But no trace of that remains and The City Walls has been very well renovated indeed. When I first walked in, I thought it looked rather fancy! But then I spotted the football on the TV screens and the very slightly Wetherspoons-ish bar area and I realised that it's not quite as posh as the entry-way would indicate. It's actually very large and spacious inside, with lots and lots of seating. The decor is warm, muted, comfortable and done to quite a high standard. There isn't a huge amount of character or atmosphere, but you can't have everything. We had a couple of drinks, which were very nice indeed, and ordered lunch from some grubby, sticky menus. The waiter took our order from the table, instead of us needing to go to the bar to order, which is a nice touch for a pub. The food was really tasty! Myself and my party all seemed to find it really good, decent quality and portion sizes. For the price, which was very reasonable, I don't think you could fault it much.

Being able to reserve the room is about the only thing I like about this place...oh and street parking. It is a completely over the top "Aussie" themed bar. Themed as in it has all the terribly tacky, tourist ideas of Australia. The toilets are named Blokes and Sheilas, there is swamp/beach style decor, and not a single aussie accent on the staff, which I'm actually quite pleased they weren't required to imitate an Australian accent. It's fairly priced, and the food, although I didn't get any this time, is...adequate. The upstairs room has it's own bar, but they have never had it staffed when we've been. It gets quite busy and loud in the main bar area, and is honestly somewhere I'd rather avoid.

There's free WiFi, a couple of TVs and at least one fruit machine that I saw. It has a vibe that I'd associate with a more modern bar rather than a traditional pub but it's not really hipster either. They have a few good ales on the bar (I was drinking Drygate's Glad Eye) as well as cocktails available. We got served quickly by friendly staff who were happy to chat in spite of it being a Saturday night and relatively busy when we arrived. We were told that a DJ would be starting at 9pm. Normally, this would put me off but when he did get started I actually quite enjoyed his set and it wasn't played so loudly that people were forced to abandon their conversations (pet hate of mine in pubs). Having worked in the wonderful(!) town of Alloa for going on 2 years now, it came to my attention that I don't really go places in the area, most likely cause I'm so spoiled with the many amazing establishments Glasgow has. Plans were made to visit somewhere in the Stirling area for dinner since Nicola works nearby and we were between two places - I'm so glad we picked here! The Riverside is fairly new and is in a gorgeous big building beside (as the name would suggest) the river in Dunblane. The staff were absolutely first class from two moment we got there and were so attentive, despite the fact the place was pretty busy as you would expect on a Friday night. We had both had a swatch of the online menu before we came so our order was taken pretty quickly (we did have another look just to be absolutely sure of course!) and the food didn't take too long at all to come - not sure exactly how long because obviously we were gabbing, but it wasn't worryingly quick and didn't seem like a long time either. I should point out that they have dedicated vegetarian and gluten free menus too which is pretty good and not something you see in most places. I went for the sausages and mash with gravy and cabbage, a meal I've eaten in various pub-grub places with varying degrees of success. This was really excellent! Everything was really well cooked, tasty and the cider and apple gravy was just yummy! Now the dessert. Oh. Oh my. We decided on the pudding board to share which consists of their three main desserts - sticky toffee pudding, apple and blackberry crumble and a chocolate pot that comes with SALTED CARAMEL POPCORN. The menu has a lot of standards, and the tastiest thing we had (in my opinion) was the soup. Tasted very homemade and had lots of flavor. I didn't love the fish finger sandwich, but I know the mac'n'cheese was a big hit, alongside the onion rings. Lovely staff too.
