We went today Friday mom an daughters day out all the food was delicious, fried fish, eggplant, smothered squash, fried chicken, baked chicken, coleslaw like we make at home. If you leave hungry it's not their fault, so full ready for a nap, but off shopping we go. We came late at the end of the lunch hour. I was expecting fabulous after reading reviews. We were disappointed that the fried chicken was a little on the bland side; the fried eggplant not crispy and mainly crust not eggplant; the chicken and dumplings could have used more chicken (maybe other people picked out the chicken before it got to us). For us, the vegetables could use more seasoning and we do understand maybe why there is not a lot of seasoning for most. read more

Years ago food was not the sole focus of dining. People got together to socialize while eating. The Dinner Bell in McComb Mississippi transports the guest back to a by gone lifestyle. It's in an OLD house. It has a set menu. It is open on Tuesday through Sunday for lunch. They will open for dinner if you make reservations.They have a website that gives directions, shows the menu, and the price for lunch. The food is on a giant Lazy Susan built on the table .They seat you and ask what you're drinking. You have 3 choices Iced water, Iced Tea, and Iced Sweet Tea. Lemon slices ,sweet and low sugar substitute, salt pepper, hot sauce are on the Lazy Susan. Since it is essentially an "all you care to eat buffet " with the refill pitchers on the table there's not much interaction with the staff.They are very nice. They bring the food out straight from the kitchen so it's hot. If you let them know nicely that your table is out of an item they will promptly get more if it's still available. It reminds me of those great communal suppers at church , and at my Grandparents. You sit at a large round table that seats 20. If you get there near the end of the lunch rush they will take chairs out of the table to give more elbow room. The thing that made this a great lunch for myself and family was the communal dinning with complete strangers and the act of polite conversation, that usually starts with "would you spin the Fried Chicken in my direction please"and then followed by " where are you from?" that makes it such a fun experience. Seated at our table there were fellow travelers, one was a guy who wrote for the T. V. show Futurama, a Minister and his family, and some locals. You get the chance to engage in conversation with new and interesting people. There were a few negatives. I drove there from Baton Rouge today for the first time. There was road construction and where I needed to turn to get there was not allowed by the road crew. I called the restaurant. The owner Mr.Buddy Davis not only gave me directions but stayed on the line to make sure I did not get lost! t's in an OLD house. It has old fashioned doorknobs on the doors and could really use some "sprucing up" with a couple of gallons of paint. It is clean but it's dingy with the repetitive use that comes from a lot if people. The food is old fashioned Southern food. That is quite a change from what most of us are used to now.Yes it's Southern Country food and it's good...but not Great. Most of the meat dishes are fried. The Fried Chicken is good...not great. I'm pretty sure there's real butter in everything except the Coleslaw, Potato Salad, and dessert. The food is heavy. The squash, yams, and the sweet potato casserole has too much sugar in it. There was so much sugar in the sauted onions and squash they tasted like candy. The rolls were like something out of the bread isle at the grocery store. The cornbread had so much flour it was white. It was also very dry. Since it's a set menu you are limited to what they're serving that day. It's buffet all you care to eat so if you get there at the end of the lunch run and they're out of something why it's too bad because they close in an hour and cook's not starting a new batch. I've had better Southern Country food at restaurants like Cracker Barrel or the Blackeyed Pea but not as much fun. Would I make a special trip and drive 2 hours to eat there? NO. If I was in McComb on a Tuesday - Sunday at lunchtime would I go back? Yes. Is it worth checking out if you're anywhere near? YES. read more

Such a great experience! A buffet right at your table. You sit at a huge 18 people round table with a Lazy Suzie. All the food is cooked and displayed beautifully.... Mind you, it's great southern food! You sit with a bunch of strangers, but at the end of your meal....... You will walking out knowing something about them. Highly recommended.... A great experience. Gives you a feel for the South. Staff extremely helpful and friendly. Round tables. Food moves on large circle in middle so you don't have to get up. It was $12 for lunch on Thursday. You could eat at much as you wanted. All the great Southern classics were there but my favorite was the fried chicken and sweet potatoes. The choices on the table included pork chops, fried eggplant, lots of different vegetables, dumplings , iced tea, sweet tea, and amazing deserts. The peace cobbler was outstanding as was the banana pudding. Everything included for just $12. Tremendous value for the price. Great experience. Not like a regular buffet since you didn't have to get up and walk around to get the food. It came to you on a large circular table. The staff at the Mississippi welcome center as we entered Mississippi from the South suggested the place......they were right. A great place to eat. Not far from I-55. read more

