My husband and I were staying in Concord for one night and had heard rave reviews of The Common Man and called to make a reservation. They unfortunately do not accept reservations, but you can do call ahead seating, which is what we did. The hostess my husband spoke to on the phone for the call ahead seating said our table would be ready in 30-35 minutes, which was perfect for us to check in to our hotel, freshen up and then head over. It was about 6:30 by the time we got there.
When we got there, we let the hostess know that we were there, and she said that we had 10-15 minutes longer of a wait for our table. No big deal, we just sat down and waited. However, couples who arrived AFTER us got seated BEFORE we did. Our 30-35 minute wait for this call ahead seating ended up being just over AN HOUR wait. But it gets worse.....
When they finally sat us, it was at a thrown together makeshift wobbly table, with mismatched chairs, that was far too small for two people right near the entrance and sort of in the middle of everything. We were starving by the time we sat down, and when we asked the person who sat us if we could have some bread, she said "oh your waitress will be right over," and walked away without a second thought!!! When the waitress finally did come over, (which was probably about 1/2 an hour or so after we sat down), we put in an order of lobster roll sliders and asked for some bread. About 20 minutes later she came back with these lobster roll sliders and said that they were working on getting us seated at a roomier table. Some woman who I can only assume was a manager on duty came over to check on us to see how our meal was and said the same thing about getting us seated at a roomier table.
The lobster roll sliders were lousy. There was little to no mayo and absolutely NO seasoning in the lobster, and left us feeling a little less than impressed. We just finished these horrible lobster roll sliders and our waitress came back and took our dinner order. I ordered the crab cake dinner and my husband ordered the swordfish.
As we were waiting, people who sat down after us were getting their entres!! Forty-five minutes to an hour after placing our dinner order, our meals finally came out- and I was really hoping they'd be better than the lack-luster lobster roll sliders. My crab cakes (or should I say CRAP cakes) were mushy, had the consistency of baby food and the sauce on them was far too spicy. My husband's swordfish had no seasoning and was over cooked. The vegetables that came with the meals were no better.
Our waitress did not come over ONCE to see how we were doing. Not. Once. She did not come clear our plates when we had finished the horrendous meal, another member of the waitstaff did. She did not refill our water glasses or drinks - another member of the waitstaff did. She came over at the end of the meal to hand us the bill and give us a few pieces of white chocolate, which wasn't all that great either. We never got seated at a roomier table as promised by both our waitress and the woman who I assume to be a manager of some sorts. This woman who was a manager came over again near the end of our meals and asked how things were...we said fine, but she could probably tell that we were not pleased.
They didn't comp us anything - at least comp us a drink or the lousy appetizer! - as a way to apologize for telling us 30-35 minutes for our table and making us wait for about an hour for a crappy table, sitting us at a cramped, thrown together table in the middle of everything, or the almost hour wait to get our meals. It was funny because when the waitress presented us with the bill, she was so attentive at that point and asking us if we wanted more water or if she could get us anything else. Obviously, she was expecting us to tip her well for her lousy service and for the lousy food.
I'm not sure if this is the case with all the Common Man locations, but it has definitely put a bad taste in my mouth, literally and figuratively!! I will not be going to the Common Man in Concord again, and probably won't go to any of the other Common Man locations at all. The food was awful, the waitress was terrible, and we were never seated at a roomier table as promised by our waitress and this manager woman.
We have a large circle of friends and have spread the word that the Common Man in Concord (or any other location) is not somewhere they should go for a good meal. They'd be better suited to go to the Friendly's down the road. read more
