Ella Fresh Fruit Bar

I noticed the kiosk set up of Ella Fresh Fruit Bar (EFFB) when I popped in to check out Taco Grande…read morea couple of weeks ago. Both Taco Grande and EFFB are all within the same space as Big Bazaar Indian and Mexican Grocery. I noticed the big banner hung outsIde of the building in Spanish, but it had fruit cocktail looking items and naturally, I was curious. Upon entering, I inquired inside and the Indian lady informed me it was opening this week, so here we are. This is a Mexican Style Fruit Bar. They have all sorts of fruit (and certain veggie) concoctions. Some have diced fruits, some are parfaits with layers of fruit flavored yogurt and some are just over the top (literally), like the one we chose! They had one with a combination of fruits and cucumber and other with jicama (pronounced he-kah-ma, a.k.a Mexican turnip). If you don't know, it's a root and I feel like it's almost a cross between an Korean/Asian Pear and a Daikon Radish. It has a similar texture to both, with the same crunch, but without the spicy-ness of the radish nor the sweetness of the pear. At first, you may think that the fruit concoctions themselves may not be Mexican, but the choice of combinations (like cucumber or jicama) with the way it's prepared and the choice of toppings they provide at the end, will make you think otherwise. They have chili powder, hot sauce, sprinkles (yes, sprinkles!) and this pink sugar-looking topping that is sweet, but sour! These were only some of the choices. What we ate - I picked the most over-the-top one for my kids and I....oooooooobviously! Fruit Cup - Spears of Honey Dew melon, pineapple, papaya, mangos and it had a Strawberry Rose! So pretty! All the fruits were ripe and sweet and the guy then squeezed half a fresh orange all over it (and was about to add lime too, but I declined as I was sharing with my kids). I chose not to put any toppings, because again, my kids. Sigh... Mango Rose - This was a special request from Yours Truly. I had seen the Strawberry Rose on the fruit cup and I asked him if he did the same with mangos, because I thought my kids would get a kick out of it. It's cheap entertainment! I told him that I was from Montreal and that I would see these Mango Roses sprinkled with chili powder during the Summer at festivals and they sold like hotcakes! He happily obliged and made us one. He picked a nice, ripe mango, peeled it, stuck a bamboo chopstick in the stem part and then cut it like a rose, just like at the festivals in Montreal! Oh, the memories! They all came back! Vibe - They have built the kiosk on the right of the space as you walk in. They are still waiting on their logos and menus, so please be patient. The whole space in general has a lot going on. Mexican grocery and EFFB on the right, butcher in the back, Indian Grocery in the middle, Taco Grande to the left and Arcade in the front, but hey, if you are looking for all those things, it's a one stop shop! They also let us eat our fruit treats at the tables on the Taco Grande side, so that was nice. Service - He was so nice. He gave my kids a piece of jicama to try and added the mango in the fruit cup which was not in the original cup. He went out of his way to get a mango, peel it and cut a few spears off and added it to the cup, because I told him they liked mangos. On top of that, he happily executed my request for the Mango Rose because he knew what I was talking about and knew how to do it. Now is that great customer service?! Yes or yes?! Kid-Friendly - Yes! Both kids devoured it! Five dollars for an overflowing fresh fruit cup and two dollars for a Mango Rose was money well spent IMO, especially for a healthy after school treat and the memories it brought back of home.
