I went to this restaurant based on the high reviews from this site as well as other sites that sang the praises of this restaurant. I drove well over two hours JUST TO GET THERE and once we were there we had to wait until they had enough people to seat a whole table, no problem there. Once we sat and we got to look at the food I was immediately disappointed. A good portion of the items on the table were canned vegetables, black eyed peas, lima beans, green beans, beets, and some sort of canned corn salad. Everything was served in hard plastic bowls that rotated on a dais and was constantly being refreshed/reheated by wait staff. Many of the reviews I read expressed a grand fondness for the fried eggplant. I wasn't so sure about that not a big fan to begin with, but this was also disappointing, crispy on one side, soggy on the other and the sponginess of the eggplant itself was not appealing. There was however, one exceptionally good item on the table that saved this from being a complete and total waste of time. The fried chicken was absolutely outstanding, and I would opt to go back just for that but ONLY if I was in town for something else. There was also an assortment of "desserts" if that is what you can call them. There was a brownie/flourless chocolate cake abomination, some canned banana pudding concoction, there may have been bread pudding, I am not sure, and a slice of pie that disappeared as soon as it was on the dais, it never made its way to me before it was gone. The concept is actually quite unique and the experience was delightful, however the execution falls way short regarding the food. I would love to recommend the restaurant but it you are an adventurous eater, I would tell you to pass on this one as it is not worth getting up early, leaving two hours before the restaurant opens to get there during their paltry hours of 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then having to drive back home with regret and your dinner sitting in your gut like a stone. read more

This was a neat experience. Think buffet, but sitting at a table with a lazy Susan and a lot of other strangers getting a variety of entrees and sides and desserts. I tried to sample as much as I could. Some things I like a lot more than others. I would go back just for the fried green tomatoes. The fried chicken was also good. I liked the variety. Biscuits were a little dry. My biggest issue is that the food was mostly lukewarm at best. I think it would have been so much better served even warm because cold food makes me feel like it isn't fresh. I appreciate that the menu does change up daily. I wish there was a way to identify what each dish is was. I'm not too picky but someone else might be. The service was probably the best thing there. It is in an old house and the tables are large so it's quite cozy. They are only open during lunch hours. This is not somewhere I think I would drive out of the way for, but I would go back if in the area or passing through again. read more

The Dinner Bell is such an historical treasure! It's the only remaining revolving table restaurant I know of in MS and we try to visit when we are in the area. The old house is a full of character and the owners are welcoming and hospitable. Even when really busy, the wait goes quickly since tables are seated 12 or so at a time. The fare is homestyle comfort food. My Cajun kids wish it was more spicy, but I'm sure they are in the minority. Standout items are the fried eggplant, fried chicken, and fried pork chops - there seems to be a fried theme here! On our last visit, the corn salad and meatball stew were new to us and also outstanding. We hope to continue visiting for many years to come! read more

Buffets might be a past thought during these Covid times but this is not your typical buffet. Every day there is a different spread of items on a lazy Susan and they are spacing you out in smaller groups at tables with locals and visitors and plenty of hand sanitizer just to make sure you are covered. We went on a Saturday so there was a menu of fried chicken, ribs, sausage, sides, and desserts. Plenty of fried eggplant which they are known for as well. If the table wants more of a certain item just request it and it will be on its way shortly. The sweet tea is sweet and the food is great. We took an hour and a half drive and would do it again. Hospitality and the food sold me on this place after constantly hearing about it. Take the road trip and come support this local charm. read more