I can't believe I have not contributed a review to this restaurant. I have been going here for at least 30 years. It may be that I have been as much - trying to watch the weight - since I began reviewing on Yelp. This place has not changed much over the years. As stated in other reviews, this is Southern home cooking that is served family style around a lazy Susan. One of the unique features is that you sit with others around the table - unless your group is large enough to fill a table. The table sizes may vary, but I think they seat around 12. You can have as much interaction as you like - you will inevitably have to interact when moving the table. This may cause some people a little discomfort, but you move the table around to get the food. You have to be careful to coordinate this with the others at the table. There are times when the food you want keeps going. You will learn that the table will stop and you can move the food you want to you. Although it is a little tricky, everyone (including myself) finds a way to get enough (too much) food. They always have fried chicken - which is very good. They are also known for their fried eggplant. The last time I visited, I realized that I like the eggplant because of the thick and crispy Italian bread crumb coating and the ketchup. The eggplant just becomes a vehicle for those ingredients. They have a variety of vegetables and dessert. During my last visit, I noticed that they changed how people were seated. It used to be that you needed to wait until there were enough people to seat a table at once. This ensured that the food was set down hot at the same time the people were ready to eat. This time, we joined a table already in progress. This meant that some items were a little cold, but we didn't have to wait to be seated. Not sure which method I prefer, but it did not decrease my enjoyment of the meal. The severs regularly come to the table and replace with hot dishes. Some days the owner is super friendly and some days he ignores his customers to the point of us having to leave without service. I guess this is dependent upon other guests that are dining and are more important to assist than little ole us. The food is home made the servers are super nice and friendly but we know most of them personally and only still dine there because of them not the owner... So support the staff so they can keep a job it's worth a stop by. read more

We went there for Thanksgiving dinner, and drove 2 hours to get there. I was disappointed. I hadn't eaten there in a long time and expected more. I expected traditional Thanksgiving food. No Turkey, no pumpkin pie. Desserts were very skimpy. When something was requested it took a long time to get there and all was lukewarm. The food for the most part was good. I have only been there once; and it was delicious. My daughter and I stopped to eat there, on the way to Jackson, MS. We were sitting with a group of older people and some younger children ages 9 - 15. The older people and younger children were putting their fingers in the plates of food, when it was their turn to get their helping. A few picked up a piece of Chicken, with their hands, and decide that was not the piece they wanted. . Also, some of the kids where playing with the table. Either they would stop it from turning at all; or they were spinning it real fast; when it was not their turn to get food. So, next time I go; it will be with a group of people that I know. read more

i've eaten at the dinner bell since i was a toddler--it's never failed to delight my tastebuds. i'm sorry e.s. had a bad time--i'm guessing s/he isn't southern, but, a transplant from some other part of this great nation. the food at the bell is just what i grew up with--lush flavors, crispy chicken, great veggies, an atmosphere that makes you feel warm and cozy. if you don't have time to sit down, you can get a plate to go--and, that, too, is well worth the cost and the time to put it all together. my mother and i no longer fix a full on southern sunday lunch--we just get the dinner bell to do it for us. never change, dinner bell. never, ever. read more

I remembered The Dinner Bell experience from my childhood and on a recent trip to Biloxi, we made a special trip to McComb...and we were NOT disappointed!! It was very close to what I remembered (of course, that WAS 50 years ago!) My husband had never experienced anything like this, and had a wonderful time, and really loved the food. Fun little place for home style type food.

The Dinner Bell is by far my favorite buffet. Every time we are in town we come here. Although I've only eaten here twice and was first introduced to it last year when I was 13, I can honestly say it is my favorite restaurant in Mississippi and is worth coming from Louisiana any day. I recently ate here today for lunch, October 15, 2016, my favorites include the fried chicken, red beans & rice, brownies, the sweet tea, the hospitality, and service. My sister is IN LOVE with the chicken & dumplings. This place reminds me of how food from the south is supposed to taste, forget the McDonalds and Burger Kings. You don't connect to the people around you anywhere else because no other restaurant seats more than one family at one round table with a lazy susan which can kind of force communication. There is plenty of food to go around and as soon as one dish is empty the waitresses come out with more HOT, cooked, fresh, food. They open at 11 so be there as soon as possible, there may be a line, but trust me, they won't be long. Bottom line is... your visit will be so worth it, between the people, the hospitality, and the delicious, savory, southern food, you'll be bound to have a great experience. read more

I gave this place 4 stars because of the entire package. I'd reference a terrible review from 2 others which was puzzling as every weekend we could count the chartered buses from Louisiana dropping off 1-2 bus loads of diners taking over the Dinner Bell. I'm a non-southener who lived there for 10 years and have to say I prefer to eat healthy but realize I won't live forever and thus indulge myself from time to time to possibly the best fried chicken EVER! No it isn't excessively greasy, salted or seasoned beyond recognition- it is just perfect. I enjoy the chicken and dumplings, and banana pudding along with the rest as well. The staff is friendly, attentive and most welcoming and this makes this an enjoyable experience all around. Now if you enjoy the overly spicy and excessively salted foods you find in NOLA then you'd probably find this fare bland, but to someone who enjoys eating the broad spectrum of small diners to fine seafood in Seattle, lamb and wine in Napa, or Cioppino in San Francisco and blackened redfish at K. Paul's in NOLA then you will appreciate what this family owned restaurant has to offer-flavor. read more
