Unexpected five star reviews are the best kind of five star reviews. I visited the Westerton in my pre-Yelpy days. Back then, I would most probably have agreed with the modest 3.5 rating with which the Westerton is currently graced. - My visit was over three years ago, and nothing called me back till now. I have a feeling it won't be just as long before my third visit.
B of A is perfect for dinner in a cosy, roaring fire kind of pub. And the Westerton is just that; a traditional homely pub serving up delicious and comforting grub. The Westerton was first stop on our haven't-made-a-booking, look-at-menus-as-we-pass meander. It was also our last; the menu sounded too good to resist, and so we ventured in.
I'd forgotten just how big the place is. - It is one big pub! We were welcomed warmly, with just a few minutes wait for a table. It took me an unbearably long time for me to decide between the good old classic pub offerings. Should it be the steak pie, the haddock fillet, the mac and cheese....? Oh, chef, can I just have a little bit of everything, pretty pretty please? - It all just sounded so darn good! Also, if you're not up for the traditional British pub affair then there's also the option of chicken tikka masala, Mediterranean risotto and the oven-baked Mexican cheese nachos with pulled pork starter, to name a few. Also, the sides are definitely worth getting excited over, with mini mac and cheese and, hold the phone, did someone say sweet potato fries?! YES, YES, YES.
It's all well and good drooling over a menu, but did the food have a similar effect? My belly just rumbled affirmatively, as if to say it was a good, good meal. My friend and I shared the breaded mushrooms and haggis bites to start. - Both delicious and nicely seasoned. I particularly liked the haggis. For the main event, I had the highland chicken; chicken breast stuffed with (more!) scotch haggis, coated in oatmeal crumb with a homemade pepper sauce. Served with creamy mash and vegetables, it was every bit as good as it sounds. The mash and pepper sauce together made for a dreamy, creamy wonder of a combination and the flavours from the crumbed chicken were severely mmm-inducing!
Delicious, and generous portions too.
So, in short: Yes, Westerton...I'll be seeing you again soon! read more