I'm horribly gluten intolerant and couldn't find any reviews regarding food items being GF. I called the restaurant, and the manager said most of their vegetables were safe. I ate my weight in Lima beans, green beans, and blackeyed peas. I was so incredibly full, but it was SO good. I grew up going to Dinner Bell after or for family gatherings (my dad grew up in McComb, and his sisters are still in the area). I remember the service always being remarkable, and the food was that good, Southern cooking. Years later, nothing has changed (hallelujah). (Pre 'Vid visit) I'd been wanting to hit the Dinner Bell in downtown McComb for some time. On the way back from my Southern hot dog quest, I drove another couple hundred miles out of my way to take advantage of time and opportunity. The Dinner Bell is only open Tuesday thru Sunday for lunch, 11A - 2P, so you have to time a visit from out of town just right. The Bell serves its meals family style, at round tables that sit 18. Atop the table is a huge "lazy susan," laden with entrees, salads, side dishes, desserts, and icy pitchers of sweet ice tea. On a typical day, you might find any of the following: fried chicken, carved ham, turkey, chicken and dumplings, meatloaf, catfish, ribs, liver and onions, white rice, dirty rice, gravy, sweet potato casserole, coleslaw, greens, green beans, black-eyed peas, okra, red beans, corn, biscuits, rolls, corn bread and a multitude of desserts. Sundays at the Bell are even more lavish. I dare say it's the best fried chicken I've "ever et anywheres," and I don't usually give a hoot about fried chicken. The 50 year old restaurant specializes in "comfort food" and has been in its present location, a restored home from the early 20's, since 1959. The restaurant has passed through several generations of owners, and the current proprietors, although new to the Bell, are old-timers in the area, and have continued the traditions, menu, and service of the Bell without missing a beat. The Bell is available in the evenings for private parties. You need a minimum of 36 people for that. Otherwise, weekday lunches are $8.50, Friday and Saturday it'll cost you a sawbuck, and on Sunday, be prepared to drop $12.50 a person. Well worth the price. Well worth the drive. This is more than likely going to be the least popular review on this page for The Dinner Bell so I'm apologizing to those who love it. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon after a funeral service right there in McComb and the place was hopping! The folks were friendly. Wait staff was extremely on top of their game and kept bringing fresh dishes out so that things didn't get cold and were constantly replenishing. The experience of the lazy Susan table and eating with people you don't know was kind of a neat experience. For those reasons mentioned, I give this a 2.5/3. As a girl who was raised in the kitchen cooking food like this, I wasn't really impressed with the food. All of the vegetables were sweet and were like mush. The fried chicken was delicious--I'll give them that. The red beans were also pretty good. The desserts were either super dry (chocolate cake was hard), or tasted like canned fruit compote with no cobbler crust. They also weren't warm. Cornbread was dry as all get out and the chicken and dumplins lacked flavor. The price for two of us to eat a Saturday lunch that I could've cooked ten times better was way steep ($55 for two minus tip). If you don't have anyone in your family that can cook like this already, then certainly enjoy this place. But if you do...give "em a call and offer to bring the biscuits! read more

The Dinner Bell is an iconic piece of McComb's history. Not only is it a unique and great concept, but the food, service, and entire experience is great too. You sit down at a huge round table, each chair as a plate and utensils in front of it. The entire menu for the day is spread out across the entire center section of the table, and you spin the center of the table to take some of which ever food you want to try. It is all you can eat, the food is replenished as it runs low. Going on Thanksgiving Day was interesting because they cooked and served turkey, ham, rice and gravy in addition to the normal Thursday menu. Almost all of the food was well seasoned and cooked well. The two things that stood out most to me was the fried chicken and fried eggplant. Both were seasoned great and had a great texture from the batter. By far the most popular item is the fried chicken, it is so delicious they have a deal of a job to keep up the supply. Vegetables are almost always overcooked, but no more than grandma use to do. This is unique experience in dining the Dinner Bell is a privately owned local business that has been here inbuisness since the 1950's and it's inside a huge historic 2 story home located in McComb's historic area but they have a big nice parking area .They have 2 humongous round tables that seat something like 18 people and 2 xtra large tables that seat a dozen people I think anyway unless you have enough people to take up a whole table then you join a table. It's actually fun meeting and talking with new people. They have pitchers of sweet tea, unsweetened tea, water & lemon wedges on the table for refills they also have a bowl of ice cubes if you need a soda refill then you have to ask your server but don't fret they must assign a server per table because the service is amazing. The food is all you can eat and it's all served family style at the table and the server keeps fresh hot food constantly coming out & the table has a huge spinning lazy Susan made on it so you can the food of your choice to you ! The meals include unlimited tea, coffee, soft drinks and water and all the entrees, sides, desserts and cornbread muffins you can eat. Today they had smothered steak &gravy, southern fried chicken, deep fried eggplant, dumplings, sautéed yellow squash, field peas, green beans, rice & gravy. Butter beans, turnips, sweet potato casserole, sweet n creamy coleslaw, beets, cornbread muffins and homemade banana pudding. The food was good and the service was fantastic !
