It's been a while since my last visit. Menu expanded and the interior is closed. Arrived during lunch time and place was buzzing. Placed my order at the counter for the bowl with grilled pork and egg roll with fried rice. After ordering, you get a number and find an open table. Service was fast. It did not take long before food arrived. The egg roll was crispy and came out hot. The pork was well marinated. It was cut a bit thick so some pieces were chewy. Came with the fish sauce that complements the meat. Fried rice was decent. Overall, this is decent place for Vietnamese fast food. Plenty of choices like banh mi, wings and others.

Roostar has been on my Houston radar for some time. If you've followed me over the years Yelp I'm Rooster to the local long term Austin peeps. Obvs, if you manipulate a vowel I was destined to try this place. First locations weren't exactly close to my adopted H-Town hood. We arrived on Saturday after a concert the night before in Louisiana. Hit some pawn shops and sat off Westheimer searching Yelp for something familiar or new. Don't know when this location opened but it's a welcomed edition to a growing local dynasty. Simple order at the counter process. Grabbed our drinks and waited for our food. Only one gripe. You order an appetizer; it comes with the entrees. It should come before your main dish arrives. With that said the chips and "dip" was a nice start. The provided curry (with beef) is seasoned perfectly. My box with noodles, pork, and eggroll was a nice dish. The fish sauce was subtle but flavorful. I also liked the sweet chili option as well. Her box with shaved Ribeye, salad, and eggroll also wowed. Expand to Austin!!

The food was delicious. The restaurant was clean. The service was overall good. I had an employee ignore me but everyone else was super attentive. Not sure if the employee just didn't hear or see me. I'd definitely return.

Roostar Vietnamese Grill has been in this location for a while and the whole time I haven't explored their menu and dishes. Many times I've come across these branches and they always seem to dilute the quality of the product that is produced for the masses. I have to say that Roostars or at least this location is legit. I've explored their menu and their bahn mi and the quality and size are worth getting. The previous times I've ordered their vermicelli bowls the first time I tried their grilled pork which is a fan favorite and this last time I ordered their pork belly. Each bowl along with their protein comes with lettuce, carrots, peanuts, fried onions, cilantro, cucumber and an egg roll. All very tasty with a balanced amount of protein and vegetables. I would also recommend a side of their egg rolls too. Perfect crispness and plenty of proper filling. I would also recommend their Thai Tea or Vietnamese Iced Coffee. Definitely give any Roostar Vietnamese Grill a try.

The Special Banh Mi, Grilled Pork Box, bulgogi fries
    Christy L.

The only reason Roostar is getting a four star is because of the special bahn mi. If it weren't for the bahn mi, I would not frequent rooster nearly as much. My sister and I ended up ordering the special bahn mi, the grilled pork box and the Bulgogi fries. The special bahn mi: this bahn mi featured a variety of cold cuts, pork belly and the best and most unique part of this sandwich: the pate. Everything was so delicious together. The bread was nicely buttered, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The sandwich also featured a nice array of fresh vegetables that paired well with the rich meats. I finished my meal and went back to order a bahn mi to-go. The grilled pork plate: this plate of meat was very subpar. The grilled pork was not flavorful enough. The texture was a little bit mushy, and overall there was nothing appealing about this plate that would set it above its competitors. The plate was expensive, and the portion size was also quite small. The Bulgogi fries: these fries were my least favorite dish of our meal. First of all I did not expect to get potato wedges. I feel like Bulgogi fries only go well with crispy straight fries. The Bulgogi on top with thick, not thin and saucy like Bulgogi should be. I will not be ordering this dish again. Overall, the service was nice and the ambiance inside gave off a good vibe. I would come back but, only for the bahn mi.

Ca Phe Sua Da is legit.

Roostar rocks. The bahn-mi is the thing to get. And the Vietnamese iced coffee. And the rice boxes. Everything is great! When I'm in Houston I typically will drive 30min to pay a visit to this place.

We had some goodies delivered and they were amazing. My wife enjoyed her grilled chicken box and a fried eggroll. We got some massive and tasty curled french fries for our granddaughter...she loved them. I thoroughly enjoyed a chopped ribeye Banh Mi with a fried egg and a dash of sriracha sauce, the fried egg was amazing, fried over medium with yolk running all over the other goodies. Their banh mi beef is far superior to most other contenders, tender with over the top flavor....we'll be back in person soon. We ordered over 30 dollars so we got a free blonde cinnamon brownie.

    Beef Alphabet Soup Bowl
    Tom L.

I came from Austin, I've seen tiktok videos of Roostar and the food is good, as advertised that I saw online. The alphabet soup is very good, basically it's the beef broth from pho so it's a familiar taste. Good flavors from the soup, a tad too oily for me. Nice salt balance. The banh mi is good, I've had plenty of banh mi in my life, this one is a good example. Fluffy bread, crispy exterior and nice soft inside. Definitely the bread is very good. The pate is yummy, earthy flavor and creamy at the same time. Love the overall mixture of pickled vegetables with the slices of meats. Great example of banh mi and the price point of $8 is not bad. I like the sandwich but not in love with it. I would have preferred slightly more meat, maybe 1 more layer will do. Every bite is more bread, the first I taste is bread, then the meats, and then the pickled vegetables. I would have preferred a slightly more pickle taste on the greens, more meat, and then we are talking! But yes good sandwich.

