The ambiance is sultry. Perfect for a date or a night cap. The food came out quickly and was very good. The cocktails and mocktails-both delicious.

We went here for some amazing Jazz. We were impressed! The food was delicious; we had hot wings and Cajun fries. Also had the shrimp Nachos. The staff and service was very good. The service was outstanding. The ambiance was trendy and upbeat. We will be back. Check out the free Jazz on Wednesday night from 6pm to 9pm; you will not be disappointed!

Love, love, love this place! Live music on a regular basis with no cover?! Does it get better than that? Ah yes, it does. A menu of apps, small plates, and drinks. A late night food menu, some nights, at that (I find that hard to come by in St. Louis). When people say there is nothing to do in St. Louis, what I hear is, "I'm just unwilling to research or ask knowledgeable friends what they do for fun." If you are an adult who likes a variety of music and a meal or drknk, this is a place that should be on your radar.

The Dark Room: Open Air Concert series I was unaware of the Open Air Concert series. It was delightful! I went on a perfect night with a good breeze. Ptah Williams was playing for Janet Eve's (Krantzberg Art Resident). Dinner was included with my surprise Birthday gift!! A bottle of wine, appetizer, entree and dessert. We started with a bucket of ice on the table and bottle of water. Fans were provided for two-fold process: Keep you cool Get the attention of the hostess/server There are 2 servers during the event to serve (I believe) 12 tables. Our appetizer was served in a pizza to go box: (REMEMBER there was no menu so, I'm going off the photos and what it seems I saw and tasted) ------- 2-plantains or Fried green tomatoes (no one knew exactly what our apps were). there was No menu. 2-corn meal based things (someone thought it was stuffed w/cheese) because it looked like a cheeto cheese puff (see photo) 2-cheese filled empanadas (Dipping Sauces included: watermelon something and aioli something) 2-cream cheese Bruschetta slices. Entree was served in reusable To-Go containers: (There was menu for this) ------ Mojo Grilled Chicken (Boneless Citrus Marinated Chicken thighs), red beans & white rice, tomato salsa, served with 2-deep fried plantain waffles (aioli dipping sauce - on the side). Okay...the food was NOT the best. Out of the appetizers the cheese empanada was the best, it was soft, the cheese was no melty like with a pull.. and it looked store bought. The chicken was charred a bit too much with an over abundance of rice. The seasoning was perfect...but I feel the food was cooked too fast and the rice was slighty over cooked. The plantain was SAD....IT appeared the chef opened a bag of plantain chips, soaked them to a consistency of 'almost' able to mash, added flour and made a patty. Deep fried it and put it on the dish and decided to add a dipping sauce for taste because it was super hard and bland. Plantains are readily available and some already black, ready to be mashed, seasoned and flash fried...not deep deep fried. But you could tell these were from a bag because they had chips stuck to them that didn't get mashed. I was disappointed. I am happy I had wine to drink because we drank the entire bottle...then went out for a proper meal. Dessert was a caramel chip cookie over cooked. DANG what a disappointment. The entertainment was excellent!! The social distancing and safety precautions were perfect! Thank you Dark Room staff. Great job https://www.thedarkroomstl.com/open-air/

Playing (for) just the tip The Dark Room isn't so dark by contrast of extremes on the news/social media today. I highly respect the ability of the musicians & guest singers to actually listen to each other during some improvised guests & solo endeavors. Jazz @ Jazz's best I honestly showed up in a bad mood & watching them listen change change their sound to support another showed patience & talent few have. Yeah, there is an upscale wine bar that also serves cocktails & local microbrews. Local 4 Hands Divided Sky IPA is my usual choice. Yes, I have had interesting & delicious food here. The new venue is beautiful in entrance of the church rehabilitation to the The Grandel theater. However IMHO, the Dark Room is about visiting a different way the world could work. I need to visit on the advertised brunch, but Wednesday w/ Kasimu is always a great break.

I came for brunch. Hubby was s'posed to come too, but chose not to... I went ANYway! I ordered the Seared Salmon & Eggs, all of which was delectable. The music, by Janet Evra, was AWESOME. AND they did the volume right! Such a great combination. I chilled and spent some time, so I went through some specialty cocktails... First, of course, I had the Bloody Mary. It was tasty, but nothing real fancy. Then I switched to the Italian Greyhound, and THEN the Grand, El Cafe. These were wonderful drinks that went perfectly with the jazz. The service was just okay. Would LOVE to come back again!

