The Comet is a pretty cool place. I went there on a random Tuesday and the food was really good. I got a lemonade which was home made, man oh man was that good. Then the food came and it was basic tacos/nachos, type food. They make their own salsa which is pretty cool. The nachos I got were a huge portion and I could not eat all of them. The friends I went with had quesadillas and queso. They all liked the different food that they got. This place seems very artsy. From the friends who live in town, I learned that this location is often a venue for musicians. They also have art on the walls. The building itself is dark has a hole-in-the-wall feel. If I'm ever in Cincinnati again, I would eat here if I was in a pinch, but it's no non-negotiable. read more

Walk in and first impression was intimidating. We got there right after the opened so it was slow, and is just your regular dive. What is great about it are their specials and their north side pride. They have two dollar beers all the time and three dollar 16 oz bell's as well. Susie made sure we knew how their restaurant worked and directed us to the kitchen window after ordering just $1.50 tacos!! We also tried their salsa sampler and that is great if you are with a group. A ton of chips!!! Susie told us a little about the comet and informed us that they are the place to be for brunch. She always told us a little about the owner who opened the bar at just 20 years old! He lives right up the street and often pops in the see how this are running and also to get to know his customers. Great beer selection. Wait, let me correct myself --- GREAT beer selection!!!! I ordered the jerked tofu burrito and it was to die for. The flavors were great and it was so well-constructed, unlike the fast-food versions at Qdoba or Chipotle. I ate until I couldn't any more (which was about 2/3 of the burrito) and had a pint of beer following it. Talk about satisfying! A few games of pool following it concluded the night perfectly. Hands down one of the best burritos in Cincinnati. The ingredients are fresh and delicious. If you like it spicy, they have one of the spiciest salsas, rich with flavor. I highly suggest ordering a side of guac to accompany the perfectly salted chips that come with your burrito. I prefer to come in the afternoons when the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. My friends and I had the queso which was really good and had a nice kick to it. I ordered a chicken burrito with the hot salsa. The salsa is definitely hot and I really enjoy all that is spicy. My friend had the happy hour tacos for $2 each! You can't beat that price. She ordered beef and protein of the month (mushroom chorizo). The protein of the month was "eh". My other friend got a chicken burrito like me, but hers was a little soggy, which I assume is because she got salsa in her burrito while I asked for mine on the side. Sunday night is bluegrass night! Caught the house band playing bluegrass just last night. The band typically plays two sets which include some country classics and some not-so country classics. I happened to catch a Bob Marley tune as well as some John Denver. If you need to get your banjo and fiddle levels up, Sunday night at the Comet is the place to be. This place can fill up in a hurry so get there well ahead of the performance time. Last night was set for 7:30. My date and I arrived a half hour early only to find that every booth, stool, and seat were occupied. We were lucky enough that the folks that frequent The Comet are some of the best on the planet. A couple had a big booth in the quieter bar area and offered up the unused half, so we made some new friends. The bar area is a great place to play some pool and have some casual banter while the band is playing. The Comet is a great place for making friends, largely because of the seating situation. Later in the night we decided to move into the significantly louder performance space (don't expect to carry on a lot of conversations here). A couple of elderly gentlemen let us take the spare two seats at their table, so again we made new friends. One gentlemen spouted off request after request for the band and they kindly obliged even though many of the suggestions were not in the bluegrass genre. We watched as the house band performed every one of them with their own unique style. Excellent entertainment, particularly for a Sunday night! The Comet has a great selection of craft bottles and the cost was very reasonable. This place does have a bit of a dive-y quality, particularly if you are using the restrooms. Be warned, the bar area restrooms do not have proper locks and are consequently a great place to get caught with your pants down. read more

