Surprisingly one of the best Mexican restaurants in the area, in my opinion. I didn't have high expectations coming in and wasn't sure it would meet my standards, but this spot definitely impressed me. I got the quesabirria tacos and they were so good. They were packed with meat and cheese and had a lot of flavor. The consome was delicious too and perfect for dipping. I also got a peach mango margarita mocktail since I couldn't drink that day. I would rate this place 6/5 if I could! It's a hole in the wall type restaurant that was bumping at 8 PM on Friday night with a line almost out the door. There's limited seating inside with a bigger covered patio area so it may be more of a to go order situation if you have a larger group. After living in Texas for several years, my standards for tacos are pretty high but the Olla Birria tacos put up a fight. If you order one thing off the menu, let it be the Birria tacos. They are pretty big so you can easily get away with 2 for a meal and so crispy and flavorful. This place was incredible! From the homemade chips to the churro- queso, to the Birria tacos - everything was absolutely outstanding! Absolutely delicious food! They also have some creative drinks, I requested a frozen peach margarita with fresh jalapeños, blended in it and a tajin rim - she made it exactly how I asked for it and it was superb! Came here just to try out their birria tacos and ending up getting three of their birria items! We also got the birria grilled cheese and ramen. The grilled cheese was delicious, with crispy toasted bread and the cheesy juicy meat in between. I'd definitely recommend trying this dish out! We also got a few margaritas pitchers and my favorite flavor was by far the strawberry mango! The service was pretty quick and we got our food within five to ten minutes after finding a seat. On this first day in July I tried them for the first time. I LOVED the food! I ordered a burrito (no protein) with both salsas. All the components tasted fresh and good quality. Nothing was left out or made wrong. Tortilla was soft, cheese and refried beans were good, onions fresh, salsas tasted homemade. I saw a few Mexican cooks back there making the food, bravo, they did a great job! At $10 it was a great deal for a filling meal. I would definitely get another burrito, much better than the chain places! Today they had a great taco special. Three tacos for $7.00. Choices are steak, chicken or chariso. You can get all three or mix and match. I decided on two steak, one chicken and added a lengua taco and a side of refried beans. Tacos were really good. I probably went overboard getting a fourth plus the beans. The three specials would have been plenty. They came nicely arranged on a 1/4 sheet pan topped with chantry, chopped onion and had limes and sliced radish on the side. I'm San Diego born and raised, very very big into mexican food. Their california burrito is NOTHING like the authentic ones you find throughout socal. 1) You don't add beans or rice to it EVER 2) it should come with guac 3) you shouldn't have to pay for a protein 4) it shouldn't be 17$ total. CA burritos in SD cost about 12$ MAX, that includes guac and sour cream. Keep in mind, that's pricing in the most expensive city in the country. Never seen one this expensive, minus at the tourist traps with big names 5) it should be a handheld. This fell apart instantly the second you took it out of the wrapper 6) Salsas were actually slightly authentic. Green was way better than red. 7) Sour cream should come inside, not in a squeeze packet that you have to put on yourself 8) Taco shops shouldn't have branded salsas at the tables, they should have variations of their own. Good taco shops have 5-6 different ie; Red, Green, Habanero, Avocado, Roja/Ranchero ect ect 9) The meat was literal rubber. At the good ones, you can quite literally see each piece cooked medium rare as they are thick, tender and juicy. This was well done rubber. 10) The fries need to be crispy. The fries should not soak up all of the salsa, beans (which shouldn't be in a CA burrito in the first place) and become mush. They need to represent their own flavor profile, as they are the single handed biggest ingredient that differs a California Burrito from a regular carne asada burrito. Why was it shaped like a rectangle??? Again, HUGE california burrito lover and critic, have had probably more than 75 taco shop variations around the US, this was by far the worst one. I had the breakfast burrito and it was gigantic; I couldn't even finish it. My cousin and aunt both had the eggs a la mexicana and both said the food tasted amazing. Lots of flavor and portions are good size. They also have vegetarian and vegan options! Olla offers Jarritos and paletas and fresh frozen lemonades, which is perfect for the summer heat! I'm not exaggerating when I say I had one of the best quesadillas here. The ratio of cheese to other filling plus tortilla crispiness was perfection. The chicken wasn't shredded, but the pieces were small and not too cube-like. The nachos were great too, one of the rare times we had plenty of topping per chip; I feel like we usually are left with a handful of plain chips when ordering nachos elsewhere, but this time we actually had a good amount of topping/cheese left over after every chip was eaten. Olla needs no introduction, but had to throw in this review because the food was absolutely amazing. We visited on a weekend and this quint corner restaurant was packed with a line out the door. Limited indoor seating but plenty of outside seating available. The ambience is lively and energetic. The kitchen is constantly churning out food. Bar is running at full speed with drinks flying out the door. The line moves efficiently and you're given a number placeholder. Despite the incredibly busy day, they got our food to us hot and fresh within about 10-15 min. We opted for the carne asada, lengua, and birria tacos. Generous portions of meat and fresh toppings. The homemade corn tortilla is incredible and wraps all the goodness up. They have such a robust menu, we plan to be back to try everything -- including their drinks.
