Friday Night: we were driving up to the lake and decided to stop to get something to eat in Concord. My son looked on his phone and came across Barley House. We were able to park close by and get in before the big crowd. Barley seems like a happening place. An upscale Irish Pub, for sure! The set up is a bar with a decent amount of restaurant booth seating. Of course, there were tables of different sizes available, as well. We were given a 10 minute wait after meeting with the Hostess. There was alot of activity around the bar and lots of drinks coming out of the bar well....always a good sign! When our time was up, we were quickly escorted to our table. We were each given a menu and a drink menu. Lots to choose from on both menus (see the pic below) I ordered the chicken sandwich with caramelized onions and my son ordered a Chicken Pot Pie. He had a beer and we both had water with a lemon. The food came rather quickly. I was immediately taken back when the caramelized onion was not on my sandwich. I was going to ask the waittress to fix it but it was far to busy and it was not a big deal. Of course, I would have enjoyed the onion but "no big deal". My son's Chicken Pot Pie was a good size and was thrilled with it. We both ate everything on our plates. Our waitress checked in with us a few times to refill, which was nice and came to take the plates away after we were finished. We did not get any dessert. To be honest, we did not see a lot of dessert plates coming to other tables, either. Nice enough place for families with young kids or 20-somethings looking to get drunk, but forget about the food! Everything our party of four ordered was a disappointment, starting with an ice-tea cocktail that was undrinkable-- our nice waitress took it off the bill. My grilled salmon on a bed of rice arrived as dry as the Sahara, surrounded by burnt roasted carrots -- at least I think that's what they were. My husband's steak he ordered medium rare was also way overdone, served a block of with cold mashed potatoes. The overly sweet Apple Pumpkin Bisque (for $9) went uneaten after each of us tried a spoonful -- it was more like a bowl of pie filling than soup. Even the dessert, bread pudding with some whipped cream, was gloppy and unappetizing. This is a great place to go if you are fasting. read more

Overall this an acceptable, but overpriced American tavern. I came here for lunch and the service was strong and friendly. Atmosphere is enticing and welcoming. It's like an upscale Irish pub. I realize later, that this is probably the favorite lunch dinner spot for the state governmental officials. Hence the high prices... The central problem is the high cost of the food and beer. The beer tap prices are quite pricey for New Hampshire. The burger prices were outrageous considering the quality and cook on the burgers. Frankly, their signature tavern Burger should have been $17. Again, I will keep lobbying against the $14 pretzel appetizer. For that price, sweet baby Jesus better come down and dip it into the cheese and serve it to me. read more

Prior to catching a show at the Cobb Theater, we decided to grab some dinner. We found this place and were glad we did. The staff was super attentive and helped keep a brisk pace knowing we had a show to catch. The food was great. I had the McBarley burger and it cooked too my exact liking. One of us had the chicken pot pie and that seemed to be inhaled! The same goes for the veggie quesadilla the House Burger. If I'm ever up in the Concord area again, I'd certainly dine here. read more

Food was great! Got the fried brussel sprouts which were unique compared to what I've gotten at other locations - walnuts as a bonus ingredient with a type of sour cream dipping sauce. The fish n chips were fantastic. Two thick pieces of flaky haddock with a light crispy batter. Service was excellent as well. Highly recommend. Stopped in for a Guinness. Bartender fills the glass just over half way and I'm thinking, fabulous, this is a legit Irish style pub and he'll let it settle then top it off. Waited and waited but unfortunately nope. That was it. I received just over half a pint. Whelp, lesson learned. read more

Stopped by after a great tour of the State House. Service was okay. They were friendly enough, but nothing memorable. They were out of the chicken pot pie (which I was really looking forward to ). We tried a burger and the stew. Both were fine, decent portions, just nothing that stood out. The atmosphere was cozy but a bit dark for lunch. Overall, an okay experience. I got their about 10 minutes early to have lunch with my sister and even though they weren't open yet they let me inside. That was considerate as the nip was still In the air. Service was efficient, but not friendly. The ambiance was lovely for their Christmas pop up. The food was great - the burgers were big juicy. The fries are crispy and soft. I didn't care for the bread pudding because it needed more craisins but I'd definitely try something else from the dessert menu next time. read more

