of their egg rolls too. Perfect crispness and plenty of proper filling. I would also recommend their Thai Tea or Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Definitely give any Roostar Vietnamese Grill a try.

The Special Banh Mi, Grilled Pork Box, bulgogi fries
    Christy L.

The only reason Roostar is getting a four star is because of the special bahn mi. If it weren't for the bahn mi, I would not frequent rooster nearly as much. My sister and I ended up ordering the special bahn mi, the grilled pork box and the Bulgogi fries. The special bahn mi: this bahn mi featured a variety of cold cuts, pork belly and the best and most unique part of this sandwich: the pate. Everything was so delicious together. The bread was nicely buttered, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich also featured a nice array of fresh vegetables that paired well with the rich meats. I finished my meal and went back to order a bahn mi to-go. The grilled pork plate: this plate of meat was very subpar. The grilled pork was not flavorful enough. The texture was a little bit mushy, and overall there was nothing appealing about this plate that would set it above its competitors. The plate was expensive, and the portion size was also quite small. The Bulgogi fries: these fries were my least favorite dish of our meal. First of all I did not expect to get potato wedges. I feel like Bulgogi fries only go well with crispy straight fries. The Bulgogi on top with thick, not thin and saucy like Bulgogi should be. I will not be ordering this dish again. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Overall, the service was nice and the ambiance inside gave off a good vibe.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I would come back but, only for the bahn mi.

Ca Phe Sua Da is legit.

Did they get rid of the papaya salad!?

Yes. I asked cashier on 10-10-21 and they no longer have it.

Did you recently change your fried rice recipe?

i went in recently and the managers were complaining to kitchen staff in a group meeting that they are very inconsistent with food prep and execution. their food always tastes a little different because they don't stick to recipe.

Why did Roostar get rid of the Agave Vanilla Cream Soda (from Stubborn Soda)? That was the best one!

Pretty sure it was Stubborn Soda that discontinued it. No longer at Velvet Taco either.

The filling is placed in a pan and then a thin layer of batter made with tumeric and coconut milk yellow batter is poured on top. You wrap the lettuce around the bánh xèo/bánh khọt and dip it in the fish sauce. I got the bánh khọt and the bò né. Bánh khọt is like a mini, thicker version of bánh xèo and came with nine pieces. Their bánh khọt was crispy, sweet and savory, and went well with the fish sauce. Although the portions initally look small, they are very filling. The bò né was filling and sizzling when it came out. It also came with a side of salad. The meat was tender. I really liked the bánh khọt and would definitely come back for them. I couldn't have been more wrong. Xeo Yum (#1) as it turns out is one of the most legit Vietnamese places in Midtown serving up some of the city's best banh xeo and banh khot. Located inside of a Food Hall (#2) in the back corner, they have low-key become a destination and without question, the most popular stall in the entire place. The fan base didn't happen overnight but is a direct result of Chef Cuong Nguyen's commitment to quality Vietnamese fare. Banh Xeo is their signature item, which is also known as a sizzling crepe or pancake made of rice flour, tumeric, and coconut milk. The banh xeo holds well, is perfectly crispy, and is nicely stuffed with an assortment of beans sprouts, shrimp, and some of the best grilled pork belly I've had. Another specialty item that doesn't get enough mention is their banh khot, which is similar but has a mini muffin / cupcake like appearance made in a specialty cast iron mold. This version is wonderfully crispy and pairs perfectly with fresh greens and fish sauce with some funk. It is my favorite item here. Some have argued they also serve one of the best bo ne (#3), the Vietnamese version of steak and eggs served in a skillet. The chunks of beef are nice and tender with just a tad of char, served with two fried eggs, and a banh mi baguette with a mix of butter and spare. Normally I think of spam or sausage included with the meats, but Chef Cuong's spin is with cherry tomatoes. It's a different approach and I'm not mad at it. Folks not looking for this can shoot for bo luc lac, aka shaking beef, which is also recommended. The staff here is sweet, hard-working, and very friendly. They also make a mean Vietnamese coffee and offer free iced self-serve water. The prices are what I would expect in a Midtown food hall, and there's plenty of seating. Anyone checking out the food hall need to make Xeo Yum as part of their eating itinerary. __________ (#1) A play on the Vietnamese sizzling crepe, Banh "xeo" and yum" (#2) Previously the Conservatory and now Stestí Food Hall. When I arrived there was nobody dining in the restaurant, that was a bit worrying, but I figured it was a bit early for the dinner crowd and late for the lunch crowd. Food & Drink - 4.5* First up was the noodles, I enjoyed them, but I wouldn't say the hype I'd heard about from some others was there. They had nice flavor, but there just wasn't anything "special." 3.5* Then it was on to the crawfish, and my oh my. Superb, the flavor is delicious and unique. This more than made up for the noodles dish. The potato and corn was good too. Service - 5* Solid. When I first arrived the owner was quietly reading a newspaper and eating his own lunch. He paused to greet me and advised that I could sit anywhere. He provided water and adequate time to determine what I wanted to order. The food came out quickly and he checked in a few times to make sure everything was ok. As time went by, the crowd of folks showing up increased quite a bit and he still managed to check in on tables consistently. Pricing - 4* This is where it was odd. Always subjective but I found the noodles to be overpriced for not only the size but what I felt was a pretty simple dish. The crawfish on the other hand was priced very competitively and made up for the overpriced noodles. I provided pics of the menu for someone to make their own assessment but in general I thought many of the dishes were pricier than they probably should be. I know inflation is certainly killing many businesses and consumers but even these felt a bit off. Overall - 4.5* This is definitely going to be one of my go tos for crawfish when in the area. The flavor is fantastic, the pricing is good, the size of them were solid. There are a couple of other dishes I may try on the next visit. The restaurant is clean, the owner is very nice, and it's a nice low key space to just enjoy a good meal with friends or family.

The guy who answered the phone wasn't the friendliest, but I decided to roll the dice anyway, and I'm glad I did because the food was solid. We started with the egg rolls. At $10.95 for five pieces, I thought they were a little pricey. They came out piping hot and fresh from the fryer with a great crunch, and the fish sauce was delicious. My only complaint was the lettuce--they only gave us one piece. What am I supposed to do with one piece of lettuce? The Canh Chua Tôm had the perfect level of sourness, exactly how I like it. The shrimp were a little overcooked, but the medium-sized bowl was a generous portion. The Cá Kho Tộ was cooked perfectly. The sauce was rich and savory with a hint of sweetness, though I would've liked just a touch more salt. Pair it with a bowl of rice and some soup, and it's hard to beat. Overall, this place was solid. Is it better than my grandma's? Absolutely not--but that's a tough standard to live up to. It definitely satisfied the craving, and yes, I'd come back.
