Today when the Red route took us to old town and I saw The White Hart Inn I said to Jan let's do an early dinner there and she agreed. We continued the route and stayed on back to the stop in old town. We love Alfresco dining but it was too cold and windy today. We went inside and the restrauant was packed. It's open seating. No hostess, no sign in. We were lucky and just happened to be standing next to a table that opened. We had been there about 5 minutes. The restaurant/ pub is rich in history, established in 1516. It's small with limited bar seating and prehaps 8 to 10 tables. It is noisy from conversation, tosting and music, but we didn't have a hard time communicating. It has a great vibe. It's a fun venue and popular with the locals. The menu is not large and has several Scottish offerings. To start, Jan was cold and wanted an Irish coffee. I ordered an Innis and Gunn larger. Innis & Gunn is an acclaimed Scottish brewery founded in 2003 in Edinburgh. It had a slightly citrus flavor. Jan ordered muscles and I ordered the steak and ale pie, served with a charred Hispi cabbage wedge, buttered mash and Merlot beef dripping gravy. It was very tasty, very robust flavor. I loved the cabbage; great flavor. I had to look up hispi cabbage and it is a variety of green cabbage. The muscles were good and the broth very nice. We had a lovely time and a good meal. Our good luck at freelancing dining venues while we explore Ireland and Scotland continues.

It's solid pub grub in a cozy interior with an ultra-stocked bar, plenty on tap, and all the classic dishes you'd hope for. After beasting my way up Arthur's Seat, I was in need of something more substantial than café fare. I popped in a bit later than the lunch rush and managed to squeeze in at the bar. And yeah, expect it to be packed--but for good reason. All the classics are on offer here, including fish and chips and sausage and mash. After much deliberation, I landed on the sausage and mash, and it absolutely delivered. Hearty, stick-to-your-ribs food that was exactly what I needed. Delicious! All the other dishes passing by looked and smelled nearly as good. Great meal, great price, an even better location, and friendly staff. The meat was falling apart and tender, the vegetables were perfectly soft, and the puff pastry was wonderfully flaky and delicious. Paired with a couple of beers, this was an amazing experience and one I won't soon forget. Highly recommend giving this place a try!

The dinner booths were quaint with the cool leather backed benches, albeit a bit tight in the legroom area. We tried some traditional Scottish food here on our last night in Edinburgh. We also had venison croquets and a Beef Shin pie with the bone sticking out of the crust! The service was pretty good although it took a bit to get our check at the end. Jan ordered the fish and chips. I thought it was the best we've had in Ireland and Scotland. I ordered the chicken sandwich on a Chibatta bun and it was below average. The chicken was cut into small strips, like you might find in a salad. I had a couple of bites that were all bread and it was difficult to keep the small strips on the sandwich. The bacon on the sandwich did little to help the overall flavor of the sandwich. Service is based on placing your order at the bar and waiting for it to be delivered. When the server delivered our order we were too busy looking at the food to notice that we had no ketchup or malt vinegar. Jan had to go and hunt that down in the restrauant.