I have been here more than a few times as my old house in Northside was right down the street and within perfect walking distance. One of my favorite drinks is made here called the Irish Ass, amazing trust me. The Comet also has one of the best selections of bottled beers and beers period with great prices. We came here for #Sundaybrunchday to check it out as we are always looking for new & local places to try...especially if they serve alcohol for a boozy brunch. Be prepared when you come here not to sit and wait for someone to come to your table. The process is that you come in and go to the bar. The menu is above the bar which is also where you order your food with your drinks. They will give you a ticket to take to the kitchen window where they will trade it for number for your table so that they can find you when your food is ready. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy with side of over easy eggs - he said they were OK, but that the eggs were well done. He would have sent them back, but he was pretty hungry. Biscuits were fluffy and also came with a side of potatoes. I ordered the hot mess which was potatoes (lots of them), eggs, bacon, sausage, and cheese. It was pretty good, but lots of potatoes that kept me from tasting all the other goodies that were included. This place is always a good time. We have been coming here for over 15years and it has always delivered! We miss Bones as the cook, he was amazing. The cooks now are keeping up the legacy and putting out great food and unique salsa and combinations. The beer fridge used to be one of the few places to get craft beers in the city. It still has a good selection but now has local craft beers as well. This place is good for everyone. Brunch at The Comet is outstanding. When I've been there, each plate of freshly-prepared food is $9 or less. Yes, the wait is substantial (we waited over an hour for our food), but my God, is it ever worth it. Open a tab at the bar, grab some Mimosas, and enjoy the eclectic playlist spun by the resident DJ while you wait. And meet your friends here...good company makes the food even better. Seating is FCFS, so don't be surprised if you have to split a party (alleviate this by getting here early). For this review, I had the Buttermilk Biscuits & Black Pepper Gravy and the Vanilla Peach Bread Pudding. Both came with home fries, and were incredibly, incredibly delicious. The biscuits are thick and moist, and the fresh gravy (no separation) is infused with maple syrup. The bread pudding is moist, as well, but not mushy, and the peach drizzle is very sweet, perfectly complementing it. Parking is a bit tricky, so get there well before it opens at 11 am on Sundays. read more

This review is for brunch only. Went there last Sunday for brunch. The reviews are right, you have to get there within 10 minutes of opening or the wait is forever! Luckily we got there just as it started filling up and didn't have to wait in line at all. I had the eggs Benedict and a screwdriver. Note: make sure to stir your drink because I didn't and it tasted like OJ for the first half and then BOY was it strong. The benny was amazing! It came with a massive side of potatoes that made the meal highlight tiny in comparison. My bf order the crepe cake and holy smokes, I can see why this is a standard on their brunch menu. If they removed I can imagine them having a riot on their hands. My mom had the hot mess which honestly was probably the most disappointing item we ordered. She had it without the siracha so it was bit dry until we managed to snag a side of salsa, even still it was not unique and easily replicated at home- a factor that reduces the draw of going out for brunch.. at least for me. We came to the Comet on Sunday for brunch! We tried several things. The biscuit and gravy with potatoes. We really liked the biscuit and gravy and I'm from West Virginia so gravy's got to be good LOL there just wasn't enough gravy to eat both biscuits. Bummer! The potatoes were good with a Tex-Mex kind of flavor. We got the hot mess. No complaints there! We also got the Monte Cristo that was ham and cheese stuffed French toast with a strawberry dipping sauce. It was OK. The mimosas were excellent! Probably the best I've ever had. "Order at the BAR. They will GIVE you a TICKET. Bring the TICKET back to me!" Listen dude, I'm a newspaper editor with two college degrees. You're scooping refried beans in the back of a dive bar. Don't insult my intelligence. So I played nice and ordered at the bar, took the ticket back and waited. My order was supposed to have chips and salsa included. I saw no salsa. Thinking it was an oversight, I saw the cook walking buy and politely asked if I might have some salsa. "It's IN the BURRITO." If you're giving me chips, why would you put the salsa in the burrito? "May I have some salsa for my chips?" "Order it at the bar!" So I had to leave my lunch with my girlfriend, go over to the bar, have the bartender write down "med. salsa" on the ticket, then walk that back to the cook. Then I walked back to me table and sat. The salsa arrived a few minutes later. Again, I should stress there were 10 patrons in the bar, tops. So Comet gets two stars for carrying Wittekerke on tap. Other than that, avoid this den of rudeness. Also, a $1 charge for using a credit card isn't terribly classy. read more

