Greek chicken and rice
Erika T.

Their power had just come back on after being out for a while earlier in the day. We would have had no indication they had anything out of the ordinary but for overhearing another table talking about it. It wasn't immediately clear if we needed to wait to be seated, but the woman cooking the food greeted us with a smile and said to sit anywhere. We grabbed a table in the middle of the restaurant and were promptly greeted by our server. We ordered and told the server we were going to share a couple dishes and she put our order in. First out was the soup which had the best lemon flavor ever. One of my favorite dishes in any Greek establishment, hands down. The chicken gyro (not pictured because we eagerly devoured it) came on two plates because we were sharing. We loved the flavor of the chicken and the robust portion. Everything was served hot and we loved it. We'll definitely be back next time we're in Concord. It's easy to see why this restaurant has had such staying power here. The only thing we didn't love was the 3% surcharge for paying by card. We weren't told there was going to be an upcharge for using a card and would've paid cash otherwise. The atmosphere was atypical of a Greek restaurant, but it was clean and the service was great. Can't recommend this place enough.

Man, this place is really old school. I wanted to grab something quick and good to eat before I headed out of Concord to beat the snowstorm. I made a stop at The Gas Lighter, which serves up Greek American comfort food. Step inside and it's one open room with bar counter seating with open grill/food prep area and table seating, for up to 60 people. The classic atmosphere inside reminds me of a bar back in the early 1980s with the exception of the large flatscreen mounted on the back wall. The walls are decorated with beer signs, Boston sports, and framed pictures of Greece. There are 3 beers on tap (Bud, Coors Light, Sam Adams), several bottled beers, and Pepsi fountain drinks. The menu offers sandwiches, Syrian pockets, grinders, burgers, hot dogs, omelettes, salads, soups, fries, onion rings, comfort dishes (teriyaki, souvlaki, gyros, liver & onions, chicken fingers) and desserts (baklava & rice pudding). I decided on the Gyros ($7.95) served with French fries. I watched my food being made, the flatbread and meat grilled to order and frozen fries cooked in the deep fryer. The good sized Gyros was very good and filling, stuffed with meat, tomatoes, raw onions, and homemade tzatziki sauce with cucumbers & yogurt, which was creamy and very garlicky, I could smell it! The cook mentioned, "I hope you don't have a hot date tonight because our sauce is homemade and has lots of garlic." I reply, "Hehe, no date tonight, I just wanna enjoy this and get the heck out of Dodge before the snow hits the roads." Don't get me wrong, I love garlic, but too much can throw off my schedule with not so stellar breath. Altoids anyone? The gyros became messy to eat with lots of that garlicky tzatziki sauce, very tasty nonetheless. The fries were standard fare, just okay. I was all good to go for my drive back home along I-93 South. The snow started to really come down as I drove through Manch, but made it home okay with really strong garlicky breath. Listerine time! Overall, 3.5 STARS.

Will recommend Will return…read more when you walk in this place, this is order at counter to go or order at the counter and be seated and they will bring you your order. This is not a place where a waitress comes to your table to take your order. We are local to the area and I created a list of places that I would like to eat at and this was one of them. I had Mediterranean food once before and that was in North Carolina and this restaurant was way better. The food was hot. The food was fresh. The chicken, lamb beef and I know I'm forgetting one more but the four types of meat I had were very moist and very good. Very flavorful! proportions were great for a hungry lady after 8 1/2 hours of yardwork. I chose to do the spicy hummus and WARNING take WARNING that is very spicy. The pita bread was not stale. The staff was very friendly. I did say to them that I was willing to try anything they recommended. I was up for an adventure, and there was not much that I don't like and that's what she chose for me. The seating area was plenty. It was a little bit busy, which I was surprised to see. I just figured it wasn't going to be that busy, but it was. It seemed very family oriented. It was not loud at all. It also seemed to be clean. The chair is on the other hand they could use an upgrade. They were comfortable, but you can definitely tell by the armrest that they are used. I thought the price was also very reasonable considering

The portion size is variable. I've had it "generous" and I've had it "Whoa - that's a LOT of food". They're not covered with a standard tzatziki sauce - theirs is more feta forward. Super tasty. The fries vary as well. Sometimes a bit crunchier and sometimes, while still crunchy, more toward McD fries style. But it's just the outer surface that crunches. Inside it's smooth and creamy. Top drawer. You'll find that they tuck a few fries into the wrap. A nice touch. The only negative point is speed. I've always been there early - the first for lunch. But it still takes a fair bit of time to get the food. Arrive during the crowded time and you're definitely going to be waiting around. But ... worth it. They have a lot more on the menu and have an interesting alcohol free beer/soda that was new to me and a nice change from actual soda. Definitely worth a visit.