I've been here a few times and it's been enjoyable. This Saturday 12/13/2021 was the worst. Just a few people at the bar it was very early around 7 and the bar tender was horrible. I ordered a dirty martini and it looked like a rum and coke I put it at the end of the bar and he never came around around and ask about it so we left. If I see him again I'll be sure to turn around and leave

St. Louis seems in limited supply of nice, low key lounges with live music. Especially lounges with live jazz music. It is for this reason that I can't contain myself on how much I love The Dark Room. The Dark Room is located inside the lobby of the Grandel Theatre. I had my first encounter there this past Friday night. The ambiance is nice and intimate, with a cool and dark vibe. tables line around the stage, where a live band plays nice jazz, and soulful R&B as was the case on Friday night. The bar is also nice and large. Here's some Pros and Cons. Pros: - Music: The live music was great on Friday night, and I believe the name of the band was "The Truth". I really enjoyed them. I also liked the soft background music when the band wasn't performing. I kept hearing some of my favorite Neo-Soul and hip hop songs playing in the background throughout the night. The Foreign Exchange, Lion Babe, Jill Scott, and more set nice melodies throughout the evening. - Decent Service: Our waitress was very kind and thoughtful to offer to substitute things for us on the menu (rice instead of cous cous), and other things to try to accommodate us. - Good Happy Hour: If you can make it there at 11pm, then you can be rewarded with a large variety of Happy Hour options for food and beverages. - Flavorful and Uncommon Menu: Although the menu isn't extremely large, everything on the menu sounds superb! I had the lamb meatballs and my friend and I shared the Chicken Artichoke Dip appetizer. The meatballs were very good and as I mentioned earlier, I was able to substitute the cous cous that it normally comes with for rice. The Dip wasn't the best thing I've ever had, but it wasn't bad to try something different. I probably won't get it again. It was hard to make a decision on what to order because everything on the menu sounded great. - Really Good Drinks: For my cocktails, I first had a Manhattan with Rose Water. It was PERFECT! The rose water really added a nice subtle hint to the drink. I loved it! Once 11pm rolled around, I ordered a $3 Bourbon and Diet Coke. It was also very good and really strong! - No Cover: Unlike certain places in town with live music and food service, The Dark Room doesn't charge a cover. Cons (I don't have much to complain about, but...): - Prices: The prices for food and signature cocktails here are not cheap. It's a good thing that they have a Happy Hour menu to combat that. - Happy Hour is too Late: As much as I like the idea of coming to the Dark Room as maybe an occasional late night "after" spot, the fact that you have to wait until 11pm to get the reduced prices on specific items, may prevent me from going there as frequently as I would like. If it were to start at 9 or 10, that would be a little better. But if I am out and am trying to wait that late for my next destination, I will probably either just stay where I'm already at or will be heading home before even making it to The Dark Room. - The Service at the End of the Night: So I gave the pro of "decent" service above. Here's the reason I said "decent" and not "great". After waiting for happy hour to start for an hour, once 11pm hit, the wait staff was no where to be found. They gradually emerged and I could order my second drink. When we asked for the checks, our new waitress asked us what we ordered. That was odd and a little disorganized, but we were honest and told her our correct orders. Still, it was kind of strange to be asked that. All in all, I will definitely go back to The Dark Room! And although there were certain things about it that I'd change, I still enjoyed my time there enough to want to go back and tell others to check it out! There weren't a lot of people there on Friday night so it makes for a good place to relax, unwind, and enjoy yourself. I pray that it continues to thrive so that we (as in STL) don't lose it.

I am generous with the 4 stars here but what can say? First we started off with house made hummus which was compliments of Yelp. Thanks Yelp. Hummus was very good. My husband ordered flat iron steak and it was delicious. I got Italian wedding soup and was disappointed in it. Not much to it and kinda salty. My Caesar salad was meh. I got one of house cocktails and it was good if not a bit on sweet side. Not much alcohol in it so for some that's good and others wouldn't like that. The service was weird - when we had someone at our table they were great but getting them to the table was the hard part. We waited for our bill for quite awhile. We were the 1st people there but yet we waited.

Happy hour drink menu

We visited on a Friday night before visiting some of the nearby museums and galleries that participate in First Fridays at the Grand Center. Happy hour was on, so I was able to get a great glass of red wine at a slightly reduced rate. My husband got a happy hour beer. We also ordered their happy hour pretzels, which were less pretzels than underbaked dinner rools? Definitely wouldn't order them again myself, but my husband (who likes doughy, underbaked things) liked them. An okay place for happy hour. If I went again, I'd definitely want to check them out during some jazz.