So, if the Comet were some snooty hipster bar, I would not belong. Thankfully, it is not a snooty hipster bar. The Comet is a hipster dive bar with wonderful late night tex mex eats & a kickass beer selection. My days to go to the Comet are Mondays and Tuesdays when they're playing live music and Paul the bartender is working, simply because Paul is cool AF. Their beer selection is on point; if you want a Bud or a Miller, I wouldn't recommend coming here. But if you enjoy local crafts and seasonals from around the nation, this is the place for you. My complaint about most bars is that they don't offer food - period. Do you know what drunk me wants more than anything? FOOD. And White Castle mozzarella sticks can only hold a drunk girl over for so long. The Comet understands that, and serves quesadillas, nachos, tacos, and they have a salsa of the month. December's roasted garlic salsa = on point. Their brunch is amazing too, and the coffee and mimosas are free flowing. My only gripe is that they don't offer goetta anywhere on the brunch menu. I do enjoy the goetta. This place is dark, btw. If you can't handle barely being able to see or if you're just plain afraid of it, this is probably not the place for you. I would love to give this bar a 5 star, great food, eclectic crowd, great vibe, but whoever bartends on Tuesday night, tall skinny guy with dark hair was the single worst bartender I've experienced in my life, cussed at me multiple times and threw my card at me when I told him my tab was wrong. Then cussed some more and congratulated me on getting free stuff. Even after I asked to see my tab which he conveniently threw away, literally threw my credit card at me from behind the bar. 13 dollars for 2 burritos and 9.50 for drinks equals 22.50, still ran it at 23.50 and said the extra dollar was for his time. My group of 5 people went from talking about how awesome this north side bar was to being amazed at how awful this guy treated us all. The Comet is exactly what every neighborhood bar should be. It has the biggest beer selection of any bar I know without being pretentious about it. It has the best jerk tofu quesadillas I've ever had (or even heard of) and great burritos as well. The food sometimes takes a while, but that's because they make everything to order. Don't worry, it's worth it, and you can drink any beer you want while you wait for it. The Comet has a pool table and a photo machine and a killer jukebox. It has super nice bartenders, a little bit of outdoor seating, rock and roll during the week and the best bluegrass band in town (The Comet Bluegrass All Stars) every Sunday evening. Now they even have Sunday brunch. I've gone to the Comet for celebrations. I've gone there on dates. Heck, I even studied for the bar exam there (true story. I passed it too.). They have free wifi. They have good food. They have good beer. They have good music. They have my favorite wooden Cincinnati sign inside by the pool table. Basically it's like if heaven were a dive bar. The beer selection at the Comet and the quesadillas alone are worth a hefty five stars, but what makes it an annual destination (aside from the WKRP scooter rally) is their friendly, welcoming style. They have a great space for groups, lots of street parking which they generously block off for our scooters, a freakin amazing photobooth, a basement to get away from the more crowded upstairs and a back yard with a fire pit to get some air. The music is great from what I hear, though I've never sampled the juke personally. The staff puts up with our huge, boisterous group with aplomb for which we are very grateful. The Comet is like a lot of establishments in Northside: smallish, dingy, with a serious identity crisis, caught somewhere between hipster and hippie. Parking is of the scarce street variety, and the decorating is... eclectic. In most other establishments of this ilk, I find all of these qualities more or less charming, but The Comet was a little too much of all of them for me. Case in point: a friend and I order burritos. Half an hour later I return to the little window at the back to check on said burritos. The girl working there is looking bored and pissed. The skin around her large metal cheek studs looks a little inflamed. She riffles through the order tickets and tells me, more than a little annoyed, that there are "like, fifty" people ahead of me, and it'll be another thirty minutes. I don't mean to call this poor girl out, or imply that she personally affected the rating for this place. She did not. She's just one aspect of the larger experience. But I know there are people out there who would find this encounter a little unsettling, so to those people I say this: you probably wouldn't like The Comet. It was a long wait in a loud, dirty room. For my part, I didn't mind it too much. If she really had that many burritos to make, I probably would have been a little pissed at anyone who came up trying to bug me, too. Besides, when the food finally did come it was fairly good, and pretty cheap considering how much of it there was. They've got a good selection of beers, though it didn't seem quite as legendary as some people believe. It's just that the servers, both food and bar, and even the other patrons just gave off this unwelcoming vibe. But I worked next door at Avant Garage for years and it was a bad week when I didn't get a chicken quesadilla with sour cream. The bartenders are always super nice and super hot, as well as David Cunningham, the owner. Hey I'm just saying what we're all thinking. If you've never ordered here, you have to go up to the bar, at the end that is closest to the door and ask for a menu. The bartender will take your order, if you want water, get it now. They'll give you a number and you take it to your table. You are also in charge of delivering your ticket to the kitchen. Do not expect the bartenders to leave the bar to take your ticket for you, OR refill your water for that matter. The cooks will bring your food out to you and if you feel like tipping, there is a jar at their window. Just watch out if you don't like garlic, because the salsa here is laced with at least a pound per ounce. Figure out THAT math. read more