We decided to try this place for lunch since the reviews looked promising. I believe we created our own box. I got rice and chicken, and my boyfriend got noodles and pork. I did not like the rice at all. It tasted really bland and mushy. The chicken had a nice lemongrass taste. I loved what my boyfriend got. The noodles with the pork and the veggies were an excellent choice. The inside is spacious and they were pretty busy. Next time I want to try the banh mi sandwiches, since most of everyone was eating them at the restaurant.

Banh Mi and BEEF Gogi Fries
    Brett N.

Why 5 stars? Because this is definitely one of the best banh mi spots in Houston. --- --- --- And the only thing more prevalent in Houston than banh mi is Tex-Mex, so that's some pretty high praise. Actually, it's unfair to just call this an banh mi shop because they have a ton of great options on the menu. But they have several different types of banh mi, and I really loved the OG. No notes - it was perfect. I also ordered some bulgogi fries and couldn't resist trying the coconut cream corn. Both were home runs. I've never seen coconut cream corn before, but it was everything you'd want it to be and something I think more restaurants should do. The bulgogi fries were really thick and curly, with all of the awesomeness piled on top. The manager hooked me up with a couple samples of the pho and the slaw. The pho was really enjoyable, but the slaw stole the show. I have never had anything quite like it and would never come back to Roostar again without getting this. It's a combination of unique flavors and texture in every bite that must be eaten by every future visitor of Roostar until the end of time. I've had multiple Roostar locations bookmarked for years and was very close to visiting one on several different occasions, but it just was never in the cards. Today, I made sure to finally stop in and am kicking myself for waiting so long!

Did they get rid of the papaya salad!?

Yes. I asked cashier on 10-10-21 and they no longer have it.

Did you recently change your fried rice recipe?

i went in recently and the managers were complaining to kitchen staff in a group meeting that they are very inconsistent with food prep and execution. their food always tastes a little different because they don't stick to recipe.

Why did Roostar get rid of the Agave Vanilla Cream Soda (from Stubborn Soda)? That was the best one!

Pretty sure it was Stubborn Soda that discontinued it. No longer at Velvet Taco either.

Portions are large/filling and we felt the food was delicious and a good value for money. When we arrived the line was long and menus were not available so we had to search for the menu on the website to avoid deciding at the counter and holding up the people behind us. After ordering, tables were cleaned consistently and service was friendly. Only feedback about seating was outside parties would take chairs from other tables and leave them with no seating and not all tables we're shaded. The drinks being available at the bar when it is busy and then food being delivered to the table was a bit clunky. I picked up water and utensils for our party before sitting and would have preferred to have to pick everything up at the counter or have everything brought to the table to avoid multiple trips around when the restaurant is busy.

However, I haven't found myself wanting to come back even though I drive past this area pretty frequently. If I did come back, I'd probably just order the same flavor again because it was that good. Fun fact of the day: a panuozzo is a sandwich made of pizza dough, and that's how they do it here too! The result is a crispy shelled bread with a soft and chewy interior-- a dream to layer on topping and devour :D ** Apple walnut burrata kale salad (5/5)-- despite lacking the sautéed cinnamon apples advertised in the description (the fresh ones were still yummy!), this salad was still madly delicious! Baby kale massaged in balsamic vinaigrette was topped with creamy burrata, making each bite a balance of acidic, sweet, and creamy. Definitely a good pick for burrata fans-- mmm, so good! We used the pieces of bread to sop up the sauces of our other dishes :) ** Vodka pasta (4/5)-- a simple but well executed dish with mezze maniche or a wider, shorter version of rigatoni. The sauce was creamy and flavorful and studded with pieces of flavorful, salty pancetta. It was served hot :) ** Maialino panuozzo (4.5/5)-- the bread was so delicious, as it was chewy and airy and held up well against the toppings. The porchetta was meaty, and I couldn't really discern the crispy eggplant or taste the spicy mayo, but I loved it; the overall flavor was mild and not too salty. MT thought it was too mild and said next time we would order something heavier sounding like the truffle sandwich. But he still enjoyed it, and I thought it was the best sandwich I've had in recent memory! Ingredients tasted fresh and high quality. :) ** Arancini (4/5)-- this fried risotto ball was dressed up and heated before served to us at the table. It's rich, hot, and creamy! Not much ragu or meat in the middle (more so cheesy rice), but it came topped with meat sauce. I'm not an expert, but these were really big and tasty to share. The man at the counter was very friendly and thanked us for coming. It was heart-warming to see him excitedly speaking Italian to an elderly couple walking in too.