Came for dinner on the Monday night and it was pretty empty. Got a signature cocktail and it was fantastic. Also got the pretzel and chicken wing appetizers. The pretzels were amazing, but the chicken wings were not very good. Great intimate spot to chill and listen to awesome music

Started off with a glass of moscato. Ended with two I chose the fried pickles for my appetizer. They were sweet, but very tasteful. I had the pleasure of enjoying the Turkey Club. What sets it apart from any other Turkey Club I've had is the molasses-peppered bacon that comes on it (DELICIOUS). Served on the side was my fave, billy goat chips. Not only was the food good but we enjoyed some music from an artist who sang some jazz, r&b, and a bit of blues. Good vibes.

The last time we were at the Fox, we saw the sign for the Dark Room and said we would try it the next time we came this way. Saturday night we went in without reservations and were lucky to get the last two seats in the room. It's a small place and that night they were going to have live music. If there is something going on at the Fox, make reservations. We started with the artisan mix board. What a great start. Meat, cheese, raspberries and purple grapes. Nuts, olives, pickles and served with crostini. Best cheese and meat board I've ever had and well worth the money. He ordered the curry vegetables and I ordered the lamb meatballs. He said the curry was delicious and my meatballs (served over couscous) were very good also. Would I come back here? Yes, but I will be making reservations.

'ssippi is a new(ish) wine bar set towards the western end of the collection of bars, restaurants, and shops that are the heart of the strip. The inside has a large wrap about bar and some limited seating. There is a very good selection of wine and mixed drinks and an okay selection of beer. The prices are reasonable. There is a very limited food menu which largely consists of snacks rather than proper entrees. So this is a great pre/post drink spot rather than somewhere you would spend an evening. The bartenders were fine. Nothing stood out either in a good or bad way. The mixed drink my wife had was very good. The orange wine I had was good, a bit on the dry side but overall no complaints from either of us. Without a highlight of the spot is the large patio. It is mostly taken up by large bench style seating. So you have to be okay sitting next to strangers. I actually enjoy these types of settings and I ended up chatting up the group to our right. There are a couple tables but they are few and far between. There are some overhead canopies and lights, and there was a nice vibe and energy. I was there and it was crowded. I really enjoyed it. Just two additional things to note. The bathroom line was very long. It must only be one stall. The entire time I was there it was a dozen people deep. The only other downside is that my wife and I felt old. The vibe on a late(ish) Saturday night was mainly 20 year olds. If I was in grad school or a recent graduate I would absolutely adore this place. Even if your 30s this probably is a good vibe. Once you hit 40 though you may feel a bit out of place on busy nights (or it will make you feel young again!)

Versatile, knows…read morehow to treat yo' self, equally at home in yoga pants, ready for a backwoods adventure or dressed to the nines, and doesn't blink at any version of you that walks through the door. That's the vibe. We started on the front patio on a Friday night and quickly realized we'd made a mistake. The doors to the interior were open and the music -- a rock-forward playlist that night -- was loud enough that we considered bailing. Our server, was unbothered when we asked to move up to the rooftop. Where we met with a new bartender and server, London, who rolled with it, got us resettled, and from that point on the night was great. London was clearly handling the bar and most of the rooftop tables, but she was attentive throughout, and made eye contact, which seems a near miracle from many 20-something these days. Bumping the score up just for the flexibility on the table move alone. The food: crab cakes were genuinely good, not life-changing, but well above the weak-crab-cake bar that exists in most of the world, served simply with capers and a small salad. I went off-script and ordered the wagyu burger medium rare with fontina (London mentioned cheddar is the more common pick, but the Fontina offerd a great alternative). The burger was deeply flavorful and cooked exactly right, but here's my one real note for the kitchen: toast the brioche bun. Wagyu medium-rare puts out a lot of juice, and an untoasted bun loses its structural integrity about three bites in. A quick toast would let the bun keep some additional integrate and keep up with the perfectly cooked beef. The pom buff were great, the best elevated patato tots you may come by. Beyond what we ordered, the Greek salad is a longtime go-to -- chopped, with grape leaves and pita, available in a small or large, and easily dressed up into a light meal with or without adding some protein or can be share as a self-dress bruschetta appetizer for the group if you ask for extra bread. The cheese boards are also a reliable pick. The wine list is extensive (it's a wine bar, after all), but they don't sniff at cocktails -- I had a solid fine old fashioned, and my wife shared had a Malbec that paired well with everything. Lots of gluten-free options across the menu, too. What Sasha's gets right is that it has refused to become precious. "Wine bar" reads as pretentious to some people, but this place runs as a neighborhood spot. You'll see college kids dressed way down, couples on dates dressed way up, Hawaiian shirts, oversized sweaters, the full range. It's the kind of place where you can split a bottle with your girlfriends, meet a date for drinks and a quick bite without committing to a full dinner, or roll in for brunch on the weekend. Different times of day, different vibes -- always approachable. 4.7 stars. Loses a few tenths for the front-patio music situation and the weak burger bun, but more than makes up for it on flexibility, food, and overall hang factor.