A complete "Meh" of a place. Honestly, it had potential. However, the post cognitive dissonance of paying $25 for their burgers is just jumping the shark. Here is the thing...I am actually reasonably affluent and can afford things; however, I like there to be a good value proposition. I go to an ocean front place in Newport, RI, and their burgers are $25, but they are twice the size and just much better than this Barley House. I get it, high rent area of Concord...it's just this place was honestly sub optimal....and clearly no value from my experience. btw, What can change a diners perspective is a little showmanship...make the guests feel special. Exhibit A: we came into this place and stood around at the designated check in spot...and waited at least 5 minutes with no interaction by any employee. Sat at the bar which was comfortable. We shared a basic burger and the squash salad. The burger (with cheddar) was really tasty and well cooked (medium). The salad was large and very good. Draft beer (I had Maine Lunch and wife had a Bud Light) was cold and good. A solid choice for a casual dinner. read more

This place has fallen off a cliff. Last visit was eight years ago. Saturdays you couldn't get in the door. Last night we were seated from the git. Let's start with the booth. The faux leather/vinyl is worn out and torn. The ceiling is wall to wall fire hazards (apologies to the FOH staff. It must have been a slog hanging all that stuff). The menu is reduced by half. The prices for the products are absurd. Hey, you think $21 is high for a burger? Guess what? The Sysco frozen fries are ala carte. The $17 chicken pot pie is a travesty. Pastry from the freezer, filling thickened with corn starch, frozen peas and INTENTIONALLY shredded chicken. Wtf. Hey, Maine Beer Co., get your product out of there. read more

Man, this is the place to be for lunch on a Thursday. I was visiting my parents for the holidays and was leaving that afternoon, so we stopped in for lunch before I had to head out. It is conveniently located in the heart of downtown Concord, and my parents live just a few blocks away. My sister and brother in law do, as well, so it's been a relatively frequent spot for my family for years, but this was my first time here. I think the entire town was there for lunch - we actually had to wait for a table, but I think it was only about 10 mins. While we were waiting near the entrance, I was perusing all the photos on the wall - lots of political candidates, some athletes and other celebrities, and then I spot a photo with my brother in law in it. He interviews politicians for a local radio show sometimes. Anyway, it was funny because no one in my family had ever noticed the photo before and it looks like it's been up there for over a decade. Once we were seated I ordered a spiked hot apple cider, which was tasty but room temp. If they weren't so busy I would've asked to have it reheated, but it was good enough as is that it didn't feel worth troubling anyone. My dad got a non-spiked hot apple cider that was in fact piping hot and he was very pleased with it. It was pouring rain that day, so it was a perfect day for a hot bevvy. We started off with the Blarney Puffs appetizer - it's fried little pockets of potato, cheese, and scallions served with Guinness cheese sauce. It made me wish I was in town more than once a year because I would eat those things every single day. Then I had to try the lobster BLT. Can't travel all the way to New England and leave without any lobster, come on. It's market price, which was $36 that day, but that's about what I was expecting. It was so filling that I could only finish half of it, so you're getting your money's worth. My parents got to enjoy the other half later. I also liked the coleslaw I got as my side. I don't know that I need to do the lobster BLT again, as that was more of like a novelty thing for me, but I'd get on a plane right now for more Blarney Puffs. I think my parents are hooked on them now, too. And they can get them whenever they want, so they'd better take advantage or I will have some sort of existential crisis. read more

We tried the Barley House this past Saturday evening at 6:00 PM. There was a 40 minute wait and we put our name on the list for 3. We got beers at the bar and waited for our table. Time was correct, We got buzzed at 40 minutes and got a booth. Service was pleasant but the food took nearly 40 minutes to come out was underwelming. Started with a cup of cabbage soup. It was warm and lacked cabbage. I had the beef stew which was only warm and lacked beef. I only got 3 small pieces. It was mostly potato, carrot, and onions. Hubs got the fish sandwich which was just ok. He though it may have been previously frozen and then fried. THe beers on tap were the best part of the meal. The downstairs unisex bathroom needed a good scrubbing, esp the walls. read more

We stopped here and ate on our way from Boston to Mt Washington. The food was delicious (Brussels sprouts were excellent as was the Dublin burger and the Roasted Squash Salad). Service was also excellent. Avery was super friendly and attentive. We loved this place so much that we stopped back in on the way back to Boston!