I have never eaten inside, only take out, so this is mainly a review on the food. I have had two things. The burrito and quesadilla. The burrito was okay. Nothing crazy. I do like you can pick and choose everything that is in it. It comes vegetarian (vegan?) but you can get protein for a little more. The price is reasonable considering the size (think Chipotle) but it was a miss for me taste wise. The quesadilla on the other hand was spot on. You can order the same stuff as the burrito inside and for some reason it was just better. No real idea why considering the basically had the same fillings.... I am so good at reviewing things. Haha Both come with salsa on the side with chips so that is good. Hate to break this to everyone, but The Comet is not a dive bar. Dive bars, while fun, are skanky, dirty and grimy, filled with intimidating lowlifes and the stench of failed dreams; their bathrooms are unmentionable in their unseemliness and often don't have doors. The Comet, on the other hand, is a really cool hang out for a really mixed crowd. What, so they have checkboard flooring, a pool table and loads of beer taps lining the walls. This makes it a dive bar? The fact that the sink is located outside of the individual bathrooms makes it a dive bar? Really? I found this place to be clean and pretty upstanding, for a bar. My friend and I had a blast here on a recent Friday night. There was live music in the lounge, which has retro early 60s-ish wallpaper and a photobooth, several tattooed and pierced 20-somethings milling around, and dozens of great beers by the bottle. (For some reason the Comet is heavy on the Green Flash brews out of California. Good call.) I dug this place. I'd come back for sure. read more

Burritos!!!!! Yes, a bit obvious since this delicious bar at the top of the hill is known notoriously for it's massive, tasty quick to order burritos. The line may be long to get your order in but, your first bite will prove it was worth it. The tofu, the chicken, the beef, it is all good! And if you are not in the mood for a massive, tortilla rolled bundle of Mexican goodness, the Comet also provides great quesadillas and chips with queso or salsa. Everything is good - especially the beer selection. While waiting to order your food, don't be afraid to gaze, I mean literally GAZE at the beer selection waiting for you in the massive grocery store-esque fridges. Everything from Ciders to IPA's to Lagers to Pilsners, of all types and selections. At the Comet - you aren't just limited to the tap (although that is pretty choice in and of itself...). The tenders will be quick to the draw though, if you aren't ready - in soup Nazi form, you will get a 'Next!!!' or simply walk away to the next customer. This could be deemed as rude, but it is part of the experience at the Comet. They are about quick service and getting customers served quickly is one of their specialties. I would give them 3 stars overall. The atmosphere is dive bar + interesting mix. Mostly a young crowd. A lot of times I come for the food or to chill out & am uninterested in the loud live music they have going on. Sometimes they have amazing acts there, but other times I really wish the two rooms were separated by some kind of soundproofing. If I was rating for the food alone it would be a fast 5 stars. A gem of a bar located in Northside that serves some of the best Mexican food in Cincy. The bar is part hipster/part dive. Parking can be hairy-it is on a main road and finding on street parking might take a few laps. Once you do acquire parking, scoot quickly passed the outside smoke ring to the inner sanctum of the bar. As you head up to the bar, take note of the Protein and Salsa of the month. This is where the mildly annoying hipster attitude happens: you have to order both food and drink at the bar (which involves flagging down the bartender aggressively if you are not a regular or forgot to wear your hipster digs) then you take your food ticket to a window in the back wall of the opposite side of the building (where they often have live music!) They will give you a number and you just go find a seat and wait for the server to bring it out. The musical acts are different every night, and occasionally deafening. Add this review to the ever growing list of accolades. Though I'd been to the Comet for several shows, I'd never managed to try one of their famous burritos. So this Wednesday, my friend and I trekked up to Northside with our appetites primed for some much acclaimed grub. For all of the hype, the burrito was even better than I expected. At first we were confused ("Tortilla chips without salsa?"), but soon realized that these chips were there to scoop up any sloppy spillover from our ginormous burritos. Some how I ended up with a medium salsa on mine instead of mild like I ordered, but the added heat didn't prevent me for devouring my entree. Wednesday night is karaoke night. Unlike every other karaoke event I've ever been to, these singers actually left me impressed, with one chick wailing an Etta James song so phenomenally she gave me goosebumps.