This was our first visit on a Saturday evening and we were glad we made reservations as it was packed yet still maintained a great atmosphere. Our male server Burak was very attentive, professional, and very friendly. We ordered the Lavash with the mixed appetizer - tabouli, Mediterranean salsa, hummus, and Haydari. Chicken and Beef Kabobs as our entrees. Their signature cocktail Istanbul Peach Martini and a glass of Autorotas Sauvignon Blanc. As always the Lavash was amazing as was the Kabobs. The Kabobs came with a scoop of white rice, potatoes and a great salad with no lettuce, just marinated tomatoes. Cucumber, onion with herbs.

The time between the meal and dessert was a bit delayed as our server seemed to forget about us. The first time I went there I ordered the falafel wrap -delish!

About a year later, I found myself craving authentic Mediterranean food again, so I started searching for restaurants around New Hampshire. That's when I came across Ayasofia. As I looked through the menu and photos, everything seemed so familiar--it reminded me of the dishes I had loved at Mediterrano. The next day, my husband and I decided to drive an hour to Salem to try it out, and it was completely worth it. After speaking with the owner, we learned that Mediterrano had actually been owned by a member of his family and that they use the same recipes. It all made perfect sense! The owner was incredibly warm and welcoming, even encouraging us to return and meet his mother, who taught him these recipes. I highly recommend the hummus, baba ghanoush, salsa, and grape leaves--they're all fantastic. Be sure to order the lavash bread on the side, as it pairs perfectly with everything. For a main course, the adana lamb kebab is a must-try. Everything tastes incredibly fresh and full of flavor. I only wish I could cook like this--I'd happily eat Mediterranean food every single day!

I also got the Raki, because I was having Turkish food, but all the cocktails sounded very good. We did not sit in the bar, but they sounded like they were having the time of their lives in there. At one point Rod Stewart came on over the speakers and you could hear them shouting "ROD!!!" I was like, shit - Turkish food AND the regulars love Rod Stewart? Sign me up! If we lived anywhere near here, we'd be back.

Most restaurants were closed already but fortunately The Gyro Spot was open until 1:30am on Saturday's. It was empty with just us and 1 other customer about 9/10pm. There seemed to be plenty of seating with dimmed lights. We got our orders pretty quickly what felt like a wait time of about 10 minutes or so. We ordered feta fries, tzatziki fries, and 4 different gyros. I got the falafel gyro and it was delicious even after bringing it back to the hotel about 15 minutes away! The gyros were all wrapped in foil. The pita bread was soft and fluffy, and the falafel and gyro itself was flavorful. I also really enjoyed their fries dipped in the tzatziki sauce. I ordered the Zeus gyro along with a side of fries. The fries came out piping hot, fresh, and perfectly seasoned. They were crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and honestly some of the better fries I've had in a while. A great start to the meal. The gyro itself had great flavor--the ingredients were fresh, the toppings were vibrant, and the seasoning was spot on. Unfortunately, it was lukewarm when it reached the table. The taste was good enough that I kept going, but I couldn't help but think how much better it would have been served hot. A gyro with that much potential deserves to come out at full temperature, and I was disappointed that it didn't quite get there. That said, the overall experience was still positive. The friendliness of the staff and the quality of the ingredients make me believe this was probably an off moment in the kitchen. I'd definitely give them another shot because the foundation is clearly solid--and when that gyro comes out hot, I'm sure it'll be fantastic. Worth a visit, and worth trying again.

I went crazy and ordered the Steak Shawerma, 3 piece Falafel, baba ghanouj and hummus. The steak shawerma came with rice pilaf and a garden salad and was so good that I'll be going back to try their chicken one. The falafel was perfect. It wasn't oily and had just the right amount of flavoring and crunch. The baba ghanouj and hummus were to die for. I seriously had to keep myself from eating the entirety of the containers. They are currently remodeling the dining area so I can't comment on the ambience, but for what it's worth I like the quaint look of the place from the outside and the ease of ordering from the window.
