We…read morewalked in to find this bistro housed inside a hotel, so we didn't have high expectations - thought it was just going to be another average brunch. We turned out to be amazed by the food. The Michigan Benedict ($16) was extremely well-made. The thick-cut bacon was crispy and stayed crispy even at the end, after being soaked in hollandaise. It just had that simple balance of fatty fragrance and crunchy bite. The Seafood Omelette ($26) was also really, really nice. The portion of seafood was genuinely generous: I counted at least three scallops, four shrimp, and mouthful after mouthful of lobster folded into a provolone béchamel. Scoop up a piece with the toasted focaccia and it's hard to imagine a better way to start the morning. Service was prompt and the room was cozy and unpretentious. We'll definitely want to be back to try the lunch and dinner menu.

That being picky though, the place feels welcoming and is brightly lit and feels well cared for. I ordered the Pot Roast ($20). It's described as slow roasted with carrots and onions and mashed potatoes. It was fantastic. The meat was tender and delicious. the gravy was perfect without overpowering. The carrots and onions were a great compliment. Plus the real mashed potatoes were made to perfection. Smooth, yet still had the potatoness to the texture. The taste was one of the better mashed potatoes I've had in TC. I don't know what they do th their TC Cherry Coke, but it is spectacular. Lastly for dessert I got their Lava Cake ($7), it was fine, but disappointing after such a great meal. I don't know if it was from frozen or what. However the texture was a little off andvthe taste was only okay. I wouldn't get it again. The service was very friendly and super helpful. Overall a 4 1/2 star review. Since I have to round, I'm going to forgive the dessert and give a full 5 stars. Would I return? Absolutely. Especially if I'm craving Pot Roast.

I am so glad to have found this wonderful place! We came for breakfast. The keyword that drew me in…read morewas "pork belly." The place delivers pork belly in ways I haven't even thought of! It was pretty calm when we came in and we were seated at a spacious table by the bar. I had a terrible time deciding because everything sounded so good. In the end, I went with a surf n turf. Yes, for breakfast. Fried oysters on top of pork belly drizzled with red hot vinegarette and if you didn't think it could get any better, this delicious creation sits on top of poached eggs which sits on top of cornbread. Listen, I'm not a huge fan of bread and cornbread is even a hit or a miss for me but this time, it was a huge hit. I really, really want to find a place close to home that could recreate this dish. What a culinary achievement! And honestly, I was so sad we only had the opportunity to dine here once. All I know is, next time I'm around the area, this is a MUST stop.

I had a wonderful first visit to Sugar to Salt and will definitely be back…read more I ordered the breakfast risotto with a side of the cast-iron cornbread. The risotto was outstanding--loaded with incredibly fresh vegetables, smoky tasso ham, creamy raclette cheese, and one of the best pestos I've ever tasted. I wasn't sure how I'd feel about risotto for breakfast, but it absolutely worked. The cast-iron cornbread was also excellent, especially the honey butter glaze and the whole kernels of corn throughout. The service was warm and friendly, even during a very busy brunch. This is definitely on the pricier side, but I felt the quality of the ingredients, the creativity of the menu, and the care that went into every dish made it worth it. My only food-related criticism was that my poached egg was just slightly overcooked, but it was a very minor issue in an otherwise exceptional meal. My biggest suggestion for improvement would be the acoustics inside the dining room. When the restaurant is busy, the noise level becomes overwhelming and takes away from what is otherwise a fantastic dining experience. I ended up sitting outside, and the patio was peaceful and relaxing. I hope the owners consider adding some acoustic treatment because the food deserves an atmosphere that matches its quality. I'm already looking forward to coming back and trying several other dishes on the menu.

We got to skip the wait and I just grabbed my order from the shelf. I did have to wait at the counter for them to fill my coffee cup, but I appreciated that it was hot and fresh. The space is small, with no dine-in area, but they seem to move through everyone's orders pretty quickly. I got the nosh (Louie's bacon, Tillamook cheddar, egg, and scallion cream cheese) on a black pepper parmesan bagel. You can also choose from a few other sandwich options, including a rotating feature. The bagel and schmear options lean more savory vs. sweet, which is my personal preference. The bagel was chewy and the sandwich held up pretty well, but I do wish it had a bit more shmear so I might add extra next time. The bagel itself wasn't as flavorful as I was hoping in the sandwich combo, but as I got towards the end I was noticing more of the parmesan. I would definitely come back the next time I'm in town.

What I'm trying to say is that it doesn't seem like the people running this place are corporate suites with an inclination to squeeze pennies out of everything. It's as if they genuinely want to feed you and put a smile on your face. If I'm being honest about the food...it was meh. The waitress, bless her heart, told me that I came in right after a huge rush. To me it seemed like the waitress was a bit upset about having to deal with the rush, even though she said they were lucky to have the patronage and she wasn't complaining, she was clearly complaining? Or maybe she was preparing me for what was to come? The bacon was two different kinds of cook times, a couple pieces were completely burnt and a couple pieces were still floppy. The hash browns had been on the griddle for at least an hour. The eggs were cooked well enough but had too much butter in them. Toast had too much butter too. Look, I like butter, I really do, but let me put it on my perfectly toast sourdough. To be fair, when I pulled into the driveway I saw something that reminded me of rehab in my 20s: a man standing in the snowy parking lot, black T-shirt with black mittens on, coffee cup in one hand and cigarette in the other. He was chugging the coffee and sucking down the cigarette like it was his last few minutes on earth. It was truly impressive. He's the chef of the place. The pancake was cooked a tad over, but it was alright. The omelet was large with plenty of meat incorporated. It was unique with the chimichurri sauce. It helped offset the lack of seasoning of the eggs. I also tried the Traverse city cherry salad which had turkey and cherry salad, pecans, dried cherries, Monterey Jack cheese, and tomatoes with a raspberry vinaigrette. The Sausage Gravy omelet, with the house-made sausage gravy, rye toast, and the homemade strawberry jam was terrific. The omelet was not only super tasty, but it was enormous! It was extremely filling and the strawberry jam was excellent! The Chimichurri omelet with gluten free toast was equally flavorful with loads of prime rib and chimichurri sauce both inside and on top. It was so big, it could have been 2 breakfasts. The Chimichurri sauce was spot-on, the prime rib was tender and well-seasoned, but had just a bit too much fat on some of the pieces. The GF toast was far better than most places (it was actually the size of a normal piece of toast, not like the dinky gf substitutes you normally get) and accentuated with that same strawberry jam, took it up a notch! The Avocado Toast (also on GF toast) was good, but the avocado mash had just a tad bit too much lemon in the mix that made it a little cheek puckering; however, the tomatoes were fresh, the goat cheese was generously portioned and tasty, and the egg on topped was cooked to perfection. I'd certainly give this one a 2nd chance. The star of the show? The fresh squeezed OJ! Perhaps the best OJ any of us have ever had...seriously. Everyone in our family agreed, and we all went ham on our glasses of juice (LOL). The outside of the building doesn't lead you to expect the amazing level of food that is coming out of the kitchen. Don't get me wrong - the inside is bright, quaint, cozy, and super clean, but the food speaks volumes at a much higher decibel. Our server, Annika, was utterly outstanding! She was funny, personable, engaging, and informative. She made great suggestions, had great stories, and knew how to sell (she sold us on the OJ by sharing how it was made, how much she liked it, and how it was worth all the work they do to make it because of how good it is). Thank you, Annika, for keeping us laughing and making a normal breakfast an unforgettable family outing! We're already making plans for our next visit when we're in TC again.
