I love food. As such I will happily overlook mediocre service if the payoff is a memorable dinner. However, my forbearance has limits and they were tested on my recent trip to the Cottage. Upon arrival I was immediately charmed by the patio seating area, which was well-appointed with space heaters. An initial serving of bread was tasty and fueled anticipation. But then, our waiter (yes you, the one that looks like a more-sullen Carel Struycken) proceeded to bring my appetizer and drinks but completely ignore those of my two companions. His behavior towards them was so curt that it led them to opine that misogyny may be at play. Whatever the reason, I observed him dispensing his brooding, checked-out demeanor at other tables too. Our waiter then disappeared for about 40 minutes. I asked other waiters to check on the status of our missing items because and they gamely agreed, but did not return or furnish the drinks. When our dinner finally arrived, the quality was inconsistent * fries: good * burger: prepared well-done, my companion had wanted medium rare. However I cannot fault the kitchen because our waiter did not ask her how she wanted her burger prepared * meatballs: decent * pasta: soggy; sauce was overly sour and uninteresting Our waiter did swoop back at one point, but again was curt. Don't know if they were having a bad or a busy day but heard good things about this place so came to check it out... Also don't know if sitting at the bartop was a mistake but too many things went wrong... Ordered Americano with Breve and Splenda.. they didn't have Splenda or didn't hear me properly, so ended up with Stevia... no worries... Asked for an Avocado Toast with Egg and Bacon, had to repeat the order when was asked twice in a few minutes what I wanted... The Avocado toast came and was served with no cutlery, the Bartender realized that and went and got some.. One bite into the toast and realized that it was completely unseasoned and tasteless... it literally felt like someone had toasted a slice of macrina bread (which is supposed to be good) and just threw it on without any salt, pepper or ANY seasoning of any kid and threw some bacon bits on top... there was no sign of egg anywhere... they forgot I guess... Ordered some fries which never came... The place was humming with activity but NO ONE came to ask if I needed anything or if everything was ok. There were at least five to seven hosts/hostesses around but they were too busy looking 'cool' and socializing... a bunch of them were youngsters (nothing wrong with that) but the concept of 'hospitality' is totally lost on them... I heard of it from a friend at work and have brought friends numerous times- every time they have knocked it out of the park! The food is FANTASTIC! Check their website as they have live music as well! They have Beecher's cheese fries with green onions and bacon so we had to have that! We ordered that for an appetizer. It was super delicious. My only complain is that the fries were thin regular type which was surprising as the restaurant aims at being more gourmet. If you've never tried Beecher's cheese then you must order this. This cheese is full-on adult gourmet flavor. I was hankering for some spaghetti but ordered the impossible rigatoni dish as I need to watch my cholesterol. It tasted okay but I wouldn't order it again. I should've got the spaghetti and meatballs but I love Italian sausage and this dish doesn't have it. There are some good items on the menu but it's limited for dinner entrees. My daughter had the salmon which she loved. It came with grits! What? Grits? Yes, but they were the best grits I've ever tasted. This was very good. My wife had the bacon-stuffed chicken with blood orange hollandaise sauce. She said it was super delicious. And she loved the pistachios in the rice. The sauce is what made this dish so the chicken had no special flavor. We had two desserts: the cheese cake and lava cake. The lava cake was really gooey- a little too gooey for me and came with vanilla bean ice cream. It took too long to get our desserts. I even asked about it as I thought they had forgot. They put a sparkler candle on one of them. It was a little noisy by the time we left as it's a small restaurant. All the staff were very polite. They have a large wine selection so if you're in to wines well come on over. They have a fireplace with some cozy chairs you can sit and sip! read more

Alright, let's balance out the mildly racist review written right before mine. We came here for brunch and it was absolutely delicious! The decor is great - not too "cottage-y" as it had modern notes, as well. Service was good. We were told our wait would be about 45 minutes, but it turned out to be more like 20 minutes and they text when your table is ready, which I loved, as it gave us a chance to walk around the area a bit. They weren't kidding about their spicy Bloody Mary being spicy. My spice-loving husband needed a sidecar for all that spice! I ordered the shrimp and grits: Parmesan truffle grits and spicy shrimp etouffee in a slightly spicy cream sauce. I walked in and was offered a table outside on sidewalk which lately has become part of restaurant. However, they have done a great job of covering it up and adding heaters on top and even under your table by your legs. It is unique and I liked that idea. I got their mushroom quiche (but got the ham one instead)...but no worries i still had it and loved it. I booked a reservation at the Cottage 2 days in advance and was able to get a seating for brunch indoors. For winters, I would recommend finding a place indoors as the outdoor arrangement wasn't cozy enough. We were seated in a matter of minutes and we started the meal with a cup of coffee and matcha latte (large). Both were great and we tried the whole milk version that muted the flavors a bit so maybe try it with half and half or non fat. Moving on to food, we were in full Sunday brunch mode so I ordered the famous French toast and the husband went for the eggs Benedict. Both the dishes were really good with me having to doggy pack the French toast since the whole milk matcha had filled me up already. When I was finally waved down by the hostess behind the counter, she was rude and demanded my elder mother sit outside ensuring that it was it was only cold, if we thought it was cold. Another employee greeted us with blankets and turned on the heater, which was lovely. Regardless, the warmth of the blankets and heater didn't remove the cold disposition of the immediate greeting. Let me start by saying, this place looks like an absolute gem and has dining beautiful space inside and outside. We were wandering around the area, so didn't have a reservation for a table and when we arrived ~1:30pm there were no tables available to dine inside or outside (due to a baby shower happening in the outdoor area). Instead, we opted to order food to go and eat nearby half a block away. Unfortunately, the food took much longer to prepare than the 20-25 minutes originally quoted and then parts of it were cold (not luke warm). The grilled cheese was now cold toast with a tiny bit of cheese barely visible. The burger had no toppings and the fries were also cold. There was attention to making sure it looked good - everything was in a separate container with a sticker and put in a nice bag with tissue paper. I would love to give this place another chance because it is very cute, however based on our experience the food wasn't very flavorful (or more importantly warm). read more

HOWEVER, I walked inside to use the restroom after my server kindly welcomed me too, and was met with overhearing some of the most blatant racism and hate towards minorities that I have ever heard. I overheard the servers or waitresses talking very passionately about the Indian american community, LatinX community, and the black community. I do NOT wish to share these words which I heard over a public review, but the most I can say is as a minority, these was extremely disheartening to hear. Not only this, but after doing some digging and even asking family friends who know employees here, I seem to realize this is a trend for the cottage. Multiple reviews online first of all state that this is an ongoing issue, guests have frequently not felt accepted or welcomed because of their ethnicity here, but ALSO, the company's own employees' families, (whom I do not wish to name) have secondhandedly told me that the reason their grandson doesn't work here anymore is plainly due to the fact that the establishment, its employees, and management are blatantly racist, and enjoy using slurs even in the presence of customers. I don't want a free giftcard to eat here again even though I know that is the usual route of "solving things". I don't want to talk to the manager OR owner, I want this to remain up on the page, visible for all eyes who are curious whether or not choosing to take your family here is a good choice. I really wanted to like this spot but it missed on a few different items First of all it was WAY too loud. My ears hurt, I got a headache. It took three times of our waitress telling us she was bringing our waters (clearly her phrase to buy her time) before a host noticed we still didn't have them and brought them. Once ordered it took 40 minutes to get our food. I actually ended up asking for an ETA on the food and she said she would check...but then went to three more tables before checking. Once she did check what do you know food was there. We got the braised short ribs that were far too sweet and the duck which you couldn't taste anything but the sauce drizzled over it.
