We had a great lunch here. One of my friends and I each got a sandwich and decided to split it. Although my wrap with turkey stuffing and cranberry was better than her chicken sandwich, they were both very good. Their fries were really really good. The iced tea was fresh brewed and had good flavor. My other girlfriend got a salad and was thrilled with how good the flavor was. The water wasn't bad but I still opted for iced tea. The weather was so nice we were able to eat outside. They do have an outside and inside areas. And the bakery goods looked so good but we were too full to try anything. They are dog friendly and we were in the area, so we stopped in hopes of a decent lunch. We got seated in the very confined front porch (right side is what they call it, left front porch if you're facing the building). Our dogs enjoyed their Peanut butter yogurt with apples. My wife ordered the macho salad and I ordered the shrimp & grits. Immediately after placing our order, my plate shows up. Wow, that was fast. Meanwhile we wait while they then deliver my salad. Seems a bit out of order but ok. Then we wait. And get a Caesar salad. And advise - not ours. While waiting we hear the server next to us announce the specials - which our server did NOT inform us of as we arrived. My wife would have ordered different. Finally her salad arrives and we eat. My shrimp and grits were sparse on shrimp and were made with mushrooms and reminded me of ingredients found in an omelet. Not a typical flavor. I finished most but not all of it. Just a bit weird. And that 1/2 a biscuits? A lump of flavorless starch. Our server was nice but seems she wasn't as seasoned as other servers nearby. She should inform everyone of the specials. Ask your server if there are specials. Our cocktails were the best part of our meal. And the prices? That bowl of shrimp and grits, along with my simple side salad were a whopping $23. My wife's salad was comparably priced. The dogs split their bowl, which was $10 just a bit much but they did bring us a bowl of water. My sisters and I went shopping around the area and to check out the market so we stopped by here to grab some lunch. We were happy that it wasn't super busy considering it was lunch time but we were taken towards the back of the restaurant with our group of 5. They had a good menu selection and I was torn on what to pick. I ended up getting the french dip sandwich but after trying my sister's hamburger, I wish I had gotten that one instead. The Great Gal and I enjoyed a wonderfully tasty lunch with Brother/Sister-in Laws at The Cottage in Bluffton, SC. We split a Shrimp Cobb Salad that was yum, yum, yum. Likewise, the In-Laws split a Shrimp Beet Salad. Everyone enjoyed. We followed our salads by each splitting a salted caramel and chocolate chunk cookie. The Cottage is an old Post Civil War home converted to a restaurant that is also a SC Historical Society building. Charming and quaint are just not descriptive enough to describe this place. We were seated outside as there were no indoor tables available, it was very hot and had a fan blaring on our table but we still enjoyed the food and the company. Only piece of feedback is we were a table of 4 and 3 of the 4 meals came out at the same time, we had to wait about 5 minutes for the 4th, this was not ideal. We ordered the French toast with fruit on top, it was very good. Also had the Rancheros which was cooked perfectly. Last we had the caveman pancakes which were tasty. Certainly charming with tight seating inside and out. Small menu with nothing under $18 for lunch. I had the gumbo that came with a great side salad. The gumbo was eh.....andouille was a little tough, 5 shrimp of good size and 5 pieces of okra bits. It lacked the rich creamy consistency and bite of a true gumbo. Service was pretty good. The space is small and cramped which was a little claustrophobic for me. We arrived at 9 when they opened and the temp was freezing in there. I had to wear a coat the entire time. I mean, if you know you open at 9, crank up the heat for your customers at least 30 minutes ahead of time. Always a must stop when visiting Bluffton. Fabulous menu, you can't go wrong. My daughter and I came through town and had lunch on the porch. They have heaters which are so nice on a sunny but still tiny bit chilly day. There is inside seating in this historic home as well but we wanted outside, fresh air and to people watch in this busy area of Bluffton. We got coffee, a French Dip and the famous fish tacos. I went back to the cottage for their mango crab cake salad. I will say, it was very good. There was a lovely balance of the salad, edamame, crab cakes, avocado, tomato, and mango. Very refreshing. And the corn bread was an added touch. A great size portion to match the price. I also enjoyed the coffee which was very appealing on such a colder December day. She said fried green tomatoes (which they offer in a variety of selections) are one of their specialties and her favorite is the turkey cranberry BLT. My wife opted for that and raved about it. She liked it so much she never offered me a bite! I went with the Monte Cristo which was a delightful panini with turkey, ham, Swiss, grape sauce and powdered sugar. Fabulous. Served with chips and a salad. Why 4 stars? Everything on the lunch menu is $19 and UP. The breakfast menu is very enticing with innovative choices but all starting around $17 and up. I want to love this place but honestly the food is ok and overpriced . It's a cute cottage and fun to sit on the porch and dine, I dined there on four occasions because of the hype...and tried different menu items. The abc omelet was difficult to eat. It was loaded with cream fraiche and the two artichokes were whole and not chopped inside. My daughter loved the huevos rancheros though. on other occasions we both ordered the monte Cristo- mine with turkey and hers with roast beef. the presentation was impressive. But the meat was fresh from the fridge cold on a panini style sandwich. we spent $54 before the tip for two entrees and two coffees. one more comment. the servers are wonderful. read more

They took the meal back, credited the cost and I ordered the Roast Beef French Aux Jus which was pleasant but not I am not a fan of Aux Jus. I had the American scramble with added avocado for breakfast. Katelyn was my server and so pleasant. She was welcoming and had a great personality. She was attentive but not overbearing. She gave me advice on what's worth seeing and what not to waste time on as I'm a Californian. She offered to refill my coffee but make it Togo which was awesome as it is some of the best drip coffee I've had. As I was leaving I happened past their bakery case and legit hear the cinnamon coffee cake say my name, so of course I rescue a slice and took it with me. Overall, I highly recommend The Cottage as the food was delicious and don't skip the hot sauce. Super yummy on the scramble. I love love love this quite little restaurant! I've been twice and each time the food is delicious, the wait time is not bad and the staff are friendly, casual and on-it! Their fried green tomatoes are a must try. Their hummingbird cake is also tasty! I love to just walk inside and see all their yummy treats! They have paninis, salads and lots of options for apps. I highly recommend you take a stop here. The location can be small but they were still able to accommodate our group of 7! I also love that they have a "dog" menu for your pet. Adorable.