There were a few open tables, but we were asked to wait by the door while they "got situated." Meanwhile, a walk-in who arrived after us was seated at a table we had been waiting for. When we were finally seated, we were placed in direct sun. I asked if we could move to a shaded table in the corner and was told it was only for parties of three. After explaining we'd just be there briefly for a drink, we were allowed to sit there, but the interaction felt dismissive. From that point on, the experience felt rushed. We were pushed to order quickly, our menus were taken right away, and the check came almost immediately. It made what should have been a relaxed stop feel uncomfortable and transactional. I understand how busy restaurants can get, especially on nice days, but a little more consideration and courtesy would have gone a long way.

I had my first dinner of my stay at Olive + Oak, and it blew me away from the moment I laid my eyes on it. From the unsuspecting street outside, the giant windows glow with the warm, sparkling light from within. An elegant dining room with a beautiful bar and a good amount of hustle and bustle. I felt like I was at an upscale New Orleans joint. Very cozy. Service was just as beautiful. Our server was extremely nice, new the menu backwards and forwards, and rattled off the nightly specials without hesitation. And on top of all of that, when we were getting some stuff to-go, she threw in more bread for us! You can't train that level of service. That's just a good person. Onto the food. We started off with the Blue Crab Gratin (calabrian chili, celery + pretzel bread). This was ooey, gooey, cheesy, delicious, had a fair amount of crab in it, had a nice little kick, and the sliced, crunchy pretzel bread dippers were exquisite. Something seasonal that isn't on their menu anymore, we ordered an Okonomiyaki, which is a savory Japanese pancake, basically, covered in sauce. Wow, this thing was done well. Very reminiscent of the authentic thing I've had in Japan. Very nice. Another dish that isn't on the menu anymore, the Catfish dish. It was slightly Asian and on top of some sort of risotto rice. I can't remember exactly, but I do remember that it was very well cooked, had a nice char. An eclectic dish that came together very nicely. I also got to try some of the Rabbit Crepe (port wine braised rabbit, blueberry, fennel, arugula + kenny's bleu gouda crepe). Some people might shudder at the idea of eating rabbit. Those people need to grow up. Rabbit is one of the most succulent, delicious meats out there, and in this wonderful flavor combination, in a crepe. This chef is genius. I could have downed two of these things. We finished off the night with the recommended Cloud Cake (vanilla chiffon cake, coconut pastry cream, coconut + whipped cream icing). This thing was de-ca-dent. A nice, thicc sponge, a very coconuty cream, and a whipped icing with lots of coconut pulp in it. So heavenly. Overall, my socks were blown off. Not only does St. Louis have good food, this was a better meal than I had in Nashville and Kansas City. Who would have guessed. I would love to come back.

Food was middle of the road. A smoked sirloin sandwich was tasty, though rather well-done. And the order of "salmon cakes", which the menu says is made of "smoked salmon, roast corn, tomato, cucumber, creme fraiche, and capers" was in fact just one cake (not cakes!), smaller than a hockey puck (about 1/2" thick max) and seemed to be made of canned fish, not the bright orange of smoked salmon. It was accompanied by five thin slices of cucumber and three or four halved grape tomatoes. No corn, no capers. It was so boring, and an overpriced disappointment at $23. They had a vast menu of alcohol - we ended up getting a few glasses of wine. Unfortunately, they were not offering food on the day we went, but they partnered with next door, where we were able to order food - which was also really good. When she came back around, we both got the Violet letter (mezcal, crème de violet, citrus, and lemon. Here's where things took a turn.... For two drinks and with no exaggeration, it took well over a half-hour if not longer to get them. The drink itself was smoky, so smoky that it overpowered the rest of the ingredients in the drink, although I tasted hints of violet. Overall, the experience could have been better. I'm willing to give this place another shot, but maybe at a different time when it's not so busy.
