    Flautas mexicanas

Mi Cocina in Newport just might have the best Mexican food in Cincinnati! For the sake of credibility, my gf and I both grew up in SoCal and we are both Mexican ourselves, so of course, we grew up eating homemade Mexican food. We moved here last year and have tried many Mexican places around Greater Cincinnati, which some have been decent, but we think Mi Cocina is above and beyond the best in the area. All the food is delicious and tastes very fresh and homemade. And their portion sizes are VERY generous and affordable. Definitely not your typical Americanized Mexican restaurant. We had the Flautas Mexicanas, a sope de carne asada and a Torta Cubana, as well as aguas de piña and Jamaica to drink. All amazing! Would definitely recommend! This place is hard to miss, located on Carothers Rd next to the shopping center with the Ross and Burlington.

Hell, we're still sussing out the Colombian vs. Venezuelan arepa rivalry. But the arepa pabellon at Arrechissimo (this apparently means "awesome" in Venezuelan Spanish) wins the prize for us so far, and it's not even close. Even if it initially seems expensive at $13.50, it is a near-miraculous little food item, regardless of one's knowledge about arepas generally. It's perfect in its simplicity and greater than the sum of its parts: Wonderful white-corn flatbread style rolls with a great balance of fluffy and crisp, flavorful shredded beef, fried plantains, black beans, and melted mild cheese. Add the spicy cilantro salsa, which is just about perfect in its own right. By the way, despite its compact size, the arepa pabellon is plenty filling. Arrechissimo is just a food stand with maybe four outdoor tables. The setting in quiet Deer Park is pleasant and comfortable enough, when the weather is reasonably nice. Unfortunately for us, Arrechissimo is far enough away that carryout is not a suitable option during those too-many months when Cincinnati weather is not so nice. Owner Javier is about as welcoming and friendly a host as there is in the metro.

We didn't realize that when we decided to go. However, they do have 3 or 4 outdoor tables. Right beside the tables are very sturdy extendable umbrellas that they can open to shade you whenever you want. Their food is handmade, fresh and delicious. Got a vegetarian bowl with rice, beans, plantains, lettuce, and avocado slices accompanied by 2 small arepas. The arepas and empanadas seemed to be made from the same dough and it's a good thing because it is extremely mouth-watering - yum! Kudos to the owner. He is the nicest man - friendly, and really cares about his customers.

The parking lot is a little small (pro tip: go around the round about to get to the actual entrance to the lot, the other entrance is blocked off), but it is totally worth the effort. I tried the horchata...huge glass and has incredible floral notes that I've boy had in other versions. 100% recommend! I also tried the cheese and the pork/cheese pupusas. Light, soft and completely delicious, the accompanying cabbage and carrot slaw was acidic and bright. Definitely delicious and the prices are super cheap. The salsas are very authentic, the green one being my favorite. I can't wait to bring people back here. The decor is simple and very clean, and there is a takeout area as well as some seating. The service was very fast and friendly. I'll definitely be back!

Thanks to the reviews here, I decided that this would be the place to give a shot. The place is not glamorous. I didn't see a sign with the name of the place outside, and the inside is minimal. Just some tables and chairs. The menu is a QR code and it's also on a chalkboard. Regardless of all of that, the food is truly a journey into a phenom homemade meal. I had the pepian and my friend had the pollo dorado. The wait wasn't bad at all, as we got there about 45 min before they closed, and we dug in immediately. The meat of my dish just fell off the bone in the most beautiful way imaginable and the fried chicken had the most flavorful and light crunch in just a bite. The tortillas are house made and really add to the experience of it all. I also got a Jamaica agua fresca, and it is one of the best I've had in the area. Just sweet enough without the overwhelming flavor of the hibiscus. Simply put, if you want a perfectly cooked homemade meal with excellent flavors, you have to visit this place!!

The interior in nothing fancy with a few tables donned with plastic table clothes and one tv that had a soccer game on while we were there. Everything on the menu looked delicious. And it all had meat in it but my husband improvised and asked to leave the meat out of a burrito. I went for a dish that is only served on the weekends. The fried fish. My meal was perfect. Crispy skin and flaky and tender meat. If you're picky about what your food looks like, this isn't going to be your jam. My fish was bone in, skin on and head still attached kinda fried fish. It was filling and delicious. My husband finished his vegetarian burrito and stared at my food while I ate. I offered a bite and he broke his diet to try some. And he obviously enjoyed it as he helped himself to more. I have a confession to make, I hate sharing my food but this is too good not to share. The service was a little slow but friendly. Cash only. ATMs are down the road, there isn't one at the restaurant.
