Note: You order at the bar, then sit. Perk being large tables! Ok, extra points here for having Innus & Gunn, my fave Scottish beer. Definitely a decent alcohol selection in general. Pretty large space. It does feel like an odd mashup of a pub and restaurant. Like they have a VERY long bar akin to a nice pub. But nobody stands/sits there. Everyone sits at tables in the main area which looks more like a restaurant. I suppose it is a restaurant, but nobody comes to take your order. You order and pay at the bar, then get it brought to your table. Anywho, didn't eat the food so I cannot comment on main meals. Really just went in for beer and desserts. The desserts were pretty solid and the general menu did look pretty expansive, mainly standard bar food. Seems like a place you'd go with a group of friends. Not a real romantic, date type place. More of a catchup with friends kinda place. And there are plenty of larger tables to accommodate. They have a decent patio out front to sit on, but it seems like it's more the spot people go to smoke, so if you don't smoke, you may wanna sit indoors. Def a local place I'd frequent were I to be lucky enough to live here.

On a trip to Stirling today we decided rather than starting at the bottom of the town we'd start at the castle and work our way down. On the approach road to the castle we spotted this Wetherspoons nestled amongst the buildings, it had an outdoor seating area that wasn't particularly mobbed and looked ideal for a munch given the sunny weather. As it's a Wetherspoons you can pretty much guarantee that what you're going to get will be similar to that experienced elsewhere, with the added bonus of fast efficient service. Just be careful when ordering that they don't automatically upgrade you. The food was as expected pub grub, the outdoor seating area small but comfortable, and the coffee delicious yet still on a budget. To inject a bit of humour (pardon the pun) was the wasps, we were unfortunately plagued by them frequently in what appeared to be desperate thirst as one descended into a can of Scotland's finest orange drink while it's buddies descended on my chilli dog and ice cold juice. The menu came in really useful for wafting them off. The food was so filling though I ended up leaving them some, can't say I'm not good to the wildlife..... Great location, decent service, decent prices, what more could you ask for. Although I did feel quite bad about the emptiness of some similar nearby local businesses.

Still a pretty new looking place that's bright, modern and very clean, with the weather being cold and raining outside I needed a hot drink to warm me up. I sat near the back area of the cafe where I could see a log burner on display, not sure if this was an ornament but could have done with being lit. I chose the large latte with a slice of the fruit loaf, service was quick but the young server placed my order at the opposite end of the table than in front of me, with the knife being placed blade towards me, I've been in the hospitality trade for over 25 years and this is the first time that I've seen this. In the time I was there that was a whole twenty minutes I was asked for my order twice even though I already placed it at the bar, the confusion was that the servers where not assigned a particular section and clearly didn't know what they where doing. The table of two next to me had the same problem. The atmosphere was 4/5 Food & drinks 4/5 Service was a disappointing 0/5

The space is nice - there's lots of room and although it got a lot busier quite quickly after we went in, there was nobody sitting really close to us and it didn't feel crowded. As an aside, I don't often comment on the toilets but I was actually really impressed with the toilets here, they were lovely and I liked the little notice board in the ladies' with local notices on it. The breakfast menu has a great selection, with everything from a full breakfast to pancakes to French toast to eggs benedict to simpler options. And it's really reasonable - french toast with bacon and maple syrup would only set you back £4.50, the full breakfast is under £8. I went for the eggs benedict with crispy bacon, Him Indoors went for the full breakfast. Both were good - not knockout fantastic (one day I'm going to write a book about my hunt for the best eggs benedict in Scotland), but really good and, considering the prices, seriously good value for money. We sat and had a second round of coffees afterwards (the coffee was lovely) and with breakfast and two drinks each for three people it came to around £35. The staff were super friendly, really chatty and the whole atmosphere is warm and welcoming. I'd like to go back to try their evening food as well to see how that compares, but I would definitely recommend it for a good breakfast at a great price.

As mentioned, it looks fairly wee from the outside although it has a fair amount of outdoor seating for sunnier days but as you walk in you realise its like an oddly shaped tardis, walking past the bar it opens up quite far and the back of the building suddenly looks like it'd take several minutes to reach! The decor is all very fresh, pretty sure it's been recently decorated and the toilets are sprakly clean, always a plus point! Anyway. There was a group of 20 odd of us here for an 80th birthday and we were accomodated no problem, including the small demented human in a highchair at one end of the table, and my dad's partner who was in her wheelchair at the other end. Shortly after seating us all and unprompted, a small dish of freshly cooked veg appeared for my niece, along with some butter to mash through them which I thought was a nice touch. It kept her quiet anyway :P The food is a mixture of standard pub fare really, the portions are well thought out and the quality of the food is excellent. There wasn't a single complaint on either side of the table (rare indeed). My only niggle would be that the chips are of the bog standard frozen variety and to be honest, good chips aren't hard to do so there's no need for that. I think 4 of us had steak, all cooked differently (from blue right through to cremated) and they were all considered spot on. For me, they had medium rare down to a tee! We had 4 bottles of house wine on the table, 2 red (1 merlot and 1 shiraz) and 2 white (both Sauv Blanc), myself and my great uncle polished off the reds and I can tell you they were both very, very drinkable. Certainly too drinkable for a school night anyroads, ahem. The food is good value for money and prices are very reasonable although I am suspicious that this is do with the fact they're not well known outwith the local area. I would give this place ago in case that changes!

Haldanes has relatively limited hours but is the best food on campus. As of this term it means a selection of panini, a live theatre meal, a main course with meat, a vegetarian main course, a carvery meal, and a salad bar. The options vary and are different every day, but after awhile you'll notice them cycle through options. I've had meals here that I've only somewhat liked but I've never had anything I dislike, and I have had foods I've really enjoyed. The standards I have for it do rely on the price of a meal being between £4 and £5, but you get what you'd expect and a bit more. They used to have weekly menus listed on the Stirling University's catering site but you now need to visit to see the meals of the day. It's a minor disadvantage but there's usually enough of a variety to find something you'll like every day. The main lunch eating hours are 12-3 now but they're open from 9-4 for just coffee and as a good place to work. It's the main place I eat when I need to eat on campus.
